Full episode on Patreon. Christian Hosoi is a style icon within skateboarding whose rise to fame stemmed from the style and power he approached skateboarding with. Skating at an early age with the likes of the late great Jay Adams, Tony Alva and Shogo Kubo; Hosoi turned pro at 14 years old and subsequently lived a lifestyle immersed in attention and glory from the media of the day. Hosoi's career declined in the 1990s due to a long struggle with drug addiction, which culminated in his arrest in 2000 for trafficking 1.5 pounds of crystal methamphetamine and a subsequent prison sentence of nearly five years. During his time in prison, Hosoi turned his life around, finding faith and committing to sobriety. Since his release, he has shared his story of redemption while continuing to skate and influence the industry. http://patreon.com/livingproofnewyorkhttp://livingproofnewyork.com

Hall of Fame Skater Chris Miller is still winning championships in his 50s with his iconically smooth, fluid style and precision against other legends like Tony "Birdman" Hawk. Growing up near the famous Pipeline Skate Park in Upland, California, Chris turned pro while still a high-schooler. He's since gone on to win about every competition on the circuit. Miller found an outlet for his prodigious and prolific artistic talents designing his own decks at an early age. He moved into the clothing side of the business through several iterations with partners and on his own, including the coveted Planet Earth brand. While living in north San Diego County, he partnered up with fellow entrepreneur Joe Kudla to create Vuori in 2014. The company made yoga and comfort wear for men, and was successful early. Nothing prepared them for the pandemic, which Miller describes as a scary time of uncertainty, but it didn't take long before home-bound people found Vuori's versatile and comfortable clothes irresistible. It is now valued at $4 billion. Chris Miller talks over the rise and fall and rise again of skating culture, how important it has become to youth all over, his early heroes Stacy Peralta and Tony Alva, how he came to Ojai and much, much more. He is married to Lauren Dollie Duke, another friend of the pod, whose book "Shithouse" has become a surprise hit. We did not talk about the Copper River sockeye salmon runs, the NFL playoffs or parcheesi. My guest today is Mark Partain, one of the reasons skating is what it is today. Mark embodies everything skating, especially street skating, is and should be. Mark was one of the young grommets that skated with Jay Adams, Tony Alva, and all the OG skaters and was respected for it but never succumbed to the corporate world and skated for independent skate companies that let him skate how he wanted to skate and was always a threat in competition. now he's older and still shredding but more in honor of his brother, tearing up mountain sides and downhills on his bike and showing the world you never stop and never quit! listen in and take notes! We also have some iHeart Radio Random news of the week and our world renowned Random 9 List!!And we couldn't do this as well with out MRS A'S FAMOUS SALSA BUENA, the GOOD WIVES NETWORK & Spreaker Prime & iHeart Radio!!!! coming soon to Tik Tok!This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5624504/advertisement

On May 27th, 2023, history was made as N-MEN: THE UNTOLD STORY pulled the covers on a hidden part of Sacramento, and skateboarding history. Written, produced and directed by James Sweigert, this film puts Sacramento skateboarding on the map and gives long overdue credit to the N-Men, a 1975 response to the Z-Boys from Dogtown. Synopsis: In 1975 a diverse crew of Sacramento skateboarders met at a paved embankment underneath the I-5 freeway in Old Sacramento. They had no idea their underground movement would have a global impact on the world of skateboarding. 11 years in the making, this film gives us a raw, intimate look inside the N-Men, a Sacramento skateboard crew who have grown into an all encompassing family throughout Northern California and beyond. Several of these men and women went on to become world champion skateboarders. The film explores the N-Men's influence on the greatest skateboarders of the past 50 years and their contribution to competitive skateboarding including creating the X-Games for ESPN and having played a part in collaborating with Tony Hawk to get skateboarding into the Olympics for the first time in 2021. Their story has never been told, until now. The film features a treasure chest of never-before-seen footage and photos of the Northern California skate scene which the filmmaker spent a decade mining out of basements, attics and garages. The film features voice over from actor Josh Brolin, also executive producer, and features interviews with professional skateboarders including Tony Hawk, Tony Alva, Christian Hosoi, Stev Caballero and many more Cheryl Bryant Bruce M.D. (thecelebritydoc.net)

