Send us a textKrys tells of the Gettysburg Orphanage. This was started due to a picture of a family of a perished soldier in the area. Sergeant Amos Hurniston was the soldier that started this by dying with the picture of his fam. The orphanage was built to house the orphans of Union soldiers. While this began as a noble idea, this soon turned into something more sinister. Yeah, not good and a breeding ground for ghosts. Tori takes us to another battlefield, Yorktown. Seemed like it was time for Revolutionary War battlefields. This was the most well known as the last land battle of the Revolutionary War. This was a siege that finally gave the US its independence. Fun fact, The World Turned Upside Down is an actual British drinking song and not just a Hamilton reference. You want ghosts, they got ghosts. Send us a textTori leads off with the Capuchin Crypt in Rome. The monks used the bones to make works of art throughout the Crypt and the chapels therein. The next one was the Palermo Capuchin Crypt. This one is even creepier because the whole place is full of mummies. You heard me right, mummies. This was apparently a very big status symbol to be a mummy interred in the crypt. Guess what y'all, there are ghosts and they like hanging out with prettiest mummy in the world. Krys tells us of the Witches Village. This site has striking parallels with Salem in the States. This was yet another story about demonizing women. This strife ended up pitting villagers against their neighbors. Triora stands to this day and they embrace history both bad and good. Tori comes back with the island of Poveglia. Send us a textKrysti leads off with the Curran Theater in San Francisco. This was a hotbed of crime as well as the theater arts. From murder to catching criminals in front of the building, guess what, you want ghosts, that's how you get ghosts. Tori comes in second with terrible pronunciation and Dragholm Castle in Zealand Denmark. This castle survived several iterations and has a shady past. It's been known to have over 100 ghosts. Several tropes show up in this story, including a lady in white, a gray lady, a mad squire, and prisoner bishop. Tori keeps it going with the Skirrid Inn in Wales, which at being over 900 years o;d has seen it's share of history and ghosts. Krys finishes us off with the Watson-Curtze Mansion at Hagen History Center. Send us a textTori leads off with Taunton State Hospital in Massachusetts. Not surprisingly this hospital didn't have a great reputation. But guess what it does have, you got it, ghosts. Parts of this hospital are still in operation today. Krys follows up with the Presidio and its illustrious history. This has been a landmark of San Francisco for years upon years. Send us a textGuess what kids?! Your favorite weird ass Hoosier girls are back in your ears. This week we hit up California for our stories. Krys leads off with the Sutro Baths. These were mainstays of San Francisco for years before shockingly taken out by a mysterious fire. Sutro had a tendency to accumulate relics from around the world, sounds like a great idea right? Oh, can someone figure out what land this was built on? Cliff House was next up and that was another problem waiting to happen. And it did. Tori covers the Queen Mary that has been a popular Long Beach attraction at this point. This ship saw it's share of deaths and has ghost tours to this day. This luxury liner made 1001 trips before coming to port for the last time. The Grey Ghost had a more interesting past than expected. Krys rounds the episode off with the San Francisco City Hall. An earthquake managed to take that sucker out. Also proves that when you build on old cemetery, bad things may happen. The EU must prioritise digital skills development, bridge the existing skills gap, and foster an innovation-driven environment. By embracing AI and equipping its citizens with the necessary skills, the EU can navigate current challenges and secure its position as a global leader in the digital era. In the third episode of this five-part miniseries, we look at AI's role in workplace and productivity. In this episode we speak with Andrea Renda, Head of Global Governance, Regulation, Innovation and the Digital Economy at The Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), a think tank based in Brussels that undertakes research “leading to solutions to the challenges facing Europe today". Anna Anderson, CEO and Co-Founder of RigaTech Girls, an NGO which is the only organisation in Latvia specifically dedicated to the cause of advancing women in technology. We are in the sixth mass extinction phase and it's primarily driven by human activity. Globally, 1.2 million species are at risk of extinction and around 70% of the planet's ice-free land has already been altered, primarily for agricultural use. In the second episode of this five-part miniseries, we look at AI's role in sustainability and how it can help us better understand the natural world. In Europe, unsustainable farming and forestry, urban sprawl and pollution are predominantly to blame for a drastic decline in biodiversity. This latest era of extinction in the natural world also comes at a time when we are making giant leaps in an artificial realm and