Welcome back, Brigadeers! Today, we're in the studio to dig deep into Mike Vallely's Y2K documentary, Sponsored- and joining us once again is Mike's former Black Label and Street Plant teammate, good friend, and touring partner Kristian Svitak! At just over 30 minutes, Sponsored is an embryonic foray into the world of skate documentaries that covers Mike's life in skating up to that point- a mere blip on the radar of the career we know today- and shows us some of the earliest glimpses of footage from his early skateboarding years, including some incredible public access cable and TV commercial appearances and (to that point) never seen b-roll from his days filming for Public Domain, and much more. What are you waiting for? Sprint through the graveyard and join us- shall you? --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/larry-ransom/support
The BBAS crew, along with our good friend Jim Fitzpatrick, are back in the studio this week to delve headfirst into the short, sweet and mostly unknown Powell Peralta video, Camp Motherhood! Developed primarily as a tradeshow video- promotional material to support Powell's 1989 sales and marketing initiatives- Camp Motherhood is an interesting time capsule, inadvertently bridging the gap between where Public Domain left off and Ban This started, and marking an infamous era for the ‘Brigade that saw the introduction of the notorious Field Manual, the exit of Mike Vallely, and numerous other changes beginning to manifest under the surface. As always, Fitz breaks it all down with more detail and behind-the-scenes knowledge than you could ever reasonably expect. You have your marching orders, private- so join us, shall you? It's time to delve, once again, into that strange and enchanted era known as the late nineties with a play-by-play review of the often-overlooked Powell Skateboards '97 summer tour documentary, Strip Mall Heroes- and joining us for the occasion is none other than ripping skateboarder and thrift_store_paintings Instagram content creator, Rich Wilson! Much like Chaos and 8 before it, Strip Mall Heroes is a tale of a video in two forms: the officially-released version, and the lesser-known “rough cut” that was hastily shelved following the surprise departures of Mike Vallely, Stacy Lowery and Charlie Wilkins from the team prior to its release (never seen or heard of this version? Fret not, for it is now available for viewing over on The Bones Brigade Audio Show YouTube channel!) We get into it all- the tricks, the one-liners, the return of the Ripper intro, Ramp Master Pete, Cock Diesel and more- and cap it off with an epic mailbag. This is one you shan't want to miss, so slam a glob of wasabi and join us-shall you? Watch a skate video today, and you'll notice how similarly shaped the boards are. It's called the “popsicle” design, because the deck is narrow in the middle and rounded off at both ends, like a popsicle stick. This may seem stupid simple, but that basic, clean popsicle shape is actually the product of a lot of experimentation and iteration. In 1989, one particular board would cement skateboard design as we know it. But to understand it, we have to go back over a decade to the mid-70s, as more and more money poured into the growing sport. The Double Kick

Welcome back, curb-whackers, to another exciting episode of The Bones Brigade Audio Show! Back in 1996, after a multi-year hiatus, the powers that be determined that enough time had passed since their self-imposed moratorium began, and it was time to start bringing pro models back into the lineup at Powell Skateboards. As the skate world breathed a collective sigh of relief at this news, those same powers that be decided that the best way to reintroduce everyone to this welcomed return to form was to produce four individual videos on VHS that would be packaged free with each different board that went out. Joining us to review these very promotional videos- for Steve Caballero, Mike Vallely, Mike Santarossa, and Jason Ellis, respectively- is none other than the legendary pro skateboarder, podcaster, chef, and skate historian of the highest order, Clyde Singleton! Clyde joined us in the BBAS studio to go over each of these relatively rare video parts- all very different in their own right, from Cab's mini-documentary to Santarossa's mini-movie- with the usual fine-toothed comb. What secrets will be unearthed? What tales will be told? What tricks will be discussed? There's only one way to find out, so go dig your VCR out of that bin in the attic, plug it in and join us- shall you? Oh, so you wanna go skating? Welcome back to the show! This week, Matt and Larry are hitting the graveyard running to dig into the recently (re) unearthed raw footage from Mike Vallely's fabled “Public Domain” part. This 45 minute onslaught of rarely-seen material is a treat for even the most casual Bones Brigade