The Rev. Joshua Frazee, associate pastor St. John's Lutheran Church in Mayville, WI, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Titus 1. St. Paul begins his letter to Pastor Titus by outlining the crucial need for church leaders to be “above reproach” and teach sound doctrine. Although expected of all Christians, as representatives of Christ, there is a higher burden on pastors in this regard. Paul then strongly warns against false teachers and stresses the importance of confronting them. This chapter underscores the vital role of leaders in upholding the truth of the gospel and maintaining the church's integrity. The "Pastoral Epistles" of 1st and 2nd Timothy and Titus, written by the Apostle Paul and divinely inspired by the Holy Spirit, are a treasure trove of invaluable insights into the early Christian church and God's expectation for its leaders. These letters, brimming with wisdom, are not relics of the past but remain authoritative today. They offer a roadmap for navigating the challenges of leadership and teaching, making them not only essential for understanding the role of pastors but also for all Christians seeking to live a life that honors God's will.

► Amber Wilde was a student at the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay at the time of her disappearance; she had transferred there three weeks before, having completed an associate's degree at a community college. She last spoke to her family September 23, 1998, after she got into a minor car accident. She was not seriously injured, but she did hit her head on the windshield and had a headache afterwards. The other person involved in the crash called Wilde's apartment in the 2000 block of August Street that evening to work out damages.Wilde had class at 1:00 p.m. the next day. Her father, who lived in Mayville, Wisconsin, called his daughter to wake her up for her class but received no answer. She also missed a scheduled eye doctor's appointment and other obligations, which is uncharacteristic of her. Her father drove to Green Bay and found Wilde's apartment locked. He then reported her missing.⚠️ If you have any information regarding any of these cases please call:Crime Stoppers: 1-800-222-TIPS.NPS Investigates: 1-888-653-0009

Rev. Joshua Frazee, associate pastor St. John's Lutheran Church, Mayville, WI, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study 1 Corinthians 12:1-11. St. Paul turns to spiritual gifts in this part of his letter to the Corinthian Christians. Although he'll go into greater detail in chapter fourteen, his main focus here is to point his hearers to the source of all spiritual gifts: the Holy Spirit. Undoubtedly, the Corinthians valued power and prestige. As they looked out upon the pagan landscape and saw so-called spiritual people with seemingly great abilities, they began to treat the gifts of God in the same way, as a means to set oneself apart from others. The apostle sets them straight: all gifts are from God and are to be used for the common good. In this episode, Pastors Booe and Frazee explore these principles and walk through each gift listed to talk about what it might look like today.

The events that happened in Kekoskee, Wisconsin are so extraordinary and improbable that I always hesitate about telling the story. The evidence is legal, convincing and overwhelming.  In total it makes up the grandest fish story in the history of a lifetime. It is really a story about bullheads, and of course it is a beautiful story, for the bullhead is naturally a romantic fish.  Every man in Mayville and Kekoskee knows this story, and without any hint or coaching will tell it to you exactly as his neighbor does.  Everyone in town knows the horse too.  You see, there was a horse in the story – which in time you will come to know.  It all happened way back in 1860, when the Horicon Marsh was Horicon Lake.  Back then the Rock River ran into Horicon which was the  largest man-made lake in the United States. Today, the river runs into the marsh at the same place where it used to run into the lake.  It's the same river, and the people of Mayville will take you to the same place, and show you where the story happened. So you can't possibly doubt the truth of the details of this story. It was an awfully cold winter that year, and that has something to do with the story, too.    -EMERSON HOUGH

Happy Valentine's Day to all you sportsmen and women out there across the fruited plain! Your humble host also congratulates the LA Rams for their Super Bowl win. In hunting news, NYSDEC has released their 2021 Black bear Harvest, which was down from 2020 and the 5 year average, but this was in part due to lower acorn and other tree nut crops this past season. It is thought the gypsy moths played a big role in diminishing tree nut production. Meanwhile, Ohio has released their final deer harvest numbers for the 2021/ 2022 season, and Ohio actually provides weekly updates throughout the season! Meanwhile, hunting is experiencing a resurgence and growth in the hunting ranks, as more women and minorities take an interest in the conservation lifestyle. In NY, in fact, women in 2020 accounted for 33% of all people taking a hunter's safety course, and with the advent of tandem treestands, more are now joining their boyfriend or husband in the stand during the season! In fishing news, the ice is nice and many hatcheries in NY will be getting much needed repairs, but in Washington State the failure of an aged rubber gasket led to the escape of nearly 250,000 young steelhead, escaping into the Snake River system. The balance of the fish that this hatchery raises are now being held in the Cottonwood Acclimation Pond near the Oregon border. The Great Lakes Commission has announced they are holding a series of webinars they dub the Great Lakes Coffee Hour sessions, starting Feb 28-March 4. Visit the Great Lakes Commission website for more information. Ice fishing is in full swing, and even Lake Erie is showing more ice cover than we see historically for this time of year, but things may not be safe quite yet in the Eastern basin. Inland lakes, meanwhile show great ice conditions, and this weekend is the first free fishing weekend in NYS. Everyone can fish without a license on Feb 19 and 20 this year, so get out and enjoy! The Ice Castle and Winterfest in Mayville, NY happens this weekend, starting Friday the 18th at 6PM, running through Sunday Feb 20 4PM. The Great Backyard Bird Count starts this weekend as well, Feb 18-21, visit birdcount.org for more information and how to participate. NY has also announced the opening of the WNY portion of the NYS Birding trail, and this section features 36 stations across several WNY counties. Birding has grown in popularity over the past 20 years, and this is a way you can share your love of birds with avian research teams across the globe. Feb 15 also marks the start of the Erie Canalway Challenge, which recognizes your overcoming this challenge to trek 15 miles along the Erie Canal from Feb 15-28. Visit Eriecanalway.org for more info. Finally, your humble host discusses even more problems with offshore wind energy and the efforts of CAWTILE to stop these schemes from destroying our waters of life. When we think about the birding and the life in the area today, we often lose the fact that in 1970 we did not have many birds, no fish, lots of insects, no waterfront dinners or activities, nothing. We don't want to see a return of this which will happen if greed is allowed and not defeated. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rich-davenport/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rich-davenport/support

