Toronto's indie rock sensation HotKid is back with a brand-new 4-track EP, "Downtown," set for release on October 4th, 2024 out on Fortune Stellar Records. The EP features both full-band and acoustic versions of the title track, as well as two additional guitar-driven songs, “Naked” and “All Time,” capturing the band's signature sound and versatility. The full-band tracks were recorded live off the floor at the National Music Centre's Studio Bell in Calgary, AB, using the renowned Trident console. This legendary piece of equipment has been instrumental in creating classic records by artists like David Bowie, Elton John, Queen, Rush, and Metallica. The historic studio environment, combined with exceptional acoustics and state-of-the-art gear, provided the perfect setting to capture the energy and vibrant performance. The session was engineered by Eric Cinnamon, ensuring that the recordings preserved the authentic, live feel of the band's sound. The acoustic version of "Downtown" was recorded live at the House of Miracles in Cambridge, ON, featuring Shiloh Harrison on guitar and vocals and Andrew DeVillers on baritone acoustic and vocals. Engineered and mixed by Andy Magoffin, who has worked with acclaimed artists like Great Lake Swimmers, Constantines, Attack in Black, and Feist, this stripped-down rendition highlights the emotive core and lyrical depth of the song. The Downtown EP also includes contributions from Jesse Bellon on guitar, Andrew DeVillers on bass, and Mike McKeever on drums. The EP was mixed by Shiloh Harrison and mastered by Noah Mintz at the Lacquer Channel in Toronto, ON. Mintz, known for his work with Broken Social Scene, The Tragically Hip, Sarah Harmer, and Daniel Caesar, added his signature polish to the recordings, giving the tracks a professional and cohesive finish. Philly-based Native Harrow have remained largely independent - musically, professionally, and aesthetically, since their beginning, meticulously crafting and perfecting a sound that is melded together from pieces of folk, soul, and rock n' roll. On 13th September, they release new album Divided Kind. This album is the lifetime's work of two scholars of music whose individual backgrounds in the arts have forged a strict artistic discipline that exists in sharp contrast to the more traditionally laissez-faire world of rock and popular music. Pre-save Divided Kind here. Over a catalogue of six albums, Native Harrow have produced a discography of “rich, engrossing records” and “instant classics” while single-mindedly following their own artistic code, acquiescing only to the exigence of the song: each song its own world with its own rules. Their original perspective and extraordinary songwriting, combined with a completely individual approach to crafting albums and steering their career, has garnered them coverage at Uncut, Mojo, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, The Line of Best Fit, Paste, American Songwriter, The Bluegrass Situation, Holler, Rough Trade, Telegraph, The Evening Standard, The Times, Shindig, The Sun, and many more. They've shared stages with legends including the Eagles, Robert Plant & Alison Kraus, and Beth Hart, as well as acts including Sierra Ferrell, The Heavy Heavy, Courtney Marie Andrews, The Cactus Blossoms, Great Lake Swimmers, Esme Patterson, and more. #Music #Interview #Albums

"Anniversary" Abigail Lapell is one of the most arresting voices in modern music. The Canadian-born singer-songwriter has been on an undeniable winning streak since her 2011 debut album Survivor. She followed that up with stunners like 2017's Hide Nor Hair, 2022's Stolen Time and her brand new one Anniversary. We'll get to Anniversary in a second but before we do, here are a few things to know about Abigail. Aside from snaring honors like the Canadian Folk Music Award, the Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award, the Toronto-based musician has scored a Canadian folk radio #1, logged close to 50 million streams and been quietly forging a reputation as a heart-stopping live performer, knocking people out at SXSW, the Edmonton Folk Fest and POP Montreal. Her new album was recorded with Tony Dekker of the Great Lake Swimmers in a 200 year old church in Niagara on the Lake and it's a riveting listen. Filled with haunting percussion, musical precision, and folky finesse, Anniversary is one of the most achingly beautiful albums of the year. www.abigaillapell.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenbooks.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

