Dr. Scott Hamilton holds a M.Div., from George W. Truett Theological Seminary in Religious Education, a Th.M., from Brite Divinity School in Pastoral Theology and Pastoral Counseling, and a Ph.D., from Walden University in Counseling Psychology. Dr. Hamilton has been my academic advisor at Yellowstone Theological Institute where he is currently a Lecturer in Pastoral Care & Counseling and an Academic Administrator. The first class I took with Dr. Hamilton was entitled Pastoral Care & Conflict. We discussed real life situations amongst the students in order to identify healthy and unhealthy ways of dealing with conflict in the church. During one of the classes, I asked Dr. Hamilton the question “how does spiritual warfare impact conflict in the church?”. Though it wasn't originally a topic for the class, it led us to have some great after class conversations. I gave Dr. Hamilton some of Dr. Kraft's books to look over for us to have a frame of reference for our conversation. I asked Dr. Hamilton if he would be willing to help me walk out some of our prayer practices through his tool set and lens as a PhD in counseling psychology. I am keenly aware that we are prayer practitioners and NOT professional counselors and I always want to improve my understanding of scripture and prayer through that perspective.
A brief explanation of spiritual warfare and healing prayer Spiritual Warfare: In closed countries there is an obvious presence of spiritual warfare that may seem different than what you may have experienced in the US. Simply put, Spiritual Warfare is the presence of demonic activity that attacks an individual, group, church, or ministry to try to thwart the work of the Gospel. We can be attacked or tormented by spiritual forces in a real and tangible ways while trying to minister. In many places around the world, people are much more open to this reality than we (westerners) are. At first this may seem unusual or scary, but by biblical standards it is completely normal. “Casting out demons, or exorcism, was a regular and frequent part of the ministry of Jesus, and he taught and commanded his followers to do the same. This command has never been abrogated, and the ministry of deliverance should be even more important today, when the forces of evil are so rampant.”[1] We can see in scripture many examples of the presence of dark forces as well as our need to pray effectively for the dismissal of the presence of evil. Ephesians 6:12- For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. We have to acknowledge the real presence of evil. 2 Corinthians 10:2-4For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh.4 For theweapons ofour warfare are not of the flesh but havedivine powerto destroy strongholds. Christ has given us tools/weapons in prayer to destroy the work of the enemy. Luke 10:17-20 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!”18 And he said to them,“I saw Satanfall like lightning from heaven.19 Behold, I have given you authorityto tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power ofthe enemy, andnothing shall hurt you. Evil is subject to the name of Jesus. Jesus has given us authority to pray in His name. Mark 1:38-40 38 And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” 39 And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons. Demons were present IN the synagogues. Faithful people and churches can be affected by demons. Mark 3:14-1614 And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach15 and have authority to cast out demons. We (like the disciples) are called to preach AND have authority to cast out demons. 1 John 4:4Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. The underlined portion references the Holy Spirit that is in you. The Holy Spirit power in your is actually more powerful than the evil (demons) that are in this world. Authority Matters In Spiritual Warfare In the Luke 10:17-20 (above), Christ tells His listeners that He is giving them “authority” over all the power of the enemy. This means that there is a spiritual hierarchy that is all under the headship and authority of God through Jesus (Matthew 28:18). Christ has given us authority to pray over physical and spiritual places. Our authority is not limited and is effective when praying for othersas Jesus did.[2] The physical world mirrors the authority of the spiritual realm: Authority in the church: The head pastor has authority in the church andis the leader.[3]In order to honor his/her position, we should only teach or train things that are welcomed or approved by the pastor. This has both physical and spiritual implications. Authority over your hotel room: When entering any hotel room, you can pray for cleansing of the space spiritually. When renting a hotel room, the occupant has the legal right to occupy the space. If previous guests have invited any evil or demonic activity or forces by their actions, we (as the new occupants) have the authority to pray and command them to leave in Jesus name. The same concept can be applied to a rented or borrow car. Authority in a home: When entering a home, always seek permission to enter and permission to pray. The owner of the home has the ultimate authority over what is allowed to enter or leave the home. This is true both in the physical sense as well as the spiritual sense. If demons are present, it is because they were given some permission to enter by the homeowner (intentionally or unintentionally). In Cuba, Santeria is a common practice. If Santeria has been practiced in the home, the demonic realm has been given permission to enter the home. It simply needs to be cast out with the owner's permission. Without their permission, it is beyond your spiritual authority.