Ralph welcomes J.B. Branch (Public Citizen's Big Tech accountability advocate) to discuss some of the sectors that Big Tech is disrupting with artificial intelligence. Then, Steve, David, and Hannah speak to Russell Mokhiber about the latest issue of the Capitol Hill Citizen. Finally, Ralph speaks on the legacy of the late Rev. Jesse Jackson.J.B. Branch is the Big Tech accountability advocate for Public Citizen's Congress Watch division. He leads Public Citizen's advocacy efforts on artificial intelligence accountability, consumer data and privacy rights, tech product safety, platform oversight, and child online safety protections. What's happening is these AI companies are taking a page out of the playbook of the social media days. When social media was brand new, they were trying to say that this technology is going to lead to people being more connected, it's going to lead to efficiencies, it's going to lead to overall positives. And in fact, there were times where you had big tech CEOs who were saying that a lot of this money was going to trickle down. And you look down, and you look up, and I'm not any richer because Facebook stock is soaring or Microsoft's is soaring. What we're really seeing is the same thing that's happened with these large tech companies—which is that they promised the world, they offer back very little, and in fact, what they offer up is a series of harms.JB BranchCongress has been really bought into AI. They're buying into this idea that it's a race for the world between us and China. So you have some congressional folks who believe that this is a race against China and that we need to harness this weapon. And then you have a lot of corporate money from these AI companies…They're dumping a lot of money into congressional races, to ensure that they're propping up candidates who align with this deregulatory scheme.JB BranchRussell Mokhiber is editor of the Corporate Crime Reporter and the Capitol Hill Citizen. He is also founder of singlepayeraction.org, and editor of the website Morgan County USA.I see [the Capitol Hill Citizen] philosophy along a couple lines. One is that it's not left right, it's top down. We consider both political parties corrupt to the core, but there's a rising tide of activism against both parties, against the institutional parties. And so, for example, in the current issue, we bristle against those who are what we call “negativo”. We're very “positivo”. So while we're living in very difficult times, there's a rising tide of activism challenging members of Congress, both current members in Congress as citizen activists and also as candidates…And so what we're seeing is this up-down resurgence from the bottom—populists of all stripes rising up against the technocratic billionaires who've brought us to this state.Russell Mokhiber[Jesse Jackson] was an advocate of non-violence, of self-reliance. And the amazing thing about him is how he appeared everywhere. I mean there was nothing remote about Jesse Jackson. He appeared everywhere. If the farmers were being driven into bankruptcy by agribusiness, he was there. If there need to be prisoners released in foreign countries, he was there… The thing that most people didn't realize is how much personal pressure he was under by his opponents. In those days, challenging certain conditions that we don't even know about now because of Jesse and other civil rights leaders' works, really upset the power structure. And they didn't take it lying down. So all these places he went to, he was very much under great pressure.Ralph NaderNews 2/20/26* Our top stories this week concern the continuing fallout from the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. First, the Columbus Dispatch reports Republican Senator Jon Husted of Ohio accepted more than $100,000 from Epstein associate Les Wexner. Husted's opponent in his reelection campaign, former Ohio Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, blasted Husted for accepting this money and implied that Wexner's donations pushed Husted to initially vote against releasing the Epstein files. In damage control mode, the Husted campaign announced they would donate Wexner's campaign contributions to charity. Wexner himself appeared in front of the House Oversight committee this week. Wexner denied any wrongdoing, claiming that Epstein “conned” him and called him a “clever, diabolical … master manipulator.” Democrats on the committee were skeptical, with Congressman Robert Garcia stating “There is no single person that was more involved with providing Jeffrey Epstein with the financial support to commit his crimes than Les Wexner,” per the Hill.* In related news, the New York Times reports Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, has been arrested for misconduct stemming from his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Specifically, he stands accused of passing along confidential information to Epstein while the disgraced former prince served as a British trade envoy. His brother, King Charles III is quoted saying he supports a “full, fair and proper process” to investigate these claims. The Times notes the striking disparity in the official response from law enforcement in the U.K. versus the U.S., writing, “The British authorities have moved aggressively to investigate the possibility of crimes emerging from the three million pages of correspondence with Mr. Epstein… police in the United States have not.”* Meanwhile in Los Angeles, prominent entertainment executive and sports agent Casey Wasserman has drawn fire from many LA politicians, including City Controller Kenneth Mejia, L.A. County Supervisor Lindsay Horvath, City Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez and fellow Councilmember and mayoral candidate Nithya Raman over his ties to Epstein lieutenant Ghislane Maxwell, as revealed in the latest tranche of files. High-profile clients of Wasserman's agency immediately began to abandon the firm. High profile deserters include pop star Chappell Roan and Olympic gold medalist Abby Wambach. Wasserman announced he would sell the agency shortly thereafter. However, Wasserman still chairs the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics Committee. This week, LA Mayor Karen Bass weighed in to call Wasserman's behavior “abhorrent” and say that while she cannot fire him, it is her opinion that he should step down. Astonishingly, the LA28 board announced after a review of Wasserman's conduct that he should remain on as committee chair. This from LA Magazine.* Speaking of local boards, this week New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the appointment of six new members of the Rent Guidelines Board, including a new Chair. With these six appointments, comprising two-thirds of the total board, Mamdani is poised to deliver on one of his key campaign promises – a rent freeze for tenants in rent-stabilized apartments. These appointees range from experienced civil servants to academics to union organizers, among others. This is a major victory for Mamdani, and comes at a key moment when other items on his governing agenda are being challenged by budgetary constraints due to long-term mismanagement of the city's finances.* Another rent-related story comes to us from Minnesota. CBS reports the tenants union Twin Cities Tenants, along with five labor unions totaling over 25,000 workers, are calling for a statewide rent strike to pressure lawmakers to enact an eviction moratorium. This comes in the context of Operation Metro Surge, the federal government's sprawling immigration enforcement action which resulted in the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. As this piece notes, many residents of the Twin Cities stayed home from work during the operation, out of fear of being detained, resulting in many tenants being short on rent ahead of March 1st. According to an analysis by the University of Minnesota renters in the state have racked up between $27 and $51 million in rent debt since the onset of Metro Surge. This in addition to the average statewide rent debt of $44.6 million in any two-month period.