ABOUT SAIL CASSADY:Sexuality. Mental Health. Consciousness. These are some of the meta themes that run through the music of flamboyant indie-rocker 'Sail Cassady' who hails from Victoria, BC.Like a queer-friendly U2, their debut album ‘Juniper' documents the torture and delights of the artists own grueling process of self-discovery, and gives you a glimpse into the subterranean realms of the Sail Cassady consciousness.“Lusting you, You're lusting me, Lusting you, Against the tree..” Leather Shoe Lovers ‘Juniper' was self produced along with Bob Gronotte (JP Maurice, Stel, Towers and Trees, and Hawk and Steele L, Tal Bachman) and will be out on Serkeus Records July 21st, 2023. Plans surrounding the release include touring, playing festivals, and showcasing. From 2010-2017 Sail Cassady was the frontman of Man Made Lake, who recorded and released 4 albums, and played in front of thousands of people over the years, including an appearance at Rifflandia Festival as well as to sold out crowds in venues elsewhere. “Dark Island” Inspired by poetry, traditional celtic music, indie rock and the terrain of their beloved home of Cape Breton, the members of Villages have the island in their bones. And that makes sense—because they come from five generations of Cape Bretonians. So it's safe to say it's in their bones, their hearts, their minds and their souls. And it shows. The band's new long player Dark Island is a moving meditation on ancestry, roots and Cape Breton itself, the latter being the spiritual connective tissue that links the album's eleven tracks. From songs like the buoyant Love Will Live On to the moving Celtic groove of Play The Fiddle All Night, which you just heard, Dark Island is filled with pure sonic joy. Produced Juno-award winning composer and producer Joshua Van Tassel, who has worked with the Great Lake Swimmers and Fortunate Ones, this album is nothing short of revelatory. Inspired by the dramatic terrain of Cape Breton and the nature that inhabits it, Dark Island creates a moving landscape of sonorous melodies, lifting harmonies and poetic finesse. www.thevillagesband.net www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

“When The Storm Has Passed” With ten albums or so under their indie folk belts, The Great Lake Swimmers have consistently been one of the most arresting affecting and spellbinding bands around. The Canadian outfit introduced themselves to the world with their self-titled 2003 effort and since then have put out classics like New Wild Everywhere, The Waves, The Wake and the Juno-nominated Lost Channels, which was also shortlisted for the Polaris Prize. Sonically, the band bring to mind everyone from R.E.M to Teenage Fanclub to Miracle Legion. And throughout their songbook, singer Tony Dekker's poetic lyrics form a literate blend of ecology, environmentalism and good old fashioned romanticism. He's a potent triple threat. The band have also put out four live albums, four EPs and a covers album that features takes on numbers by The Rolling Stones, Tom Waits and NeIl Young and John Cale. Oh, and Dekker also has a marvelous solo album called Prayer of The Woods. The point here is that there's a healthy crop of Great Lakes Swimmers material for you to plunge into. But the music you're hearing on the program today is the band's first new music since 2019. It's been a while. But they're back and they've never sounded better. Their two new tracks—“When The Storm Has Passed” and “Moonlight, Stay Above”—feature Dekker's trademark poetic finesse and penchant for writing some of the catchiest and heartfelt songs on the planet. We're glad they're back! www.greatlakeswimmers.com www.greatlakeswimmers.bandcamp.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com www.embersarts.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Tony Dekker of indie folk-rock band Great Lake Swimmers makes the case for Lake Erie, and St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik advocates for Lake Michigan. Rube & Rake's new album begins with an ode to family and friends— togetherness—as Josh Sandu declares, against a hopeful bluegrass backdrop, “somewhere there's a place to lay my head.” Nine songs later, over a gently plucked guitar, he sings, “I won't go picking it up, the weight of the page is just too much.”Following the award-winning 2017 debut Back and Forth, the St. John's- based Sandu and Andrew Laite wanted to keep the core of that album's artistic successes—musical and collaborative harmony, folk storytelling—while recognizing audience expectations have intensified. “The first album ends up being the greatest hits of what you've done so far,” says Laite. “With record number two, you want it to be in the ring with the first one, only bigger and stronger.”For their sophomore album Leaving With Nothing, Sandu and Laite enlisted producer Adam Hogan, best known for his anthemic guitar work as a member of Newfoundland's most beloved indie-rock outfit, Hey Rosetta!. Recording in bits in houses around St. John's, Rube & Rake (& Adam) worked to expand the band's sound to include more instrumentation, pleasingly surprising time changes, and an overall expansion of intention.“We knew that this grouping of songs deserved a different treatment and wanted to introduce somebody with different instincts and tendencies,” says Laite. “We were confident that Adam would shed the right light on these songs while also maintaining our methodology.” “He's a very engaged person,” adds Sandu, “who had a lot of thoughts on every aspect of the recording process.”Sandu and Laite have always maximized the duo configuration—even singing together at a single condenser microphone, allowing for space and patience within the songs—but this is the first time they've consciously pushed outside it, to fill in that air with new tones and textures in the form of a full band. The resulting record evokes Blue Rodeo at its most rollicking, Great Lake Swimmers at their most thoughtful, and The Tallest Man On Earth at their most gently contemplative. The best distillation of all these themes, music and expectation and place, comes at the album's midpoint, in the five-minute “10-33”—CB radio code for “mayday”—where Rube & Rake reveal themselves to be ready for anything. “This ain't a common road, but you already know,” sings Sandu, “I will be leaving with nothing, a-dead-head I will go.”The collection of 10 songs comprising Leaving With Nothing fits comfortably in the folk tradition of road-worn tales and lost love laments told across an ever-changing, often lonely landscape. Rube & Rake is for late-night wind-downs, long drives, a walk by the water: solitary and steadfast, honest and true.#galeforcewins is an inspirational podcast with New episodes every Tuesday evening on Youtube or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also visit https://galeforcewins.com/To message Gerry visit: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gerrycarew/To message Allan visit: https://www.linkedin.com/in/allanadale/

