Hello Friends ~ Memorial Day is a very special holiday in our household. I first recorded this podcast in 2022 and it remains one of my favorites so I decided to repost it. I never knew these stories about the founding of Memorial Day until I started working to uncover this history for you (thank you for that opportunity). I find myself still moved to tears about how so many different people decided to do something very similar. It serves as a reminder of our common humanity and what matters most - our love for each other, our love of country and our deep gratitude for those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We'll be back on Tuesday with our regular podcasts (barring any stories that need our attention as we support you and your families with quick, concise, nonpartisan news). Sending love to you and your loved ones ~ and buy yourself some flowers! (listen and you'll understand). Love, Jenna SUPPORT OUR MISSION: Love nonpartisan news? Dennis is joined via Zoom by playwright Tom Jacobson whose latest play Tasty Little Rabbit is currently showing at the Moving Arts Theatre in Los Angeles. The play tells the true story of a 1936 Fascist Italian investigation of pornography charges in Taormina, Sicily. This artistic prosecution uncovers a much darker secret of a 1890s love triangle between photographer Wilhelm Von Gloeden, an a 18 year-old Sicilian boy and a mysterious Irish poet. Tom talks about how he first learned of the true story, visiting Sicily as part of his research, the riveting "Kissing Contest" scene at the play's center and why the story is so relevant to today. He also talks about how he's been able to be so productive as a playwright while working a day job as a fundraiser for organizations like the Natural History Museum, LACMA and the Los Angeles Zoo. Other topics include: falling in love with theater as a kid in Oklahoma, using a New York-based alias to get his breakthrough play Cyberqueer produced in Los Angeles, writing plays to upset his mother, being told he's "too old to write for TV" at the age of 33, meeting his husband of 30 years on a blind date and why he loves being a part of the LA theater community.
I am coaching a speaker as she prepares for one of the biggest keynotes of her career. Her story is powerful, full of resilience and triumph. As she runs through her story, I am captivated... until it just... stops. She smiles, says thank you, and that's it. There is no call to action and no invitation. I deliver the news, gently: her ending isn't serving her or the audience. She pushes back because she doesn't want to sound salesy. And while I do definitely understand her concerns, I explain that, while her story hits hard, her ending needs to hit home. So we roll up the sleeves and get back to work, keeping the emotional core intact and reshaping her closing into a call to action that mirrors the emotional arc of her story. And guess what? It doesn't feel forced; her final line ties back to her opening message and invites the audience to step into their own transformation. When she takes the stage, the response is absolutely incredible. After delivering her Talk, a flurry of people approach her. One of them ends up booking her. Another one wants to feature her in an article. One person even tells her that the challenge she issued changed something significant for them. In this episode of the Storytelling School Podcast, you'll learn why having a CTA (Call To Action) at the conclusion of your story is so important. In the process, you'll discover why your CTA needs to be consistent with the emotional tone of your story, and get answers to questions like: How can you get your message to ripple out further than the audience in front of you? What kind of change could you inspire if your story didn't simply end with “The End”? How do you turn an emotional story into impactful action? What you will learn in this episode: Why your Talk needs a clear CTA (Call To Action) What are the different CTA types and when to use them How to make sure that the CTA fits your story's emotional tone Why keeping things simple is crucial A little about me: Hi there. I'm Kymberlee. As a Speaking Strategist and founder of Storytelling School, I've had the pleasure of working with over 500 speakers, business leaders, and entrepreneurs worldwide for over a decade. No matter if those folks were getting ready to take the TED or TEDx stage or preparing for a high-stakes presentation with everything on the line, my specialty is High Stakes Short Form Communication. I've seen what works when influencing change and what doesn't. It turns out storytelling is one of the most powerful tools you can have in your arsenal. That's why I'm building a movement of master storytellers to affect change in the world on a global scale to help people tell real stories that have influence and impact. With effective storytelling, you change people's lives. Since competition for potential client attention is fierce, a story can make the difference between being memorable or irrelevant. You'll find me sharing my matcha tea mishap to discuss perfectionism, my quest