while AI is no silver bullet it could help us better understand how to sustainably reinvent our agriculture, farming and food systems. Protecting species is also of the utmost importance. Insects, for example, are an important piece in the biodiversity puzzle and are under threat. But AI can help us understand our insect friends and the environment they serve. In this episode we speak with Faustine Bas-Defossez, Director for Nature, Health and Environment at the European Environmental Bureau, which is the largest federation of environmental NGOs in Europe, where she discusses how AI can help understand the problems that exist within the agricultural industry and the importance of transforming our food systems to a more sustainable, circular model. Katharina Schmidt, CEO of APIC.AI, an AI startup from Germany that monitors bee populations, tells us how AI models are helping to analyse individual bee behaviours in a hive of 50,000, and what this tells us about the health of our environment. Adam Elman, Head of Sustainability, EMEA, at Google further extols the value that AI can bring to mapping key environmental change and the value of data sharing on a global scale. The advent and speed of advancement in AI has far reaching consequences for multiple industries. This five-part miniseries will spotlight various industry sectors where AI has a significant and growing impact, with this particular episode centering on AI's role in healthcare.AI in healthcare offers life changing benefits as well as raising far reaching concerns. In the medical arena, various AI programmes like Large Language Models and Foundation Models are being used in many specialities, both in research and clinically. AI's ability to rapidly process vast amounts of data and identify subtle patterns affords unrivalled potential within medicine. It can also help save money by streamlining processes. But there are risks. As the technology advances so do concerns over inaccurate diagnoses that could exacerbate health inequalities that already exist in the system. Another area of particular focus is the transparency and trust of the AI models being built. This is where the importance of regulation comes in. We speak with Dr Alan Karthikesalingam, Senior Staff Clinician Scientist and Research Lead at Google who offers his insight into the research and clinical applications of AI in healthcare. Greg Sorensen, Lead at Aidence, shows how AI is being used in the clinical screening of lung cancer, a key prevention tool that is already saving lives. Inma Martinez, chair of the multi expert group at the global partnership on AI addresses the importance of regulation and governance of AI in healthcare and beyond. Our Sources for the show: FT Resources, CEPR, European Parliament research, CSET, BMJ, KCL.This content is paid for by Google and is produced in partnership with the Financial Times' Commercial Department. Oceans cover 71% of the planet's surface and are a life support system making up 97% of the world's water and 95% of all space made available for life. Oceans are a key climate regulator, sequestering a third of all carbon emitted by human activity a year, controlling the weather and mediating temperature. With this alone, their importance to our existence is paramount. But oceans also support an entire economy, a ‘blue economy'. Alas, rising sea levels and temperatures due to climate change, overfishing, man made pollution and other mismanagement is affecting the blue economy and those that rely on it. Furthermore, oceans can provide us with a revolution in power generation. They offer a natural and low carbon alternative to fossil fuels and are the world's largest untapped source of renewable energy. In this episode of the Next Five we explore the oceans as a blue economy, a climate regulator, and a power generator all while reflecting on the importance of ocean preservation. Céline Cousteau, a documentary filmmaker, public speaker, author and socio-environmental advocate highlights the importance of the oceans to all life on earth and how we need more marine protected areas and laws to preserve our seas as well as sharing examples of successful marine preservation projects.Karine Measson, Head of Water Management at the European Investment Bank, who is responsible for ocean activities at the EIB talks about the importance of a sustainable blue economy, and how to overcome the challenges including access to fundable projects and international cooperation. Miguel Stilwell d'Andrade, CEO, EDP and EDP Renewables discusses the growth in demand for ocean based renewable energy and that both the capital and technology is there to help meet climate goals if short term challenges can be overcome. Ever since the emergence of sundials and water clocks in Egypt around 1500 BC, humans have been fascinated by timepieces. Over the centuries, portable clocks, pocket watches and wristwatches gave people the chance to carry time around with them. Many of these became status symbols – the luxury of portable time afforded to only the few. And now, with the advent of wearable tech over the past decade, what is on our wrist has come to tell us much more than simply the time. Whether it's Swiss watches or wearable