* Turning to Gaza-related news, this week saw major updates in the legal drama of Palestine Action in Britain. On February 13th, AP reported that the country's High Court ruled the government acted unlawfully by outlawing Palestine Action and deeming it a terrorist organization. The Judges said that Palestine Action's activities did not meet the “level, scale and persistence” that would justify a legal proscription. However, the court allowed the government to keep the ban in place pending the government's appeal. The group was banned last June after breaking into a Royal Air Force base to protest the slaughter in Gaza. Despite this ruling in the group's favor, which came on the heels of a ruling dismissing charges against six Palestine Action activists, the BBC reports those activists will be retried by the government over their alleged role in causing damage to an Elbit Systems facility near Bristol. Charges against 18 other defendants accused of participating in the break-in will be dropped.* Meanwhile, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and one of the Catholic Church's highest officials, was asked to comment on President Trump's proposed Board of Peace, the international body intended to oversee the governance and reconstruction of Gaza. Pizzaballa replied “What do I think of the Board of Peace? I think it is a colonialist operation: others deciding for the Palestinians.” The Patriarch added “They asked us to enter. I've never had a billion (dollars),” referring to the $1 billion price for a permanent board seat, but “above all, this is not the Church's task: It is the sacraments, the dignity of the person.” This from OSV News. Pizzaballa has long sought self-determination for the Palestinians alongside peace in the region, even putting his own life on the line for that cause. Just after the October 7th Hamas attacks, Pizzaballa offered to exchange himself for the Israeli hostages in Hamas custody.* And in East Asia, NBC reports ousted South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been found guilty of insurrection over his failed self-coup plot, which involved storming parliament and imposing martial law. The South Korean high court stopped short of accepting the prosecution's request for the death penalty – which they justified using the case law derived from the execution of King Charles Stuart of England in 1649 – and instead sentenced Yoon to life in prison. Decrying the verdict, Yoon's lawyers called the trial “nothing more than a mere formality to reach a predetermined conclusion.” Yoon has the right to appeal the ruling. Given the failure of American institutions to check the creeping authoritarianism in our political system, it is awe-inspiring to see it happen in a country that has struggled with authoritarian rule in its much more recent past.* Turning back to domestic news, Mike Selig, the chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) posted a strange video this week, claiming that “American prediction markets have been hit with an onslaught of state-led litigation,” and announcing that the CFTC will launch a legal campaign to block states from regulating sites like Polymarket and Kalshi by asserting that such regulation is the sole purview of the Commission. In the video, Selig argues that these sites “provide useful functions for society by allowing everyday Americans to hedge commercial risks, like increases in temperature and energy price spikes…[and] serve as an important check on our news media and our information streams.” A number of states have taken action to regulate prediction markets, including Nevada, along with Arizona, Michigan, New York and Illinois, to name just a few. One powerful constituency pushing for state-level regulation of prediction markets is the traditional gambling industry. Adam Greenblatt, CEO of sportsbook BetMGM, thundered in a recent interview “They pay no state taxes, there are no consumer protections, there are no penalties for underage play.” This from Axios.* Finally, we pay tribute to activist, civil rights leader, and political forefather of modern multiracial progressive politics, the Reverend Jesse Jackson. Jackson, who passed away this week at age 84, was a protégé of Martin Luther King and ran groundbreaking presidential campaigns in the 1980s assembling the “Rainbow Coalition,” which sought civil rights for racial and ethnic minorities and the LGBT community alongside a sweeping anti-poverty agenda. In the 1990s, Jackson was elected Shadow Delegate and then Shadow Senator for the District of Columbia. In the 21st century, Jackson took on an elder statesman role in progressive circles, continuing to lead the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition and attending major protest events – including the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests and 2024 pro-Palestine encampments – even after his Parkinson's diagnosis in 2017 and multiple COVID-related hospitalizations. Since his passing, Jackson has been eulogized by a host of prominent political figures, including Donald Trump, Curtis Sliwa, Bernie Sanders, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, the Clintons, Reverends William J. Barber and Al Sharpton, the descendents of Martin Luther King, longtime Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa among many others. Like Ralph Nader, Jackson remained a leading light of the American Left during its lowest ebb in modern history. He followed his own iconic exhortation to “keep hope alive.” The least we can do is to carry on this legacy. This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. Swamiji explains King Parikshit's question: “If God is impartial, why does He seem to favor the devatas and oppose the daityas?” Shukadev Ji clarifies that the Lord is never biased — He only bestows grace. Even when He destroys demons, they receive liberation by His touch. To illustrate, Swamiji narrates the story of Shishupal, who harbored deep hatred for Krishna. At the Rajasuya Yagya, when Yudhishthir honored Krishna with Agra Puja, Shishupal hurled abuses repeatedly. Krishna, having promised forgiveness up to 100 offenses, patiently endured. But when Shishupal crossed the limit, Krishna released His Sudarshan Chakra and severed his head. Astonishingly, Shishupal's soul merged into Krishna, attaining liberation. Swamiji emphasizes the profound truth: however one fixes the mind on God — in love, anger, or even hatred — the soul is purified and uplifted. Just as the philosopher's stone turns iron into gold regardless of how it touches, Krishna's grace transforms all who connect with Him. This part highlights the untold depth of divine mercy: Shree Krishna's grace is so boundless that even sinners and enemies, when connected to Him, can attain liberation. About Swami Mukundananda: Swami Mukundananda is a renowned spiritual leader, Vedic scholar, Bhakti saint, best‑selling author, and an international authority on the subject of mind management. He is the founder of the unique yogic system called JKYog. Swamiji holds distinguished degrees in Engineering and Management from IIT and IIM. Having taken the renounced order of life (sanyas), he is the senior disciple of Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj, and has been sharing Vedic wisdom across the globe for decades.
Astonishingly, we managed not to bring up Epstein today. Instead, we focused on the inexorable passage of time and how everything you thought was new and cool is actually old. Then again, all that old stuff is being remade, so you're still correct. It's a very positive show today. Thank god.Topics:AI vs. jobsEnglish monarchyWuthering HeightsBoys of '80Winter OlympicsWhat's on TVSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

When the Christians in Jerusalem were scattered by persecution, Philip went to Samaria and “proclaimed to them the Christ.” Astonishingly, many of the Samaritans believed and were baptized. When they received the Holy Spirit, even the most elite among them recognized the presence of a superior power to any other they had known before.
