1994 studio album by Beastie Boys
POPULARITY
Ill Communication, released in 1994, marked a high point for the Beastie Boys, blending their signature irreverent style with genre-hopping experimentation. The album saw the trio—Mike D, MCA, and Ad-Rock—seamlessly fuse hardcore punk, jazz-funk, and old-school hip-hop, with the standout single “Sabotage” becoming an anthem of the era. Its explosive bassline, distorted guitars, and aggressive delivery captured the Beasties at their rawest and most innovative. At the same time, tracks like “Sure Shot” and “Root Down” paid homage to their b-boy roots with tight rhymes and slick DJ work from Mix Master Mike. The album wasn't just about sonic chaos—it carried deeper, more mature undertones, reflecting MCA's growing interest in Buddhism and activism. For many fans—and clearly for us here at Totally 80's and 90's Recall—Ill Communication stands as a definitive '90s album that refused to be boxed in. It's wild, funny, political, and endlessly replayable. From punk mosh pits to chill jazz instrumentals like “Sabrosa,” the Beastie Boys proved they weren't just rap pranksters from the '80s—they were legit musical craftsmen. The album captured the eclectic energy of the decade and the spirit of reinvention that defined the Beasties' career. Whether you're blasting “Sabotage” in your car or grooving to the funky vibes of “Flute Loop,” this one hits as hard now as it did in ‘94.

Can you remember when Ill Communication first came out? If you came of age in the 90's like me, it was a huge album. Bursting outta the gates with 'Sure Shot', with hits like 'Get it Together' and 'Sabotage'... it's one of Beastie Boys most varied and loved albums, and in 2024 it turns 30 years old.The sound of this album is as fresh as it was in 1994, and to mark this big anniversary I dug into the archives to dust off one of my favourite conversations of all time.

We're speeding away at breakneck speed with another installment of our That Was Then series. This time Paul and Arlo are witnesses to The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, a 1974 subway heist thriller that is exactly what it says on the tin. Not that there's anything wrong with that! But our boys do struggle to find much to say, choosing to highlight David Shire's jazz-funk score and Owen Roizman's gritty cinematography while mostly being puzzled by the script's wasted potential. It's a fun Noo Yawk movie, and that's okay, folks! NEXT: NO FUCKING MERLOT! That's right, it's another That Was Then, this time focusing on Alexander Payne's 2004 buddy dramedy Sideways. What makes an album perfect? No skippable songs? A front to back cohesive listen? An emotional through line? The answer lies in the ear of the beholder. We each make the argument for five that we think are perfect tens. Episode 308, featuring tracks from Bouncing Souls, Ill Communication, Alex Hellcat, BLVD Bullies, Fighting For Scraps, xWEAPONx, World of Pleasure, Detrition, Obituary, and Everclear. We play a lot of new music, discuss live shows, Eric goes into depth on a vegan straight edge split EP, and wrap up the show with some new Metal and classic Alternative.
I think what we're realizing with A to Z is that having your characters go through relatable and funny scenarios can be very fun, but it doesn't bolster up what is otherwise a pretty dull series. It's a shame, because these episodes have moments that spark joy or interest. But that's part of the fun of Thirteen Under 13, right? They literally cannot all be winners. And so it goes.Magellan's Substack newsletter: https://notthatmagellan.substack.com/Check out chatzpod.com for all things Chatzpod!TwitterRedditTwitchChatzumsEmail: chatzpod@gmail.comOur main podcast feed art was done by Camilla Franklin, whose work can be found at https://camillafranklin.myportfolio.com/

Your Heard Tell for Tuesday, 25 October, 2022 is turning down the noise of the news cycle and getting to the information we to discern the times we live in by getting to how communication and messaging is the core of politics, but is so badly handled and misunderstood by so many from the White House to the commentariat online. With Rishi Sunak the new UK Prime Minister, we review our chat with Lettice Bromovsky from during the Conservative Party leadership race on who he is, where he came from, and what to expect from his premiership. Our guest today is attorney and public defender Zeke Webster who returns to Heard Tell to talk about how crime and "law & order" get politicized during an election cycle, turning down the noise on buzzwords and getting to what is really going on in the criminal justice system, and sticky trending topics like bail reform, alternative sentencing, and how the justice system is making more criminals than it is deterring. Plus, we update that Rocky Horror Picture Show story out in Colorado, with a surprising, in-person twist that shows what a small world it really is.All that and more on this Tuesday Edition of Heard Tell--------------------Questions, comments, concerns, ideas, or epistles? It's 1994 and the Beastie Boys drop their fourth studio album which explodes on the scene with a unforgettable music video by Spike Jonze for Sabotage. It really is the decade where anything is possible, and in this episode we talk about why Ill Communication is the perfect sequel to Check Your Head. Through art and activism, we witnessed the Beastie boys become Beastie men.
"I'm tellin' y'all, it's a sabotage!" We're thrilled to discuss our memories and stories connected to the Beastie Boys and "Sabotage," including what it was like to have the good fortune of seeing them play multiple times, what the surprising process of creating "Sabotage" was like, MCA's legacy, and which Beastie Boy Stephanie P. ran into on the train on the way to their show. On the way, we talk about attending recent hip hop shows, including Arrested Development, Tone Loc, and Color Me Badd. Enjoying the show?