fan, featuring what is perhaps the first pro model unboxing ever committed to film, alternate takes, innumerable mind-blowing trick lines, tries, goofs, makes and bails. There's plenty to get through, so strap on your mismatched Airwalk Prototypes and join us, shall you? Welcome back to the show! Bear with us, friends, because it's an oddball episode this week as Larry and Matt are joined once again by pro skateboarder and all-around nice guy Mike Santarossa to fast-forward to the 9:30 mark and discuss his timeless and hilarious shared part with Mike Vallely in the 1995 Standard Truck Co. “Intermezzo” video! It's all the insider info you could ever possibly want or need on how this strange, goofy and fun six-minute skate section filmed in one day around a decommissioned portion of the Powell facility came to pass. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and do so immediately. In addition, SkaterCon founder and head honcho Adam Richards stopped by the BBAS studio for an in-depth dropping of knowledge on all things SkaterCon 2023, which is coming up on September 30th- and is an event The Bones Brigade Audio Show will be attending! On this episode of #DOD45 Tai chats with someone he has admired since his early days of #skateboarding in the late 1980s. Legendary pro skater, formerly of the original H-Street team, #RonAllen. Though he didn't necessarily know it at the time, Ron Allen paved the way for people of color in the world of skateboarding. By doing what he loved, Ron helped skateboarding become the diverse sport we recognize today, which made it's debut in the 2021 summer Olympics. Tai & Ron get right into the thick of it and talk about everything from music, to taking advantage of street skating without the presence of security guards during the pandemic, to continuing to be a pro skater well into his late 50s, as well as discussing some of the racism Ron faced as a skater. Ron talks about how he had to work off his debt to Thrasher Magazine, how being in cheer taught him to be more professional as a pro skater and how he was forced to choose between having dreadlocks or continuing cheer in college. They also speak on the difference between street skating vs. skate park riding and also competing against yourself. Ron Allen recently relaunched his skateboard company American Dream Inc. Skateboards and gets into why it's essential to support and be supported by your local skate shops. Be sure to frequent your local skate shop and while you're there look for or request the American Dream Inc brand to show your love to Ron and the good work he's doing with American Dream. Punk rock, skatebaording y fiestas salvajes.

Welcome to the 14 Things You Didn't Know Skateboarding podcast, where in this episode, we dive into 14 Things You Didn't Know About Powell Peralta skateboards. It all begin with George Powell in his garage, making homemade skateboards for his son in the 70's. George, an aeronautics engineer, had a knack for innovation, and loved tinkering with new ideas for making everyday things better. It wasn't long before he connected with Stacy Peralta, a pro skateboarder who had a special talent for marketing. The match was made in heaven, and the brand began growing in popularity, recruiting a team of underdogs and misfits, who would become the infamous bones brigade; Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike Mcgill, Lance Mountain, Rodney Mullen, and Tommy Guerrero. The team topped the competition podiums for years, and released a number of industry-leading skateboard films which have now become timeless icons of skateboarding culture. However, great success can have a dark side, as Stacy and George began to argue about the future of the company; Stacy wanted to see the team disperse to start new small companies, whereas George saw this as foolish. Eventually parting ways and bringing the company temporarily to a close, Bones Brigade members parted ways to make many of the iconic brands of today: Lance started the firm, Tony started Birdhouse, Tommy started Real, and Rodney started world industries with Mike Vallely and Steve Rocco. Today, Powell Peralta continues to be an industry leader, pioneering new technologies within skateboarding; particularly with the creation of the flight deck, and Bones Swiss Bearings. Professional skateboarder Mike Vallely, and daughter, professional dancer, Lucy Vallely, sit down with each other in the family garage, reflecting on these uncommon times. Together, they discuss the joy of running while listening to music, the Grateful Dead's American Beauty album, and Robert Hunter's lyrics. They reminisce upon a father-daughter road trip they took in 2010 to see Tom Petty perform in Oakland, California, and make a plan, inspired by John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, for a Route 66 road trip sometime in the next few months.