[4] Santeria priests and priestesses often dress in ALL WHITE. In Cuba, you may see them around town and in the markets with some regularity. Santeria worship primarily happens in homes. Rituals and worship often includes the welcoming of spirits to indwell a person. It is prevalent and common in Cuba. Which is why we need to be aware if we are entering others homes. There is nothing to fear when we recognize that the Holy Spirit is more powerful than any of the dark agents that are engaged through Santeria. Prayer Example in case of dark rituals or Santeria: “In the name of Jesus Christ, we have been given authority to pray over this home. We renounce any curses, blood pacts, agreements, or rituals that have invited evil into this home. We are washed in the blood of Christ and now apply His blood to every area of this home and to the occupants of this home. The blood of Jesus has the power to bind the work of the enemy and break every chain that is present, so any dark force that is present here must leave. You are no longer welcome or invited into this home. By the authority of Christ you must leave now and never return. We send you to the throne of Jesus Christ right now and forbid you to enter any other place. We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.” While we are praying for others or over physical spaces, we can ask the Lord to show us what our sphere of authority is before moving out in our own presumptions. We can trust the Holy Spirit to lead us in these prayers. There is no “formula” for prayer when dealing with demonic activity. The concepts are what really matter. When we understand the concept that the evil in this world has less power than the authority of Jesus, we can pray with confidence that it is Jesus who is doing the work…not our words. Our words simply acknowledge who Jesus says we are, and our words command the evil to flee once we know/understand that we have been given authority to do so. When we pray, we can pray with the confidence that God is who He says He is…and that we actually have the power and authority to pray as Jesus taught u[5] Physical Healing Prayers When visiting friends, you may be asked to pray for physical healing of a sick family member. If this is not a normal way of praying for you, here are some things to consider when given that opportunity. Identify your faith and worldviewabout healing. Praying effectively for healing requires a biblical worldview. In a biblical worldview, we understand that the stories of Jesus are real. And like Jesus, we really can see people healed when we pray for them. When we have faith that Jesus really can heal people, we pray like He can heal people. Our faith leads us to pray. When a person is physically healed, it builds the faith of the community around them.[6] One of the primary obstaclesto praying for physical healing is whether webelieve it can happen or not. We must go to the scriptures to understand what the bible says about healing. If we read scripture with our own lenses, we will only find what we already believe there.[7] We can all follow Jesus' example of prayer in scripture. Some have the “gift” of healing. In certain cases, a person may have a gift to heal a very specific kind of disease. Or they may simply have a gift that moves them to pray for healing with great effectiveness. But we do not NEED a gift of healing in order to pray for healing. How did Jesus pray for healing? Mark 5:34 - And He said to her, “Daughter, your faithhas made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.” Luke 5:18-20 18 And behold, some men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and lay him before Jesus, 19 but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. 20 And when he saw their faith, he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” “One thing we see in Scripture again and again is God's concern for the sick. Jesus showed that by healing people everywhere he went. As Matthew recorded, “Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people” (Matthew 4:23). Ministering to the sick was such a significant part of Jesus' ministry that nearly forty percent of the Gospel narratives deal with some aspect of healing. Jesus sought out the sick, giving those who suffered his special attention. No one can refute the fact that Jesus has always been tender toward those plagued by infirmity and disease.”[8] Jesus commands healing and it is done. When we have a posture of expectation we can see the power of God move through healing. How to pray for healing when asked: Ask what the ailment is. Ask what the level of pain is if appropriate to the ailment (maybe on a scale of 1 to 10) Ask if it would be ok to lay hands on them (James 5) Lay your hands on them and pray. Example of how you can pray: Jesus, we bless __(name)__. We ask that you send your ministering angels to protect them as we pray. We have authority in your name to pray as you did Jesus. So we ask in your name for __(name)__ to be healed. Come Holy Spirit and fill __(name)__ with you presence and your peace. We command all darkness to flee in the name of Jesus. Father would you bless us all with greater faith. You alone are worthy of our praise God. Come and heal your servant Father in heaven. You have called us to “raise the dead, heal the sick, and cast out demons” (Matthew 10:8), so as you have commanded us, we are obedient to your word. We love you God and prayer for divine healing over our friend __(name)___. Continue to pray as you feel led…see further notes below. You can ask the Holy Spirit to lead your prayers specifically. Pray whatever you hear/sense/or feel led to pray in your heart or mind. Don't be afraid of silence. Ask for feedback – Is it getting any better? Sometimes healing is a progressive journey of prayer. Maybe it went from an 8 pain level down to a 5. Keep going and keep building faith. God is the one who does the healing, but our prayers can join Him in this work and we can see people healed. When in doubt, you can trust your translator to help your wording. They are likely more used to praying in this way. BE YOURSELF! Be open to praying and simply let God move in your heart. Don't get caught up in thinking there is a “right” way to do it. Use the basic concepts and go for it. We can be naturally supernatural. It doesn't have to be scary when we recognize where the power and where the healing comes from. Look over the notes above and feel free to reach out to ask questions. Welcome to episode number 4. In today's episode we will be talking about the number one