Go follow my IG @thiswasthescene Gob is a Canadian punk rock band formed in 1993 in Langley, British Columbia, known for their high-energy sound and catchy melodies. They gained mainstream success in the early 2000s with hits like “I Hear You Calling” and “Give Up the Grudge,” blending skate-punk vibes with alternative rock appeal. Gob's relentless touring and fun-loving attitude earned them a loyal fanbase and a lasting spot in Canada's punk legacy. With members spread across Connecticut and Western Massachusetts, New England quintet Arms Like Roses play a blend of emo, indie rock, and post-hardcore that alternates between lush beauty and cathartic harshness just like the seasons do in the region they call home. With a sound harkening back to the ‘90s and early 2000s influenced by acts like Sunny Day Real Estate, mewithoutYou, Circa Survive, and Tigers Jaw, ALR made their debut in 2021 with the EP “Get Some Sleep”; they followed it up the next year with their Chris Teti (TWIABP)-produced first LP “Blooming”, which saw the band complete several east coast and Midwest tours and receive praise from press outlets like No Echo and The Alternative. The “I”s have it! And Lightnin' Licks Radio has the “I”s. Ten of them to be exact. Jay and Deon discuss their favorite vinyl records filed under the letter I. It's intimate and intense. It's immersive and inspiring though, ironically, they're idiots.--In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, idiotic, introverted award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming thirty-fifth episode. When Scott and William Goldsmith first met in 1993, Local H and Sunny Day Real Estate were sharing a bill at the Avalon in Chicago (RIP). The next day, Sunny Day went into Idful studios with Brad Wood and started recording one of the best and (turns out) most influential indie-rock records of the ‘90s. Who knew? On this episode we talk to Will about Sub Pop, Neil Peart, Emo, hardcore, walking away, coming back, being in a band as a child versus being in a band as an adult, Will's brother Brian, Will's band Assertion, Greg Suran, Lionel Ritchie, and then we pick the best music from David Lynch movies. You see them on stage every night – the musicians whose names are buried in the liner notes and driven by passion rather than by rockstar-dom. Franz Nicolay calls them “band people,” and for his new book, he interviewed over 60 of these session musicians, backup singers, and instrumentalists. They share stories about the realities of band life and what Nicolay considers a unique collaboration that exists somewhere between a family, a romance, a small business and a gang. His book is called “Band People: Life and Work In Popular Music.” Who are some of your favorite unsung musicians? Guests: Franz Nicolay, musician and writer Jason Narducy, musician; has performed in Bob Mould Band, Superchunk, Sunny Day Real Estate, Split Single, and Verböten
Today on the podcast, we welcome sunny day real estate. Jeremy Enigk, William Goldsmith, and Dan Hoerner recently took time to chat with me ahead of this run around the anniversary of Diary. I didn't edit it. I just talk to them as you would if you got to sit with them for an hour. I hope you feel you're next to them, chiming in or nodding along. i can't explain listening back to this the joy I feel hearing them all happy. This is a celebration. A band so cherished and revered is better than they were when you say you saw them first. Go see them now. I can't explain how much getting 250 episodes feels, either. I can try, but through many ups and downs, as I'm sure you have going on now, in the past, or up ahead, it felt right to have this happen now. I struggle a lot with keeping up, and I struggle with thinking no one cares. This past year, I spent a lot of time looking for support in those ups and downs. Hearing SDRE laugh, talk over each other, remind each other of things, and support each other as they go down this road of not nostalgia but celebration and continuation of a band that goes beyond a word, a phase, or even a scene. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to Jeremy, William, and Dan for coming on and sharing a little about themselves. I hope you enjoy listening along with all the mistakes, my usual questions about emo. I think 250 in, I am not changing the format, there are plenty more stories to hear from our heroes, here's to 250 more. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Dustin returns again to take on one of the albums that has been one of the most influential in he and Travis's lives-- Sunny Day Real Estate's monumental classic Diary. The two talk the album, its impact on the emo genre in particular, and their undying love for it.
