It's good fun for the dork in me this week as we're dropping a palindrome episode, and I couldn't be happier than to share that Brian Hurtgen joined me for the 212th installment of the program.Brian is a son, a sibling, a parent, a partner, and a wearer of many band hats.We talked family, musicianship, band life and the learning curve that sometimes comes with it. We also talked about life, death, and being a sage person as you walk the path.Brian's outfits include Major Matt Mason USA, Holiday at Sea, The Creepy Jingles, and Bye American. You can find stuff from each of those bands on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, and I Heart Radio, and you can also find some solo material of his on those platforms. In addition to all of that, we had a peek at a few of Brian's favorite albums, which were these:Siamese Dream (1993), The Smashing PumpkinsRadiohead's The Bends (1995)LP2 (1995), Sunny Day Real Estate*Starflyer 59's The Fashion Focus (1998)Low Level Owl, Vol. 1 + 2 (2011), The Appleseed CastMeeting Brian was a treat, and sharing time with him for some quality conversation was a privilege.Oh, and don't forget to check out Brian's pop-up record store, BlacKCat Vinyl. The store's Instagram handle is @blackcatvinylkc; Brian's page is @waxmusic79.In my fumbling preparation efforts, I completely overlooked the Sunny Day Real Estate record, and we therefore did not discuss it on the show. My apologies to both Brian and S.D.R.E.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. They are clips from a Delegation track called, "Oh Honey" from 1978, c/o State Records.
This week we have the good fortune to be talking dogs with Jason Narducy. The singer, songwriter, bassist, guitarist and author who's played with Bob Mould, Superchunk, Sunny Day Real Estate and the attention grabbing tours covering classic R.E.M. albums with actor Michael Shannon. Jason introduces us to his 6 year old brindled American Staffordshire Terrier Juniper who came into his family a year after losing their Black Lab Zoey. Jason recently took Juniper on tour so we dig into what that experience was like, the routine they developed that benefitted them both and much, much more. Fun talk from a great storyteller.Jason gave a unique and thoughtful shout out to Prairie Wolf and Pooch Park. Prairie Wolf is open daily from 6:30am to sunset and is one of five designated off-leash dog areas within the Lake County Forest Preserves. For more info visit lcfpd.orgPooch Park is open daily from 5am to 10pm and is Skokie's only off-leash dog park providing a unique outdoor green space for dogs with more than 2.7 acres of open area. "Under a hood" is an old school wrestling term that means working under a mask. The mask is a big part of pro wrestling, especially in lucha libre where it is sacred. Some songs have their own masks, so to speak, in that the titles are not found anywhere in the lyrics. On this episode, Andrew and returning guest Rich Kraetsch (Voices of Wrestling) play songs that fall into that category. Artists played include Third Eye Blind, Kasabian, Massive Attack, Little Brother, Public Image Ltd., Sunny Day Real Estate, Faith No More, and many more.

In this week's episode, we dust off our iPods and XM boomboxes to travel back to the decade where many claimed that rock n' roll was dead and that there was no more good music. That's right; we are listening to obscure tracks from George W.'s Y2K! Join us on this journey back through the decade of iTunes, MySpace, autotune, and some really great rock n' punk n' metal!New to InObscuria? It's all about digging up obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode, we talk about the lost and forgotten gems of the 00s. A decade where the ideas of record companies, albums, physical product, and the old way of promoting artists were all challenged. This decade literally changed the path for how music was to be consumed going forward.Songs this week include:Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – “Six Barrel Shotgun” from Take Them On Your Own(2003)Flickerstick – “Girls & Pills” from Tarantula (2004) Totimoshi – “Milagrosa” from Milagrosa (2008)Hey Mercedes – “Everybody's Working For The Weak” from The Weekend EP (2002)Hurt – “Pandora” from Goodbye To The Machine (2009)The Soundtrack Of Our Lives – “Sister Surround” from Behind The Music (2001)The Anniversary – “Crooked Crown” from Your Majesty (2002)The Cooper Temple Clause – “Promises Promises” from Kick Up The Fire, And Let The Flames Break Loose (2003)Big Jack Pneumatic – “Mainstream” from Half-Ass Cool (EP) (2003) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria StoreVisit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/

Every Now and Zen I wax a little existential on here; doing so at least gets in the neighborhood of scratching that writer itch.Daylight Savings has been over for a bit, and I think we're all still adjusting to it getting dark at 5:00 (soon to be 4:30), bracing for the holidays, and stirring the miniature marshmallows of emotion into the cocoa that is the forthcoming cold.I have a fat bundle of youth basketball games to look forward to watching to, and the last week or so with my high-school-freshman daughter has been decent, better perhaps than it was at the end of October, so that's where my focus is attempting to be right now: on the positive. On that note, I continue to be excited about the podcast continuing to roll in the direction of its 200th episode, and this week's was a bunch of fun.Chris Clark of Blue Oyster Culture Club (as well as Sisters of...) joined me for Episode No. 191, and I really enjoyed getting to know him and talking about his experiences