The Torah in Parashat Vaera traces the lineage of Moshe Rabbenu, informing us that he was son of Amram and Yochebed. Amram was a grandson of Yakaob Abinu's third son, Levi – specifically, he was the son of Levi's son, Kehat. Astonishingly, the Torah relates, Yochebed was Amram's aunt – she was the daughter of Levi, the sister of Kehat. The commentaries explain that Yochebed and Kehat had different mothers, and thus they were half-siblings. As such, the marriage between Amram and Yochebed was not forbidden by the Noachide laws, which apply to all mankind. These laws forbid marrying one's parent's full sister, but not a parent's half-sister. This union would, however, be proscribed by the Torah given to Beneh Yisrael. It turns out, then, that Moshe – the greatest leader and prophet in our nation's history, who brought us the Torah – was the product of a marriage that Torah law forbids. Moshe is not the only great leader with less-than-pristine origins. The Davidic line, which began with David and Shlomo and will – we pray very soon – culminate with Mashiah, also has its origins in problematic relationships. David descended from Peretz – the product of the relationship between Yehuda and his daughter-in-law, Tamar. David's great-grandmother was Rut, a convert from the nation of Moab, and although it was ultimately concluded that this marriage was permissible, there was considerable controversy as to whether a man may marry a woman from Moab. And the founder of the nation of Moab, Rut's ancestor, was conceived when Lot's daughter gave her father wine and had a relationship with him, thinking they this was needed in order to maintain the earth's population. Rav Menahem Recanti (Italy, 1223-1290) offers an explanation for this phenomenon, for why the great leaders emerged from less-than-ideal origins. The Satan, he writes, is always seeking to sabotage the rise of these righteous figures, to block these holy souls from descending into the world. Moshe brought us the Torah, which is the "antidote" to the Yeser Ha'ra (evil inclination), the greatest weapon we have in our struggle to overcome the Satan's efforts to lure us away from the service of G-d. And the Gemara teaches that when Mashiah arrives, he will destroy the Satan so it could no longer hurt the Jewish People. Therefore, the Satan will do everything in its power to obstruct the transmission of Torah, and to prevent the arrival of Mashiah. For this reason, Hashem arranged that Moshe and David would be produced from unions that the Satan would never bother to disrupt. The Satan welcomes problematic relationships such as those of Lot and his daughters, Yehuda and Tamar, and Amram and Yochebed. He would never try to interfere with them, because this is precisely what he wants – relationships that are from the Torah's ideal marriage. Moshe and David needed to be produced this way for the purpose of avoiding the Satan's interference. This reminds us never to be discouraged by the challenges that we face in the pursuit of greatness. Whenever we try to achieve something significant, we are going to confront obstacles. Whether it's in the process of finding a spouse and raising a family, the process of learning Torah and spiritual growth, starting a new organization or project – the Satan is always going to try to interfere. Rather than be surprised and discouraged by the problems that arise, we should expect them, stay strong, and proceed with confidence, trusting that Hashem is always helping us in our efforts to defeat the Satan and achieve to the very best of our ability.
Welcome to the first new music show of 2026 – and thanks to Giulio aka Parcae for his great selections last week! We have a certain amount of catchup from last year, but we also have a surprisingly large amount of new music already, either released this week or last, or forthcoming. LISTEN AGAIN in a new year. Stream on demand from fbi.radio or podcast here. hidden_attachment – sorry this was just something i had to do [ky/hidden_attachment Bandcamp] hidden_attachment – in moncton i spent all my money on pinball and beer [ky/hidden_attachment Bandcamp] In November I played a track from Ky Brooks, the Montreal artist who recorded an album in 2023 called Power Is The Pharmacy for Constellation under the name Ky. They appear under various aliases, the most current of which is hidden_attachment, and they were previously known for making noise-punk with Lungbutter and freeform experimental stuff with Nag, among many others. The new hidden_attachment release is an EP described as “a tiny horrible opera”, which seems misleading – horrible is a matter of opinion, “opera” perhaps less so, but this is a small epic of practically ever genre other than opera. Jangling indie rock, electro-pop, bedroom drum’n’bass, bedroom punk, experimental ambient pop… ish. It’s weird & fun! Silvia Tarozzi – Lucciole [Unseen Worlds/Bandcamp] Silvia Tarozzi – Le ossessioni [Unseen Worlds/Bandcamp] When US label Unseen Worlds introduced us to Italian violinist/singer/composer and more Silvia Tarozzi, it was her first album Mi specchio e rifletto, an album that reflects her broad musical experience, from working with groundbreaking minimalist electronic composer Eliane Radigue to contemporary music with Ensemble Dedalus, to the folk music of her local region, improvisation, and playful studio experimentation. There was more than a hint of Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Then in 2022, Tarozzi released another extraordinary work, Canti di guerra, di lavoro e d’amore (“Songs of war, work and love”), with the cellist Deborah Walker, presenting a collection of music inspired by folk songs from rural Emilia which came from working class women involved with the partisan resistance in World War II, including songs sung by choirs of female rice field workers – music that the pair had grown up with. In April 2025, some of us were incredibly lucky, in Sydney and I think Melbourne, to witness Tarozzi & Walker performing these songs together, with just their instruments and voices – one of those occasions when musicianship seems like magic. So there’s a lot of anticipation with this new solo album from Tarozzi – or there would be, except that Lucciole appeared seemingly out of nowhere, available digitally on Bandcamp on December 12th. We’ll have to wait for April this year for the LP and CD, but the whole album’s there if you’re willing to stump up $10USD. Once again this is a wonderful tapestry of an album, with brass ensemble arrangements that set it somewhere between classical & folk music, along with synths, field recordings and turntables bringing modern twists. Her voice is lovely and some of the songwriting evokes the baroque pop of Sufjan Stevens in the best way. Winged Wheel – I See Poseurs Every Day [12XU/Bandcamp] Winged Wheel – Speed Table [12XU/Bandcamp] A US experimental rock supergroup, Winged Wheel began as a filesharing process between various musicians including violist Whitney Johnson aka Matchess, resulting in the 2022 debut album No Island. But for their new album Desert So Green, the band (expanded further to include, among others, Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley) had toured extensively, and headed into the studio together. The result is an album with psych-kraut-rock intensity and rhythmic drive, blurts of postpunk harshness, shards of viola, and vocals at times. It’s a real surprise, and really worth digging into. Èlg & la Chimie – La ville cachée [Murailles Music/Bandcamp] I don’t speak much French, not well anyway, but there’s just scads of great music from France – and francophone artists from Belgium, Switzerland and Canada, not to mention other former colonies – and you know I’m happy to play music in any languages as much as instrumental music. But understanding the pure breadth of francophone music is still challenging, so I’m happy when French artists fall into my lap. The entity known as Èlg is Laurent Gérard, and he’s been involved in experimental rock, sound-stuff, weird electronic etc for a good couple of decades. La chimie (chemistry) was a project of his in 2013, made up of weird electronics and loops – but now it’s also his band, in which he plays amplified guitalele (ukulele/guitar hybrid) and keyboards, with Marie Nachury on bass, electroncis and percussion, and Johann Mazé on drums and drum triggers. All three also sing, and they make a righteous noise, sometimes starting off as normal-sounding songs until something super-weird happens; in particular, often magnificent grooves on booming, clattering drum kit, and thumping bass. No two tracks are anything like each