Becoming a licensed therapist in our healthcare system is long grueling process filled with many sacrifices, and though it's looked upon as the “ETHICAL” way to be an effective therapist, there are some MAJOR issues which make our system broken to the point that licensed therapists are disempowered and unable serve the people in our society that need support in their mental health. In this Episode, Gabby and Amber share their Journeys through the educational system with the goal of becoming “licensed therapists” only to realize that in the end, they could do so much more outside this broken system, which leaves therapists “overworked” and “underappreciated” not to mention “under paid” for that matter. They dive into the different pillars this system is built on, and why they are crumbling, and tear down the notion that “License” means “Ethics” & how systematically flawed the DSM is. [1:43] Introduction to Amber, Clinical therapist, self-healer, chronic illness healer, Bad-Ass-Coach [4:55] Amber talks about why she decided NOT to become licensed despite having checked off ALL of the boxes to be fully licensed [7:44] Gabby explains why it is so important to always question the narrative and how trauma cycles and peoples bias's make it into the DSM and influence text books that have mass influence in our education system [13:04] Gabby and Amber discuss the unethical nature of having to give someone a diagnosis in order to be reimbursed and just how broken this system is [19:44] The false notion that a “License” means “Ethics” and how dangerous this assumption can be [24:49] The Crumbling of the system and paradigm shift happening in the age of Aquarius that we are in, and how the DSM is based on empirical research is based exclusively on white, heterosexual males [28:13] How women have been completely oppressed and essentially demonized by our mental health system and not so long ago were forced to undergo traumatic unethical medical practices [32:49] why Coaching gets such a bad reputation(on purpose) [45:45] Gabby and Amber talk about how many of the new modalities that insurance companies are rebranding as “therapy” are actually “coaching” modalities [48:29] The power of Pivoting and how being unregulated can be a very positive thing when you are willing to be self-aware, and willing to heal yourself so you can heal others [55:23] Amber talks about how she had to deal objections from her instructors, therapist friends, and family when she decided not to move forward with becoming a licensed therapist [1:01:01] You can actively practice both as a therapist and coach, and protect license and business [1:01:37] Amber's advice for anyone thinking about coaching and may be on the fence about pursuing the journey of being a coach This week's guest was Amber Gordon! The relationships we see around us from a young age have the ability to deeply affect our core beliefs about ourselves. It affects our attachment style, our personality, our way of being. Some of the most important work we can do is start to unpack the intergenerational narratives we've inherited and challenge them. We learn everything from what is modeled for us, especially in those first five years of life. We learn how to be human beings, how to interact with people, what's acceptable and what's not acceptable how to think about ourselves and how to think about ourselves in relationship to our environment. So when we start to really dive deep into the “why” behind those beliefs we hold, we can start to unpack that narrative and shift it to a place of high energy and vibe. In today's episode, I'm chatting to Amber Gordon, a trained marriage and family therapist turned coach. This is a special episode for me because I was a client of Amber's and she helped me shift the generational beliefs I held of being “not quite right” and uncover what was holding me back. Through working with Amber, I realized that being “weird” or “different” is actually what gives me the power to call in my highest self. In our discussion, Amber talks about the unconscious narratives that we hold in our bodies, how these are developed through the relationships around us and the methods she uses to help her clients break free of those beliefs. As Amber tells us, our energy is our most important asset. If we are sitting in a place of lack or focussing on what we don't have, we are in a place of low energy and that low energy attracts more of that low energy. If we want to feel good enough and confident and attract massive abundance or build a business, we need to ensure we're working from a place of high energy. And to do this, we need to challenge and shift those generational narratives that are informing us. We might still have the same thought but we have the power to shift how we feel about it and how we exist in relationship to it. And remember, just because you have this initial blueprint you've inherited that's not serving you now doesn't mean that it's your blueprint for life. You can change