    [Re-Release] - Derailed Dayjobs

Play Episode Listen Later May 26, 2023 28:08

This week we're digging more into work and research. How happy are others in their jobs? Why do people leave? What effect can our jobs have on us? One of the things that we found interesting was just how many people quit their boss when they decide to leave their job. We might love what we do, but the person that's either directly above us or the head of the company might cause us to quit altogether. It makes a huge different when it comes to happiness in the workplace if we like (or don't like) our supervisors. Whether it's micromanaging or setting unrealistic expectations, having a not so great boss can take a toll. We also get into how so many of us (half of us in fact) are disengaged with our jobs. We go through the motions and it's so easy to do. It can cause a toxic environment which can easily overflow into our home lives and personal lives. Every person that works for any company is an important part. They don't have to close $10,000 sales to be important. Maybe it's just someone who comes in on his or her day off to help out. What about vacation? We are shocked to discover that the United States is the only country (of 38 countries) in the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) that doesn't require paid vacation time. How is this even possible? Why aren't we better? Our jobs are a huge contributor to mental health and stress. We can have the best jobs in the world, but still feel the weight of stress. Even if we're doing something that we love, we need to take some time and take a break. Many of us take our work home with us and it can bleed into our home lives. It can affect our mood and relationships. We want to point out how it's important to take some time and reflect on our feelings in regards to our work. If we self-evaluate, we can start to work on ways to change those things. When we are in the midst of everything, it's so difficult to isolate those feelings and realize what's causing it. And if it's within our power, we should find a new place of work. It's not easy, but it's necessary.  There's no rule that says that we have to be at a job forever. We can always be on the look out for something that makes us happy and to find that passion. If we have a job that makes us miserable, it isn't worth all of the money in the world. It's not worth it to put yourself or your loved ones through that stress. There's always something else. It's not always easy to find. But it's worth it to be happy. Follow Us! We're back with another episode of The Fallible Femmes. In this episode the Femmes dig a little deeper into sibling relationships. They wanted to look at what healthy sibling relationships look like and encourage those who have children to nurture those relationships. Having a sibling is truly a blessing and it shouldn't be taken for granted. They first look into healthy sibling relationships and how to cultivate them, such as promoting sibling bonding time and avoiding comparison. Each child has their strengths and it's so important to recognize a child's strength without exposing the other's weakness. Mindy and Andrea also get into the pros and cons of siblings. In an article entitled, "The Good, the Bad, and the Questionable," the cons are something that the femmes can identify within their own sibling relationships, from constant fights to sharing everything. But of course there are pros which include moments of solidarity and forever friends. A lot of times, for those of us who have siblings, our brothers and sisters are our first friends. This can continue on to the end of our lives. The femmes continue on their path by ending with an article that goes through all the ways that our siblings shape who we are. Ways like developing a sense of humor and providing later life support. More often than not, siblings (children) outlive their parents, and it's nice to think, if we're lucky, that our sibling will be with us to tell stories of our youth and wax poetically about a life well lived. Take a moment to listen to this latest episode! And share it with a friend, or even a sibling... This is another way that the femmes are fallible and they wanted to clear the air. So many of us struggle with our finances. Whether it's student loans, credit card debt, or trouble saving that rainy day fund, you are not alone. Andrea and Mindy get into their credit card debt, the battle to get it under control, and rid it from their lives. Mindy tells the story of how her car was broken and her purse was stolen a while ago. She had no cash and no money available. She had bills to pay and the first card that was replaced was a credit card. She had to use it to survive. But as the money came back and she had access to her bank account and actual money, it was difficult to pay off the credit card. And so the cycle began. Andrea talks about how she went a long time without getting a credit card and when she finally got one, it didn't take too long for the swipes to build up. She also goes into some details about the journey she's on to pay off that credit card debt. While she's got a little ways left to go, she's managed to get it down to one credit card payment and make a dent. But even with the progress she's made, she still finds herself making purchases that she doesn't need to make. They recognize how these methods might seem simple, but it's not as easy as snapping your fingers. It takes work and some navigation to find out what works. Another approach to adding productivity to your life (whether it be work or personal), is to separate your task list into 4 different categories using the Eisenhower Matrix (sources from todoist.com - listed below in the resource section). We're back for a brand new episode! This week the femmes are getting into the psychology behind procrastination. This is a tough topic, because it's not as easy as saying, "I'm lazy." There's often more to the topic of procrastination than the surface value we might tend to look at. Mindy and Andrea get right into this topic by taking a procrastination quiz. Now, while this is a bit dated, it might give you a good jumping off point to gauge your own procrastination tendencies. The femmes also brush on the topic of the overwhelming influence of screen time and what it truly means to be bored. We live in a world where we are constantly bombarded with distractions, anything to avoid the stillness of the mind. But maybe we need to change the way we engage in our distractions and let ourselves breath. We think that we need those distractions, but perhaps what we're doing is ignoring a bigger problem. It's as if these other things we've allowed into our lives are holding us captive and we have to fight through the noise and attempt to deprogram ourselves. This is no simple task, but perhaps we can get there. In this episode, Mindy and Andrea take a deep dive into their own procrastination tendencies, and even admit how difficult it is to break those habits and create new ones while also being aware of the dangers in labeling ourselves as procrastinators, which could result in a self-fulfilling prophesy. *Trigger Warning* In this episode Mindy and Andrea get into some sensitive topics involving grief, depression, and mental health. Mindy and Andrea are digging in a bit deeper into grief. The femmes look into ways to help navigate the grieving process as well as taking a look at some things that we let fall through the cracks. Mindy first points out that it's important to seek help if you find yourself being overwhelmed by grief that can be overwhelming and too much to handle on your own. Andrea sites a source that goes into how grief and depression can overlap. Grief and depression are very complex and something may happen in our live that can trigger depression and we don't even know it. Grief can hit us so intensely and so hard that we don't know how to handle it. Next, Mindy gets into ways to navigate the holiday season when dealing with loss. In an article from Harvard, she goes through the list of healthy and positive ways to cope during this time when maybe this is the first holiday season without your loved one. Suggested ways include: start a new tradition, change the celebration, give yourself time, and more. Time is something that comes up a lot in the conversation and in research. Across the board, Mindy and Andrea talk about how time is so important. Time is necessary and everyone's timeline is different. Healing is not linear it ebbs and flows. One minute we feel fine and then maybe years down the road that grief and that pain comes back up. When it comes to grieving, there are things that we should and shouldn't be doing. Like allowing ourselves to cry, giving ourselves some time, don't keep feelings bottled up, and let other people help you. Mindy and Andrea take a moment to point out how there is no shame in feeling your feelings. We are taught to push down our feelings and there's no reason for us to do that. Another helpful source that Andrea brings up comes from an article from the Psych Central website. She gets more into other healthy ways to navigate grief, such as healing together, acknowledge your feelings, engage in healthy activities, practice deep breathing, and more. Perhaps you're someone who knows someone who has experienced loss and you don't know what to do. Both Andrea and Mindy talk about how sometimes it's good to be the go to person or the person who just sits and listen, being available and providing a safe place. We all go through grief differently, even if we have similar losses. Mindy and Andrea finish up the episode by encouraging those who are experiencing grief or depression or another form of a mental health issue to reach out to some one and seek help. They reiterate how there is no shame in seeking help and acknowledging your mental health. In this week's episode, Mindy and Andrea are talking about grief. This is a tough subject, but it's one that needs to be discussed. It's not easy to talk about grief and all of the deep feelings that come with it. Mindy talks about loss that she just experienced and dives into an important takeaway from losing people. Life is short and we shouldn't let it pass us by. As they get into the intense and complicated feelings that come from grief (feelings that you can't outrun), Andrea points out that we shouldn't think about the things that we didn't do but move forward and do the things we want to do in the future. Our lives start today and we can't change the past. It's set in stone. We can only change the future and live in the now. They also talk about letting yourself feel grief and that there isn't a timeline for it. Whoever you are, it's so crucial for you to feel your feelings and when the tears start to dry and the pain starts to lessen, it's time to move forward. You can't dwell and you can't stop your life. We must keep going. Mindy and Andrea stress the necessity of gratitude and being thankful for what you do have. Whether it's something as simple as air conditioning or that fact the we're still breathing. Every day is a gift. As we're getting into the holiday season, we start to feel and become more aware of those who aren't around us. And that's okay. We should remember them and honor them by living. Because we can. We get to.

