He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. 25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, 27 and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. 30 I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.Ephesians 2:1-10 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.Matthew 25:30-31 And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'31 “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Sermon Discussion Questions:What are the different ways in which Jesus Gives life? What is the difference between Jesus Raising Lazarus and someone being spiritually raised?Did God commit this power of giving life to Jesus? What are we to take away from this teaching on Jesus' power and authority?

We now come into chapter 5 of the Gospel of Mark. We will be reading and studying the first 6 verses.Dr. Mitchell brings out the fact that a dominate note in this gospel is Jesus casting out of demons. The Gospel of Mark seems to demonstrate the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ to cast out demons. He still has that authority to this day. By His resurrection and ascension and exaltation to the right hand of God, angels, authorities, and powers have been made subject to HIM.He is exalted far above all principality, power and might and dominion. Jesus is Lord of all.Dr. Mitchell warns about an evil device used today to invite demonic activity into one's life. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood.Let's turn, with Dr. Mitchell, on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast, to Mark 5:1-6.

Belonging and sealing: the authority and power of the Holy Spirit

Gospel Spice

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 30, 2025 41:31

In this episode of Gospel Spice, Stephanie Rousselle invites us to explore the theme of identity and belonging, centered on what it means to be “in Christ.” Building upon the previous episode on adoption (See Episode 409), we ponder how our sense of self is transformed and anchored by God's love, the work of Christ, and the sealing of the Holy Spirit. The Seal of the Holy Spirit: Marked as Belonging In Ephesians 1:13, Paul writes that believers are “sealed with the Holy Spirit.” Stephanie invites us to consider a seal as it was in ancient times—a stamp pressed into soft wax, leaving a permanent imprint. In this analogy, we are like the wax, transformed and marked by the very nature and authority of God Himself. This seal signifies both our identity—we are marked as God's own—and our security. Just as a sealed envelope is protected and identified by its seal, we are both set apart and protected through the Spirit. Satan may attempt to attack or tempt us, but he cannot invade what has been sealed by God. The Intimacy and Assurance of the Spirit The Holy Spirit is the real, tangible presence of God in us—a downpayment of our future inheritance with Him. Stephanie encourages us to let the Spirit guide and comfort us, reminding us of God's love, providing peace in hardship, and strengthening us with God's own power. The assurance that God delights in us isn't because of our greatness, but because of His extravagant love and the transformation He accomplishes within us. The Spirit teaches us not only of God's love for us, but enables us to truly love Him in return. Belonging and the Two Dimensions of the Gospel Paul describes our identity as involving both a vertical and horizontal dimension: our faith in Christ (vertical) and our love for one another (horizontal), forming a cross-shaped understanding of the gospel. In Christ, we belong not only to God, but also to one another as members of His body, the church. This new community is called out, sealed, and set apart for God's purposes. Seated with Christ: Rest and Purpose A powerful image throughout Ephesians is that we are “seated with Christ” (Ephesians 2:6). In the ancient temple, priests never sat because their work was unfinished. By contrast, Christ, having completed His redemptive work, sits at God's right hand. Astonishingly, we are invited to sit with Him—not striving for salvation, but resting in what He has accomplished. This gives us assurance: nothing can add or take away from our salvation. We are saved by grace, freed for good works—expressions of thanksgiving and calling, not requirements to earn favor. The “But God” Moment Paul paints the “before and after” of our lives: once alienated, separated, and without hope, “but God” intervened in mercy, bringing us near by the blood of Christ. Our past no longer defines us; our new status as beloved, adopted children of God does. Takeaway: Becoming Who You Are in Christ Paul encourages us to hunger for deeper intimacy with God and to rest in the truth that our core identity is found in Christ, sealed by the Spirit, and expressed in loving Him and others. Our calling and purpose flow from being secure in this identity. As Stephanie reminds us, nothing beats knowing Christ and growing daily into the fullness of who we are in Him. ----- IDENTITY IN THE BATTLE WORKBOOK ------ You have the option to go beyond listening to this series, and to participate actively. Gospel Spice exists to inspire our generation to delight in God. We do this through the podcast, online Bible studies, leadership trainings, and more. We want to serve Christ-followers who seek to live a life spiced with the gospel. We want to love God, because He first loved us. We want to experience the fullness of life with Him—and not be content with stale, boring, leftover faith. Jesus tells us that the most important thing is to love the Lord our God, so we take Him seriously. He adds that we are to love our neighbor as ourselves. Now, there are many ways to do that, but I have always personally felt deep compassion for victims of human trafficking – it is modern day slavery, and it revolts the heart of God. And so, they are our particular neighbors here at Gospel Spice. We want to play our part in raising awareness and then financially supporting those who fight this great evil.   Now we would love to invite you to join the team in one of three ways: 1, pray Gospel Spice forward – pray for our guests, our listeners and participants, and for us too! 2, play Gospel Spice forward by telling your friends about us, and by please leaving positive reviews and comments on your podcast listening app; and 3rd, PAY GospelSpice forward. Less than 1% of our listeners are supporting us financially. We need your help! Please pay Gospel Spice forward today. It can be a one-time donation, or a monthly one, for the amount of your choice. Your donation is fully tax-deductible in the US. Plus, once we cover our costs, a significant portion of your donation will be given back to Christian organizations that fight human trafficking, and that we vet thoroughly. Read OnlineThey were all amazed and said to one another, “What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region. Luke 4:36–37Jesus had just encountered the wrath of many in His hometown of Nazareth, so He left there and traveled about 30 miles to Capernaum, a town just north of the Sea of Galilee. This was to become His new home during His public ministry. The reaction He received in Capernaum was much different than that which He received in Nazareth. As He taught in the Synagogue in Capernaum, a man with a demon came to Him, Jesus rebuked the demon and cast it out, and the people were amazed. Word spread about Jesus quickly. After this, Jesus performed many other miracles, and the people continued to be in awe of Him.What was it that impressed the people of Capernaum? In part it was the “authority and power” with which Jesus spoke and acted. But it was not only this, since Jesus had done so also in Nazareth where the people failed to believe in Him. In Capernaum it wasn't that Jesus was different, it seems that the people were different. Jesus won over many hearts in Capernaum because the people were open to the gift of faith. In fact, when Jesus was preparing to leave from Capernaum, the people begged Him to stay. Though eventually Jesus would also encounter resistance from the people there, their initial reaction was one of faith.Do you want Jesus to act powerfully in your life? Do you want Him to act upon you with authority and power? Many people, from time to time, can feel as though their lives are somewhat out of control. They experience weakness, confusion, a lack of direction and the like. For that reason, true spiritual “authority and power” is very welcome. What sort of authority and power do you need Jesus to exert over your life today?Think of a small child who is frightened. When this happens, the child turns to a loving parent for comfort and security. The embrace of a parent immediately helps to dispel the fear and worry of the child. So it is with us. We must see Jesus as the source of calm in our lives. He is the only one Who is capable of ordering our lives, freeing us from the attacks of the evil one, bringing peace and calm to our disordered emotions and clarity to our questions and doubts. But this will only be possible if we are open. His power never changes, but it can only enter our lives when we change and when we recognize our weakness and our need for Him to take control.Reflect, today, upon the infinite spiritual authority and power of our Lord. It is a power beyond anything else we could imagine. He wants to exercise this authority in your life out of love. What is hindering Him from taking greater control of your life? What sin or temptation does Jesus want to rebuke in your life? From what oppression does He want to set you free? Reflect upon yourself being a member of the town of Capernaum who fully welcomes Jesus, is amazed at Him and desires Him in your life. His working in your life depends upon you and your response to Him. Call on Him and let Him in.My most powerful Lord, You and You alone are able to take authority over my life and bring order and peace. Please remove any doubt and stubbornness from my heart so that I can open myself to You and Your grace. Take authority of my life, dear Lord, and lead me into Your most holy will. In our text today we look another form of hostility encountered by those who follow Christ – the demonic. This is not a comfortable topic for us, especially in a post-enlightenment culture where empiricism is the only excepted mode of truth. We have trouble with these "unseen" realities. The demonic is also scary and so we are tempted to skip over it.