tech, the status of watches is evolving. In our productivity-obsessed world, our lives are driven by accurate timekeeping – and now we have multiple devices, reminders and calendars to keep us on track. So how is our relationship with time evolving now that it is commoditised, and what role will watches play in a digitally dominated future? In this episode of The Next Five podcast we explore the future of watches, timekeeping in a digital world, and the psychology behind our fascination with time. François-Henry Bennahmias, CEO of Audemars Piguet, talks about the current watch market, the strength of luxury Swiss watchmaking vs wearable tech, and how mechanical timepieces maintain their status in a digital world. Andreas Zimmer, Head of Product for Huawei Europe, offers insights into the wearable watch world and the role that the tech-led wristwatch play in modern life. Dr Ruth Ogden, Associate Professor of Experimental Psychology at Liverpool John Moores University, discusses how we, as humans, have developed a relationship with time, and how the products we use affect what we do with it.Our Sources for the show: FT Resources, Forbes, EY, Bloomberg, Insider Intelligence, Morgan Stanley, pyments.com, appleinsder.com. EVs are already displacing 1.5million barrels of oil usage per day or 3% of total road fuel demand, however emissions from vehicles are still responsible for between 12-16% of global emissions. But now imagine a world where there are no ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) cars on the road. That's the future that is needed if we are to hit net zero targets. To realise this by mid century annual EV sales must hit 138 million units by 2040.In this episode of The Next Five podcast we take a deep-dive into the current landscape, tackle the future for EVs from industry leaders in the legacy and pure EV space, and highlight the opportunities and challenges along the way. Adrian Chai, Managing Director, Institutional Banking Group at DBS Bank discusses the gaps in finance in the EV value chain and where capital needs to flow to support the industry growth, as well as the future of the fast evolving battery market. Pras Ganesh, Executive Vice President & Corporate Information Security Officer at Toyota talks about the challenges and opportunities that legacy automakers have in the space, how capital investment is front loaded in new technologies and calls for a just transition. Mike Whittington, Head of Global Sales and Network at Polestar offers insight from a pure EV business model, extolling the need for supportive policy and greater investment into infrastructure globally to meet climate targets. Global supply chains are near breaking point. The pandemic showed their weaknesses and geopolitical tensions, like Ukraine, have exacerbated the issue. And yet the biggest issue facing our world is climate change - and supply chains have a big part to play in the solution. But with complex global supply chains comes challenges - mainly maintaining net zero agendas across multiple partners. Arco Berkenbosch, VP Innovation and Development at Smurfit Kappa tells us how collaboration and experimentation are key to success and that sustainable packaging can make a big difference to our climate goals. Abe Eshkenazi, Chief Executive Officer, Association for Supply Chain Management also extols the virtues of technology to offer visibility across partners and calls for consumer demands to change to help make supply more sustainable. Krys is back! Tori gets a head start on spooky season by way of a cemetery in Salem! Howard Street Cemetery in Salem has a place in the Salem Witch Trials and was the site of the pressing death of Giles Corey. Krys tells the story of the Vulcan Hotel in New Zealand. This mining town is now the home to 10 living souls but some of the dead have stayed. Rosie, curling, a post office, and the school all play parts in this story. Krys regales us with the tale of the White River Light in Whitehall Michigan. This lighthouse is currently a maritime museum and not currently in service as a lighthouse. William Robinson was the keeper of the lighthouse and stayed with his family at the location. William was the lighthouse keeper until two weeks before his death when the keeper position was given to his grandson. Shipwrecks were found within the area and William seems to still be in residence at the lighthouse. It also lies within the Michigan Triangle, coincidence? I think not…Tori rounds it out with the tale of Mary King's Close in Edinborough Scotland. This little slice of history is in the middle of Old Town Ediborough and gives insight into the lives of folks from 1645 to 1902 when the last tenant left. Tours still run to this day and has some extra visitors that make their presence know to this day. Tori starts off with a paranormal hotspot, the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. This is supposedly the most haunted place in the US. Unfortunately like a good majority of psychiatric hospitals, the institution was plagued with tragedies and abuse allegations. The amount of hauntings due to this history is astounding. Krysti tells us about why Hoosiers are weird and some odd goings on to settle a county seat. Leavenworth