Follow Us! Workly Woes Part 2 (Andrea's Accounts)

This week is part 2 of us talking about our work history. Last week we tackled Mindy's moments. From first jobs to college. This week we are finishing up with Andrea's accounts. So, if you haven't listened to part 1, now's the time to hit pause and give it a listen! We get into how sometimes the plan that we have for ourselves doesn't always work the way that we envision it to. Sometimes we get to a point in our lives where we have to take a break and take a look at our lives, and figure out the best path. It's not always easy and it's not always as simple as getting to point B from point A. There are so many points that can happen in between. When the plans we have don't work out the way we want it to, it can feel like the end of the world. It can make us feel like failures, but just because our plan got diverted, doesn't mean that we failed. And sometimes it takes us doing something drastic to redirect our lives. We have to give it some self-reflection and figure out what we want to do. Just because we aren't on our original plans doesn't mean that new steps can't be taken to create a new plan, a better plan. Sometimes it feels like no matter how hard we try, we can still get the short end of the stick when it comes to promotions. It's not fair, but there's not much we can do it about. We just have to cut our losses and move on. Each experience and job that we have shape us for the next one so we can find that one place where we truly fit. It might take a while, but all of us can and will find that special place where we know our worth and feel appreciated. While it might feel that we failed, it's just that we haven't found the place where we are supposed to be yet. We reflect on the fact that if we haven't gone through the various jobs that we had in the past (good or bad), then we might not even be here right now recording this podcast. Two steps forward and one step back is still moving forward. It might take longer but you will get there. We will get there. Your destination is not your next step, it's many many steps. If you're in the thick of it, you can't always see it. And the longer something takes the better it is, the more precious it is. If you feel disheartened in your life, you are where your younger self wishes she could be.