As a member of the Zephyr skateboard team in the 1970's -- made famous by the documentary Dogtown and Z Boys -- Peggy Oki was at the top of the women's skateboarding world while pioneering the vertical skating movement alongside the DogTown crew of Jay Adams, Tony Alva and Stacey Peralta, as the lone Z-Girl. Peggy is a surfer, skater, rock climber, and visual artist who has adventured between these creative expressions for more than fifty years. Parallel to living an adventurous life by way of stone and water, Peggy has become a tireless activist for the wellbeing of all beings. Her Origami Whales Project, an installation of 38,000 cascading paper whales, was recently showcased at The Smithsonian Institution. Peggy began the project in 2004 to raise awareness about the potential re-emergence of sanctioned commercial whaling. That number – 38,000 --- represents the approximate number of whales killed since the International Whaling commission's moratorium on whaling in 1986. We caught up with Peggy as she made her way down the Australian coast to chat about adapting surfing for concrete, the inspiration of Sadako Sasaki's paper cranes, the importance of mindset in injury, and the projects currently capturing her imagination. …Listen with Lauren L. We are heartbroken to hear about the death of Art Brewer. We just lost a true icon of surf photograph. Art Brewer's archive of surf photos from the 70's, 80's and 90s contain countless iconic images that helped to visually define the entire sport of surfing. We had the pleasure of sitting down to chat with Art last year. This week we pay tribute to this titan of surf photography with a special re-release of our conversation. Art sheds some light on the state of modern photography, how some photos take on a new meaning with age, and why Bunker Spreckels tried to shoot him in South Africa. Thank you Art for the countless classic images. Rest in Peace, Art.
Stacy Peralta, Co-Founder of Powell & Peralta, award-winning film director and one of the most influential skateboarders of all time. To say Stacy Peralta had an impact on skateboarding and action sports culture as a whole is a bit of an understatement. Stacy grew up in Venice, California. This week, we look into a skateboarding icon, who many say invented the modern style of skating. He was just a kid, when he turned professional, but he certainly lived like an adult. An adult on the edge. He blew off commercials that he landed, and got into the LA punk rock scene, leading to his starting the ball rolling on a terrible murder of one man, and the near death of another. From there, his life continues to be a mess. He shoots cocaine, gets addicted to heroin, and makes terroristic threats. In, and out of prison, only to finally get out... and somehow be even weirder. Grabaron la canción "It's Not Easy" escrita por Muir. En 1989, Suicidal Tendencies volvió a grabar "It's Not Easy" para su lanzamiento Controlled By Hatred / Feel Like Shit ... DejaVu album. Camera... Revolution!/Still Cyco After All These Years. El grupo entraba de lleno en el Thrash Metal con How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today?

How celebrity began to change the face of sport, and how boards went from surf to street. Sneakernomics is a close encounter with the visionaries, artisans and journeymen who've made, and been made, by trainers. We'll follow in the footsteps of mavericks, hustlers and dreamers, and hear their tales of boom and bust, fame and infamy, hope and heartbreak. Across nine episodes, Sneakernomics tells the extraordinary origin stories of some of the world's biggest brands, and how sponsorship deals and celebrity culture redefined our relationship with products. It's also a business story – how leisure has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry; a sports story – how games became organised and grew into a global spectacle; and it's a story of invention – how enthusiastic hobbyist-pioneers often took extraordinary risks that changed the course of sport and fashion. The sneaker story is characterised by fierce competition and rivalry. We explore how the quest to be number one tore families and friendships apart and divided towns. Above all, this is the story of the people behind the shoes. What you'll hear is a mix of interviews with many of the key individuals who've played their part in that extraordinary story, interlaced with moments of fiction inspired by their testimonies and our research. Written and presented by Nicholas Smith, with 1Xtra presenter Ace. The drama is written by Al Smith. Episode 5 Cast: Paul . . . . . Gunnar Cauthery Steve . . . . . Aaron Gelkoff Tony . . . . . Ray Stevens III joins us to talk about his music career and many years in the skateboarding industry. Both music and skateboarding are part of modern culture. Ray is a punk-rock musician who has a superbly-refreshing take on music. I don't think I have met someone as easy to get along with as Ray in quite a long time. Perhaps that is why he has so many high-level friends like Steve Cabellero, Tony Alva and Steve Alba who are also skateboarders and musicians. He's played in too many bands to name over the years. His current focus is on the popular bay area band RS2 Solid Sound. Join the party as we talk about beers, skateboarding, friendship, and our all-time heroes.

