We've gleamed the cube. Have you gleamed the cube? We watch a pre-superstar Christian Slater (aka Christian Skater) flick called...Gleaming the Cube. It's a skating movie? It's a private detective movie? It's a multi-national anti-communisim, anti-Vietnam, but the bad guys are the anti-communists, but they're really bad, movie. Bad it was made in the 80s so we loved it!Next movie: 12 Mighty Orphans12 Mighty Orphans isn't streaming for free anywhere so you might find it at your local library.
Scene In Fifteen is about to go back to the clean family friendly movie review show that it has always been, just now in the hands if that Jabbo guy.Same great show, same great content, with a few twists and turns. Welcome back to The Scene, where we kick it all off with Christian Slater's skateboard espionage flick, Gleaming The Cube. Oh yeah, nothing says KEEP IT or SLEEP IT like 80s rebel skateboarding movies...especially when you bring on Rukus Juice's host ol Philly Rosewood, to help with the review. What is there NOT to love?Welcome to the new Scene In Fifteen!
GBBV turns to the extreme side of things thanks to the Pateron Patrons with Gleaming the Cube, a 1989 skateboarding action/revenge flick. Will Max, James, and Ryan, figure out what Gleaming the Cube actually means, or will the anti-communist arms smuggling continue to line the pockets of the privileged? It's the 80s so who can say for sure.Skate away your feelings at 1:40:21 for the post movie wrap up on all things skateboarding, NA canned beverages, the plot structure of 1980s films.Like what we're doing? Greetings and salutations, we're taking a look at the career of counterculture icon Christian Slater! GLEAMING THE CUBE (1989, Graeme Clifford) KUFFS (1992, Bruce A. Evans) HARD RAIN (1998, Mikael Salomon)
This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris celebrate the 35th anniversary of the 80s cult classic skateboarding movie, Gleaming the Cube.Christian Slater stars as Brian Kelly, a punk skateboarder whose only ambition is to read Thrasher magazine and pull off the sickest skateboard tricks with his crew of friends (which includes the one and only Tony Hawk). His adopted brother Vinh (Art Chudabala) is the complete opposite, a responsible and fastidious student. However, Vinh uncovers some discrepancies in shipments for the relief organization he works for and gets murdered to hide the true nature of the shipments. Brian picks up the investigation and tries to unravel the international smuggling operation with "his skateboard as his weapon". Steven Bauer co-stars as a street-smart cop who is also investigating Vinh's murder and develops a begrudging big brother-style relationship with Brian.Zach and Chris talk about Brian and his crew chartering planes to find abandoned pools, Brian going "undercover" as a preppy to try and get close to his dead brother's girlfriend, the importance of Pizza Hut, murders within sight of Disneyland, and much more. You can watch Gleaming the Cube on Prime Video if you want to refresh yourself on this cult classic or watch it for the first time.Next week we are diving into the awesome Marvel animated movie Hulk Vs. to celebrate its 15th anniversary. We want to hear your comments and feedback. Episode 125 of the Hey You Guys Podcast is here, and this week, Liam and Rob look back at 1989's, brilliantly titled, Gleaming the Cube. What does it mean to gleam a cube? Well, honestly, we are none the wiser, but then, we're not much wiser as to the motivations of either of the movies' 'bad guys' or whether this is even a skateboarding movie for that matter. Sure, Christian Slater goes about town on a skateboard (and yes, Tony Hawk in in this movie), but for the most part, skateboarding feels rather incidental to all the amateur sleuthing going on. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about the 1989 neo noir GLEAMING THE CUBE, starring Christian Slater as a high school skateboarder investigating his adopted brother's murder.

Christian Slater is a skateboarding detective who will stop at nothing to solve the murder of his adopted brother, including using his dead bro's ex, complicity in manslaughter and traffic violations. Traffic violations!!! So Brian (Christian Slater) is a teenage punk whose only outlet in life is some serious thrashing on his skateboard. When his brother gets fired from his video store job for looking into his boss's medical supply business invoices, he ends up accidentally murdered by a guy choking him with a towel. When THAT guy ends up accidentally murdered, Brian goes on a investigation with the power of his skateboarding. This sounds like its awesome and well....it is. BUTTTTT it takes so long to get going that you're gonna be pretty disappointed for the first 30 minutes. However, once that ball gets rolling - hold on to your trux because things get really awesome at the end. We're still not really sure what the crime plot is, Steven Bauer stinks pretty hard, and the stunts are fantastic. Gleaming the Cube is a definite do but just be warned the beginning is much like a made for TV after school special.
Here's a sneak peak at what you can expect in our next episode... Gleaming the Cube.

Are you ready to break out the latest issue of Thrasher magazine, kick off your airwalks, and down a Tab? Psyched to blast some Suicidal Tendencies on your tape deck while tightening the trucks on your deck and dreaming about landing that sweet 360 inward heel flip at the local abandoned swimming pool? Does absolutely none of this make sense to you? Well, it obviously didn't to anyone involved in the making of Gleaming the Cube either, a righteously confusing movie about solving crime and uncovering strife in the Vietnamese community, while also featuring a little bit of skateboarding. Join Jay and Benny as we backside heelflip face-first into this mind-numbing adventure, ant try our best to carve through the mess to find the story underneath while wondering what happened to our lives. Is it a carefree story about a bunch of skateboarding rapscallions negotiating their way through high school while fighting conformity? Is it a tale of a plucky young man defying the odds to solve a crime and bring closure to his family's grief? Is it a gripping story about weird love across cultural boundaries and against all odds? Sure, what the hell. Join us as we ollie onto a rail and pray for the sweet release of death while pondering such things as: Benny's opening joke being the greatest thing ever, despite Jay's criticism If a movie could define “well, that escalated quickly”, it's this disaster. Things repeatedly go from “this might be trouble” to “aaaaand he's dead” in record time Movie songs that feature the name of the movie don't work in the best of examples; this is not one of those best examples The ongoing theme of “what's the plan, here?”, with people breaking into places with little to no actual plan in place Is there anything sexier than a cherry red convertible K-car? Why is no one talking about how disturbing and wrong the love story becomes? Slater's adopted brother was JUST put in the ground when he decides “you know what? I'm in love with his ex-girlfriend/widow”, who is equally into it. The thought of it makes Benny more and more unhinged as the episode progresses Apparently, the best thing to do when you're upset is to have a 5 minute-long Footloose-style dance montage on a skateboard, because reasons Note to the movie producers: Your stunt doubles should at least remotely look similar to the actors or actresses they are representing The detective/big brother in this movie is a walking fountain of words and phrases we can't repeat in our episode, let alone a summary. It's a fine wine you'll have to uncork and enjoy for yourself