Indiana was the county seat and was moved by force into English Indiana. County records and county officials were taken by force to the new county seat of English. Krys dipped into Angola, Indiana and its ghosts just for Tori. Tori starts with another of her hyperfocuses, federal parks, in particular Yosemite National Park. This park paved the way for the National Park Service and it's current mission in the US. This park has soooooo many stories and Tori gives some quick little stories as a taste of things to come. She has plans to revisit this park's stories and give you more of the interesting tales for there. Krysti gives us some interesting stories close to home and from a place close to sexy voice guy. Starting with the Rose Hotel which of course in on the National Register of Historic Places. Thought to be a toll house this hotel has gone through many incarations including the current version as a bed and breakfast. Def haunted. Next up we have the Asher Walton House in Atlanta IN. This haunted location has some ties to the haunted Roads Hotel as well. Last up we have Fischer Theater in Danville IL, more to come on that story. Our Sources: nationalparkreservations.com, nps.gov, roadtrippers.com, ranker.com, atthefischer.com, downtowndanville.org, illinoishauntedhouses.com, enjoyillinois.com, historicrosehotel.com, onlyinyourstate.com, chicagotribune.com, dailyegyptian.com, bumpinthenight.net, townpost.com, allevents.inOur theme music: “Danse Macabre - Busy Strings" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Support our show on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/trendylobotomypodcast Find us at FB/Instagram @TrendyLobotomyPod and at Twitter @TrendyPod as well as our blog trendylobotomypodcast.blogspot.com Support the show

Krysti starts us off with the Culbertson Mansion in New Albany Indiana. This mansion was built by William Culbertson in 1867. By 1870 William was the second most wealthy man in Indiana. He lived in the house with several of his wives and at least three of his children were raised there. The amount of spooky stuff at this locale is substantial, doors opening and closing, lights on and off, menacing feelings, and of course EVPs. Tori brings up the rear with what you may ask? Cemeteries and not just cemeteries but a whole town that was started as a necropolis. Yes folks, a whole city where the dead outnumber the living at 1.5 million to 1800-1600 living souls. Next time you head to San Francisco ask yourself where the cemeteries are. Colma CA would be the answer to that question. With several mass graves due to the relocation from San Francisco, you would think spooky stuff would be the norm of the situation. You want ghosts? We managed to have a grab bag episode. Tori leads off with Potato Creek State Park and it's stories of ghosts, cemeteries, and of course a premier birding destination. This reclaimed park has the fields of no for Krysti. Ghost kids, unseen hands, and women screaming. Krys follows up the story of the Starr Piano Factory. This factory has seen it's share of famous artists that recorded there. Also a shitload of ghosts. The factory stands to this day, albeit in a way different manner than the original. Switch to Tori telling about the Lincoln Park and the Lincoln Park Zoo and its beginning as the Chicago City Cemetery. This cemetery went the way of most large cemeteries in cities which equals ghosts and bodies under both the park proper and the zoo. Up next we have Krys telling the tale of New Harmony Indiana and it's almost utopian time in Indiana. Can we say cult? This has a long history of educated folks. Tori closes it out with the White Eagle Saloon and Hotel. This rowdy bar has it's fair share of ghosts and strange goings on.Our Sources: in.gov, onlyinyourstate.com, lpzoo.org, choosechicago.com, illinoishauntedhouses.com, chicagohauntings.com, illinoishauntedhouses.com, chicagonow.com, mcmenanmins.com, portlandghosts.com, haintedhouses.com, oregonhauntedhouses.com, ndianamuseum.org, Archive.curbed.com, Socialwelfare.vcu.edu, Legendsofamerica.com, Mrlinfo.org, Publichistory.iupui.edu, Indianahauntedhouses.com, Alwaysrelevantdigital.com, Hauntedplaces.org, Atlasobscura.com, Wikipedia.orgOur theme music: “Danse Macabre - Busy Strings" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Support our show on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/trendylobotomypodcast Find us at FB/Instagram @TrendyLobotomyPod and at Twitter @TrendyPod as well as our blog trendylobotomypodcast.blogspot.com Support the show