Raised in Escondido; Mofo is a straight up legend—a pioneer who created or helped create much of what drew me into the world of skateboarding. His stories are plenty and his miles are many and the people he's shot photos of... you've probably had on your wall. Whether it be early days at Thrasher Magazine, living with Tony Alva in So-Cal, coining and launching the "Skate Rock" department, crashing on Swenson's couch in SF, being front-man for the Drunk Injuns skate rock band, creating logos for Thunder Trucks and SMA, or partying with Skip Engblom in Venice—Mo was there. Hi Atlas and Listeners, I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down and speak with Robert Vargas he is (In my opinion) one of the greatest artists in history. Tune in as we speak about stories that molded him into the artist he is today and the legacy he is leaving for future generations. Robert's art and talent is for every person from every walk of life to enjoy and relate to from the Native Americans the inhabited Los Angeles to The Golden Boys of our society. To gather more perspective on who Robert is please read the piece from wescover.com below. Robert is not only an Artist, he is a real Angelino and it shows in how real his work really is. Please take a listen, I hope you enjoy I know I had fun recording this episode with an old friend. "Robert Vargas is a contemporary artist known for his mixed-media portraits, murals and live events. He was born and raised in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Boyle Heights. Vargas is a leading creative force in the revitalization of Downtown LA's art scene. His paintings and drawings infuse classic genres of portraiture and nudes with an avant-garde explosivity that not only captures the visage and likeness of his subjects but seems to excavate the intimate aspects of their character. Vargas selects his subjects intuitively at his highly attended live-painting sessions, creating powerful and sublime representations of the human connection through his portraiture. His visual vocabulary pulls from life experience, a viscerally sensual approach to line and texture, and an almost mannerist choreography of abstraction and representation that combine to unforgettable effect in his portraits. His best-known works include a City of L.A. commissioned mural "Can't Stop" of legendary Suicidal Tendencies frontman, "Mike Muir, and his "Warrior Odyssey" mural of skateboard Icon and Z-boy legend, Tony Alva for the Kinney Hotel in Venice. In 2013, Vargas was a key figure in helping Los Angeles lift its street art ban while creating his masterpiece, "Our Lady Of DTLA" a four-story mural on Spring street in the heart of downtown L.A. In May 2011, Vargas was named one of LA Weekly's People of the Year and was featured on a limited-edition cover of the issue. His public mural works both in Los Angeles and throughout the world, he sees as a means to reach a wider audience and promote accessible art and community through the creative process. Continuing to shape the way the city's history is written, in the Summer of 2017 he will begin work on his biggest project yet: a fourteen-story mural in L.A. that will rank as the largest mural in the world by a single artist."

This is it! The conclusion of the Skate & Destroy series. In this one, the focus is on some time I spent with the “Alva Posse”, plus the end of my friendship with Gator. Music? Oh, this episode has the best music the late 80’s and early 90’s had to offer - Vencie, CA’s Excel!!! THE Champions of Crossover and thrash metal, Excel. Rad. Two stories of the times that Tony Alva had to chastise me and what happened when Mr. Alva lost his $80.00 sunglasses. Also, the end of my friendship with Gator - hint - it happened shortly before he went to jail for rape and murder. Ugh. Besides that ugliness, this is a really fun episode! Skating. Destroying. Shennanigans aplenty!!!