lie we believe. The number one lie we believe is that we don't (or can't) hear the voice of God. We've been praying for people for about 10 years, and the main lie that people hear is: I don't hear the voice of God. Often, people experience instant insecurity and fear that the prayer won't work. A conservative christian couple came for prayer at a training event in Dallas. As we talked, they shared that they had been having very direct warfare coming against them. The wife was terrified and exhausted and not sleeping because of tormenting thoughts she was having. The enemy is a liar and was trying to convince her of lies about herself. As you may be reading this or listening to the podcast, you might be hearing lies. We proclaim truth and submit to authority of the trinity, scripture, and we stand on the identity of christ as the priesthood of all believers we can pray on your behalf. As we are sending out this message we are praying that in Jesus name we forbid any work of the enemy or use of lies over any listeners. Keith was coaching a young man who was one of our previous college students who did not believe that he heard the voice of God (we will call him Steve). Keith asked Steve if they could do a little prayer experiment. As Keith prayed, he asked the Lord to bless Steve and anoint him as they talked on the phone. Then Keith asked, "Holy Spirit is there anything you want to show steve?” After waiting a moment, Keith asked Steve what he was sensing or hearing. Steve said, “Yes, I have a situation at work that just came to mind as you asked that.” Keith prayed, “Jesus, would you meet steve in his office.” After a moment, Steve said, "wow that's cool. I see Jesus walking up to me and my coworker and blessing our relationship/friendship. Then Jesus showed me some brokenness in our relationship, and show me that I can trust him to heal the relationship.” Keith said to Steve, “hey, can I offer an observation? About 90 seconds ago you said that you don't hear God's voice very often. Just now as we prayed, what do you think was going on?” Steve stammered a bit and then realized that the short time of prayer was a direct communication from God about a real situation in his life. Steve realized that he was believing the lie that he couldn't hear from God. God was loving and gently getting Steve's attention and revealing Himself to Steve in a tangible way. When the enemy lies to us about not being able to hear from God, and we buy in to that lie, the enemy is getting in the way of our freedom. The enemy knows that if he can get us to question our ability to hear God's voice, then it will keep us from seeking God in that intimate way. We also want to clarify what we mean when we talk about hearing God's voice. To hear the voice of God doesn't have to mean that it's a tangible audible voice. Some people are picture oriented, some are word oriented, some connect with God on nature walks, some connect through songs, throughout the scriptures, and some through writing. When we pray with people, we actually ask the question: What are you sensing as we pray? Often the enemy will try and block your senses so you can't experience the power of God. When we sense this is happening during a time of prayer, we will ask the Lord to remove any blockages and open up all the senses to receive fully what God has for the person we are praying with. John 10:14-17 14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. God is a good God and we know his voice because we are His children. When we first started hearing the voice of God, it was unnerving in a tangible way. Ask the Lord to show you how you “hear” from Him. Another person we prayed with was a strong leader in the church. She received revelation and had a greater understanding of God's voice. The was a great encouragement to her and the Holy Spirit led her to pictures and ideas about her theology. She realized that she was believing that she had to “do" certain things to receive grace. Grace can't be obtained or earned, it can only be received. There is nothing you can do to receive grace, it is a gift of God. She realized that her theology was performance based. We share an image with people as a way of helping understand what's going on inside our heads. Imagine that you are walking around with a helmet on your head. On this helmet are and are 3 antennas. The main antenna in the middle of your helmet is the YOU antenna. It is your thoughts, your theology, your history, personality type, etc. That's the antenna that allows us to think and interact and create thoughts. The second antenna is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We are all trying to tune our antenna in to this second antenna. This refers tp Romans 12:2 To be transformed by the renewing of your mind. The third antenna, is the enemy's antenna. The enemy can't control you, but he can influence your thinking. We like to say that it's like he's trying to wrap his antenna around our antenna so that we can't clearly discern our own thoughts. In this way, we can visualize the influence of our thoughts. When someone is having a hard time connecting with God in prayer, we will command the enemy to unwind the antennas. Using this visual tool, the person often experiences clarity of thought and can hear much more clearly. We will pray in the name of Jesus for the enemy to stop using the person's voice against them. This serves as a tool to separate the lies of the enemy from any improper thinking the person may be experiencing. The person then will begin to hear the lies more clearly and realize that that voice is not theirs but is actually the enemies voice trying to hold them back from freedom. Some of the lies that Megan believed was that she was too sensitive. She was emotional as a child and her emotions confused people. Her emotions felt unhealthy and the she believed lies that were actually holding her back from the gifts God had for her. Seek the Lord through prayers and scripture. It is also helpful to identify what might be holding you back from faith and hearing His voice? Connect with us if you'd like to do some experiments in prayer!
