Prior to joining the staff at Hamilton, Cooper was the head coach at Keystone College in La Plume, Pa., from 2013 to 2023 and an assistant coach at Keystone for the previous two seasons.Cooper has also been the 17U boys' coach for Scranton-based NEPA Elite AAU since 2022, and was an assistant coach at his alma mater -- SUNY Fredonia -- during the 2010-11 season. He graduated from Fredonia as one of the top 15 all-time leading scorers at the school with 1,077 career points and was a two-time member of the State University of New York Athletic Conference men's basketball all-conference team. On this episode Brad Cooper reflects on the significance of consistency, preparation, and the cultivation of a positive team culture in the context of rebuilding a basketball program. Throughout the discussion, he emphasizes the importance of maintaining a steadfast approach, irrespective of the outcomes of games, as it ultimately fosters a winning mentality among players. Cooper articulates his philosophy of using basketball as a tool for personal development, highlighting how this mindset shapes not only the athletes on the court but also their lives beyond the game. We delve into the challenges of competing in the Empire 8, the necessity of effective communication, and the paramount importance of professionalism in recruitment. Welcome to Why Music Matters, a podcast where we examine the power and influence that music can wield in our lives.  I'm your host, Jeff Miers. Today, my guests are three musicians who seemed destined to end up playing together. Guitarist/vocalist Drew Azzinaro, bassist/vocalist Eamon Rayhn and drummer Ethan Fox all hail from Buffalo, NY, and they met in the music department at the State University of New York at Fredonia a decade back.  It would take them a few years and a handful of varied musical ventures for them to finally come together as the FAR Trio. But when they did start playing together as a unit, to borrow a phrase from Robert Fripp, “Grace was present.” Performing what they describe as a blend of “earthy fusion and soul-drenched rock'n roll,”  with a healthy dose of improvisation and a keen ear for adventurous song structures, the Far Trio quickly earned a reputation as a top tier live act. They've since released a pair of studio albums, and are currently at work on a third, in Woodstock, NY.  In between, they've managed to perform more than 150 shows a year across the Northeast.   During our chat, we touched on musical inspiration, the power of improvisation, and music's ability to elevate both the musician and the listener.  Welcome to Why Music Matters, Drew, Eamon and Ethan - the FAR Trio.

Christmas Eve, 1913. For months, newspapers have been trumpeting an urgent message: Do your Christmas shopping early. It would be easy to assume this was the work of greedy department stores and slick ad companies. But it wasn't – at least not at first. It started as the rallying cry of a labor reformer who was striving to improve the lives of retail workers. Ever since, Americans have been wrestling over the values at the heart of holiday shopping. But even the most earnest efforts at reform have backfired, time and again. How did Christmas gifts become a thing in the first place? And what were some of the spirited attempts to make the holiday shopping season merry for all? Special thanks to our guests: Jennifer Le Zotte, professor of history and material culture at the University of North Carolina - Wilmington; Ellen Litwicki, professor emerita at the State University of New York at Fredonia; and Paul Ringel, professor of history at High Point University and author of Commercializing Childhood. Hey there, music lovers.  Welcome to Why Music Matters, a podcast where we examine the power and influence that music can wield in our lives.  I'm your host, Jeff Miers. Today, I'm joined by three musicians whose work has intrigued me for decades, from the first time I heard them - while studying at the State University of New York at Fredonia in the late 80s - through to the present day.   Mary Ramsey, John Lombardo and Jerry Augustyniak of 10,000 Maniacs are all significant names in the world of indie and alternative music, and were prime movers in the College Radio-fueled alternative explosion of the late 80s and early 90s.  Over the past few years, 10,000 Maniacs have been touring, playing a setlist that covers 40 years of material to an audience composed of many people who have been following the band from the beginning. These days, some of those people are attending these concerts with their children, signifying the band's cross generational appeal.  The band plays its first Buffalo show in many years on Saturday, October 19, when they return to the Center for the Arts on the University at Buffalo's North Campus at 8 pm.  Welcome to Why Music Matters, Mary Ramsey, John Lombardo and Jerry Augustyniak of 10,000 Maniacs…

Born in Kentucky to a British expat, Nick Teale combines the soulful storytelling of classic Americana with the compositional and experimental mentality of British art-rock. Although primarily a solo acoustic artist, Teale also has a full band, in both cases tackling everything from folk and Americana to rock, metal, blues, jazz, and hip-hop. Teale's eclectic musical palate is the culmination of a life rich in musical experiences–from his parents' CDs of Handel, Pat Metheny, Lucinda Williams, and the Clash to his high school obsession with Led Zeppelin and prog rock, all the way through to his forays into Middle Eastern music as a grad student at UT-Austin. Teale's music has been featured in publications from his native Louisville to South America and Europe, and his songs have played over airwaves in Knoxville, Fort Collins, Asheville, Fredonia, and beyond! In 2023, Teale earned an honorable mention in Songdoor's International Songwriting Contest for his song Drive You Home, which will feature on his album “Glitterfingers” releasing soon! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tophillrecording/support

