“Why can't anybody hear me?!”The Fascinating Origins of a Classic Horror FilmIn the early 1960s, director Herk Harvey stumbled upon an abandoned amusement park in Salt Lake City, sparking the idea for what would become the classic horror film Carnival of Souls. With a shoestring budget and a cast of mostly unknown actors, Harvey set out to capture the haunting atmosphere of that desolate park. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off the One-and-Done series with a conversation about Harvey's 1962 film Carnival of Souls.Exploring the Liminal Space Between Life and DeathOur discussion of Carnival of Souls delves into the film's unique storytelling approach and its exploration of the space between life and death. We examine how the protagonist, Mary Henry (played by Candace Hilligoss), navigates this liminal space after surviving a tragic car accident, and how her experiences blur the lines between reality and the supernatural.Throughout our conversation, we touch on:The effective use (overuse?) of organ music and striking visual imageryThe ambiguity of certain scenes and their room for interpretationThe film's influence on later horror moviesA Timeless Classic That Continues to CaptivateDespite its low budget and relatively unknown cast, Carnival of Souls has endured as a classic of the horror genre. Its haunting imagery, ambiguous storytelling, and exploration of existential themes continue to captivate audiences decades after its initial release. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. Today the girls cover one of Drusilla's favorites, 1962's Carnival of Souls. From wiki: “Carnival of Souls is a 1962 American psychological horror film[3] produced and directed by Herk Harvey and written by John Clifford[1] from a story by Clifford and Harvey, and starring Candace Hilligoss. Its plot follows Mary Henry, a young woman whose life is disturbed after a car accident. She relocates to a new city, where she finds herself unable to assimilate with the locals and becomes drawn to the pavilion of an abandoned carnival. Director Harvey also appears in the film as a ghoulish stranger who stalks her throughout.[4] The film is set to an organ score by Gene Moore. “ But first! Drusilla changes jobs, the writers' strike continues with horror writer and queer pickets. Josh went to the anniversary screening of Ghost World with Thora Birch in person. Also mentioned: Airheads, The Seventh Seal, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, Ted Lasso, Philadelphia, Harold & Maude, Margot at the Wedding, Noah Baumbach, Frances Ha, White Noise, Crimes of Passion, Dark Shadows, Haunting of Bly Manor. NEXT WEEK: Rosemary's Baby (1968)Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.comDrusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/ Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/ Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/Joshua's Twitter: https://twitter.com/JoshuaConkelJoshua's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel

In our final installment of the first annual edition of Spooktober Spooktacular, we get lost trying to catch our bearings within the shoestring labyrinth of Herk Harvey's single feature film, Carnival of Souls. But before we get there...this week's Blue Plate Special finds us digging through the sugar, *spice*, and everything nice associated with the recently released adaptation of one of science fiction literature's crown jewels, Dune. After digging our way out from under the sandworms, we gleefully plunge ourselves into the inviting abyss of our 1962 subject film, a haunting cult classic that should've been the beginning of a long and fruitful career for its director but instead slowly found its audience amongst late night channel surfers and the midnight movie faithful. As fate would have it, its haunting aura is one that's endured for six decades now: good luck exorcising its power anytime soon. The first and only feature film by producer/director Herk Harvey, Carnival Of Souls was made under a quick timetable and with little money; like the German Expressionist films it borrows from, this movie relies heavily upon inexpensive atmospheric elements that are supposed to showcase the psychological interiority of its characters. It made little impact upon its initial release, but Carnival Of Souls instantly fell into the public domain due to a clerical error and it gradually grew a cult audience due to its prevalence in late night TV broadcasts, cut rate home video releases, and frequent screenings at horror movie festivals in independent theaters during October. Ryan is joined by Sylvan and Cheryl for this dialogue. Discussion topics include Candace Hilligoss' anchoring performance, interpreting Carnival Of Souls through feminist film theory, and how the struggles of the movie's protagonist have parallels to living as a neurodivergent person. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ryan-valentine3/support