Tori leads off with the tale of the Overlook Hotel, well actually the two hotels that were both the basis for the hotel made famous by Sotephen King. The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO was where Stephen King stayed at and had nightmares in. This hotel has so much history under one roof that picking out all the stories was tough. The Stanley has several tours and most of them tell at least one ghost story if not more. The Timberline Hotel in Mt. Hood, OR was the hotel that was used for the outdoor shots of the exterior of the Overlook Hotel. Unlike the Stanley, the Timberline's haunted history was scarce. Still a beautiful piece of American history and had a cooler back story than the Stanley. Krysti moves on to the Williamson Memorial Hospital in West Virginia otherwise known as the Old Hospital on College Hill. Shout out to John Cassity, his pictures were what peaked Krys's interest in this story. This hospital has a long history of odd goings on even before the hospital started getting decommissioned. The community around the hospital declined just like the mining did. Throughout the years, this place has been home to tours, ghost hunters, specials, and events. The stories run the gamut from ghostly nurses, horses in the elevator, strange lights, to battery problems in the xray room. Happy bday to Tori and the start of the bday episodes, completely including wine of course. Tori tells the story of Cheesman Park in Denver and it started as you guessed it, a cemetery. Mt. Prospect Cemetery was established after a claim jump started Denver. After many steps, all of which equal “You want ghosts? Because that's how you get ghosts!” the cemeteries resting souls have either been moved or remain beneath the public park to this day. Krysti covers McPike Mansion in Alton Illinois. Krysti covered this for Tori's bday because fangirl time…Troy Taylor. One of the most haunted houses in Alton, this is a destination for most ghost hunters. We discover that Malcom will not be visiting the haunted wine cellar and Krysti's favorite type of hauntings are here, kid ghosts. Happy Holidays to all! Since y'all will be hearing this the week of Christmas, we decided to give you some Christmas legends! Krysti brings us the story of Krampus in his anti-Santa glory. Nothing makes you want to be nice like a half man, half goat with a long tongue beating you with a stick if you are bad. In Bloomington Indiana they have had Krampus Rampage and Bazaar. Unfortunately we missed the boat on that, the day we recorded was the last time they held it. Tori covers Hans Trapp, the French scarecrow cannibal. Come to find out, was a real dude but the story was completely skewed as history tends to do. But at least the Black Knight sure has an interesting backstory. Gotta round it out with a legend from Iceland. Gryla the giantess and her 13 sons. Gryla listened to whispers about misbehaving children year round then collects them to make her stew. She also has the Yule Cat and his tendency to eat children that don't have new clothes. Last but not least we have the 13 Yule Lads. Each one seems to be more gross than the next. These 13 are creepy with extreme stalker tendencies. Don't worry, Tori doesn't even attempt their actual names. Hail, hail, the gang's all here! Chuck and Malcom join us for this episode! Tori starts with you guessed it, another cemetery. Bachelors Grove Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Cook County Illinois. 18 miles outside of Chicago and off of a closed turnpike, this is one of the most haunted spots in Cook County. This cemetery is home to many paranormal phenomena running the gamut from basketball size blue lights to the classic Hookman trope. Krysti covers the Ridges in Athens Ohio. On the current grounds of Ohio University, the Ridges was known as the Athens Lunatic Asylum and was built in the Kirkbride plan. This asylum opened in 1874 and operated until 1993. In it's heyday it was on 1000 acres and had 78 buildings. This was a huge employer of the city when it was open. The Ridges, the main building, is now owned by OU and is home to many things including the Kennedy Museum of Art. There are three cemeteries on the property with 1930 people in them. The state no longer takes care of the cemeteries but NAMI has stepped up to the plate to give these folks their names back. From shadow people, disembodied voices, strange lights, and other assorted paranormal happenings abound here. Btw, you can totally go putt putting on the grounds of the Ridges, be wary of the vultures though. Our Sources: patch.com, bachelorsgrove.com, many a podcast, Weird Ohio, neh.gov, atlasobscura.com, legendsofamerica.com, ohioexploration.com, collegeboundadvantage.com, woub.org, hauntedjourneys.com, Wikipedia.com, Spooky Spouses PodcastOur theme music: “Danse Macabre - Busy Strings" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Support our show on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/trendylobotomypodcast Find us at FB/Instagram @TrendyLobotomyPod and at Twitter @TrendyPod as well as our blog trendylobotomypodcast.blogspot.com Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/trendylobotomypodcast?fan_landing=true)