Sunny Day Real Estate came out of the hardcore scene in Seattle in the 90s and eventually became a major influence on “emo” music. KEXP's Dusty Henry talks with guitarist Dan Hoerner and drummer William Goldsmith about the band's history, their take on "emo," their recent reunion tour, and the re-release of their 1994 debut album, 'Diary.'Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This season we discuss over 300 albums of the 1990s selected from https://besteveralbums.com. The show starts at (1:37). The Six Singles segment starts at (6:31). This episode covers the following albums: Mary J. Blige - My Life (40:38), Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary (1:04:45), Digable Planets - Blowout Comb (1:34:56), and Pearl Jam - Vitalogy (1:56:14).
In this episode, we talk with Ian, Elijah, Tegan, and Mer from Headless Mary. I had a fantastic chat with the band about how they got started (including the story on their name) as well as chatting about their last album called Death Is A Moving Target. If you love music that touches that vibe of bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and Hum, then Headless Mary is for you. We talked about songwriting, influences, music we are listening to, and our mutual infatuation with Radiohead. Along the way, we of course had to talk about pizza. Their latest single “Park Place” will be on their new album called Pyres which comes out on Friday, August 23. You can pre-save over on Spotify. They will be celebrating the record release on Friday, August 23 at the Sanctuary in Hamtramck with Central Dogma (a future guest on Fans With Bands) who also have a new album coming. Opening the show is Saving Throw and Living AI. I highly recommend going to this show and getting the new Headless Mary album. For the 30th anniversary of Sunny Day Real Estate's iconic debut album, DIARY, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Dan Hoerner and Nate Mendel began playing music together in Seattle in 1992, they asked William Goldsmith to join on drums, despite the fact that he was already playing in three other bands at the time. When Mendel went on tour with another band, they asked Goldsmith's high school friend Jeremy Enigk to jam with them. Enigk took over lead vocal duties from Hoerner and when Mendel returned, they decided to continue as a four-piece. In 1993, they played what was only their second show as Sunny Day Real Estate when Jonathan Poneman saw them and immediately signed them to a deal with Sub Pop. Embarking on their first cross country tour, they landed in Chicago at Idful Studios to record with producer Brad Wood. Their debut album, DIARY, was eventually released in 1994. In this episode, Jeremy Enigk, Dan Hoerner and William Goldsmith describe the circumstances of how they first came together and the unique sound they stumbled upon. Goldsmith talks about initially being courted by Hoerner and Mendel after they saw him playing in punk bands around town, and how he learned to adapt his hardcore-influenced drumming style to suit the music they were creating. Hoerner describes taking an experimental approach early on, focusing on drones, feedback and open spaces, contrasting with heavy riffs that were more common in the grunge scene in Seattle at the time. Enigk talks about bringing more of a pop element into the group and how his early acoustic work as a solo artist informed the dynamic music he wanted to create with Sunny Day Real Estate. From the unlikely marriage of a punk band recording with Brad Wood to a grueling tour that led to Enigk's shredded vocals to taking inspiration from Fugazi, Treepeople, R.E.M., U2 and The Beatles to inserting triumphant hugeness into emotionally heavy songs to a high school relationship that informed the heartbroken lyrics, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.
This week we discuss the music of May 1994! The Eagles were charging over $100 per concert ticket while Pearl Jam went to war with Ticketmaster for better ticket prices. We take a left turn and talk about going to Mars before talking about Sunny Day Real Estate, The Beastie Boys, Weezer and The Lion King Soundtrack.