How I Got Here with Dave Fiore

Host Dave Fiore speaks with Alan Hanstein, the executive director of the Challenger Learning Center in downtown Tallahassee. Alan grew up in Rockland County, New York, a short drive from Manhattan that provided for fun and relatively safe teenage exploration – at least during the day. His life took a dramatic turn while headed home on winter break from The State University of New York at Fredonia, when he and his friends stopped to help an overturned tractor trailer during a snowstorm. A passing car hit Alan on the side of the road, flipping him into a snowbank, breaking both legs and changing the trajectory of his life. After a remarkably fast recovery and exploring a few life options, Alan decided to continue his education at Florida State, where a European trip derailed his education for a bit, before he eventually returned to earn his degree. It was during that time that Alan accelerated his career journey by combining his work in the event management industry with his knowledge of innovative technologies that would eventually lead to online event registration. His job would take him around the world, rubbing elbows with celebrities at high-profile events and parties. But his favorite place has always been with his wife, Amy, whom he met as a SCUBA instructor, and their two children, who are now grown. At the Challenger Learning Center, Alan is living out a dream that includes a lifelong passion for science and space and giving back to the community. His programs serve more than 50,000 K-12 students every year and they host popular events and activities for kids of all ages.

She could absolutely be a megastar because we have historical precedent for it. In this episode, I ask my guests, Drs. James Davis & Steven Waksman, the following questions: What were music concerts like in the 19th century? Were concerts limited in size, since there was no amplification? Was music as loud as it is now? Was Jenny Lind in the 19th century a bigger star than Taylor Swift now? How was it that young people readily listened to classical music - as if it was the hottest and most popular music? When did concerts begin resembling modern concerts? What is considered popular music? Has this definition changed over time? How do we compare Taylor Swift's concert to our history of concerts? Dr. Davis is a professor of Musicology and Chair of the Music History Area at the School of Music at the State University of New York at Fredonia. In this episode… Being a business owner has its advantages, such as being your own boss, impacting the world, and the potential of high earnings. However, entrepreneurship has many trials and tribulations. Hiring personnel who meet all the necessary requirements is a common challenge for many businesses. Business leaders Andrew Gilliland and David Hunt share that successful employees fit the company culture, are excited about their job responsibilities, and work efficiently. One strategy to ensure you're hiring A-players is to conduct employee reviews every three to four months. Create an evaluation document with three metrics: effectiveness and performance, KPIs, and team culture. As business owners, time is valuable, so leadership should be comfortable delegating responsibilities. Conduct time studies to analyze which tasks require more attention, then draft standard operating procedures for those items. This may also indicate that it's time to hire specialized roles. A South Carolina man faces life in federal prison after his wife's burned body was discovered in a 'makeshift' grave in 2020," according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Lawrence Joseph Florentine, 56, has "pleaded guilty to interstate domestic violence resulting in death, use of a firearm during a crime of violence to cause death, obstruction of justice, and use of fire during the commission of a felony" over three years after his wife Nicole Zahnd Florentine's body was found "charred" with a ".22 caliber bullet wound to the head" determined to be her cause of death, per a release. The U.S. Attorney's Office noted that the two had a "volatile" relationship after marrying in 2018, citing recordings and observations from family. Since December 2019, authorities in York County responded to multiple calls from Nicole, who accused Lawrence of physically abusing her and having "threatened to kill her, burn her, and bury her." Lawrence was previously arrested twice on domestic violence charges, one of which was at least partially dismissed at Nicole's request. Then, on May 23, 2020, the couple's home in Rock Hill was "destroyed by fire," the release from the U.S. Attorney's Office noted. "Text messages and photographs Florentine sent to Nicole during the fire show that he intentionally burned her belongings and intentionally set the property on fire," the release read. "Florentine is charged with arson in state court in connection with the fire." Between June 2 and June 11 of that year, the two then traveled together by car and were last known to be in Piedmont, South Carolina, according to an FBI investigation. Nicole's grandmother reportedly filed a missing person report when she stopped hearing from her during the trip.  A body that was later identified as Nicole's was found by a groundskeeper for Hill Cemetery in Fredonia, Kentucky, on June 13, 2020. "A gas can was recovered from behind a tree near the burial site," the release notes. "No identification, cell phone, or other personal belongings were found." After eyewitnesses reported seeing a car identical to Florentine's and a hardware store clerk identified a transaction for a shovel and gas can to someone who matched Florentine's description, surveillance footage later featured Florentine filling the can at a nearby station, per the office. "No firearm was found; however, police recovered a lighter and .22 caliber cartridges in the center console and located Nicole's blood on the rear exterior of Florentine's abandoned car," the release noted. "Sometime after June 11, 2020, Florentine fled Kentucky and arrived in Denver, Colorado. On June 23, 2020, he surrendered to the Denver Police."   Florentine, who faces life in prison, also faces eight years of supervision after his sentence, and a fine of up to $250,000 restitution.  A date for sentencing has not yet been announced, and Florentine will be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Donald C. Coggins. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? And what were some of the spirited attempts to make the holiday shopping season merry for all?Special thanks to our guests: Jennifer Le Zotte, professor of history and material culture at the University of North Carolina - Wilmington; Ellen Litwicki, professor emerita at the State University of New York at Fredonia; and Paul Ringel, professor of history at High Point University and author of Commercializing Childhood.