other, but there’s a through-line of unchained inspiration. Truly something else. JJJJJerome Ellis – Evensong, part 3 (for and after Jessica Valoris) [Shelter Press/Bandcamp] This wonderful album came out in November, but I didn’t properly get to it until too late to include it last year. JJJJJerome Ellis is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, academic, cross-media artist and more; they are of Grenadian-Jamaican-American heritage, and they’re a disabled person with a stutter – something that they’ve ingrained in their practice, including in the spelling of their first name. This album, Vesper Sparrow, draws from Black American and Caribbean culture as well as pop and experimental music, while being placed primarily in a composed jazz context. Most of the tracks are written for, and sometimes feature, fellow artists, poets and theorists. Alongside granular processing and sampling, Ellis’s stutter features and becomes a structural part of the music – but whatever the theoretical basis, this is beautiful and incredibly creative music. Toni Geitani – Ya Sah [Toni Geitani Bandcamp] Toni Geitani – Wasla [Toni Geitani Bandcamp] Originally trained in filmmaking, Lebanese musician Toni Geitani has since gained a Masters in live electronics in Amsterdam, where he is based now. His Masters thesis is titled “Sampling as a Political Medium”, which sounds fascinating. In his music, he melds Arabic vocals with classical instrumentation and experimental electronic production – the three preview tracks from his forthcoming album Wahj are stunning. “Wahj” (وهج) means “radiance”, and Geitani invites us to look through the collapse we see around, and seek that light. Obelisk – Salty Lemon Air [Geometric Corruption/Bandcamp] FBi’s own Ryan O’Rourke, presenter of Mithril for all things heavy & experimental, also makes music as Obelisk. It’s heavy and experimental for sure, but very electronic, very deconstructed club with aspects of breakcore, groaning distorted bass, trance keyboards and glitch. Obviously it’s awesome. Kloke – Silk [Subtle Audio/Bandcamp] Huuuuge jungle/drumfunk/drum’n’bass compilation incoming! Limerick, Ireland label Subtle Audio put out a series of great 2 or 3CD compilations in the mid-’00s with early drumfunk and jungle-inclined drum’n’bass – at the time it felt like the best source of really great beat production around. Many years later, here’s another 3CD set: Our Atmosphere has 2CDs of original tracks and tracks taken from label releases in a broadly “atmospheric” jungle, drumfunk and drum’n’bass, with a huge list of great producers, plus a DJ mix from label head Code on the 3rd disc. Oh – and the CDs arrived in the mail just as we hit the new year, but the digital version (without the 3rd disc) won’t be available until Feb 6th, so this is a sorta-kinda exclusive of Naarm’s own Kloke, one of many highlights here. Aftawerks & Earl Grey – Swingfunc Jungle [Earl Grey Bandcamp] Nathan Firman aka Aftawerks has been plying his trade in funky acid, IDM & jungle for over a decade, and Jim Earl Grey released an EP of his on his Hyperchamber Music label way back in 2013. I’m a pretty big fan of Earl Grey (in fact I first heard his stuff on those Subtle Audio comps back in the day!) and this collaboration between the two is just mad shit in the best way. Homemade Weapons – Leviathan (HW Remix) [Weaponist/Bandcamp] Seattle’s Homemade Weapons has his own particular take on the minimal/tribal drum’n’bass championed by Samurai Records, and as well as releasing on that label (and others) he runs his own label, Weaponist. The latest label release is the Bumura EP from the artist himself, with two new tracks and two remixes he’s made of tracks that were originally collabs – tonight’s cut was originally made with Sacramento’s Red Army. I do appreciate the way that elements of jungle are dropped into the very minimal d’n’b feel. BMA – Middle Age REFLEKT [Industrial Coast/Bandcamp] Moa Pillar – Fight Them Back [Industrial Coast/Bandcamp] The Industrial Coast label is based in Middlesborough, about an hour’s drive south of Newcastle, so fairly grim-up-north territory (I actually lovely Newcastle when I played there last year). The label is pretty dedicated to the cassette as a format, and generally most of the music on Bandcamp is unavailable digitally without the physical objects (set at £999) – but they do do retrospective compilations, and open up other releases briefly at times. So Deconstructed Reconstructed Retrospective is a double-compilation, in that it collects tracks from the labels Deconstructed/Reconstructed series of compilations in which industrial & experimental artists cover or remix artists such as Crass or music related to movements like anarcho-punk or Rock Against Racism. With 50 tracks, it covers plenty of ground. Sometimes you can immediately tell who the subject is, sometimes you have to try and look it up, and artists appear under various guises too – such as Iceman Junglist Kru (lo-fi industrial junglism), half of whom is also Stonecirclesampler (arcane ambient weirdness) aka Liquid DnB-like Ambient Grime 2… Unfortunately it’s long enough after it went up that it’s now priced at £999, but you can still stream the tracks. Tonight, US drum’n’bass producer BMA takes on hardcore punk originals Minor Threat, while London-based Russian deconstructed trance guy Moa Pillar does a tribute to Linton Kwesi Johnson. Travis Cook – fight_clown [Travis Cook Bandcamp] Adelaide’s Travis Cook, ex-Collarbones, continues releasing a track a week on his Bandcamp. This one’s all stuttery vocal samples and a smattering of beats. John Wall – Iconvt [John Wall Bandcamp] The ineffable John Wall stands somewhere between glitch & computer music, musique concrète, plunderphonics, and free jazz. Astonishingly, he didn’t start making music until he was 40 (in 1990). He’s worked with the cream of UK free jazz, and I’ve also featured a fair bit of his work with spoken word poet Alex Rodgers – here’s an example. He recently revisited his 1999 Constructions I-IV, which combined samples from live improvisers with samples of modern classical compositions, in order to remove the deliberate glitch-sound, which he now finds ugly (although I’m not the only one who likes that sound!) But now he’s put a single new track called “Iconvt“, which sounds like a command-line tool (iconv in Linux is a command that converts a string to a different character encoding). The source sounds here are not obviously revealed – it sounds mostly electronic; there are some fairly inscrutable quotes in the description, plus a reference to fellow avant-gardist Sunik Kim. But the music is some of the least-inscrutable stuff Wall has done, with rumbling bass, quite a bit of melody, and a fair bit of glitch, all things considered! Low Flung – Niksen [Low Flung Bandcamp] Eora/Sydney musician Danny Wild has been Low Flung for a long while now, and tends to lean more ambient than beat-driven. On his last release from 2025, Type-D we find him in a contemplative mood, but also in a dub techno mode – the first track has a super slow tempo with percussive chatter around the edges, but the other two tracks are faster but no less dubby. SAWT – Phase Collapse [Beacon Sound/Bandcamp] T. Gowdy – 00L00 [Beacon Sound/Bandcamp] Excellent Portland, Oregon label Beacon Sound enlists many brilliant friends to contribute to their important new compilation Gaza is the Moral Compass, benefiting on-the-ground mutual aid groups in Gaza. The organisers point out that Israel has violated the so-called ceasefire hundreds of times; Israel’s fascist government is joined by Donald Trumps’ fascist governmnent in trying to remake the Middle East while Australia’s Labor governments are falling over themselves to protect the interests of a foreign state, at least partially in the name of “Jewish safety” which as a Jew I categorically reject. Cultural practice is not neutral, the organisers remind us, and that includes what art/music/culture you consume and how you do so. So here we have many artists associated with the Constellation label, artists originally from Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq and Egypt, and indeed Japan – the quality is incredibly high throughout, and all the music is exclusive to the comp (for now). SAWT is Kamel Badarneh, based in Brussels, whose contribution is a nice piece of throbbing techno, while Constellation’s T. Gowdy does his shimmering sample-shifting thing but with an Arabic-sounding sound source. Filippo Ansaldi & Simone Sims Longo – +1 [Umor Rex/Bandcamp] Filippo Ansaldi & Simone Sims Longo – Illusione [Umor Rex/Bandcamp] A few years ago, Italian