For a few decades now, it seems like Doug Gillard is everywhere. He's the second longest tenured member of the wildly prolific Guided By Voices, behind frontman, Robert Pollard, having been in and out (mostly in) of the band since the mid-90s. He is also a long-time guitarist for alternative rock stalwarts, Nada Surf, having played with the group since 2010. His work has earned him spots on the linear notes of many of indie rock's biggest names, as he continues playing with a variety of of groups, including the early Beatles homage, Bambi Kino. Today's guest makes me wish I had written more letters. It's Eyelids' Chris Slusarenko. Not only is he the guitarist for the band, he's also a sweater enthusiast. But before any of that, he was pen pals with Peter Buck. Kind of.That was in Chris' Death Midget days. But once Death Midget ran its course, he and his brother Nate started the band Sprinkler. They signed to a pre-Nevermind Sub Pop and witnessed the explosion of grunge first-hand. Sprinkler was eventually disbanded when Chris and Nate decided they wanted a band where they had more control. So the band Svelt was next. Then came Chris' unusual solo project about Colonel Jeffery Pumpernickel. Around this time Chris started working with Robert Pollard of Guided By Voices. What a ride that has been! From The Takeovers and Boston Spaceship to actually joining Guided By Voices, Chris' relationship with Bob has yielded much fruit! It also led to the accidental band, Eyelids. Eyelids is so much fun. The new album, A Colossal Waste Of Light, follows the previous albums in its humor and awesome musicianship. It also includes Chris' longtime friend, Peter Buck. So if you like well crafted pop songs that are guitar-centric, pick up A Colossal Waste Of Light by Eyelids on Bandcamp or wherever you get music. Chris and John are veterans of the Portland music scene since the mid '80s. By the '00s, John was drumming for bands like the Decembrists, while Chris was playing bass for Guided by Voices. They recorded together as Boston Spaceships (aka The Takeovers) with GBV frontman Robert Pollard from 2005-2011 and then founded Eyelids, which has now issued 17 releases including four full albums. We discuss "Runaway, Yeah" from A Colossal Waste of Light (2023), "Seagulls Into Submission" from 854 (2014), "Shrunken Head" by Chris' band Svelt from Souvenir (1996), and we listen to "Blindfold Follies" by John's band The Maroons from You're Gonna Ruin Everything (2002) and "Ceremony" by Eyelids from The Accidental Falls (2019). This week, Dan, Mike, and Rich take a break from the usual state-of-the-art Discord & Rhyme studio, dust off the four-track, and head down to the basement with a case of beer for a no-frills chat about Guided by Voices. After percolating as 37-year-old school teacher Robert Pollard’s side hustle for over a decade, GBV (as we refer to them for 99% of the episode) suddenly found themselves on the radar of hip indie-rock tastemakers. 1994’s Bee Thousand captures this turning point for the band with a gloriously messy patchwork of 20 home-recorded songs that incorporate influences of what Pollard calls the Four P’s of Rock: prog, psych, pop, and punk. Jam along with us to these lo-fi anthems, and try to not pull a muscle while imitating Pollard’s signature stage kicks. (Rated Explicit for occasional naughty language.) On today's episode I talk to musician Jason Narducy. Jason began his rock career at the age of ten when he co-founded the band Verböten – one of the seminal acts in the Chicago punk scene. He then went on to become frontman/songwriter/guitarist for Verbow, another beloved Windy City outfit who signed a major-label deal with Epic/Sony during the ‘90s alt-rock bubble and followed that up with an ongoing, nearly decade-long run as indie-rock's secret weapon – serving as bassist and backing vocalist for indie-underground icons like Bob Mould, Robert Pollard of Guided by Voices, Telekinesis and Superchunk. In 2011, Jason started writing his own music again as Split Single, with Spoon's Britt Daniel and Superchunk's Jon Wurster as his backing band. He's released two albums as Split Single, Fragmented World in 2014 and his latest Metal Frames, which is just lovely. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