growing up, making pals for life, joining bands, and making music. We also had a look at a few of Chris' favorite albums. Those were these:Led Zeppelin IV (1971)Season to Risk's self-titled debut (1993)Sunny Day Real Estate's Diary (1994)Show (1994), The Jesus LizardSigur Rós' () (2002)Find Chris on Facebook or Instagram (@beerdedclark) to keep tabs on all things B.O.C.C., and find the two Sisters of... releases on Apple Music or Spotify. Thanks to Mr. Clark for making the trek down to K.C. from St. Joe, and props to all of you that support the show.Note: Bill Brownlee's other Web site is called There Stands the Glass; I called it something else by mistake during my conversation with Chris.copyright disclaimer: I used snippets of Robert Plant's "Big Log," for this episode, and they're not mine; I own zero rights to them. It's a cut from his 1983 release, Principle of Moments. Plant came up in our conversation, and was very much on the brain once I hit that portion of the episode edit. So, I quickly poked at Plant's solo hits looking for this one, and when I found it I remembered that I've always found the name to be stupid. Until a few moments ago when I glanced at the song's Wikipedia page:"'Big Log' was written in the middle of winter. We'd run out of fuel for the fire. We found the remains of an old tree lying outside, which was about 15 feet long, but had nothing to cut it with. So we put one end in the fire and slowly burnt it, till it was hollow."And now I love the name. Kudos to guitarist Robbie Blunt for writing some super-fantastic licks for this tune. Timeless.

In February 2025 at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia, something incredible happened. Jason Narducy, alongside actor Michael Shannon, were out touring their R.E.M. tribute project, where they perform early albums in full, alongside deep cuts from the back catalogue, when all 4 original members of R.E.M joined them to perform a version of “Pretty Persuasion”. Over the past couple of years various configurations of band members had performed with them, but having all 4 at once was clearly a historic moment. Jason's life in music has been quite something. Jason had a musical epiphany when, aged 8, his dad took him to see The Who movie “The Kids Are Alright”. He got an electric guitar aged 9, and by aged 10 he was playing in a punk band named Verboten. Tracey, was the oldest member of the band, aged 13, and just happened to be cousin of future Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl. Dave would later cite Verboten as a major inspiration for him in pursuing music, and Jason appeared in Dave's “Sonic Highways” series. Jason has gone on to perform with so many artists, but he's been a mainstay of Bob Mould's band since 2005, playing bass on 6 albums and touring with him. Jason also plays with bands such as Sunny Day Real Estate and Superchunk. He has his own musical project entitled Split Single, and plays intimate living room shows for fans. A few years ago he had the surreal experience of writing songs for a musical about his childhood band Verboten. As well as upcoming gigs with Bob Mould, Jason is heading back out on tour with Michael Shannon to perform R.E.M's brilliant 4th album, “Life's Rich Pageant”. It's no surprise we had a lot to talk about. Instagram: @sendingsignalspodcast

Bert McCracken from The Used shares 5 songs that 'got him through'.The frontman and founding member of The Used found his tribe through music, and he's gathered a huge community of fans over the last 25 years. It's the occasion of that quarter century that's taking them around the world, to play out their first three albums in full night after night. It's why I invited Bert to Take 5. His music has helped so many people overcome the hardest of times, you can see people's faces and memories as they sing back the classics to their favourite band… and I wanted to know about the songs that got him through. With members spread across Connecticut and Western Massachusetts, New England quintet Arms Like Roses play a blend of emo, indie rock, and post-hardcore that alternates between lush beauty and cathartic harshness just like the seasons do in the region they call home. With a sound harkening back to the ‘90s and early 2000s influenced by acts like Sunny Day Real Estate, mewithoutYou, Circa Survive, and Tigers Jaw, ALR made their debut in 2021 with the EP “Get Some Sleep”; they followed it up the next year with their Chris Teti (TWIABP)-produced first LP “Blooming”, which saw the band complete several east coast and Midwest tours and receive praise from press outlets like No Echo and The Alternative. The “I”s have it! And Lightnin' Licks Radio has the “I”s. Ten of them to be exact. Jay and Deon discuss their favorite vinyl records filed under the letter I. It's intimate and intense. It's immersive and inspiring though, ironically, they're idiots.--In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, idiotic, introverted award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming thirty-fifth episode. When Scott and William Goldsmith first met in 1993, Local H and Sunny Day Real Estate were sharing a bill at the Avalon in Chicago (RIP). The next day, Sunny Day went into Idful studios with Brad Wood and started recording one of the best and (turns out) most influential indie-rock records of the ‘90s. Who knew? On this episode we talk to Will about Sub Pop, Neil Peart, Emo, hardcore, walking away, coming back, being in a band as a child versus being in a band as an adult, Will's brother Brian, Will's band Assertion, Greg Suran, Lionel Ritchie, and then we pick the best music from David Lynch movies. Silencio!