Get these books: In this episode: The first training Keith went to to learn about spiritual warfare and healing and deliverance How Megan and I were both transformed by that prayer process. Garbage and Rats After being confronted by the witch doctor, which we shared in episode 2, we reached out to our missions agency for help. Dr Charles Kraft was coming to train several of our missionaries As Keith prepared for this training with Dr. Kraft, he read all the required readings and began to be stretched and get excited about the conference. While Keith went to california for the training, Megan stayed behind with the kids. In the beginning of all of this, Megan felt like this was more Keith's journey than hers. She wasn't as open and had very limited understanding about all that Keith was learning. At the training: Keith gets to the training in Pasadena with 150 other missionaries from all over the world. Dr. Kraft began to talk about the realities of angels and demons and it being an every day part of life. Dr. Kraft shared about how he directly communicates with demons and that sounded absolutely crazy to Keith. Keith's world view was begin confronted. The bible did talk about signs and wonders, and the demon possessed man, but the filter on Keith's mind was that that was what Jesus did back then, not today. Demon's demystified: The word demon needs to be demystified. There is a reality that demons are dark forces, filled with evil, and we live in a supernatural world. If we are going to talk about angels, resurrection, Christmas, the virgin birth of Jesus, then we have to talk about the reality of evil and how that evil confronts us. The word demon sounds scarier than it actually is. We have more power as children of God than any demonic force on this planet. Garbage and Rats: Dr. Kraft used a tangible picture to help us understand spiritual warfare. Imagine a pile of garbage and rats feasting on that garbage. The garbage represents the things that the enemy uses against us. Dr. Kraft said that if the enemy was going to torment us that he had to have some type of purpose, reason, or permission to do that (the garbage). If we left a pile of garbage on our floor, eventually rats would find it. When a human walks in to the room the rats will scurry and run b/c they know we have more power and authority. If the garbage is left on the floor, and I leave the room, then the rats will eventually come back. So here is how this analogy plays out in our spiritual life: The brokenness, woundedness, and stuff that attracts the rats. This healing prayer model that Dr. Kraft was teaching was showing us that because Christ has been there with us from the beginning, that no matter when in our life that we experienced garbage, that Jesus can come in to that place/experience in our our life and clean up that garbage. Dr. Kraft often quotes that says God knit you together in your mother's womb and has been there since the beginning. (10:33) That verse teaches us that Christ is always with us so by inviting Jesus in to those broken moments, Jesus cleans up the garbage and takes the food from the rats away, and then we can tell those rats they have to get out and go straight to the cross in Jesus name. This process brings powerful healing. Megan: Dr Kraft taught us how to do healing and deliverance in a way that was healing and gentle and kind and not scary. Holly wood has distorted spiritual warfare in to being something scary but if we operate under the authority we are given in Jesus name it doesn't have to be scary.
In this episode: How we first started to hear the voice of God more clearly How hearing God allows us to follow His will Ministry Background We moved to East Dallas and became missionaries God was challenging us to live a life of radical hospitality and radical transformation There were people in our lives that were not going to come to church, so how do we create an environment of transformation for those folks? As missionaries we had to depend on hearing God's voice to know what the next steps were. Megan realized she was being called to ministry as well. Prayer Experiences Megan felt the Lord asking her to pick up a pen and start writing Megan started writing down full sentences in her prayer journal during group prayer. As soon as she wrote down her words, someone across the room would say what she had just written down. God was developing a gift of scribing in Megan. From then on, she has heard the voice of God through the writing of her pen. Keith received a clear message from the Lord: Keith wherever you go , has to be totally rooted in orthodox christianity, and totally open to the power of the Holy Spirit, so that you can operate the way I've made you. Keith's internal antenna/knower began to hear the voice of God very clearly and God's instructions were very specific and clear. Confront the Lie - “I don't hear from God very much” We want to encourage you, that you hear the voice of God, YOU DO. We have experienced a vibrant, growing, passionate relationship with Jesus through the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as he speaks to us daily. Listeners, our ears, hearts, eyes, entire bodies were designed by a God who wants to communicate with us. The Witchdoctor Confronted We had a group over for diner and Megan disappears to go check on the kids and just doesn't come back. Keith gets concerned and goes to check on Megan. An African woman dressed in tribal clothing and looked like a witch doctor with beads hanging off her clothing and strange relics all over her. This is a hostile situation and we need the Lord's direction on how to get this witch doctor off of our property. Keith asked the Holy Spirit to lead him. The Spirit led Keith to "bless her in the name of Jesus” . When Keith prayed this she ran off the property. This podcast has been all about the journey that we have been on as we learned to listen to God and be obedient to what He's asking us to do.
