On today's episode I talk to musician and painter Tobin Sprout. Born in 1955 in Dayton, Ohio, Tobin is an American artist, musician and children’s book creator. As a musician, he was well known as a founding member of the indie rock band Guided by Voices before going out on his own, releasing his first solo album, Carnival Boy, in 1996. As an artist, Tobin is famous for his photo-realism large format paintings, especially the “Superchrome” series, although he does paint in other styles as well. His children’s book, Elliott, about a magician’s rabbit who finds the courage to leave his top hat, sold out of its first print run. His latest album, Empty Horses, was released late last year on Fire Records, and like everything else Tobin does, it's great! LIST-A-RAMA-A-GO-GO: "Another rattled off hit-list of equally in height fidelity." (1993-1996) Previously on 20th Century Podcast, Bob precision-picked the definitive list of impactive '90s albums. It is now one week later and they are going to do that exact same thing again, only this time it's Tim who is embarking on that middling, mid-life act of fading relevance. 00:00:00 PRE-SHOW PRATTLE -pre-show Palpatine 00:00:39 A VARIETY OF INTROS - other people’s podcasts 00:03:06 BACK ON THAT DESERT ISLAND - and how to talk about music 00:13:47 TEMPLATE FOR A BLUE BOSTONIAN - fifth on the list 00:25:25 GATEWAY TO VOICES - fourth on the list 00:30:17 MUSIC BEFORE MISERY - or it is the other way around 00:38:38 HER INDIE WORLD - third on the list 00:47:40 LET’S TALK ABOUT SEX, MAYBE - second on the list 00:57:06 SOUNDTRACKED ROMANTIC - first on the list 01:02:16 CIRCLING BACK - do these 5 albums still leave the shelf? 01:05:33 CLOSINGS - Contacts, plugs and no catchphrase 01:08:00 SPECIAL FEATURES - Bob with a blogSPOILER WARNING: For the second week in a row, these show notes risk to ruin the episode reveal of the arbitrarily chosen five album topics. If you're looking to be surprised, listen to the episode first, and then check back for some Youtube links.Learn to loathe the holiday like Tim did with this live performance of one of his favorite Aimee Mann tracks HERE.Then read as Aimee Mann discusses some of Tim's favorite topics (like Liz Phair and Boston) while making herself a cup of coffee HERE. Sway along to this performance of a song by Tobin Sprout, now old enough to get drunk on its own lyrics HEREAnd read what he thinks about being in this current century in this interview from PopDoseHERE. Witness a live street performance by Mary Lou Lord as Tim would have back in the mid 90s HERE.And then read this discussion on her one (and only) flirtation with a major label release HERE.Get neurotic with Liz Phair's first ever network television performance HERE.And then learn how her debut album is a direct response to listening to "Exile on Main Street" HERE.Catch up with Tim's all-time musical idol (Paul Westerberg) with this career spanning SPIN magazine interview HERE.And finally, to avoid any repetition with EPISODE 33's show notes, HERE's 90's era Paul Westerberg playing Tim's favorite song from the 1980s.The use of audio and video clips linked from YOUTUBE are for educational purposes and without the expressed permission of their legal holding companies. Science gets weird this week on Dread Media. First off, an expedition for a group of scientists heading to the Arctic Circle goes horribly wrong (does it ever go right?) in Harbinger Down. Rich the Monster Movie Kid continues his tribute to horror legends with birthdays in May with a look at two Vincent Price films: Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine and Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs. Devil Dinosaur Jr. delivers a brand new Stay Scary on the early talkie, Doctor X. Then Desmond and Duane look at a totally underrated classic 80s film: Dead and Buried. There are tunes, of course: "Winds from the North" by Frozen Dawn, "Cosmonaut" by At the Drive-In, "Goldfinger" by Leningrad Cowboys, "Doctor #8" by Tobin Sprout, "Bodies" by Danzig, and "Weird Science" by Oingo Boingo.
