April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month. Figures show there are 67 Diagnoses Annually in Clare alone. The good news is, though, that since the start of this month, the eligible age range for BowelScreen has now been extended to include 70-year-olds. Free bowel screening is now available to everyone aged 59 to 70. However, the Irish Cancer Society has expressed concern at low bowel screening uptake... To find out more, Peter O'Connell was joined by Mary Woods, who hails from Newmarket-on-Fergus and survived both womb and bowel cancer and Policy and Campaigns Manager at Irish Cancer Society, Emma Harte. Bowel cancer is also known as the "silent killer” because sometimes it can be asymptomatic, particularly in the early stages of the disease. After lung cancer, bowel cancer is the second most common cause of cancer-related death in Australia. But, it shouldn't be. If caught early, 99% of treatments are successful.Nick Lee OAM, my guest this week, is on a mission to empower Australians to prevent bowl cancer through the Jodi Lee Foundation, which he set up after the death of his wife, Jodi, from bowel cancer in 2010. Since then, the Jodi Lee Foundation has saved countless lives by raising awareness about bowel cancer and encouraging people to take a simple screening test.I found my conversation with Nick really moving but also uplifting - he's done so much good in our world.JODI LEE FOUNDATIONJodi Lee Foundation: https://jodileefoundation.org.auSocial media handle: @jodileefoundationBowel Cancer Sympton Checker: https://jodileefoundation.org.au/awareness-campaigns/symptom-checker/Trust Your Gut campaign: https://jodileefoundation.org.au/awareness-campaigns/trust-your-gut/The JLF Trek: https://app.jodileefoundation.org.au/events5 COMMON NUTRITION MYTHS DEBUNKEDDownload my Free Guide and join the Vibrant Lives community here: https://vibrantlivespodcast.com/free-guide/LINKS MENTIONED IN THE PODCASTThe MindBodyBrain Project with Paul Taylor: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-mindbodybrain-project/id1534267189Bowl cancer awareness month: https://www.bowelcanceraustralia.org/bowel-cancer-awareness-monthHOW YOU CAN SUPPORT THE PODCASTPlease tell your friends about the podcast and share it with them.Follow me on Instagram @vibrant_lives_podcastFollow my Facebook page: @vibrantlivespodcastIf you could rate and review the podcast on Apple Podcasts, that would be super helpful.Check out ways you can support the podcast on my website: https://vibrantlivespodcast.com/be-involved/

June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month raising awareness of Australia's second deadliest cancer   - with more than 300 Australians diagnosed with it, and more than 100 dying from it, each week. Thankfully lives can be saved through early detection provided it is found early with statistics indicating identification and removal of remove polyps can reduce the incidence of bowel cancer by 60% and reduce deaths by 90%.  Sadly however, new statistical modelling in the face of COVID 19 has conservatively estimated that even a three-month delay in cancer diagnosis and treatment would result in 90 additional deaths and $12 million in additional healthcare costs in Australia over five years. Sydney Adventist Hospital’s Associate Professor Craig Lynch was the first colorectal surgeon in Australia to use robotic surgery to perform colorectal robotic surgery back in 2009 and he and his San colleague Dr Steve Pillinger (their practice is Australian Robotic Colorectal Surgery) are responsible for amongst Australia’s highest volume of robotic colorectal surgery . Even more importantly they are training others, live-streaming a complex case last week so a new generation of surgeons are trained and future patients can also benefit.  Professor Lynch joins John Stanley to discuss the importance of early detection of bowel cancer.