" Mad" Mark Baker is a skateboarder, entrepreneur, business owner, club promoter, health enthusiast, animal lover and... well, I don’t even know where to start? Basically, he is an enigma of positive energy and someone who has led, what can only be described as a surreal life. When he literally ran away with the circus at just 9 years old, his intensity and lust for life were obvious early on. Since then, Mark became Britain’s first-ever professional skateboarder in the ’70s, a member of the legendary Dogtown and Z-boys (yes, the Californian crew that birthed modern-day skateboarding). He toured the world, skateboarding with the likes of Tony Alva. He co-owned and managed legendary nightclubs in New York; Lotus, Double 7 and the list goes on. Mark’s kindness, sincerity and innate empathy for others resonate throughout everything he does. Mark has found his happy place in Bali where he owns and manages Beach Garden, Juice press New York, In The Raw, and he is the Ambassador For Fun at Omnia nightclub in Uluwatu. Nowadays, Mark lives with his amazing and beautiful Wolf-dogs and his cats. On this week's episode, Mark shares his experiences, challenges, and hopes for the future. On this episode of the podcast, we sit down with renowned photographer Glen E. Friedman. To take a look through some of Friedman's archive is like stepping back into time and getting the chance to live through the subcultures he was there to bare witness to. He created images that would help define a generation. From the Dogtown Days of skateboarding with Tony Alva and Jay Adams, to the raw energy of punk with Black Flag and Minor Threat, to the early days of hip hop with the Beastie Boys and Run DMC, Friedman was there with a camera in hand. The list of recognizable names and artists that he helped visually introduce to the world goes on and on and stands as a testament to his own taste in what he thought was important to photograph. From a very early age, Glen E. Friedman was attracted to photography and began to realize that some of the people that were shooting the culture he was a part of didn't seem to know how to approach it. By the age of 15 he was getting published in Skateboarder magazine, and a few years later he was shooting the punk bands that had begun to become the soundtrack of his own rebellious attitude. After venturing into a new endeavor of managing and producing an album for Suicidal Tendencies, Friedman started to get turned on to some of the new sounds of hip hop coming out of New York. It wasn't long before he became friends with Rick Ruben and Russell Simmons and started shooting some of the iconic album covers that those of us that lived through the 80s and early 90s will definitely remember. Through it all, Friedman always stayed passionate about photography, and tried to only shoot the things that he was moved by. During our conversation we get the chance to ask Friedman what he thinks the next youth movement will be, what it's like to work with some of the biggest names in music, and the advice he gives to others about following their passion. So enjoy our conversation with Glen E. Friedman. To Learn More About Glen E. Friedman Visit: http://burningflags.com/home/ About Visual Revolutionary: http://www.visualrevolutionary.com Because we are interested in people's story, and not what type of gear they use, we introduce a new much needed podcast in the world of photography and filmmaking. Featuring in-depth conversations with some of the world's leading photographers, filmmakers, and other visual artists, we are bringing you the backstory on how they got to where they are today.

We delve into the California skateboard culture of the ‘80s with the Bones Brigade documentary. This week Paco and George "Animal" Chen talk to Bay Area blogger and comedy braintrust OJ Patterson (Courting Comedy, Blackstronauts, Sylvan Productions). Did you play the Tony Hawk video game? Have you been to Tommy Guerrero’s cafe or wondered how to make middle-aged white men cry? We hope to shine some light on these topics and more. Bones Brigade: An Autobiography (2012) Featuring Tony Hawk and directed by Stacy Peralta (Dogtown and Z-Boys, Riding Giants), this is the personal story of how sheer talent, skill, passion and the belief that anything is possible transformed skateboarding from a fringe pastime to a thrilling action sport filled with extraordinary gravity defying feats as well as a global industry. The Bones Brigade is the team they formed that revolutionized not only their lives, but international pop culture as well. With Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, Lance Mountain, Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, Mike McGill, Stacy Peralta, George Powell, Christian Hosoi, Ben Harper, Fred Durst, Shepard Fairey, Tony Alva.OJ Patterson is a retired comedian living in Oakland. BEFORE TONY HAWK, THERE WAS MARTINEZ 360's and fakies were sepcialties of Dennis Martinez, champion skateboarder and legend in the sport, who in the 70's was doing commercials for Pepsi and 7Up, touring the country and skating professionally alongside legends like Stacy Peralta, Pineapple, Tony Alva and Jay Adams. Dennis had a long run with Coccaine and rockstarlike fame and fortune, "I thought it made me skate better 'cause I felt like I had no fear. I had to skate high, not just a little high, I'm talking extremely high. Even at the U.S. Championship in Florida, I probably did $300 worth of dope before the competition." When he sold his beloved World Championship cup for $500 worth of dope, the tailspin was hitting him. "Four friends murdered and one serving a 678-year sentence." Join us as we find out how Dennis went from fame and fortune, to addiction and destruction, rock bottom prison that turned to into a life of joy, purpose and fame in a whole new way.