In Edible-Alpha® podcast #104, Brad interviews Rachel Smith, founder of Sweet Pea's, a made-from-scratch treat shop in downtown Mayville, Wisconsin. Along with baking pies and other goodies onsite for its retail store, Sweet Pea's has a growing wholesale business, an e-commerce site, and fundraiser partnerships. Rachel aka “Sweet Pea” started baking with her grandmothers as a child and envisioned owning a unique bakery someday. Back in 2009, while still living in Minnesota, she started doing take-and-bake pies and selling them at a local meat market, quickly turning it into a pie destination. As business boomed, her husband helped bake, and they'd pull in extra hands during busy seasons. They also set up a rudimentary website for online orders. Through the next decade, Rachel and her husband grew the business slowly. With full-time jobs and busy family life, they felt no pressure to move faster. Instead, they took advantage of what Rachel calls “a very long market research period,” which prepared them for their big move to Wisconsin and the next iteration of their business. Almost two years ago, the Smiths bought an old building in downtown Mayville, initially planning to renovate it into a manufacturing facility for wholesale. But upon learning the locals loved the historic site and wanted to come inside, “we realized we'd get the support of the community if we heard their request for retail,” Rachel explains. “That was the first of many changes to our business model.” Since renovating to retail standards would require more money, the Smiths connected with the University of Wisconsin's Small Business Development Center, which led them to the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation for a Community Development Investment (CDI) Grant. They also secured financing from the city, plus a community-funded Kiva loan, and several townspeople donated their time and skills to the renovation. Sweet Pea's started manufacturing in Mayville in July 2020 and opened the retail shop two months later. During this time, Rachel was also still producing pies in Minnesota, earning her MBA, and had “stumbled upon fundraisers” as another revenue stream. She also participated in FFI's Scenario Planning workshop, which helped her see her next smartest move: professionalizing Sweet Pea's online presence and ordering platform. Brad and Rachel discuss the ins and outs of entrepreneurship, including the importance of knowing and honoring your talents rather than trying to be everything to everyone. That said, Rachel always stays abreast of market trends and aims to deliver the flavors and formats customers crave. They also touch on the value of having a strong financing team and supportive bank that understands the food space. As part of her master's coursework, Rachel is currently evaluating whether the fundraiser channel makes financial sense. Meanwhile, Sweet Pea's continues to navigate the ongoing pandemic and labor constraints, having just gotten accepted to UW's work-study program. Moving forward, Sweet Pea's will refine its business model, establish its wholesale capacity and determine how it wants to grow, whether by pitching to more grocery stores or opening more locations—or both. Regardless, Rachel is excited to create jobs locally, foster skills development, and empower others to do this fulfilling work.