You see them on stage every night – the musicians whose names are buried in the liner notes and driven by passion rather than by rockstar-dom. Franz Nicolay calls them “band people,” and for his new book, he interviewed over 60 of these session musicians, backup singers, and instrumentalists. They share stories about the realities of band life and what Nicolay considers a unique collaboration that exists somewhere between a family, a romance, a small business and a gang. His book is called “Band People: Life and Work In Popular Music.” Who are some of your favorite unsung musicians? Guests: Franz Nicolay, musician and writer Jason Narducy, musician; has performed in Bob Mould Band, Superchunk, Sunny Day Real Estate, Split Single, and Verböten
Today on the podcast, we welcome sunny day real estate. Jeremy Enigk, William Goldsmith, and Dan Hoerner recently took time to chat with me ahead of this run around the anniversary of Diary. I didn't edit it. I just talk to them as you would if you got to sit with them for an hour. I hope you feel you're next to them, chiming in or nodding along. i can't explain listening back to this the joy I feel hearing them all happy. This is a celebration. A band so cherished and revered is better than they were when you say you saw them first. Go see them now. I can't explain how much getting 250 episodes feels, either. I can try, but through many ups and downs, as I'm sure you have going on now, in the past, or up ahead, it felt right to have this happen now. I struggle a lot with keeping up, and I struggle with thinking no one cares. This past year, I spent a lot of time looking for support in those ups and downs. Hearing SDRE laugh, talk over each other, remind each other of things, and support each other as they go down this road of not nostalgia but celebration and continuation of a band that goes beyond a word, a phase, or even a scene. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to Jeremy, William, and Dan for coming on and sharing a little about themselves. I hope you enjoy listening along with all the mistakes, my usual questions about emo. I think 250 in, I am not changing the format, there are plenty more stories to hear from our heroes, here's to 250 more. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Dustin returns again to take on one of the albums that has been one of the most influential in he and Travis's lives-- Sunny Day Real Estate's monumental classic Diary. The two talk the album, its impact on the emo genre in particular, and their undying love for it.
Sunny Day Real Estate came out of the hardcore scene in Seattle in the 90s and eventually became a major influence on “emo” music. KEXP's Dusty Henry talks with guitarist Dan Hoerner and drummer William Goldsmith about the band's history, their take on "emo," their recent reunion tour, and the re-release of their 1994 debut album, 'Diary.'Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This season we discuss over 300 albums of the 1990s selected from https://besteveralbums.com. The show starts at (1:37). The Six Singles segment starts at (6:31). This episode covers the following albums: Mary J. Blige - My Life (40:38), Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary (1:04:45), Digable Planets - Blowout Comb (1:34:56), and Pearl Jam - Vitalogy (1:56:14).
In this episode, we talk with Ian, Elijah, Tegan, and Mer from Headless Mary. I had a fantastic chat with the band about how they got started (including the story on their name) as well as chatting about their last album called Death Is A Moving Target. If you love music that touches that vibe of bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and Hum, then Headless Mary is for you. We talked about songwriting, influences, music we are listening to, and our mutual infatuation with Radiohead. Along the way, we of course had to talk about pizza. Their latest single “Park Place” will be on their new album called Pyres which comes out on Friday, August 23. You can pre-save over on Spotify. They will be celebrating the record release on Friday, August 23 at the Sanctuary in Hamtramck with Central Dogma (a future guest on Fans With Bands) who also have a new album coming. Opening the show is Saving Throw and Living AI. I highly recommend going to this show and getting the new Headless Mary album. For the 30th anniversary of Sunny Day Real Estate's iconic debut album, DIARY, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Dan Hoerner and Nate Mendel began playing music together in Seattle in 1992, they asked William Goldsmith to join on drums, despite the fact that he was already playing in three other bands at the time. When Mendel went on tour with another band, they asked Goldsmith's high school friend Jeremy Enigk to jam with them. Enigk took over lead vocal duties from Hoerner and when Mendel returned, they decided to continue as a four-piece. In 1993, they played what was only their second show as Sunny Day Real Estate when Jonathan Poneman saw them and immediately signed them to a deal with Sub Pop. Embarking on their first cross country tour, they landed in Chicago at Idful Studios to record with producer Brad Wood. Their debut album, DIARY, was eventually released in 1994. In this episode, Jeremy Enigk, Dan Hoerner and William Goldsmith describe the circumstances of how they first came together and the unique sound they stumbled upon. Goldsmith talks about initially being courted by Hoerner and Mendel after they saw him playing in punk bands around town, and how he learned to adapt his hardcore-influenced drumming style to suit the music they were creating. Hoerner describes taking an experimental approach early on, focusing on drones, feedback and open spaces, contrasting with heavy riffs that were more common in the grunge scene in Seattle at the time. Enigk talks about bringing more of a pop element into the group and how his early acoustic work as a solo artist informed the dynamic music he wanted to create with Sunny Day Real Estate. From the unlikely marriage of a punk band recording with Brad Wood to a grueling tour that led to Enigk's shredded vocals to taking inspiration from Fugazi, Treepeople, R.E.M., U2 and The Beatles to inserting triumphant hugeness into emotionally heavy songs to a high school relationship that informed the heartbroken lyrics, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.