We're celebrating Canada's birthday on Episode 332 of Folk Roots Radio with another special edition of the show. Our guest today is one Matt Wheeler. The terms "troubadour", "poet with a guitar", & "stage banter-conversationalist" all describe Matt Wheeler's music & performance style well. Matt's songwriting paints pictures with words. Matt has delighted audiences from New England to North Carolina, Ontario to Chicago. His new album "Wonder of it All" - a collection of songs based on classic works of literature like "The Little Prince" & "The Hobbit", was released on 5/21/21.For our conversation today, we are going to be discussing Ongiara “ahn-gee-AR-uh”, with a hard “g - the third studio album by Canadian folk rock band Great Lake Swimmers, released on March 27, 2007. The album was released on Nettwerk and the band recorded most of the album in London, Ontario's historic music venue Aeolian Hall with producer Andy Magoffin. For those wondering, Ongiara is the name of a boat that ferried the band to the site where they recorded the first demo. It's also the original indigenous name of Niagara Falls. Enjoy and thanks for listening!

Mike catches up with Great Lake Swimmers lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist Tony Dekker to see how they're progressing on their as-yet-untitled seventh album. As has become the norm for the band, they've once again selected a somewhat unusual place to record: a decommissioned church in London, ON. Tony talks about how the space has influenced the album and the unique approach he describes as "reverse engineering." He also discusses the life-changing experience he had onboard a ship sailing through the Canadian arctic as part of the Canada C3 Expedition. The Elwins just released their third LP, Beauty Community, and as vocalist/guitarist Matthew Sweeney shares, the record is the band's most collective to date. He discusses the decision to re-tap producer Derek Hoffman this time around, pushing into the U.S. market, and more. Finally, author Mark Kearney joins us to talk about his latest book with co-author Randy Ray, called As the Years Go By... Conversations with Canada's Folk, Pop & Rock Pioneers. He tells us about the process of revising dozens of interviews with Canadian artists from past decades to compile the unique collection.

In addition to performing as a solo artist and one half of Harrow Fair, recording with the likes of Great Lake Swimmers and Sarah Slean, playing on film and TV scores, owning a record label, and running a music festival (whew...), Miranda Mulholland has recently adopted the roll of artist activist. Following a much-discussed speech to the Economic Club of Canada, she's been featured in outlets like the Globe and Mail and Canadian Musician, talking about the struggles faced by artists in today's music industry. She joins us here to talk about just that. Plus, we've got a pair of singer-songwriter interviews with Edmonton's Martin Kerr, an artist who's achieved some truly impressive feats like selling out a show at Edmonton's Winspear Centre and opening for Sarah McLachlan at Rogers Place as an entirely independent artist, and Justin Giles, a finalist from CBC Searchlight 2017 (as chosen by our own Andrew King) and currently has a lot cooking for her career.

The Toronto-based quintet began as a vehicle for Tony Dekker's softly sung and sweetly rendered songs and grew into a formidable, intuitive folk outfit. The band plays an acoustic set of three songs from its latest, A Forest of Arms, and Dekker expands on the band's relationship to its physical environment, both in and out of the studio. Songs performed are "Something Like a Storm," "Don't Leave Me Hanging" and "Zero in the City." Recorded on June 21, 2015 at KDHX in St. Louis, Missouri. Engineered by Andy Coco.