musician Simone Sims Longo released a brilliant electro-acoustic album called Paesaggi integrati (integrated landscapes) on the great Dutch label Esc.rec – still one of my favourites on the label. There, he processed the sounds of various acoustic instruments; on Solo Suono, Sims Longo is working with saxophonist Filippo Ansaldi, and it’s his instrument that he’s processing. At times we’re hearing the saxophone solo, or multi-tracking into beautiful chordal movement; elsewhere the instrument is splintered and looped. The saxophone is an instrument uniquely suited to experimental approaches, and Ansaldi and Sims Longo here go deep into some of its sonic possibilities. Dual Dialect – Conglomerate III – Meme-leak Mosaic [4000 Records/Bandcamp] Speaking of sax, Meanjin/Brisbane’s Dual Dialect feature Andrew Garton of Ghostwoods on “mutant saxophone” alongside Andrew Foley of Grids/Units/Planes, YEARNS etc, creating disintegrated beats and abstract pads according to their very accurate Instagram bio. But there’s some surprisingly blissful stuff here too – a kind of jazz fusion that hints at downtempo stuff from the ’90s, Jon Hassell’s fourth world work in the ’80s, and post-’00s glitchy electronics. Recommended. Aroma – After The Rain [Urban Trout Records/Bandcamp] And we finish tonight with a collaboration by an artist whose debut album with Eora/Sydney jazz piano quartet Aronas was a defining work for the early days of Utility Fog (you can stream Culture Tunnels on SoundCloud and elsewhere). Pianist & composer Aron Ottignon had moved to Sydney from New Zealand (his brother Matt still plays around this city in many ensembles), and the group embodied the post-jazz feel, at least on record, that sat perfectly with the UFog sound. Aron soon decamped to the UK & Europe, embedding traditional musics from around the world into his art (Aronas’ album Culture Tunnels was influenced by South Pacific rhythms). Now the Aroma project sees Aron playing the Osmose “expressive synth” alongside singer, sound-artist, label head & Afro-futurist Nina Kahle. This song, recorded in Senegal, is their take on the beautiful John Coltrane tune “After The Rain”, using the multiple gestures the Osmose adds to each individual key of the piano keyboard, with Kahle’s vocals and field recordings ebbing and flowing. To kick off the new year, host Paula Felps sits down with Jodi Wellman, author of You Only Die Once: How to Make It to the End with No Regrets, to explore how to make the most of the new year. Jodi explains how embracing life's ultimate deadline can spark astonishing aliveness and help us break free from our comfort zones, rediscover what lights us up, and consciously reprioritize what truly matters. Listen as Jodi tells us how to stop postponing joy and start living like we mean it. In this episode, you'll learn: Why acknowledging life's “deadline” can motivate us to live more fully. How to recognize signs of feeling “dead inside” and reignite vitality. Practical ways to say yes to experiences that create meaning and aliveness.
Introduction We conclude our series of God's family. We focus on Christ's baptism as presented in Luke and Matthew. While critics often point to differences between the Gospel accounts as contradictions, Scripture itself treats multiple witnesses as a strength, not a weakness. Each evangelist emphasizes different aspects of the same event to reveal deeper theological meaning. Luke and Matthew are not competing narrators; they are complementary witnesses. Luke highlights humility, reversal, and inclusion, while Matthew emphasizes fulfillment, covenant faithfulness, and judgment. Together, they teach us not only who Christ is, but what it means to belong to God's family. Jesus is the great equalizer. Luke's Report of Christ's Debut Luke carefully crafts a narrative in which social expectations are overturned. He introduces John the Baptist through the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth. Remember that this is an elite, priestly family. The controversy is that they are barren. This carries cultural shame. Though Luke assures us they were righteous, their childlessness would have been interpreted by society as divine displeasure. Their exalted place in their genealogy is taken away. They are humbled. However, the Lord exalts them in his timing. John's birth removes that reproach. His birth restores their honorable place. There is a parallel story of Mary. She is a peasant woman. We do not know her genealogy. She is young and should be praising Elizabeth. Astonishingly, when Mary visits Elizabeth, it is Elizabeth who humbles herself, recognizing Mary as the more significant figure. The unborn John leaps in the womb, and Mary responds with the Magnificat. Mary does not exalt herself, but celebrates that God lifts up the humble. He also humbles the exalted. These stories form the backdrop for Christ's baptism. Luke summarizes Christ's baptism, but he does so after John goes to prison. This kingdom is established by the humble being exalted. Christ will submit to death to be raised to life. The baptism communciates Christ's movement. The heavens open and the Spirit descends like a dove. We would expect judgment like in the flood or echoes in Isaiah. Luke wants us to see that Christ secures the lowly to exalt them in the new family. Matthew's Report of Christ's Debut Matthew introduces John the Baptist abruptly. There is no backstory for John. He appears, and he is preaching. John arrives as a prophetic firebrand proclaiming judgment. His harshest words are aimed not at moral outcasts but at the religious elite. Matthew wants Israel to understand that covenant membership alone does not equal righteousness. Joseph's role reinforces this theme. Matthew gives Joseph a voice to emphasize that Christ really is in David's line (2 Sam. 7). Matthew shows that Jesus does not merely erase Adam's sin. Christ's mission is to relieve and fulfill Israel's story. He is Israel's messiah who cleanses his people and secures the nations. This framework climaxes in Christ's baptism. John recognizes the theological tension: the Messiah does not need cleansing. John needs his cleansing from Christ. Yet Jesus insists that baptism is necessary “to fulfill all righteousness.” Christ is submitting to judgment. The first judgment with heaven opening. He bears the judgment Israel deserved and consecrates Himself to cleanse His people. Matthew emphasizes that God's promises move from prophetic assertion to historical fulfillment in Christ alone. What is Baptism? Luke and Matthew do not contradict one another; they emphasize different facets of the same redemptive reality. Luke highlights that the humble are welcomed into God's family. The outsiders and the unworthy people need their exaltation in Christ. Matthew highlights how redemption is accomplished through Christ reliving Israel's history. The elite bear testimony showing that Christ really is king. Luke shows Christ forming a new international family where identity is grounded in grace, not status. Matthew shows Christ as the covenantal redeemer who submits to divine judgment so His people may live. Together, they proclaim that Christ is both the humble King and the righteous Judge, the one who humbles the proud and raises the lowly by first humbling Himself unto death. The family of God, therefore, is neither a refuge for self-righteous elites nor a consolation prize for the weak. We must see ourselves as members of a redeemed community united under one Messiah who has borne judgment and secured peace. We are not a worthy people, but a people who have been made worthy. Conclusion Both Luke and Matthew testify that true shalom is found only in Christ. This is not a shallow peace of tolerance or coexistence, but a restored communion with God. Christ does not merely endure us; He redeems us. He enters judgment, fulfills righteousness, and rises triumphant so that heaven's verdict of death is overturned. Whether we are tempted to trust in our prestige or despair over our brokenness, the call is the same: find your identity in Christ alone. He is the great equalizer. We note that the exalted must kneel, the humble are raised, and all who come find life in Him. As we move forward, we are reminded that our entire existence is situated in Christ. As the saying attributed to Luther puts it: Live as though Christ died yesterday, rose today, and is coming again tomorrow. This is not a life of terror, but of confidence. The Redeemer has overcome. Our consecration, our joy, and our power are found in Him alone. Let us live before his face as we walk in HIs power, seeking to conform to Him.