We start the episode explaining the altar of truth and our presents from Zach. Tori covers the Oregon Vortex and the weirdness contained therein. This is one of those mystery spots that are found around the country just waiting to take tourist's money. Can you say optical illusions? Next up we get a short history lesson about the Shanghai Tunnels in Portland and the current ghostly inhabitants. Press ganging, crimping, and shanghaiing was used to kidnap sailors to serve on long sea voyages against their wills. Tori was this many years old when she learned where the term “Shanghaiing” came from. Also #ghostkidsaredicks. Krysti continues on smartly with ghost stories! Krys got to go for the spook factor in honor of spooky season. The Ghost of Fiddlers Rock is a Tennessee ghost of renown and Krys tells his story. Moral of the story, don't piss off snakes. Several other tales stem from Fiddler's Rock. Last but not least we have the story of Amy of Lick Road. Several versions of the story exist. More tropes ahead. Surprise! This week Chase fills in for Hannah to discuss the legend of Bloody Mary. Ya know, the creepy lady in the mirror? We all played this "game" as children, but where did it come from? Trigger Warning: There are several stories involving suicide in this episode, listener caution is advised. We got another visitor this episode, one of our oldest friends and Patron Melel! Krysti opens up with Randolph County Infirmary formerly known as Randolph County Poor Asylum. This was another of the places set up by the local government to take care of those who could not take care of themselves. While these institutions seem to start with good intentions, they tend not end that way. Fires, suicides, hangings, and unknown numbers of deaths occurred in this location. And of course this is now the site of a haunted attraction. EVPs, doors slamming, and Krysti's favorite, ghost kids giggling. Tori had a story fail with the Josephus Wolf House and internet feuding about the real story of the house. So what does she always fall back on? You guessed it, more cemeteries. Lafayette Pioneer Cemetery in Yamhill County, with a story of a witch or two. Or maybe three? Weather changes, evps, people being grabbed, and apparently the cause of Lafayette being burned three times. Also a haunted winery? Canterbury Hill Cemetery (Sunset Pioneer Cemetery) in Tigard is next with it's shocking headstones. Kinder Cemetery and the resident George comes into play. To close it out Rock Point Cemetery in Gold Hill rounds out this round of cemeteries. One if the remaining spots in the abandoned town that is about 5 miles away from the Oregon Vortex, which a story for another day.Our Sources: hauntedrandolphcounty.com, fox59.com, bumpinthenight.net, asylumprojects.org, wagonpilot.com, Shadow Nation Podcast, oregonhauntedhouses.com, onlyinyourstate.com, frightfind.com, hauntedplaces.org, roadsidethoughts.com, greenlettucead.com, tigardlife.com, portlandmercury.com, ghosttowns.com Our theme music: “Danse Macabre - Busy Strings" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/trendylobotomypodcast?fan_landing=true)

This week we decided to cover an entire time period, because THE VICTORIANS. This seemingly bleak and dismal era is what inspired many of the stories we tell today. Fascinated by death, these people took the word "macabre" to a whole new level. Speaking of death, this period produced Jack the Ripper who terrorized the streets of London in 1888, becoming one of the world's most notorious serial killers. The mystery of his killing spree remains unsolved, but we look to break down the most likely suspects. We're back with another classic this week. Rapunzel is a fairy tale that has been passed down for centuries with each re-telling becoming more dark and twisted than the one before. The story of the long haired princess was inspired by Saint Barbara, a real life christian martyr who suffered endlessly at the hands of her own father. Unfortunately, the victim of our true crime story suffered a similar fate, possibly worse. Elisabeth Fritzl was kidnapped and held hostage for years by a man that the community praised as a hero. This is a story of a monster hiding in plain sight. This week's snack break is brought to you by Bluff Park Baked Goods. In this episode we discuss the inordinate amount of violence in relation to Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas, and the long list of deaths, murders, and accidents that are only a few of the violent and often deadly situations that have been taking place there at an alarming rate for quite some time. While it is the most populous military installation in the world, there has to be more to it than that. The Fort is thought by many throughout the Army to be a place where the safety of its soldiers is not guaranteed and is a "less than desirable" station. That said, there is ample evidence to support that issues of sexual and physical harassment, along with mental health are not taken seriously within the military as a whole, and it's clear that Fort Hood doesn't stand alone with an abundance of these issues. That said, why does this base in Texas lead the way in cases of suicides, domestic violence, terrorism, and deaths time and time again? Let's talk about it. Crimes committed at sea, especially in international waters, are incredibly challenging to investigate. There aren’t any mid-ocean police stations reserved for crimes while underway. If a crime is committed onboard, while in international waters between the departure port and its destination, the crew members are the first responders to the scene. That means evidence is collected by untrained hands, not skilled crime scene investigators. Sometimes, the scene isn’t protected or shut down in any way. Improperly handled evidence and a disturbed crime scene can obstruct or even invalidate an investigation, forever destroying key clues to solving a crime. This is the