To kick off the fourth season of “Hark! The stories behind our favorite Christmas carols” we're embarking on an adventure to learn about an American-born carol that features some classic nativity characters—figures that, though very familiar to us, we know little about. It's a Christmas song that begins on a plodding, somber note and erupts into a thrilling epiphany. We're exploring “We Three Kings.” To help us understand who the magi were—at least from the perspective of Matthew's Gospel— host Maggi Van Dorn invites Eric Vanden Eykel, author of The Magi: Who They Are, How They've Been Remembered, and Why They Still Fascinate and Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Ferrum College. The magi's gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh have long been viewed as symbolic of Jesus' kingship, divinity and humanity, but how were these two herbs used in antiquity? Maggi learns about their earliest uses from Emiliana Patrick, a fourth year doctoral student in Classical Chinese Medicine at Daoist Traditions College in Asheville, North Carolina. To trace the star the magi followed, Maggi turns to the director of the Vatican's observatory, Guy Consolmagno, S.J., a Jesuit brother. Finally, to better appreciate the musical genius of the carol's composition, she speaks with ContraForce, a folk metal band known for their eclectic range of musical styles at contra dances, who specially created an instrumental rendition of “We Three Kings,”specially for “Hark!,” that is woven throughout the episode. The music featured in this episode is courtesy of ContraForce, Michael Logozar, Cynthia Boener, Dante Bucci, the Lee siblings of the Seasons band, Jeff Black and Lotos Nile Music. Special thanks to Jim Bilodeau, our sound engineer, and Jonathan Reid Gealt for lending their vocal talent. I have been a fan of Jeff Black's songwriting for many years. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri and grew up in Liberty, Missouri. In the 1980's Black began performing at Blayney's, a blues club here in Kansas City where he also worked as a bouncer. Jeff began touring and eventually relocated to Nashville where he re-connected with Kansas City friend, Iris Dement lending some backing vocals on DeMent's 1992 debut album, Infamous Angel). Black's own first album, Birmingham Road, was recorded with the members of the band Wilco, minus lead singer, Jeff Tweedy. Those songs have been described as "fine portraits of American life without the sappiness or self-consciousness often attributed to the singer/songwriter genre.” Sam Bush has championed him with recording many of his songs including "Same Ol' River" and "King Of The World". Jeff co-wrote the title track to Sam's Grammy nominated album "Circles Around Me". His songs appear on recordings by Alison Krauss, Waylon Jennings, Jerry Douglas, Dierks Bently, John Oates, Blackhawk, Jo-el Sonnier and the soundtracks of "The Thing Called Love" The acclaimed PBS documentary "The Appalachians" and Sundance Film Festival's Grand Jury Prize Winner "Steel City". WUMB Boston listeners voted Black one of the top 100 Folk artists of the last 25 years. His intimate live shows provide a master class in songcraft appreciation, tempo and audience interaction. After a two year pandemic induced hiatus, I was finally able to welcome Jeff back into the KKFI studios for a sit down conversation and private mini concert in support of some recent Midwest gigs. We talked about music education, or the lack thereof, the pandemic, of course, collaboration, mentorship and the value (or not) of songwriting workshops. Enjoy this musical conversation and performance with the lyrical and very talented Jeff Black.

Today I am very excited to have Jeff Black on the show. Jeff found his passion for health and fitness through his own journey with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (O.I.) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by bones that break easily, often from little or no apparent cause. The disease affects roughly 25,000 people in the U.S. Depending on the severity of the disease, and those afflicted may have just a few or as many as several hundred fractures in a lifetime. By the time he was fourteen years old, Jeff had endured eighteen surgeries on his legs to allow him to walk. His journey into health and fitness began the moment a physical therapist handed him a weight to help make his upper body stronger to utilize his wheelchair and crutches better. From that moment, he was hooked on the empowerment working out gave him, and he knew his life would never be the same. He knew at a young age that if he gave his all, he could accomplish anything. Walking, without any aids, would be his first accomplishment. Since then, Jeff has continued to defy the odds by competing in bodybuilding since 2006. Each year, he steadily improves his physique and conditioning, having placed in the top 5 in all his local and regional shows with his highest placing nationally in 2017 Junior Nationals, having earned 2nd in his weight class. In 2013, Jeff linked up with Jason Theobald, who has remained Jeff's coach and developed into mentoring Jeff. Jeff understands that when a person has belief, passion, and grit, anything can be realized and accomplished. When those three collide, great things happen, and Jeff tries to create this for each of his clients. Passion for their goals. Belief in themselves. Grit to accomplish anything. Jeff prides himself on his top-notch customer communication and care. These two are critical to accomplishing and achieving the best you, no matter your goal. Currently, Jeff is a personal trainer and fitness coach with clients both online and in personal training sessions. With over 15 years of experience, he has enjoyed working with his clients on their journey to improve their well-being with healthy dieting, nutrition, and fitness training. Jeff owns a gym in Hermitage, TN, called Iron House Strength and Conditioning where his goal is to create a facility that is a "fitness factory" appealing to everyone. Diversity is the cornerstone of this facility, a place where all are welcomed and encouraged. Jeff believes that health and fitness are the most important things people should strive to control to live fulfilling lives. As Jeff always tells his clients, "To make a healthy change not only physically, but mentally as well, you must be relentless to making this happen for you. Empower yourself and become you unapologetically. It is time to look at yourself in the mirror and be your hero.” Jeff has a student heart and a real passion for pursuing continued knowledge, education, and wisdom through various and opposing points to understand key concepts to create an impact in his community and with the community at large.