In this week's episode of We Love Outdoors with Rich Davenport, your humble host provides some insight into some recent discoveries and resulting orders concerning PFAS contamination detected in whitetail deer in Maine. An eat none order was issued for the Fairfield are when 5 of 8 deer tested showed high levels of PFOS, a chemical linked to several illnesses including cancers. This isn't the first such order, as in 2018 Michigan issued a similar order for a 5-mile radius around Clark's Marsh due to PFOS contamination from the old Wurtsmith Air Base, stemming from fire fighting foam used on the base. Michigan has since reduced the area to a 3 mile radius, but this recent announcement is disturbing, to say the least. Officials will be testing turkey as well. The organization the Environmental Working Group, has an interactive map showing the identified PFAS contaminated sites across the 50 states and 2 territories of the USA, and as of October 2021, over 2800 such sites have been confirmed. Similarly, the NYSDEC has announced that the new drinking water restoration plan for Hoosick Falls, a village just northeast of Albany, as this village has suffered with PFOA contamination in their drinking water after decades of pollution from factories in the village owned by Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics, Honeywell, 3M and DuPont. Remember, in 2020, Mayville, NY had to shutter their artesian wells due to PFOS from the fire training grounds nearby, forcing a new well be dug to restore services and water to the village. Everyone's favorite subject, covid covid covid, is once again in the news with the discovery and predictable breathless reporting of the dreaded omicron strain, first detected in South Africa. DEC has gotten on the covid covid covid bandwagon, announcing the "Take Your Shot for Outdoors Adventure", which is an incentive program to get the jab, where the first 2,000 outdoors people that get their first shot between December 1 and 31, will be eligible to win one of several different prizes for taking the experimental vaccines. Five winners will be selected to receive the large prizes, valued at $2,000.00, and another 5 will win the tier 2 prizes valued at $1000.00. I am wonder where the money is coming from to do this, as all 2,000 will receive a free tree seedling, a $25 gift card and a subscription to the Conservationist Magazine. We Love Outdoors congratulates ECO Steven Shaw for inning the ECO of the Year Award from Safari Club International, a new fishing access site has been announced for Lewis County, DEC summer camp registration opens March 6, the Greater Niagara Fishing Expo is coming up in February, as is the first free fishing weekend for the year in NY, which is the President's Day weekend, Feb 19 and 20, 2022. Finally the offshore wind battles are heating up, both in the Atlantic and Great Lakes, with BOEM hosting some workshops for commercial and recreational fishermen, while NOAA issues slow go areas to protect migrating right whales moving through NY and NJ waters on their way south. I wonder if turbines will be offline during those migrations to spare them from the negative impacts of infrasound? And the CEO of LEEDCO, the ones pushing the Ice Breaker Project in Ohio, has left the company and jumped to Diamond Offshore Wind, in a move that looks like he is throwing in the towel on the Ohio "demonstration project". The lobbyists pushing this meritless idea are flooding WNY with ADs seeking support. They will play the kabuki theater on this one, be advised. Opposition is very strong on WNY, and most are strongly opposed to screwing up the lakes - its our freshwater. Keep the turbines out! Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to all my listeners! On this new episode of Got Your 6, Tony Nash talks with Drew Mayville, a US Army Special Operations Forces veteran and special operations equipment manager at Beaver Fit North America. Drew, who transitioned out of the military just over a year ago, says he still carries with him some habits from the military, such as waking up early and having a regimented schedule. This helps him keep his discipline and momentum primed as well as setting his day's tempo. However, there are some key lessons he had to unlearn as he navigates the civilian life. Now, he tells veterans to learn how to prioritize themselves. He reminds veterans that the military keeps on moving and turning even without you, so you need to take care of yourself, too. While veterans should not abandon their military values, he says they have to be flexible in adopting to new values. “You're the priority in this transition. You really got to build your stake and look out for your own interests because you don't have this giant big green Army machine looking out for you.” “Money isn't everything, but it is a thing. That's just how the civilian world works." ----- Growing up in a military family and having served for a decade, Drew says another lesson he had to let go of is focusing too much on the future. He is now working on living life in the moment. Enjoying the present allows him to take a step back and see the big picture, especially in his job and career.   Ranger School and getting difficult things done One thing that has made a tremendous impact in his life is Ranger School, which he says was the first hard thing he did coming out of West Point. He learned a lot about leadership and, most of all, about himself. It has become a motivation for him to get up and do better every day. As he says, once you have a Ranger tab, people expect more from you. You also expect more from yourself. It was also there where he learned one key lesson in failure that has stayed with him until now. He recalls their last week at SFAS or the Special Forces Assessment and Selection, where his team was leading in the early events but went downhill after encountering a problem – getting stuck on making it easy to transport telephone poles and ropes led to internal bickering and conflict. Then, a teammate calmly told them that the issue is that they spend so much time and effort to make it easier instead of accepting the enormity of the task and just get it done anyway. While it's sometimes good to think outside the box, Drew says, “sometimes you just gotta have it done.” “It's gonna suck; the sooner you can get over the fact that it is gonna suck, the quicker you're gonna get to the end.” Tomorrow is always a good day to be better  Drew shares his mindset in ensuring continuous improvement: There's always a tomorrow to become a better version of yourself. He says it does not matter so much what happened yesterday – whether you failed or succeeded –because that is already over. You have to focus on what can still be done. Failures and mistakes are part of change and learning, but they should not control you. “Learn from it but don't dwell on it. Forget what happened yesterday, good and bad, and just focus on the present and just know tomorrow's coming. I can do better tomorrow.” ----- https://www.tenthousand.cc/ (Ten Thousand) promo code for 15% off your first order: GOTYOUR6 https://forms.gle/Hue634JVwsjhaPJ17 (Stacking Wins)

Could rural America become a hotbed of progressive politics?   Luke Mayville, co-founder of the grassroots movement Reclaim Idaho and a lecturer of political philosophy at Boise State University's Honors College, certainly thinks so.   His conviction comes from firsthand experience. In 2018, Mayville helped Idaho become the only predominantly rural state in America to approve Medicaid expansion in a statewide referendum.   On this episode, he talks with associate editor Matt Sitman about that campaign, arguing that if we want to pass more progressive legislation, we should put our energies into on-the-ground organizing and local persuasion.