story of Hue Pham and Hue Tran and what happened on their Mother's Day cruise in 2005 that still has the family searching for answers in the deep waters of the Caribbean Sea. This week we discuss the Pilgrimage of Grace, a northern uprising that occurred during the reign of Henry VIII (control yourself Emily). Was it a peaceful protest? Was it a violent confrontation waiting to happen? Was it just a huge display of naivety vs political savviness? This week we discuss the times and crimes of allegedly transgendered Roman Emperor Elagabalus. Disclaimer - There is talk of transgenderism, genitalia, and a very very brief mention of rape. Whilst we know that the first two don't bother everyone, there are still those who would be uncomfortable with it so discretion is advised. This episode the Transmitters (Toby, Rudy, and Kristen) talk about Georgia! Well.. not all of Georgia... Just the "American Stonehenge". We try to figure out who built this odd granite structure in the 1980's. Is it a tourist stop? ..Or plans for the end of the world? Who really built this? Who was R.C. Christian? What are the 3 "c's"? Whats in the time capsule? Why is the "rules" written in 8 different languages? Whats the deal with the first rule? Why do we talk about China? Does Toby do a satanic gesture? Do the stones tell us to breed superior humans? Alex Jones stops by to talk with us? Is "Big Solstice" trying to take over the world? Toby doesn't know what "Common Sense"? One of the sickest serial killers the Transmitters (Toby, Kristen, Rudy, and Tyler) have talked about to date... and pay no attention to the crickets! I wouldn't recommend listening to this one with kids (or any of our shows for that matter). Lots of death and dismemberment in this one. How was Jeffrey's childhood? Will Kristen kill Toby one day? Was Jeffrey the class clown? Do kids normally play with animal bones? Jeffrey interviewed a Vice President? What is "Dahmer Smooth"? Rudy can't be a serial killer because he's not that smooth? How young was Jeffrey when he started having fantasies about killing? Did Jeffrey try to make zombies? Who was Hitchhiker Hikes? The cats won't stop molesting everyone? Does Jeffrey's story go full circle? Why does Jeffrey have a mannequin? How did Jeffrey lure men to his home and sedate them? Did Jeffrey keep pictures of his victims? Did he also keep some of their body parts? All this and more probably won't be answered as we... In this episode we touch on one of the most controversial conspiracy theories we've touched on to date. The Transmitters (Toby, Kristen, Rudy, and guest Lyra) talk about the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon September 11, 2001. They talk about the official time line of events, and some of the conspiracy theories people have come up with. What is the official story? Can jet fuel melt steel beams? Why did Building 7 fall? Where is the footage of the Pentagon? What really happened to the plane in Pennsylvania? Did the United States allow this attack to happen? Is the Illuminati behind this? Did the military call of planes to take down the ones that hit the World Trade Centers? All this and more probably won't be answered as we... It's only fitting to cover Area 51 on our 51st episode! The Transmitters (Kristen, Toby, and Rudy) discuss what Area 51 is, where its located, and debate on what exactly is done at this facility. How did we learn about Area 51? What is the official name of Area 51? What were some of the other names for it? Why was it originally called Area 51? Does Toby get embarrassed about co-workers listening to the podcast? Did someone try to sue the Government because of work done at Area 51? What was tested at there? Do they have the longest runways? Did Rudy do work for the New World Order? Were nuclear tests preformed in the area? How did they lure workers to work at Area 51? All this and more probably won't be answered as we... Can Pwyll & Rhiannon provide an heir to the Kingdom? Part 11 of the First Branch of the Mabinogion. Doubt begins to enter the minds of the people of Dyfed as their Lord and his Lady show no signs of producing an heir. The High Council of Druids put pressure on Pwyll to divorce his Fairy Bride and take a more 'fruitful' woman to his bed! This episode is also the 11th episode of the First Branch of the Mabinogi. Listener Feedback Chris St. Piran's Cross We had a great question from Chris in South Australia about Celtic tattoos, specifically about any that are Cornish in nature. As we say in the show, there aren't many original and ancient designs from Cornwall. There are a few books that may help with more general Celtic knotwork or art. We recommend having a look at:- Celtic Art: The Methods of Construction by George Bain Art of the Celts: From 700 B.C. to the Celtic Revival World of Art by Lloyd Laing Gaelic Tattoos: Top 50 Irish Gaelic Tattoo Ideas Book The Celtic Design Book - Aidan Meehan We suggested either using a variant of St. Piran's Cross or a form of the Piskie - the little pixie unique to Cornwall. We have images of both (and the Tintagel Labyrinth) below. Field Piskie by Josee Saurus The Tintagel Labyrinth from the Cornish Store Promo - Live Wire! Podcast Radio - Savvy Live Wire! Music - Sabbat