This week we discuss the music of May 1994! The Eagles were charging over $100 per concert ticket while Pearl Jam went to war with Ticketmaster for better ticket prices. We take a left turn and talk about going to Mars before talking about Sunny Day Real Estate, The Beastie Boys, Weezer and The Lion King Soundtrack.

There he recorded albums by bands like Seam, Tar, Shrimp Boat and Eleventh Dream Day. In 1993 he produced Exile In Guyville for Liz Phair which became the catalyst for what became a very long and prosperous career as a producer and mixer. Brad wrapped up the 90's with many debut albums under his belt, including Sunny Day Real Estate‘s Diary, Veruca Salt‘s American Thighs, Placebo's self-titled LP, Placebo, and Ben Lee‘s Grandpaw Would. He also notably produced the Original Broadway Cast Recording for Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Throughout the iconic decade, Brad also worked with bands such as Far, that dog., Menthol, Pete Yorn, and The Smashing Pumpkins' Adore (which peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 charts). Later Brad relocated to Los Angeles, California, where he built Seagrass Studio where he's tracked and mixed for Say Anything, mewithoutyou, The Bangles, Sherwood, Touché Amoré, and many other artists. I am excited to have Brad back on the podcast again. You can catch his earlier episode RSR095 when he talked about his work in Chicago and moving to LA. In the latest episode of Columbia House Party, hosts Jake Goldsbie and Blake Murphy trace the so-called emo tree back up almost all the way to the top, exploring the definitive parent of the Midwest emo branch, Sunny Day Real Estate's 1994 album Diary. It stands to reason that if you listen to this podcast, a lot of the bands you enjoy (and episodes we've done to date) were influenced by Diary, as SDRE genuinely helped move the genre forward. Find out more about why SDRE couldn't sustain their success through some fault of their own, which of our hosts' favourite bands today draw influence from Diary, and where the Foo Fighters come in on this week's podcast. Welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions with Jason P. Woodbury. We're kicking off our 2024 season with two very special guests: Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy, discussing their love of and tribute to R.E.M.'s Murmur, which they are taking on tour in February. You no doubt know Shannon from his movies and shows, including some of our favorites like Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Midnight Special, The Shape of Water, and Boardwalk Empire. In his essential read Every Man For Himself and God Against All, director Werner Herzog calls Shannon “the most gifted actor of his generation.” As for Narducy, you've heard him with Superchunk, Bob Mould, Split Single, and many other projects. Together, they've staged tributes to T. Rex, The Smiths, Lou Reed, and Neil Young and more, and now, they turn their attention to R.E.M. It was a pleasure to speak with these two about the Athens, Georgia legends, along with detours into topics like Lou Reed, Sunny Day Real Estate, and best of all, Michael's run in with Bob Dylan. Episode 170 of Third Gear Scratch, in which our hero, Alien Epilepsy waxes and wanes about this year of our Lord, Two Thousand and Twenty Three. It's been a year of triumphs and struggles which has seen AE release his first and only solo record 'Everything' (Spartan) and tour on it, create a new record with his band Shiner, their 6th, tour with his friend Ian Prince and their band Birdhands with amazing bands Russian Circles, Spotlights, Jawbox and Pelican. But it was in the mother of all coup attempts that saw AE join Sunny Day Real Estate onstage in the role of guitarist in his friend Greg Suran's absence for 10 shows this summer and fall of '23. Growing older as an artist presents its own challenges and those showed up this year too. However, it is the continued support from the Third Gear Scratch faithful that give so much back and help to steady the ship for this long-time artist and maker of things. Huzzah!!