A lot's going on in the world of Saosin right now. They're gearing up to release Live From The Garden Amphitheater, a live album recorded at their 2023 20th anniversary shows with both lead vocalists (Anthony Green and Cove Reber) that includes a full performance of their debut EP Translating The Name, covers (of Sunny Day Real Estate, At the Drive-In, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Blindside), and more; they have a re-recorded “Saosin's Version” of their self-titled album on the way in order to give the album a long-awaited vinyl re-release (due to rights issues with Capitol Records); they're about to go on their first tour with Cove in 14 years; and they have new music in the works. Send Santa's sleighbells to the chimney object of course! Brad talked about recording awesome drums, creating your own snare and kick samples, how to get a great kick drum sound, how to capture a guitar DI without the buzz, and mixing 9.1.4 in Atmos. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Brad Wood, a producer originally from Chicago where he had Idful Music Corporation - a small but mighty recording studio in Wicker Park. There he recorded albums by bands like Seam, Tar, Shrimp Boat and Eleventh Dream Day. In 1993 he produced Exile In Guyville for Liz Phair which became the catalyst for what became a very long and prosperous career as a producer and mixer. Brad wrapped up the 90's with many debut albums under his belt, including Sunny Day Real Estate‘s Diary, Veruca Salt‘s American Thighs, Placebo's self-titled LP, Placebo, and Ben Lee‘s Grandpaw Would. He also notably produced the Original Broadway Cast Recording for Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Throughout the iconic decade, Brad also worked with bands such as Far, that dog., Menthol, Pete Yorn, and The Smashing Pumpkins' Adore (which peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 charts). Later Brad relocated to Los Angeles, California, where he built Seagrass Studio where he's tracked and mixed for Say Anything, mewithoutyou, The Bangles, Sherwood, Touché Amoré, and many other artists. Saying goodbye to a simpler age, we step into a vibrant discussion about Paul and the Tall Trees, whose music has the swagger of a Tarantino score. It's a reflection of times when discovery was a live, unmediated thrill—a reminder of the sheer joy of stumbling upon a new favorite sound in a crowded room. From there, we orbit around the Pitchfork readers' choice of the 200 best albums, an odyssey through time that resurrects the ghosts of CDs past and the tactile allure of vinyl. Brian, the artistic genius behind our branding, gets his due as we fold in tales of personal endurance, like the cathartic slog of half marathons, and the changes life throws our way.The heart of our chat beats to the rhythm of a heated debate over music rankings, where the fervor of Pearl Jam's fanbase clashes with the subjective nature of rating art. We explore the hip-hop landscape, tipping our hats to Kendrick Lamar's genius while admitting our hearts still beat strongest for the '90s classics. The strains of The Strokes echo through our conversation on the NYC indie scene, and we're not shy about questioning the scarcity of groundbreaking female artists in those top album lists. The raw emotion of Radiohead's 'In Rainbows' sweeps us up in a discussion that's as much about the resonance of music as it is about cultural critique. As the episode winds down, we swerve into a contemplative lane, musing on the emotional heft of albums like David Bowie's 'Blackstar', and the enduring anthems of the White Stripes, which seem to transcend time itself. With an eye on the rearview mirror, we reminisce about cult films like "Mallrats" and their quirky soundtracks, before I share a slice of my world—from the thrill of live music to the personal challenges and triumphs of marathon running. So, whether you're jogging to the beat or simply soaking in the soundscapes, join us, Anthony and the ever-talented Brian, for an episode that dances through the cultural fabric of our lives.www.TheTouringFanLive.commedia@TheTouringFanLive.Comwww.facebook.com/TheTouringFanLiveInstagram-@TheTouringFanLiveCopyright The Touring Fan Live 2022

In the latest episode of Columbia House Party, hosts Jake Goldsbie and Blake Murphy trace the so-called emo tree back up almost all the way to the top, exploring the definitive parent of the Midwest emo branch, Sunny Day Real Estate's 1994 album Diary. It stands to reason that if you listen to this podcast, a lot of the bands you enjoy (and episodes we've done to date) were influenced by Diary, as SDRE genuinely helped move the genre forward. Find out more about why SDRE couldn't sustain their success through some fault of their own, which of our hosts' favourite bands today draw influence from Diary, and where the Foo Fighters come in on this week's podcast. The “I”s have it! And Lightnin' Licks Radio has the “I”s. Ten of them to be exact. Jay and Deon discuss their favorite vinyl records filed under the letter I. It's intimate and intense. It's immersive and inspiring though, ironically, they're idiots. -- In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For nearly one half of a century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, idiotic, introverted award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming thirty-fifth episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably good solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru H, so naturally, they went with I. Jason Narducy has carved out quite a career for himself in music. His first band, Verboten (which he began as a pre-teen), was influential in getting Dave Grohl in started music. Subsequently he formed the acoustic duo Jason & Alison, Verbow, Rockets Over Sweden and his current project, Split Single. He's also played with or toured with the likes of Bob Mould, Superchunk, Sunny Day Real Estate, Robert Pollard, Eddie Vedder, Liz Phair, The Pretenders and more. He's got some big 2024 plans, including a tour booked with Michael Shannon where they perform R.E.M.'s Murmur album.Time stamps:2: We are here with Chicago music lifer Jason Narducy3:30: How did you like growing up in Evanston?4:32: What are some of your earliest Chicago music memories?6:15: When did you decide you wanted to learn music?8: How old were you when you formed your first band?11: Are you surprised you are still talking about Verboten?15:30: Were you aware of how unique the music scene was in Chicago in the 90s?17:22: How did you happen in to what you are doing?23: May I ask you for a top Bob Pollard story?30:50: How do you decide your next project?33:45: What musician has been the most influential for you?37: Are you constantly evolving with what you are doing with Split Single?40:40: Have you been surprised by the response to your Michael Shannon Murmur collaboration?47:44: How did you end up getting into the Sunny Day Real Estate orbit?53:30: Deep dish or thin crust pizza fan?54:45: Favorite venue to see a show at, and favorite venue to play?60:50: What is your go to cheap drink?61:45: Are you a Chicago lifer?
Welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions with Jason P. Woodbury. We're kicking off our 2024 season with two very special guests: Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy, discussing their love of and tribute to R.E.M.'s Murmur, which they are taking on tour in February. You no doubt know Shannon from his movies and shows, including some of our favorites like Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Midnight Special, The Shape of Water, and Boardwalk Empire. In his essential read Every Man For Himself and God Against All, director Werner Herzog calls Shannon “the most gifted actor of his generation.” As for Narducy, you've heard him with Superchunk, Bob Mould, Split Single, and many other projects. Together, they've staged tributes to T. Rex, The Smiths, Lou Reed, and Neil Young and more, and now, they turn their attention to R.E.M. It was a pleasure to speak with these two about the Athens, Georgia legends, along with detours into topics like Lou Reed, Sunny Day Real Estate, and best of all, Michael's run in with Bob Dylan. Episode 170 of Third Gear Scratch, in which our hero, Alien Epilepsy waxes and wanes about this year of our Lord, Two Thousand and Twenty Three. It's been a year of triumphs and struggles which has seen AE release his first and only solo record 'Everything' (Spartan) and tour on it, create a new record with his band Shiner, their 6th, tour with his friend Ian Prince and their band Birdhands with amazing bands Russian Circles, Spotlights, Jawbox and Pelican. But it was in the mother of all coup attempts that saw AE join Sunny Day Real Estate onstage in the role of guitarist in his friend Greg Suran's absence for 10 shows this summer and fall of '23. Growing older as an artist presents its own challenges and those showed up this year too. However, it is the continued support from the Third Gear Scratch faithful that give so much back and help to steady the ship for this long-time artist and maker of things. Huzzah!!
Jordan Butcher is an Art Director and Photographer that goes by Strange Practice. I first knew about Jordan's work at the beach when I was drinking out of my friend's hot to go mug from Minnows NYC. I thought this logo was sick and have to go to this bar but who did this logo? Lo and behold it was Jordan's and made me go into a deep dive of previous work. Jordan has been Grammy nominated for his work on the Caspian record ‘On Circles' for Best Recording Package, he's worked with my favorite bands growing up such as Thrice, Minus The Bear, Converge, and Sunny Day Real Estate. Jordan has also did the branding for Pals, Dallas Green from City and Colour's brand which somehow happened to be my top listened artist on Spotify wrapped. Let's get strange. This is a pre-pandemic revisit to a previous episode from Aug 9, 2019 in which touring and session guitarist Greg Suran visited the TGS studios to talk about his globe-trotting experiences playing in his own Chicago-based band Cupcakes and BlueManGroup before joining The B-52's in which he still enjoys frequent gigs. He later joined Sunny Day Real Estate for their last two studio albums and subesequent tours, and has worked since that time steadily as a session player with the likes of Joe Walsh and Don Felder of the Eagles. He later was asked to join the house band on the set of the American Idol TV show, and most recently has enjoyed a long touring stint with the legendary Lionel Richie. His revisit to the TGS studio here is relevant because since he's been busy with Lionel, Greg was kind enough to ask your host AE to fill in for him in SDRE so it's a great recap with a man who's made music his life and his experiences have forged a human with a rich DNA tapestry.