Damh the Bard Sabbat Sabbat, the opening track on the album, is a rousing song about the eight seasonal festivals of the year (known as sabbats to Wiccans). Whether in Druidry or in Wicca, or in our distant past these times of the year are special to the Old Gods. Damh celebrates these great community celebrations with this superb song. Make sure you check out Damh's new album and where to get it on his website or on our Contributor Page. He has also made a video about his feelings for this song (as well as the others on the album) which you can find on YouTube. He is the founder and Head of the Anglesey Druid Order and studies with the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids. Badge of the A.D.O. In 2012 he was awarded the Mount Haemus Scholarship for original research in Druidism and related subjects. Kristoffer frequently presents workshops and lectures throughout the United Kingdom. This episode is also the ninth episode of the First Branch of the Mabinogi. Not from Nantle but from our own research.. The Court of Hefaydd Hen THE COURT OF HEFEYDD HEN (or Hyfaidd Hen) – unknown, but, according to the Mabinogion, certainly not in Dyfed. But according to some other traditions, Hefeydd was the first King of Dyfed. Gorsedd Arberth was his burial place and also the entrance to Annwn. Was this the enchanted castle in the third Branch? A hero called Hefeydd Hir is found in the 6th century epic poem Y Gododdin (composed by a Briton named Aneurin who lived in a land which is now part of Scotland). In the second Branch of the Mabinogion he appears as one of the Seven Knights, King Hefeydd of Dyfed who died in 892 etc... Hefeydd was a common name in Mediaeval Wales. The Kingdom of Gwawl fab Clud Map of Scotland showing the Wall It is said that the literal meaning of the name is “Wall Son Of Wealth”. “Gwawl”, according to the University of Wales Dictionary means: The Vallum (Roman wall) between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde - the Antonine Wall, not Hadrian’s Wall Man Light But his last name more than likely refers to the River Clyde in Scotland. Therefore he was one of the people of the Old North, that is to say they were Britons, like the Welsh. Alt Clud - now called Dumbarton Rock Their capital was Allt Clud – a huge rock on the further north bank of the River Clyde. [Now called Dumbarton (City of the Britons) Rock NS399745]. Pwyll meets a mysterious Lady In the first episode of the second half of Pwyll, Prince of Dyfed we find out that it has been three long and glorious years since Pwyll journeyed to Annwn and became firm friends with Annwn and his own kingdom is just beginning to shown signs of strain. It has been hot with fine weather for so long that the possibility of drought is becoming a real threat. Pwyll has not taken a Queen and produced an heir and the people fear that the land is suffering from his lack of fertility. Pwyll, however, has other things on his mind... This episode is also the 7th episode of the First Branch of the Mabinogi: Pwyll, Prince of Dyfed and the beginning of the second half of that Branch - the story of his encounter with Rhiannon. The Iron Age fort on Camp Hill to the south of the town of Narberth is the most commonly accepted location for the Gorsedd of Arberth. We have marked it in Green with our location on Bryn Caerau marked in Yellow to the North-East of Arberth. Pic: Google Earth We suspect that these twin peaks are the site of the actual Gorsedd as they are higher than Camp Hill, match with the descriptions of the topography given in the text and have an earlier Bronze Age archaeological presence known as Caerau Gaer and Llandewi Gaer. Arberth, the "Sea-Voice" & the Gorsedd The River we have called the Sea-Voice is the river Marlais that flows from the River Taf. The Welsh name comes from 'marw glais' which means 'dead bruise' and therefore stagnant water, so we can only assume that it has long since become polluted. Pwyll prepares to enter a battle to the death! In the last episode, Pwyll had started his battle training with Arawn's Knights, defended the Kingdom of Annwn from strange, Brutish invaders and learned a valuable lesson from Arawn's beautiful Queen. In this episode, after a year of preparation and waiting, he gathers his forces and travels to the Ford between the Worlds. There, he will meet with Hafgan the Summer-White, the King of the Land of Summer and face him in a duel to the death. Only one will walk away. Will Pwyll be able to meet up to Arawn's hopes and expectations? This episode is also the 5th episode of the First Branch of the Mabinogi and continues the story of Pwyll, the Prince of Dyfed. Under the title of Ancient Britain and the Atlantic Zone, the project is now in its fifth year and is exploring the possibility that the ancient language of Tartessian is possibly the earliest known Celtic language and that the Celts came to Europe from the West. We covered the Year 3 conference and again in our report about the possible origins of Welsh. We also report that there is some evidence that an inscription in the Tartessian language may well have been found in Newfoundland indicating that the Celts may have visited the other side of the Atlantic at least 4,000 years ago!
