The Someone You Should Know Podcast

Today's Podcast guest was a guest this time last year. He's back again this time to talk about a new book that he started in 2001 and it was lost for 22 years.  It's appropriately named "The Lost Manuscript."  It was a daily diary of the Worsham family's Checker, Schucks, and Cragen NHRA Funny Car Team of Del Worsham and Frank Pedregon Jr.  It's a fascinating read about a fascinating season for the team and it will take you back in the pits to relive every moment. He is my longtime friend Bob Wilber, and he's Someone You Should Know.Sidebar:  Bob recently received some amazing news, The Greater St. Louis Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame has announced that Bob Wilber will be inducted into its 50th Anniversary Class of 2024.  The induction ceremony will take place on April 18th at the Sheraton Westport Chalet Hotel in St. Louis. Kathryn interviews Author Wendy Willis Baldwin. When Pearl was just a kid, her mother was imprisoned for manslaughter. Her “perfect” sister, Ruby, grew up and left Pearl behind, fleeing to a new city and recreating herself. Now, still living in the childhood home in which her mother committed the crime, Pearl is struggling with her weight—a frustrating daily obstacle that becomes a life-threatening diagnosis—and she commits to bariatric surgery. Surprisingly, Ruby agrees to return and help Pearl during the recovery period. While Pearl thought losing the weight would be the key to her new life, she begins to realize she will never be able to step into her future if she and her sister can't reconnect and work together to put past trauma behind them. Inspired by the real-life experience of the author Wendy Willis Baldwin and her sister this is an uplifting and powerful story about two women taking their lives into their own hands. She is the co-host of the podcast, Life After Fat Pants.Kathryn also interviews Author Bob Wilber. As the son of a major league baseball player and a former baseball player himself, author Bob Wilber drew upon his own background to tell us a story that is just as much about the game of life as it is about sports. He writes in the distinct, first-person voices of the two main characters — gifted baseball player Brooks Bennett from Southern California and undersized hockey player Eric Olson from Minnesota — to immerse readers in every thought and emotion of the two main characters. Set against the backdrop of real places, real events and familiar names, he follows the characters as they each navigate the triumphs and heartaches of reaching the pinnacles of their respective sports. He brings us a story that will appeal to sports fans as well as anyone who appreciates an inspiring story of personal growth and perseverance. He is the son of major league player Del Wilber and has played in minor league baseball for the Detroit Tigers and the Oakland A's.

The World Series is now over and for baseball fans, we're in that never-never land where all we can hope for is a bit of news from our favorite team while we're sitting out the long offseason until spring training begins in February. But I've got an idea about something that can help you pass the time. Pick up a new book by today's guest, Bob Wilber. It's called “How Far,” and it explores the incredible friendship between a baseball player from Southern California and a hockey play from Minnesota. It's an inspiring story for sports fans, yes, but really for anyone who wants to be motivated to achieve their goals despite the curve balls and sinkers that inevitably are thrown in their path.As the son of a major league baseball player and a former pro baseball player himself, BobWilber has lived the athlete's life. How Far? weaves the compelling story of two disparate athletes who meet and form an unlikely bond. His creative use of first-person writing, having his fictional protagonists appear to write the book themselves in their distinct voices, immerses readers in every thought and word of the two characters. Brooks Bennett is a gifted baseball player (and the son of artist hippies) from Southern California, and Eric Olson is an undersized hockey player from Roseau, Minnesota — where hockey is king. The two men come from vastly different worlds and couldn't be more dissimilar. And in one spontaneous moment, their paths cross, and their lives change forever. It's a fun and interesting story, especially if you enjoy sports and an inside look at what it's like trying to pursue a Major League Baseball career, and then adapting to life after baseball. Here are some questions we asked Wilber:Q. You're the son of a Major Leaguer, your mom was a radio personality and then a PR person. You played college and professional baseball and then went into high level sports marketing while also running three different professional indoor soccer franchises as an executive. Then, you launched a 22-year career as a manager and PR rep for a couple of highly successful and popular Nitro Funny Car teams on the National Hot Rod Association tour. After all that, you walked away to become an author! You've just published your second book and it sounds like it's getting rave reviews. Tell us about how you adapted so much throughout your career…Q. I get that you had baseball in your DNA thanks to your dad, and after your professional playing days were over you even were a regional scouting supervisor for the Toronto Blue Jays. But how in the world did you make the shift to NHRA drag racing?Q. After all of that, why walk away to write books? What in your mind told you to go for it and start writing books? That's a bold leap!Q. So your autobiography, “Bats, Balls & Burnouts" was a hit, and you decided to write another book. Tell us how you settled on the premise and style for “How Far?”Q. How much of "How Far?" is totally real and how much is fiction?Q. And that begs the question: If your two main characters in “How Far?" are fictional, who are they based on?Q. How did you even pick those guys, those sports, and their personalities?Q. Is it a sports book? Would it appeal anyone other than sports fans?Q. Let's talk some baseball. Are you still connected to the game in any way?Q. What did you think of the World Series, the upstart Phillies against the incredible Houston Astros and Dusty Baker?Q. What are your thoughts about the influence of money on the game today? For example, the LA Angels' ownership say they won't trade Shohei Ohtani, the incredible two-way player who's contract expires at the end of the 2023 season, for which he will earn $30 million guaranteed. But what will he command going forward?Q. And how about the Yankees' Aaron Judge, who shattered the American League home run record in 2022 and is now ready to enter free agency?Q. Do you think these kinds of mega contracts are good for baseball?Q. What's next for you?Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