Before changing their name to Diffuser and scoring a couple of hits in the early 00s, the long island quartet Flu Thirteen banged out jagged post-hardcore riffs and rhythms on par with bands of the time. Getting producer J. Robbins, whose work in the 90s on albums by Braid, Texas Is The Reason, The Promise Ring, and many more helped define the late 90s indie rock sound, was a perfect match to help refine and define the band's sound. On their 1998 album In The Foul Key of V, the band unleashes a steady stream of dynamic arrangements, shifting between blazing dissonance and subdued restraint that occasionally recalls the valleys of Sunny Day Real Estate. After a brief three-year absence, Bumbershoot Arts & Music Festival is making its grand return for its 50th Anniversary. Taking place Sept 2 and 3 in Seattle, this unique Arts-forward music festival celebrates inclusivity and community, and we've got festival organizers Steven Severin and James Miles to talk to us about the focus and determination it takes to present an event on such a grand scale. An esteemed local venue owner, Steven is the Co-President of festival producer New Rising Sun and James, aka Fresh Professor -- a career educator with a novel approach -- is the Executive Director of Third Stone, the non-profit arts and education arm of Bumbershoot. This dynamic duo have set forth to bring a decidedly local flavor to a festival that also features major musical acts this year such as Sleater-Kinney, Sunny Day Real Estate, Brittany Howard, The Revivalists, Durand Jones and Fatboy Slim, among others. "Celebrating what it means to be an artist," Steve and James talk about how important it is to not only entertain the audience, but to support the community and make music and the arts not only accessible to all, but how to embed the concept of inclusivity into a long-standing community-based festival. It's a wonderful new era for Bumbershoot and we are here for it. So join us for this special episode and learn more about this impressive and exciting festival as we venture into the Great Northwest for the 50th Anniversary edition of the Bumbershoot Arts & Music Festival. It's gonna be a great ride!!

Spirit Award - Pushing Forward from the 2023 album The Fear on Share It Music. Seattle's Spirit Award, the project of Daniel Lyon and currently with Chris Jordan of Sunny Day Real Estate on bass, has been fine-tuning his brand of doom-filled psychedelic indie for over seven years now, with his upcoming fourth studio album The Fear destined to be one of his best. While they may only have one single out, it's an incredibly strong one and shows that Spirit Award are only getting better. “Pushing Forward” is a psychedelic journey into the recesses of the mind that technically refers to drugs but can be taken to a larger level. Unlike the long journey that drugs often take a mind through, the song breezes by with its layers of dreamy guitar play. While the song specifically references the paranoia post-drugs that requires one to either succumb to the fear or push forward through it, it has deeper layers for Lyon. “This idea for this song came about at a time of growth and realization, during some sleepless nights,” explains Lyon. “I had so many things getting thrown my way throughout my musical career; Vans getting broken into, gear stolen, rehearsal space getting robbed, identity getting stolen, van getting stolen, health problems, and most of all financial problems. The worst of all these has been a post-pandemic landscape which has changed how bands tour and put out music and try to make a living doing so. This has not only affected musicians but also music venues. Throughout all this, as a person and as a musician, I have always tried to keep ‘pushing forward'. So this song became a motivation to do so and sort of a rallying cry for our music community. I am thankful to have had the support of MusiCares and friends that helped me through a journey of growth and discovery. And knowing that no matter how low things get, there is hope.” The Fear is out May 19th via Share It Music. The video for “Pushing Forward” sees Lyon traverse a wild night helmed by some mystically masked characters and is directed by Seattle's Eric Luck. Sure, if crying was an Olympic team sport then maybe it would have been theoretically possible for Sunny Day Real Estate to do something that mattered. But even if crying was an Olympic team sport then Sunny Day Real Estate would still need to have been able to remain a team long enough to get to the competition and there is just no way that would ever have happened. Now, is it this band's fault so many clueless tryhards have thought and said so many idiotic things about their work and legacy? Of course not. Does that mean we're going to be nice about it? Of course not. Sunny Day Real Estate sucks and it's time to talk about all of the reasons why. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/yfbspod/message