The readings for this homily: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/122125.cfmFather Chris, MIC leads us into the hidden strength and obedience of Saint Joseph—a man whose silence speaks louder than words. While Mary's fiat is rightly celebrated, salvation history also depended on Joseph's quiet “yes.” Without it, Jesus would not have had the legal lineage of David, nor the protection and provision of a faithful earthly father.Joseph stands as the head of the Holy Family, chosen by God to guard what was most sacred. Though sinless perfection belonged only to Mary, the Church has long taught that Joseph was sanctified for his mission. Astonishingly, God Himself chose to live in obedience to Mary and Joseph, revealing the dignity of family life and the authority entrusted to fathers.Matthew's Gospel shows us the Nativity through Joseph's eyes. Faced with confusion and fear, Joseph chose charity over judgment. Only after he resolved to act mercifully did God send clarity through an angelic dream. Scripture reminds us that God's guidance often follows—not precedes—acts of trust. “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid” (Mt 1:20; NABRE).Saint Joseph models humility, courage, chastity, and obedience to God's will. As patron of the family and the Church—two realities most fiercely attacked—his role is more urgent than ever. His life teaches us that holiness is often hidden, obedience is rarely loud, and faith is proven in action.Saint Joseph, patron of a happy death, pray for us. ★ Support this podcast ★
What a mess.I mean America's corporatized, bureaucratic, profiteering medical system. It's as though the Marx Brothers and Franz Kafka conspired to create it.Yet, in the midst of that mess, there is one saving grace – namely the everyday workforce of dedicated nurses, therapists, hygienists, and other skilled, hands-on professionals who are the true heart of health care.Astonishingly, though, when Trump & Co. bellowed this year that they intended to reform the medical system and slash costs, guess who they targeted for cuts? Certainly not the lavishly-paid CEOs and corporate price gougers who donate billions to Trump. Instead, they're going after our frontline caregivers, the one segment of the system that prioritizes patient health over corporate profits.Yet, channeling Kafka's surrealism and Groucho's slapstick, Trump and his GOP Congress are not only downgrading this vital workforce, but denigrating it. They've directed the US Education Department to decree that nurses are no longer “professionals.”One immediate impact is that many young people who want to pursue careers in patient care will no longer be eligible for the government's student loans for advanced medical courses. This means that non-rich students will effectively be blocked from earning specialized degrees … and higher salaries. In the bigger picture, Trump's insult to these essential medical professionals amounts to government-enforced plutocracy, mandating inequality, as well as inferior health care. Moreover, three-fourths of the health-provider jobs Trump wants to degrade are filled by women. Apparently, it's part of his increasing attempts to belittle and bully women. As one nurse says of his attack on her profession: “It's just a smack in the face.” For information and action, go to NationalNursesUnited.org.Jim Hightower's Lowdown is a reader-supported publication. Click here for more on this topic and other free resources - https://www.drjimrichards.com Fellowship With the Spirit The very first letter of the Hebrew alphabet carries a profound message: it reveals God's first and highest intention for mankind. From the beginning, God's deepest desire has been to harmonize Himself with mankind and establish heaven on earth. And within that first letter, we discover not only God's highest priority but also the path by which His intention is fulfilled. In the block letters of the Hebrew alef-bet, this letter conveys that the life of God flows into us when we become one with the Father through the Lord Jesus. In the New Testament, we find 15 references to our fellowship with God the Father, Jesus the Son, the Holy Spirit, and with one another. Through the centuries, this powerful concept has been reduced to little more than social gatherings. Nearly every denominational church in America has a “fellowship hall,” typically furnished with tables and chairs, designed to share meals. While these connections matter, they fall far short of the true meaning of biblical fellowship. Five times in the New Testament, we find the word 'communion.' It is used to contrast our interaction with righteousness and unrighteousness, light and darkness, and it is even used to describe the Lord's Supper. Then, in 2 Corinthians, we see the word distribution. What do all these words share in common? Astonishingly, fellowship, communion, and distribution all come from one Greek word: koinonia. Koinonia refers to an intimate sharing—where possessions, resources, and even life itself are shared equally among those in a relationship. This gives us a powerful glimpse into God's intention. Communion with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit means that in Christ we share equally in all that He is and all that He has. Jesus said the Father has given Him all things, and He promised that the Holy Spirit would take everything He received from the Father and bring it to us. This reveals God's first and highest intention: that we would share in everything He has and everything He is. This is far more than receiving blessings—it is the supernatural process of faith and grace by which we become one with Him through Jesus, participating in the very life of God and experiencing heaven on earth. Join me this week in CyberChurch as we uncover the mystery of sharing in the inheritance Jesus received from the Father—and discover what true fellowship with the Spirit really means.
Making Money Minute with Ron Hiebert - elling Is Hard To Do People are not very good at buying stocks, but they are even worse at selling - and that includes the pros. A study between 2000 and 2016, looked at 4.4 million trades done by professional asset managers. They specifically focused on the sell side of these transactions. Whenever the professional manager would sell a security in the portfolio, a computer would hypothetically select a random, different, security and sell it. Astonishingly, the computers random selections, outperformed the sales of professional managers by quite a margin. Buying is hard. Selling is even harder.