it. You can shift it. And that's where you'll find your highest self. Click this link to connect with Amber! According to 2019 statistics, only 4.2% of businesses that gross over $1 million per year are women-owned. And that's before accounting for the impact of the COVID19 pandemic. Of all the companies and entrepreneurs and corporations making 7 figures or more, only 4.2% are owned by women! We need to change that. We need to empower more women to step into this space of entrepreneurship and of leadership, so that we can make significant changes and impact on the world. But it all starts with really recognizing where we are now. Battling the mindsets and the imposter syndrome to really recognize our internal limitations, so that we can fully step into our power and move into these spaces comfortably. Every other Thursday at 5pm PST, me and the OM coaching team hosts a live coaching call for all of the amazing conscious leaders and entrepreneurs in our community to learn and grow. This episode is from a recent community call led by OM coach Amber Gordon, where Amber shares her story, experiences, and practices that helped her step into her power and growth - with fear, but still showing up anyway. This episode is really dedicated to the phrase I use over and over again with my clients and my community. When I'm asked, “What I do about imposter syndrome? What do you do? How do you get started?” Just. Do. The. Damn. Thing. Introduction to the community call workshop: Doing the Damn Thing [4:14] Addressing the “extras” that can take women away from doing the damn thing, [4:54] Amber shares her own struggles and experiences in discounting her perceptions [8:58] Visualizing yourself as who you want to be [10:13] Breaking out of the identity placed upon you by others [11:43] Rewriting your narrative and showing up authentically [13:50] Forgiving yourself for being a human being [16:23] Normalizing being normal, not being perfect all the time - and still showing up. This episode of Amory was SO FUN to record! Amber Gordon is a high-energy, catalytic coach who found the box of the her traditional Graduate level education to be just too small, and not able to honor the authetic inner truth of her clients. So, she pivoted to become a coach, which allows her to support (not pathologize) her clients following non-traditional paths like polyamory, BDSM, LGBTQ+, kink, etc. She does one-on-one coaching, and is starting a new group coaching program for female identifying people called Wildfire Collective! Link in her IG profile - @strikeignite.coaching If this episode stirs something inside - DM Amber or Megan to join a women's program - both 8 weeks long, and sure to catalyze you to step into your power and authentic self! Comparison is something that we're all familiar with as a source of anxiety or envy. We're told by self-help books, articles, and gurus to stop comparing ourselves to others to find happiness and fulfillment. But our inclination to compare is inevitable, and truly, comparison can be a useful tool when used as a catalyst instead of a trigger. So this week, I'm joined on the podcast by my good friend and co-coach Amber Gordon for a conversion all about reframing our perception of comparison. Like many of us, Amber had built her identity upon the external labels that she believed defined her. But after a years-long battle with chronic illness took away those labels, she had to re-examine all the relationships she held in life in order to create a new sense of self. In this episode, we discussed how to get clear on where we stand, how we relate to the things we're working through, and how to use conscious comparison as a tool to dive into our own growth. While comparison is certainly something that can put us into a negative spiral, we truly have the control to decide how we want to use this information and interpret our feelings, to be the best support of our highest self. From this episode, you'll rethink the role of comparison in your own life while recognizing this truth: you never have to be like anybody else. [1:37] Introduction to Amber Gordon, a Marriage and Family Therapist and my co-coach for the Ignite program [6:03] Amber's journey with chronic illness that led her to rebuild her identity [9:30] Formulating our sense of self with comparison and relationships [14:40] Using comparison as a catalyst [19:56] Auditing the big relationships in your life, and getting clear on yourself and where you stand [26:41] Working in alignment with your energy to still be high-performing, even when healing [38:08] Understanding the relationship with your trauma, mental illness, chronic illness, or any other blocks you are working through [42:02] A visualization exercise to address the things you're working through [46:10] Accepting and working with who you are, despite pushback from others [50:39] How living in her truth makes Amber feel like a light leader [53:40] Where to find more from Amber This week's guest was Amber Gordon!