This week we're talking about our first jobs and our work history. Work plays a vital role in our lives as far as mental and physical health goes. Also in this episode, we get off on a lot of math tangents. Somehow math has a way of creeping into our conversations. This week we're really focusing on Mindy's journey and her work career. She takes us on some peaks and valleys as she has navigated the workforce, with her side jobs and jobs that only lasted a week. The important thing that we cover in the episode has to do with how the plans we have for our lives don't always work the way that we had intended. It takes a lot of work and patience, but we will get through it one way or the other. We both get into how working retail is just a vortex of crazy. For those of you who've worked in retail, we feel your pain. And for those of you who haven't, you're so lucky that you've never had to endure that mess. Retail isn't for everyone. You take a verbal beating from those who just don't care about your feelings or the fact that you are a person. You have to develop a thick skin to handle some people. We definitely learned the lesson that niceness goes a long way. So often we feel the pressure of friends and/or family to pursue careers and lives that might not be something that we see ourselves in. It takes a lot of perseverance to hone in on our goals and passions and figure out exactly what we want to do despite those pressures we feel. We might have to divert halfway through our journey and start a brand new one, but when it's something we want to do, it's worth it. It's nice when you have a plan that works out and we realize there are many people who have a plan early on and they follow through with it. They get it and they know exactly what they want to do. And that's amazing. But for the other side, it takes a lot of twists and turns, trial and error, and time to truly figure out the path that we need and want to get on. We have to remember that if it's something that we don't want to do, it's not forever. It's okay to start fresh and try something new. When we feel it in our core that there has to be something better out there for us, we must listen to that feeling and keep searching. Sometimes we even have to relocate to find where we are truly meant to be. It doesn't happen overnight. We believe that everything happens for a reason and it might take a little longer than we thought. It's so important to explore and figure out what you want to do. There's no limit on how many jobs you can apply for and even if you have an interview that goes terribly it's worth it to get the experience. You don't have to be at a job that you don't like. You might have to wait it out for a bit, but you can do research as you wait. Don't like something like your job or where you are in this moment in time define the rest of your life. You deserve to find something that you love.

    Diet Culture Dropouts

Trigger Warning: We are briefly talking about eating disorders in this episode. We don't get into the nitty gritty, but we do talk about it in passing as it relates to Diet Culture. In this episode, we are talking about Diet Culture. We're going to get more into it. We're affected by Diet Culture daily whether we realize it or not. According to ChoosingThearpy.com, "Diet culture refers to a rigid set of expectations about valuing thinness and attractiveness over physical health and emotional well-being. Diet culture often emphasizes “good” versus “bad” foods, focuses on calorie restriction, and normalizes self-deprecating talk."  Next we shift into food shame. We pulled an article from the Goop website that talks about this. According to Judith Matz “Diet culture creates a moral issue out of eating the ‘right' foods,” she says. “It leads to culturally induced body hatred, which results in fat-shaming and weight stigma. It affects all of us—our friends, colleagues, and children.” Food Shaming is something that we all do and it's not always something that we do intentionally and is often internalized. We're trying to break away from labeling foods as either good or bad. It doesn't help us on our journey to become healthier versions of ourselves. This is something we're constantly working on. We get caught in this circle. We eat something that we realize is not great for us, we feel shame, and instead of moving on, we continue spiraling until we make ourselves physically ill. We have this “if we can't beat ‘em, join ‘em” mentality that turns into a never ending circle. We have to shift our thinking to break the cycle. Next, we shift into diet culture as it relates to social media. Social media plays a big part in how we see people. An article from UC San Diego's Recreation site states: “According to a social media usage survey conducted in 2019, 90% of American 18 – 29-year-olds indicated that they use any form of social media daily. Because social media is so universal and influential in today's society, posts can be impactful. Pulling from Carly Compton's article from the National Alliance for Eating Disorder's Website: “Life becomes much more free once you fully understand and then consciously reject toxic diet culture. It's like any other toxic relationship that you must end in order to grow and become the best version of yourself… Diet Culture is designed for you to never be satisfied, for you to always fail. Instead of spending your time and energy trying to lose weight or attempting to please others through your physical appearance, use that time to grow.”  We reflect on why and how the diets that we've been on have failed because of how we went into these diets and why we did them to begin with. Generally there's a time limit or a specific goal in mind with a diet. When we check a box and complete the diet or reach the goal, we tend to shut the door and fall back into the habits that we know.  We'll get there. One way or the other we will figure out what's best for us. Check out our website! www.thefalliblefemmes.com IG: @thefalliblefemmes Resources we mentioned!