In this episode of Gospel Spice, Stephanie Rousselle invites us to explore the theme of identity and belonging, centered on what it means to be “in Christ.” Building upon the previous episode on adoption (See Episode 409), we ponder how our sense of self is transformed and anchored by God's love, the work of Christ, and the sealing of the Holy Spirit. The Seal of the Holy Spirit: Marked as Belonging In Ephesians 1:13, Paul writes that believers are “sealed with the Holy Spirit.” Stephanie invites us to consider a seal as it was in ancient times—a stamp pressed into soft wax, leaving a permanent imprint. In this analogy, we are like the wax, transformed and marked by the very nature and authority of God Himself. This seal signifies both our identity—we are marked as God's own—and our security. Just as a sealed envelope is protected and identified by its seal, we are both set apart and protected through the Spirit. Satan may attempt to attack or tempt us, but he cannot invade what has been sealed by God. The Intimacy and Assurance of the Spirit The Holy Spirit is the real, tangible presence of God in us—a downpayment of our future inheritance with Him. Stephanie encourages us to let the Spirit guide and comfort us, reminding us of God's love, providing peace in hardship, and strengthening us with God's own power. The assurance that God delights in us isn't because of our greatness, but because of His extravagant love and the transformation He accomplishes within us. The Spirit teaches us not only of God's love for us, but enables us to truly love Him in return. Belonging and the Two Dimensions of the Gospel Paul describes our identity as involving both a vertical and horizontal dimension: our faith in Christ (vertical) and our love for one another (horizontal), forming a cross-shaped understanding of the gospel. In Christ, we belong not only to God, but also to one another as members of His body, the church. This new community is called out, sealed, and set apart for God's purposes. Seated with Christ: Rest and Purpose A powerful image throughout Ephesians is that we are “seated with Christ” (Ephesians 2:6). In the ancient temple, priests never sat because their work was unfinished. By contrast, Christ, having completed His redemptive work, sits at God's right hand. Astonishingly, we are invited to sit with Him—not striving for salvation, but resting in what He has accomplished. This gives us assurance: nothing can add or take away from our salvation. We are saved by grace, freed for good works—expressions of thanksgiving and calling, not requirements to earn favor. The “But God” Moment Paul paints the “before and after” of our lives: once alienated, separated, and without hope, “but God” intervened in mercy, bringing us near by the blood of Christ. Our past no longer defines us; our new status as beloved, adopted children of God does. Takeaway: Becoming Who You Are in Christ Paul encourages us to hunger for deeper intimacy with God and to rest in the truth that our core identity is found in Christ, sealed by the Spirit, and expressed in loving Him and others. Our calling and purpose flow from being secure in this identity. As Stephanie reminds us, nothing beats knowing Christ and growing daily into the fullness of who we are in Him. ----- IDENTITY IN THE BATTLE WORKBOOK ------ You have the option to go beyond listening to this series, and to participate actively. Ever feel frustrated when people don't seem to "get" what you're saying? The gap between what you mean and what others hear isn't about your words - it's about metacommunication, the powerful yet often overlooked dimension of human connection. This episode unveils the science behind why we're frequently misunderstood. Astonishingly, research shows only 10% of our meaning comes from our actual words, while 30% derives from tone and a whopping 60% from body language. When I deliver feedback like "Your presentation lacked technical depth," the way I frame it completely transforms how it lands - as crushing criticism or as supportive guidance. Metacommunication is communication about communication, the signals that tell others how to interpret your message. It's what separates a comment that breaks trust from one that builds it. Through vivid examples and research-backed insights, I break down why even smart, articulate people struggle to be understood, and why simply knowing about metacommunication isn't enough to master it. The heart of this episode is a practical 5-point checklist for effective metacommunication that you can implement immediately. Each element builds on the next, creating a framework that works whether you're leading a team, building relationships, or navigating difficult conversations. Being understood isn't everything, but it's the first step to anything meaningful. Master these techniques, and you'll transform not just how you communicate, but how you connect, influence, and lead. Ready to be understood - truly understood - for perhaps the first time? Listen now, and discover the metacommunication advantage that changes everything. Romans 12:1-2 "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God..." So begins Paul's earnest plea. He entreats us by the wondrous mercies of our wondrous God described in the previous chapters of Romans: Justification by faith. (Romans 3:24) Peace with God. (Romans 5:1) Access to God's grace. (Romans 5:2) Hope of glory. (Romans 5:2) God's love poured into our hearts. (Romans 5:5) Christ's substitutionary and sin-atoning death. (Romans 5:8) Union with Christ. (Romans 6:4-5) Freedom from sin's dominion. (Romans 6:14) Freedom from condemnation. (Romans 8:1) The indwelling Holy Spirit. (Romans 8:9) Adoption into God's family. (Romans 8:15) God's control of all things for the good of His people. (Romans 8:28) Effectual calling, justification, and glorification. (Romans 8:30) God's invincible love. (Romans 8:38-39) God's sovereign mercy. (Romans 9:15-16) Paul's entreaty is all-encompassing: "Present your bodies as a living sacrifice." Not merely your thoughts, words, or Sundays--but your whole life. A living sacrifice means continual yielding, moment by moment; not a one time gesture, but a continuous daily surrender. Unlike Old Testament sacrifices, which were slain and offered once, we are called to crawl continually upon the altar--offering our eyes, our hands, our tongues, our feet, our time, our energy, our all. Such surrender is described as "holy and pleasing to God." Astonishingly our imperfect obedience, when offered sincerely in Christ--is pleasing to our Father! This sacrifice is our "reasonable service." It is not extreme or fanatical. To hold anything back from the God who gave His Son to die for our sins, is
Architect Stanford White was shot three times at close range by millionaire Harry Kendall Thaw during a performance of Broadway comedy ‘Mamzelle Champagne' on 25th June, 1906. At first, the stunned audience thought it was part of the show. Thaw claimed White had “ruined” his wife, showgirl Evelyn Nesbit - often called America's first ‘It Girl' - who at just 16 had been lured into White's orbit and ‘seduced' by White - though a reading of Nesbit's diary makes it sound a lot more like rape. But sadistic playboy Thaw was no knight in shining armour himself. His legal defense introduced the bizarre concept of dementia Americana—a supposed burst of "patriotic insanity" any red-blooded man might feel upon learning his wife had been wronged. Astonishingly, it worked. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider (yet another) ‘trial of the century'; reveal what happened to Nesbit once the dust had settled; and explain what Thaw used to with his $100 bills… CONTENT WARNING: sexual sadism, abuse, coercive control, description of murder. Beau recounts: * Their electrifying soulmate connection and the "one year" that changed his life. * Melanie's personal struggles with past trauma and how she found healing and purpose through breathwork, a gift she also shared with Beau. * The harrowing experience of finding Melanie after her passing. * His first direct communication with Melanie just ten days later during a breathwork session, where a simple question, "Mel, are you here?" was met with a euphoric surge of electricity through his chakras – her undeniable "yes." * The incredible and evolving ways Melanie continues to communicate: * Chakra sensations for yes/no answers. * Music playlists on YouTube and Spotify seemingly curated by her. * Constant signs and synchronicities. * Powerful and evidential readings with mediums, including Brandy from Brooklyn. * Daily "Featured Photos" appearing on his phone, assembled by Melanie with new messages. * Astonishingly, Morse code messages conveyed through physical twitches in his body. * His intensive healing journey, including trips to Bali, a rigorous routine of journaling, fitness, ice baths, and daily breathwork, which became his lifeline. * Profound messages from Melanie about her passing, her purpose, and the nature of existence. * How this journey led him to create the Sunflower Signals Podcast and The Butterfly Effect Retreat to help others. Beau's story is a testament to the enduring power of love, the resilience of the human spirit, and the undeniable reality that our connections with loved ones continue, evolve, and inspire even after physical death. Let's say you like shrimp. Whether you go for a chain restaurant's happy hour shrimp boil or a pricey plate of “shrimp à la grandioso” at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort – a good question to ask is: Where do they get their shrimp?Even if the restaurant has an ocean view and a shrimp boat out front, chances are its crustaceans come from industrial aquaculture farms thousands of miles away in India, Ecuador, Vietnam and Indonesia. Astonishingly, our country now imports 94 percent of the shrimp we eat!Astonishing, because our oceans have an abundance of top-quality shrimp, and we are blessed with highly-skilled shrimping families. Worse, those foreign industrial operations, financed by Wall Street and global profiteers, are infamous for using forced labor, banned antibiotics, and destructive environmental methods. Then they dump their grossly-cheap product into the US market, pushing out our superior-quality domestic product and devastating entire shrimping communities.Yet, restaurant and supermarket prices for shrimp are at historic highs, with no disclosure to us consumers of where the product is from. The import industry effectively bribes lawmakers to avoid exposing, much less punishing, this multibillion-dollar swindle of American producers and eaters alike. The bait-and-switch conspiracy is now so pervasive that at last year's National Shrimp Festival, four out of five vendors were – shhhh – quietly serving industrially-raised imported shrimp.Of course, corporations have no conscience, but our tough-on-crime political leaders are so pusillanimous that they won't even stand up for their own local shrimpers. A recent Louisiana law, for example, “boldly” requires restaurants to disclose if they're peddling imported shrimp. But, the legislature meekly provided no penalty if violators ignore the law. So… they do.For information on real reform, connect with SanAntonioBayWaterKeeper.org.Jim Hightower's Lowdown is a reader-supported publication. What Is Project Sun Streak? The CIA's Search for the Ark of the Covenant
The Jules Rimet, trophy of the FIFA World Cup, was stolen from a stamp exhibition in Westminster Central Hall on March 20th, 1966 - the year England was hosting (and went on to win) the tournament. The theft sparked a massive Police investigation and multiple offers of rewards for its recovery. Astonishingly, the trophy had not been heavily guarded or alarmed, so the thieves stole it with bolt cutters. In a twist straight out of Enid Blyton, the cup was eventually discovered not by the boys in blue - but by a pet dog called Pickles, who was then lauded as a national hero. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly reveal the identities of the London gangsters who poached the Cup; explain what music hall star Tommy Trinder had to do with it; and discover how, in Brazil, the Cup was to go AWOL again… Further Reading: • ‘The Theft of the Jules Rimet Trophy - The Hidden History of the 1966 World Cup, By Martin Atherton (Meyer & Meyer, 2008): https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/The_Theft_of_the_Jules_Rimet_Trophy/m7SbwNM4Y0sC?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=theft+of+the+world+cup+1966&pg=PA45&printsec=frontcover • ‘The World Cup is stolen' (The Guardian, 1966): https://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/mar/21/world-cup-stolen-football-archive-1966 • ‘Pickles - The dog who saved the 1966 World Cup' (The Sun, 2018): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQjZagahHKU Love the show? Be honest, how much time do you spend looking at screens? It's probably more than you'd care to admit. The bigger question is, what is all that screen time doing to your brain? In this episode I am joined by Richard Cytowic, author of Your Stone Age Brain in the Screen Age. We discuss the impact of screen addiction on the brain and body.Astonishingly, Richard explains that our brains have not evolved since the Stone Age. They also have fixed energy bandwidths that make multitasking inefficient, which leads to overwhelm and a dulled ability to communicate.Richard emphasises the importance of self-awareness for overcoming our addiction to screens, and the power of silence to help our brains to regulate themselves. If you are looking to boost productivity in your workplace this discussion is not to be missed.“Self-awareness is key to managing screen time” – RichardYou'll hear about:· What's going on in our brains?· How does energy relate to neuroplasticity?· What does the screen do to the brain?· The lack of screen regulations· How to start a healthier relationship with screens· The power of silence· Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable· The role and power of dream diaries· Richard's advice for CEOs· What does Richard's best day look like?· The impact Richard wants to have on the world About Richard Cytowic:Richard E. Cytowic, a pioneering researcher in synesthesia, is Professor of Neurology at George Washington University. Who is the most successful president in American history? George Washington secured American independence. Abraham Lincoln preserved the union and ended slavery. Franklin D. Roosevelt ended the Depression, remade government, and won World War II. But if we define "success" as the ability to articulate your goals and achieve every single one of them, perhaps only one president in American history was ever perfectly successful. In 1845, James K. Polk, newly elected by a whisker-thin margin, confided to his friend George Bancroft the four goals of his four years in the White House. Acquire Oregon from Great Britain. Acquire California from Mexico. Reduce the tariff. Establish an independent treasury. Four years later, he'd done all this and more. As the historian Daniel Patrick Howe wrote, "Judged by these objectives, Polk is probably the most successful president the United States has ever had.” And that's why Polk is the subject of today's show. I don't think another president in American history has so large a gap between his modern reputation and his actual achievement. There are two great biographies about Polk that I've read that have been published in the last 20 years. I'm very pleased that today, we have both authors on the show. Walter Borneman is the author of 'Polk: The Man Who Transformed the Presidency and America.' And Robert Merry is the author of 'A Country of Vast Designs: James K. Polk, the Mexican War and the Conquest of the American Continent_._' If you have questions, observations, or ideas for future episodes, email us at PlainEnglish@Spotify.com. The explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger in January 1986 riveted millions of Americans, who watched the horrific event live on television. What they didn't know then was that the tragedy was largely preventable, a disastrous result of hubris and “magical thinking” as much as flawed engineering. Journalist Adam Higginbotham's new book, “Challenger: A True Story of Heroism and Disaster on the Edge of Space,” is a definitive account of what went wrong, and how NASA failed to learn from its own mistakes. Higginbotham's story begins with an earlier fatal accident, a fire in the capsule of the Apollo 1 mission, which presaged Challenger's fate. He then recounts the early days of the space shuttle program. Astonishingly, the very mechanical flaws that led to Challenger's destruction were known, but the warnings of a few engineers were ignored by more senior officials, who by the time Challenger was set to launch the first teacher into space faced tremendous political and public pressure to make the mission happen, despite obvious risks. Higginbotham spoke with Shane Harris about his book, why he wanted to tell the Challenger story, and the future of human spaceflight. Essential to any history of Venice during its glory days is the story of its Jewish population. Venice gave the world the word ghetto. Astonishingly, the ghetto prison turned out to be as remarkable a place as the city of Venice itself, as a literary, cultural and interfaith revival flourished.