Musician and Bandleader, Alex Mendham of the illustrious Alex Mendham and His Orchestra graces the show to talk about the struggles of getting a niche group together, the successes, his musical inspirations, and what's next for this group which has become a mainstay on the BBC radio, and stages worldwide.Mesmerised from a young age by the music of a forgotten time, Essex-born musician, singer, and lyricist Alex Mendham made a name for himself, having burst onto the scene by forming his own orchestra at the tender age of just 20 (and refusing to slow down ever since!). Alex Mendham spent his youth studying the saxophone and meeting the last surviving dance band musicians from the golden era, living links to the past, including the virtuoso Al Gallodoro, a star of 1920s Paul Whiteman fame. He also spent several years as protégé to Bob Wilber, himself a student of Sidney Bechet. After the initial performances with his Orchestra, Alex soon realised what was needed was an authentic vocalist and frontman. He exchanged the saxophone for a conductor's baton and the rest as they say - is history. To learn more about the group including tour dates, and purchasing albums, follow the links below.Website:  https://www.alexmendham.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alexmendham/?hl=enFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/alexmendhamorchestra/Interested in MORE of this podcast? As part of the bonus, we have included a whole track with Glenn playing the trumpet and sax solos on the track "Blue Lou". This is a really great piece of hot jazz and swing recorded in 1983 in Scarborough in the UK.  Glenn said about the track; "When I left Benny Goodman I was inspired and I wanted to get the intensity hew got with his famous trio without bass with Teddy Wilson and Gene Krupa. I remember when I played with Benny on the tune "The Word Is waiting For The Sunrise” he would wave the rhythm section out and just play with guitar at that fast tempo. I was amazed as the intensity was the same with or without the rhythm section! I went on tour in England with Peanuts Hucko and it was called the Anglo American All-Stars and we had Len Skeat, Roy Williams and Danny Moss. The drummer was from England who was the agent for the package and Mark Shane, a great pianist out of the Teddy Wilson mould who was on the Bob Wilber trio, with me. So we formed the Classic Jazz Trio did several tours in England and released one album. After that and much before Wilber, Benny Goodman etc. I left the “classic jazz” scene for Hollywood and Television having achieved my goals a whole other story and episode began on my musical journey." Bob Wilber is from a large family where sports and baseball ruled the roost. Fortunate enough to have the guidance of his Major League Baseball playing father, loving mother and supportive/competitive siblings, Bob has lived a life full of adventure and love. After earning his degree in TV/Radio Broadcasting from Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville, where he also played four years of baseball for a team that competed in two NCAA Division II World Series championships, Bob Wilber was signed to a free agent contract by the Detroit Tigers in 1978. He played parts of two seasons of minor league baseball with the Tigers, followed by a single season with an Oakland A’s farm club, before joining the Toronto Blue Jays as a Scouting Supervisor and Minor League Coach.  After four years with the Blue Jays, he entered the sports marketing arena, initially in the sports apparel business with Converse Shoes, and then joined his brother Del at Del Wilber + Associates, managing major sponsorships for IBM, Chrysler, Black & Decker, and other corporate clients, while also developing new sponsorships for USA Baseball, US Rowing, and the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). He was named Vice President of the St. Louis Storm franchise in the MISL in 1989, and later was General Manager of the Kansas City Attack indoor soccer club. He entered the racing world when he was selected to be the General Manager at Heartland Park, a multi-purpose racing facility in Topeka, Kansas, and soon found his way into management roles at the team level. From 1997 to 2008 he was the Team Manager for Funny Car driver Del Worsham and since 2009 has held the same position for Tim Wilkerson. Bob handles the team’s management needs and liaison with sponsors and he also represents the organization in terms of both public and media relations. As part of his PR duties, he has written a popular blog at NHRA.com for the last six years. With nearly 10,000 regular readers around the world, it is regarded as the most widely followed blog in the sport of professional drag racing.

Eighty-one-year old Bob Wilber is one of the leading clarinettists and saxophonists in traditional jazz, and he joins Alyn Shipton to look back at the highlights of a career that began when Bob was a teenage pupil of the great Sidney Bechet. The programme covers recordings from the 1940s to the present day and includes Wilber's dramatic recreations of Ellington for the Francis Ford Coppola film The Cotton Club.