Jesus said, "I give you authority." When he went to heaven, he transferred his authority to us. It is similar to how, on earth, we can have authority through a power of attorney over someone. Jesus gave us his power of attorney over our bodies, health, finances and life.   We ask other people often to pray for us because we feel they are better at praying than we are, but the truth is you don't know how they are praying, if they are praying or if they forgot to pray for you.   You don't want your health in someone else's responsibility. You cannot leave all the prayers for your healing up to another person. You truly don't know how invested they are in praying for you. Besides, the Bible says I give you authority. It means you have more authority over your situation than another person. You need to pray, war and fight for your healing. The Christian life can be exhausting at times. Serving God is fulfilling, but it takes a toll on us when we begin to lean on our own strength. But God is faithful in showing us our limitations so that He can display His power. Unfortunately, the only way we can see it is often when we are pushed to the end of ourselves. As He faithfully provides storms to get our attention, we should not rush to pray for relief. Instead, we should listen for the voice of the one who allowed it in the first place.

Throughout this episode, Katie and Pastor David Dwight engage in a candid conversation, exploring the nuances and distinctions between authority, something that is given, and power, which is often taken. They discuss the profound impact these concepts have on our lives and society, referencing Biblical texts such as Matthew 28 the Great Commission to illustrate the spiritual and practical implications. They also ponder the broader societal shifts regarding trust and authority, touching upon historical moments like the Vietnam War and its aftermath on American trust in government. This episode not only seeks to understand the Biblical perspective but also connects these age-old concepts to contemporary issues like leadership, trust, and societal participation. The conversation is enriched with personal insights and reflections on leadership and integrity, making this episode a compelling blend of theological discussion and practical wisdom. They were all amazed and said to one another, “What is there about his word? Call on Him and let Him in. My most powerful Lord, You and You alone are able to take authority over my life and bring order and peace. Please remove any doubt and stubbornness from my heart so that I can open myself to You and Your grace. Take authority of my life, dear Lord, and lead me into Your most holy will.
