A stoma can be created for a number of reasons, including bowel cancer, bladder cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, or an obstruction in the bladder or bowel.Adjusting to a colostomy can be difficult, but it does not mean you cannot enjoy a full and active life. Colostomy equipment is discreet and secure, and you should be able to do most of the activities you enjoyed before.Award winning BBC presenter, Adele Roberts, didn't let her stoma bag slow her down after bowel cancer surgery. We thank Jim today as his story I'm sure will help and inspire other's especially those who are about to go through a similar scenario.#Stoma#HeartTransplant#EbsteinsAnomaly#RareCondition#HealthJourney#LifeChangingDiagnosis#MentalHealth#Vulnerability#SelfCompassion#PostTraumaticGrowth#MedicalMiracle#BBCSports#Inspiration#Cardiology#Surgery#Podcast#Healthcare#HeartHealth#MedicalBreakthrough#EmotionalJourney#SupportSystem#HealthcareHeroes#PatientStories#CardiologyCare#MedicalJourney#LifeLessons#MentalWellness#HealthAwareness#InspirationalTalk#LivingWithIllness#RareDiseaseAwareness#SharingIsCaring#MedicalSupport#BBCReporter#HeartDisease#PodcastInterview#HealthTalk#Empowerment#Wellbeing#HealthPodcast#ChronicIllnessCheck out our new website at www.whostomanddick.comCheck out our website at www.whostomanddick.com

On the threshold of the first COVID lockdown when people were preparing for the unknown, a mother of two young children from Leeds was given a Life Changing diagnosis. Tanja Bage had always been a keen singer and performer and so was increasingly aware of her shortness of breath. There had been several attempts to deal with it, but nothing worked. Eventually she had an appointment with an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist. The diagnosis was cancer, which required almost immediate surgery to remove the tumour, and with it her vocal chords. She would be losing her voice, and she had just a week to prepare herself and her family. Tanja describes that pre-Covid frenzy, the support she received and the challenges of being a mother while having to re-learn how to speak using a Stoma in her neck. Her mix of passion and stoicism meant that not only did she recover after the massively intrusive operation, but she is now involved in artistic ventures with the Laryngectomy choir and the Sound Voice project as well as being a brilliant mother to her children.Producer: Tom Alban

Brooke is joined by the marvellous Adam Fare, who shares his journey of living with multiple disabilities, including autism, ADHD, chronic bowel issues, and an eating disorder. He reflects on his childhood, struggling with undiagnosed conditions and the challenges he faced in school. Despite facing burnout and difficult medical decisions, Adam emphasises the importance of setting boundaries and being true to oneself. He discusses the impact of his disabilities on his relationships with family and friends, highlighting the value of empathy and support. Adam also touches on the misconceptions and odd questions he has encountered regarding his colostomy bag, emphasising the need for understanding and respect towards individuals with disabilities. Growing up with undiagnosed autism, ADHD, and chronic health issues made childhood difficult for Adam, emphasising the challenges of navigating life without proper understanding and support. Adam's experience highlights the importance of recognising and respecting personal boundaries, especially in managing disabilities and coping with changing circumstances over time. Through his struggles, Adam developed a strong sense of empathy and support for others, showcasing the positive impact of personal challenges on fostering compassion and understanding. Adam's story underscores the need for society to move beyond superficial campaigns and embrace genuine acceptance and respect for individuals with disabilities. BEST MOMENTS "I use identity first language personally for my disability, so I class myself as a disabled person." "I think people just need to judge less, to be honest with you." "It's almost like in a cycle. for me. So I go through cycles where I think I can manage it and I just burn out, burn out, burn out, burn out, crisis." "I think people are naturally very curious, which is great. Curiosity is actually really interesting." In this week's episode, I'll be delving into Petrina Barber's harrowing journey with cancer, diagnosed shortly after the birth of her son. Petrina shares the complexities of her battle, not just with the disease itself but also with the incurable condition that arose from her treatment, drastically impacting her and her family's life. While Petrina lost a sense of autonomy over her body and acknowledges the profound losses it brought, she has been able to show such tremendous strength, and physically accomplish what no doctor thought possible. In doing so - she is redefining what is possible for people with stomas. Key Points Discussed: • The Initial Shock: Petrina's “perfect” life was upended with a cancer diagnosis at a young age, changing everything she knew and planned for her abd her family's future. • Treatment and its Aftermath: The severe side effects of cancer treatment led to the development of Pelvic Radiation Disease (PRD), significantly altering Petrina's life quality and leading to numerous medical emergencies. • Advocacy and Self-Care: Learning to advocate for herself and focusing on the quality of life became Petrina's priority, shifting from a survival mindset to one of living fully despite the circumstances. What Petrina has been able to achieve in the face of all of her health challenges, is incredibly impressive. • Strength and Resilience: Despite numerous challenges, Petrina's story is a testament to human resilience, the power of family support, and the importance of finding joy and purpose even in the face of life-altering adversity. Petrina's narrative is a touching reminder of the unpredictable nature of life, the strength found in vulnerability, and the power of hope and relentless love in navigating the most challenging moments. This episode illuminates the deep impact of health crises on personal identity, family dynamics, and the journey toward finding new meaning and strength amidst loss. When fifty-something Raphaela Ilgenfritz started feeling tired all the time, she thought her fatigue was tied to menopause. She had to be outfitted with a colostomy bag, a challenge she immediately embraced. Raphaela founded Stoma4life, a support group for those with below-the-belt cancers, which grew into a podcast, heard on UKHealthRadio. This is her story.

In the previous episode, medical physicist Scott Symington described his paradigm for understanding the relationship between Christianity and science, which he called STOMA, or symbiotic trending overlapping magisteria. In this episode, Abdu and Scott discuss certain controversial topics in the conversation between religion and science and apply Scott's STOMA paradigm to them in order to discover whether science and Christianity are symbiotic and trending toward each other.
Abdu is joined by medical physicist Scott Symington to discuss the relationship between religion and science. Do they intersect or overlap, or are they part of what Stephen Jay Gould called non-overlapping magisteria (NOMA)? Symington proposes an alternative paradigm, STOMA, that holds the potential for mutual benefit between science and, in particular, Christianity.
