Alien Lanes by Guided By Voices, their first for Matador Records, expanded upon the lo-fi, hook-driven bursts of songs from previous release Bee Thousand. Its chaotic, collage-like structure packs 28 tracks into just over 40 minutes, thanks to the raw, four-track production gives the album an intimate, unpolished feel. Songs end abruptly, vocals are buried, guitars are out of tune, yet the melodies emerge from the fuzz with a mix of power pop charm and punk spontaneity.Widely considered one of their best works, Alien Lanes remains a cult favorite and a defining record of '90s indie rock.   Songs In This Episode Intro - Watch Me Jumpstart 17:09 - Motor Away 20:20 - Closer You Are 30:38 - Ex-Supermodel 36:20 - Strawdogs 38:19 - My Valuable Hunting Knife Outro - Blimps Go 90   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Adam overcame his fear of assigning a 20 song record because he felt we needed to do more indie classics. Fun to hear his three co-hosts' take on a challenging 1994 lo-fi listen that was once named by Amazon music writers as the #1 indie album of all-time. Chris is getting frustrated that we are not superfamous yet so he insisted we do the obvious thing and cover an album that no one has ever heard of. Good thing the album he chose is saucy and bossy and sounds 100% exactly like Bee Thousand by Guided by Voices and also exactly like Who Could It Be Now if that was written by Sting or some other non Australian. Note to self: google if Sting from Australia. Also up for discussion: One of us admits to things that would never hold up in a court of law so don't even try it, Drake buys a velveteen car, and a double BevCheck to whet yr whistle. This week, Dan, Mike, and Rich take a break from the usual state-of-the-art Discord & Rhyme studio, dust off the four-track, and head down to the basement with a case of beer for a no-frills chat about Guided by Voices. After percolating as 37-year-old school teacher Robert Pollard’s side hustle for over a decade, GBV (as we refer to them for 99% of the episode) suddenly found themselves on the radar of hip indie-rock tastemakers. 1994’s Bee Thousand captures this turning point for the band with a gloriously messy patchwork of 20 home-recorded songs that incorporate influences of what Pollard calls the Four P’s of Rock: prog, psych, pop, and punk. Jam along with us to these lo-fi anthems, and try to not pull a muscle while imitating Pollard’s signature stage kicks. (Rated Explicit for occasional naughty language.) Attempts at being flowery about a rock record are definitely contained within.  This, being posted in the final moments of June 21st, is a reflection on Guided By Voices' 1994 indie classic Bee Thousand which celebrates its 20th anniversary on the aforementioned day.  There are some thoughts on the reunited lineup and some interesting pop culture tidbits but ultimately this is one humble attempt at celebrating twenty years of Bee Thousand.  Be on the lookout for more reflections back to other great albums from 1994 in upcoming episodes. Episode 5, which should come out in July, will center around Francis Ford Coppola's One From The Heart which features the music of Tom Waits and is currently available on Netflix "Watch Instant".  For more episodes of the podcast, go to flickeringwaves.com or iTunes.  Also look for the YouTube playlist for this and other episodes of the podcast.

The aftermath of Record Store Day left Terry overwhelmed in the best possible way.  This episode explores the variety of music that came his way over roughly a four-to-six week period.  As the title of the episode would suggest, XTC does play a small part.  However, that Skylarking reissue is discussed as well as compliations from Numero Group, Rough Guide & Light In The Attic.  Then there are the recent releases and reissues from Courtney Barnett, Flaming Lips, The Both, Tori Amos, Liam Finn, Wye Oak, R.E.M. and The Zombies.  In short, if there isn't any music for you then Terry would suggest seeking some out at your "local" record store.  If you don't know of one then recordstoreday.com might be able to help.  Please support your local, independently minded record stores. For more episodes or to show some support for the podcast, you can subscribe, download and comment on the podcast on iTunes.  Downloads of the podcast are available at flickeringwaves.com.  There is also a Flickering Waves YouTube which has playlists for this and earlier episodes. Episode 4 will celebrates the 20th anniversary of the release of Guided by Voices' classic Bee Thousand.  And given their two 2014 releases, they too get a brief mention in this episode of the podcast.  A lot of music to talk about but not in a lot of time so don't be surprise if some of this resurfaces in upcoming episodes.