Disclaimer: Some of the language in this episode includes profanity In this episode Shannon and Sharon were joined on the podcast by special guest Mike Vallely. Mike Vallely is a professional skateboarder, owner of Street Plant, musician, actor, tv personality, stuntman, professional wrestler, and FHL hockey player. Mike shares with us his philosophy on skating, how he first encountered Bruce Lee at flea markets, what it was like growing up as a skater in 1980s New Jersey, and how he first started his family-run company Street Plant. Mike Vallely became obsessed with skateboarding when he was 14. He began skating by borrowing friends’ boards, but finally got his own board for Christmas that year. From there he skated obsessively, even sneaking out at night to go skating. By 1986, Mike had an amateur sponsorship deal with Powell-Peralta Skateboards and his picture was in skateboard magazine Thrasher. After winning the amateur division in the 1986 “Street Attack” contest in Oceanside, CA, Mike Vallely was featured in a full-page spread in Transworld Skateboarding’s September issue. Mike Vallely became a professional skater in May 1987 at age 16. Since becoming a professional skateboarder, Mike Vallely rode for many different skate companies and started many of his own companies. He also played in different bands over the years, most recently performing as Black Flag’s lead singer. In 2010, Mike Vallely joined the Federal Hockey League as a professional hockey player. It was in 2015 when Mike started Street Plant with his family. Much of Mike Valley’s philosophy on skateboarding is aligned with Bruce Lee’s philosophy on martial arts. Both felt a need to portray their craft in a positive light and help others understand it better. It is this alignment of philosophies that led to collaboration between Street Plant and the Bruce Lee Family Company. Daniele Bolelli is a writer, martial artist, university professor, and podcaster. He was born in Italy and currently lives in Los Angeles. He's made multiple appearances on The Joe Rogan Experience. Visit www.DanieleBolelli.com for more! After graduating from UCLA with a B.A. in Anthropology, and earning graduate degrees at UCLA (in American Indian Studies) and CSULB (History), Bolelli began teaching at several colleges in Southern California. Unlike most scholars who tend to specialize in one particular field of knowledge, Bolelli adopts a “renaissance” man-approach to teaching that has led him to lecture on a wide range of subjects including American Indian history and philosophy, history of the United States, world religions, history of ancient Rome, history and philosophy of martial arts, the ethnic experience in the United States, world history, plus several courses on the relationship between cinema and history. Perhaps even more peculiar than his unusually extensive repertoire is Bolelli’s lecturing style. Much like his writing, in fact, his lecturing style combines discussions of complex, deep subjects with much humor and “street lingo.” For this reason, he has been defined as “half stand up comedian and half Zen master.” This odd mix has made him extremely popular among students. Martial Arts: Bolelli has trained in several styles of martial arts including kung fu san soo, taijiquan, baguazhang, xingyiquan, submission wrestling, Brazilian jiujitsu, boxing, and judo. He holds a fifth degree black belt in kung fu san soo–a style that he has taught for several years at UCLA’s John Wooden Center. Bolelli also coached and fought professionally in mixed martial arts (MMA). Media and Podcasting: Bolelli was featured in I Am Bruce Lee which broke Spike TV’s rating record for documentaries. He has appeared as a guest on popular podcasts such as Duncan Trussell’s, Adam Carolla’s and Joe Rogan’s. In October 2012, Bolelli began his own podcast named The Drunken Taoist Podcast. A little over a month after its debut, The Drunken Taoist Podcast was ranked number 1 in the world in the Philosophy section of iTunes. In 2015, Bolelli joined his friend, pro-skateboarder and musician, Mike Vallely as co-host of Vallely’s podcast, The Mike V Show. In 2015, Bolelli also released the first episodes of a new historical podcast called “History on Fire.”
