Was it determined by class?In our podcast in two parts, we discuss this topic with Karolina Lendák-Kabók and Lucija Balikić, around their research project called entitled “Mixed Families: Searching forIdentity and Belonging in Post-Conflict Societies”. Their research group emerges from the The Momentum (Lendület) 2025 project hosted at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of MinorityStudies and it is financed by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences – Flagship Program of the Academy.By following marriages that crossed lines of language, confession, and social status, the research project “MixedFamilies: Searching for Identity and Belonging in Post-Conflict Societies” trace how states, churches, and communities sought to regulate intimacy long before theyregulated borders.In our second part, we discuss why mixedness shouldbe treated as a long historical process instead of a simple past-present comparison. Legal norms, religious prescriptions, social expectations, and gendered assumptions shaped mixed families across generations. To unfold thiscomplex phenomenon, Karolina Lendák-Kabók and Lucija Balikić move between micro‑level family dynamics, meso‑level institutions such as schools and churches, andmacro‑level political frameworks to trace how mixedness is produced, negotiated, and transmitted over time.The second part of this episode also explores theproject's diverse source base: legal codes, canon laws,  minority association records, ego‑documents, and oral interviews. Finally, the conversation opens toward the future of the field. AAbd Allah ibn al-Muqaffa‘ (también transcrito como Ibn al-Muqaffa, en árabe: ابن المقفع‎), un escritor, traductor y pensador persa del siglo VIII, una de las figuras más influyentes de la prosa árabe clásica. Nació hacia el año 720 d. C. en Fars (actual Irán), cuando el Imperio abasí estaba en formación. Su nombre original era Rūzbeh, y tras convertirse al islam adoptó el nombre Abd Allah ibn al-Muqaffa‘. Sirvió como secretario (katib) para gobernadores árabes, lo que le permitió dominar el árabe literario. Ibn al-Muqaffa‘ es célebre por su labor como traductor del persa medio al árabe, especialmente por su versión del libro Kalila wa Dimna (basado en el texto sánscrito Panchatantra). Esta obra —una colección de fábulas protagonizadas por animales con enseñanzas morales y políticas— se convirtió en uno de los textos más influyentes de la literatura árabe y luego inspiró versiones en múltiples lenguas europeas. Dr. Boj Lopez is a Maya-K'iche' Assistant Professor of Chicanx and Central American Studies at UCLA. We discuss her academic journey and early interests in the project of ethnic studies, as well as in building Maya community spaces in diaspora. Boj Lopez works in the growing field of Critical Latinx Indigeneity which she approaches as a bridge of conversations between Latino/Chicano Studies and Native American and Indigenous Studies. This approach interrogates the complicated relationships with categories like ‘Latin,' which some refuse. Yet, at the same time also leaves room for Maya diaspora communities who may adopt or use the ‘Latin' category for survival. The book Indigenous Archives recently released and we explore some of its premise which responded to questions of why displaced Maya diaspora communities look for each other and how they find one another. Z ankety se podle něj stala vzrušující národní hra se slavnými podvody, kterou publikum sleduje ze setrvačnosti, nostalgie a zvědavosti, kdo svým názorem přetlačí ty druhé. „Možností, jak zjišťovat popularitu, dnes ale máme mnohem víc,“ tvrdí Klusák. „V televizní anketě se zas a znova umisťují ti, kteří debutovali před víc než třiceti lety, jako jsou Lucie Bílá, Chinaski nebo Kabát. Český slavík se týká jen určité skupiny, která má vůli, čas a náturu se této ankety zúčastnit, což zdaleka nejsou všichni konzumenti hudby.“ S nápadem jednou ročně oceňovat nejoblíbenější zpěváky a zpěvačky přišel na začátku šedesátých let Ladislav Smoljak. Vítězné příčky měly sloužit jako argument, aby byla nová hudba méně potlačovaná. „V době, kdy Slavík začínal, u nás nejenom že neexistovala podobná anketa, ale ani svobodné volby nebo ústav pro výzkum veřejného mínění – protože proč by komunisté chtěli zveřejňovat, co si myslí lidé… V prvních letech tedy velmi užitečně a jedinečně vyplňoval tuto mezeru,“ připomíná Klusák. Od roku 1969 až do pádu komunismu pak režim výsledky z politických důvodů falšoval. Dnes v otázce popularity Český slavík podle hudebního publicisty reflektuje jen část reality. „Mainstream se atomizoval víc než dřív. Máme jich několik. Vidím přinejmenším dva proudy: Ten konzervativnější, který je docela dobře reprezentovaný Českým slavíkem, a pak ten druhý, který se týká hiphoperů a jejž lze spočíst přes streamovací služby a internetové platformy. Kvantitativně to rozhodně lze za mainstream považovat,“ říká. V rozhovoru také apeluje, aby lidé nerezignovali na kontakt s tím, co se v hudbě aktuálně děje. „Nová tvorba je neustále překvapivá. Je to skutečný zdroj naděje, že na současnost se dá reagovat konstruktivně, nápaditě a bez přílišné temnoty. A i temné projekty jsou často velmi katarzní. Vyplácí se to. "From the top of the world — fabulous 1340 KAB, Antonio Bay!"Hey, it's Halloween, and we're taking a whack at another '80s horror favorite: John Carpenter's “minor classic,” The Fog.Specifically, that moment after the radio station fire, the inspiration for this week's episode. I really wanted to perpetually capture that long piano note, with the wind and fog horns. Oh those gloomy piano keys and castrated foghorns (or maybe the deep fog horns are only an east coast thing).I still love this movie for its sound design. The audible tension created by the film's sound-team feels just as threatening today as it was back then. The contrast between the oddly cheerful KAB radio IDs and the ominous water spillage from a doomed piece of wood is personal fave. That, mid-jingle, a garbled threat cuts through, muttering about “...albatrosses around necks" still takes my breath.Maybe The Fog is one of the sillier '80s horror films in terms of premise — but as a kid, the idea of murderous lepers traveling in a glowing mist like corpse-pirate ninjas seemed totally plausible. I was shook.Basically, the movie could be summed up as “YOU ONLY MOVED THE HEADSTONES!” — but on water. Never mind that The Fog came out two years earlier than Poltergeist. Actually, no — let's mind it. Maybe Spielberg watched The Fog and thought, “We'll do The Fog on land — I already did a water horror movie.” Or stories of history-born revenge haunting the modern world are a classic trope (think The Turn of the Screw, Candyman, A Christmas Carol, etc.) Either way, both Poltergeist and The Fog deliver the murderous ghostly dead in strange costumes.And that raises a question: if ghosts exist, are they doomed to wear the outfit they died in? Or can they rotate through their wardrobe from life? (Because honestly, I'd love to haunt people in my Nike Air Pegasus from '91.