for Bruce Lee and Hello Kitty art to explore kindness, or the six months of live blade training I underwent to illustrate presence. I spend my days showing the power of using stories to help cement ideas and bring lessons to life and teach my clients to do the same. If you think business owners can't tell stories or don't have stories to share with their clients, staff, donors, followers, or investors, I invite you to reconsider your perspective. There's no better place than in business to tell your stories so audiences, no matter how big or small, can understand how you think and what you value. Now it's your turn... If you're ready to become a master storyteller and effect change in our world, you've come to the right place. If you've ever felt unqualified or uncertain about what God can do through you, this message is for you. Once upon a time. Past tense, future tense, present tense. (So tense!) Our stories about the mysteries of life may require us to think in a way that transcends time—but that is also a reference to time. The timeless in opposition to time. Our sense of time moving fast or slow tells us something about how much we are enjoying the string of present moments we are in. We have good times and bad times, boring times, climactic times. It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. It was the okay of times...Enter YOUR labyrinth at: BeWhoYouAre.com Request: I recorded this book for a podcast platform so that you can listen for free. Patti and Pottymouth had the great joy of sitting down with Jean Fruth and Jeff Idelson, who are bringing their new film “See Her, Be Her,” to MLB Network between games two and three of this year's World Series. “See Her, Be Her” profiles seven women baseball players in seven different parts of the world, and demonstrates the skill, perseverance, passion, and all-around badassery required to play the game they love. Jean and Jeff tell us about selecting the countries, the athletes, the stories to tell, and why film is the way to do it. We talk about “all these little channels of goodness happening” from Baseball for All to DC Girls Baseball, to Kelsie and Olivia, and being the first ones, to one day getting it all together to create a pipeline for girls and women to play at the highest levels. And how just maybe this film moves that process a little farther down the road. Stories create connections by sharing personal experiences and vulnerabilities, helping others see their own paths through self-discovery. They are more memorable and engaging than mere lessons, as they evoke emotions and foster empathy. Effective storytelling should include personal failures, be relevant, concise, and provide a clear summary to ensure impact. Ultimately, storytelling builds trust and rapport, which are crucial for meaningful relationships in both personal and professional settings.

Catholic hospitals and existing religious restrictions on abortion are currently co-existing with post-Roe abortion bans across the U.S. And, in states where abortion is still accessible, Catholic hospitals are still a sizeable barrier to accessing compassionate, evidence-based medical care. Amy Littlefield, Abortion Access Correspondent at the Nation, sits down with us to discuss how trauma previously seen at Catholic hospitals when trying to access sexual and reproductive healthcare is now being seen on a more general scale. Catholic hospitals up 1 in 6 acute-care hospital beds and generally follow rules written by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. These rules ban abortion, fail to promote or condone contraceptive practices, ban direct sterilization of men and women, and deny care to transgender patients. Patients often don't know they requesting care from a Catholic hospital, or that the few hospitals in their area have a religious affiliation or have merged with health systems that have a religious affiliation. For a deeper dive into care offered by Catholic hospitals, find the past podcast episode here. Before the overturning of Roe, stories out of Catholic or religiously affiliated hospitals included patients having to wait in extreme pain while ethics review boards debated termination, patients having to demonstrate that they were “sick enough” or “deserving enough” for appropriate care, and more. Post-Roe, similar stories are being reported—more generally—at an alarming frequency around the country. Five women in Texas, who were pregnant with wanted pregnancies, were subjected to varying degrees of state-sanctioned torture as they sought necessary abortion care. The Center for Reproductive Rights is currently suing the state on their behalf. Savita Halappanavar died in Ireland after being denied an abortion and developing sepsis as a result. Medical systems waiting for pregnant patients to be “sick enough” or “close enough to death,” endangers and kills people who need and have a right to basic healthcare, including abortion.LinksThe Nation on TwitterThe Nation on FacebookThe Southern Hospitals Report: Faith, Culture, and Abortion Bans in the US SouthRemarks at Press Conference by Plaintiffs in Zurawski v.
