As the journals of the American writer Joan Didion (based on conversations with her psychiatrist) are published, writer and journalist Rachel Cooke and Alan Taylor, editor of actor Alan Rickman's diaries, discuss the challenges, responsibilities and ethics of posthumously publishing the diaries of great writers, artists and actors. Acclaimed German pianist Pianist Igor Levit talks about his own challenge - that of performing Erik Satie's pioneering piece Vexations, in a performance at the Multitudes arts festival at London's Southbank Centre. The performance is directed by leading performance artist Marina Abramovic and is expected to last approximately 15 hours, as Levit repeats Satie's one-page score 840 times. And how should great women be memorialised? Cultural critic Stephen Bayley and author and activist Sara Sheridan discuss what a memorial to Queen Elizabeth II might look like, and why, in comparison to their male counterparts, so few women have grand memorials in our towns and cities. Presenter: Kirsty Wark Producer: Mark Crossan

Was liest du? Welcome to an interview with the authors of Fair Shake: Women and the Fight to Build a Just Economy, Naomi Cahn, June Carbone, and Nancy Levit. This book explains that the system that governs our economy—a winner-take-all economy—is the root cause of these myriad problems. The WTA economy self-selects for aggressive, cutthroat business tactics, which creates a feedback loop that sidelines women. The authors, three legal scholars, call this feedback loop “the triple bind”: if women don't compete on the same terms as men, they lose; if women do compete on the same terms as men, they're punished more harshly for their sharp elbows or actual misdeeds; and when women see that they can't win on the same terms as men, they take themselves out of the game (if they haven't been pushed out already). With odds like these stacked against them, it's no wonder women feel like, no matter how hard they work, they can't get ahead.   Naomi Cahn is the Justice Anthony M. Dmitry Levit, General Partner of Cento Ventures, Shiyan Koh, Managing Partner of Hustle Fund, and Jeremy Au talked about three main themes: 1. 2023 vs. 2024 Investment Landscape: Dmitry, Shiyan and Jeremy discussed the Cento Southeast Asia Tech 2023H1 report and noted the discrepancy between the economic doom perception in the media and the reality of Southeast Asia's funding numbers. Dmitry pointed out a "reset" in investment activity, with stable "core early funding stack" (Seed to Series A/B) maintaining momentum while later-stage growth deals significantly decreased. This bifurcation reflects a broader trend of cautious optimism among early-stage investors and a recalibration of expectations among late-stage financiers. They also underscored the importance of understanding these two parallel ecosystems for founders and investors alike, suggesting that strategies need to be adjusted depending on the stage of investment. 2. $9B Annual Capital Intake & Realistic Exit Expectations: Dmitry Levit observed that the long-term average capital intake for the region averages around $9 billion. He highlighted that prudent exit expectations in Southeast Asia should consider $100 million exits as very good, with exceptional cases potentially exceeding $250 million, and added further details on the growth rate. He emphasized the importance of disciplined fund strategies across IPO, trade sales, and secondaries. 3. Overreaction, Dislocation & Confusion: They discussed the fog of war in the region's tech ecosystem driven by global economic pressures, media hype and doom cycles, and changing investment flows. Missed opportunities, strategy-market misalignments, and pressure on value-creation teams are currently being sorted out. They discussed how founders and investors need to urgently align their growth and exit strategies with the region's market's realities. They also talked about the time lag of news absorption across the Vietnam ecosystem and how the search for the next "Indonesia" story is on pause. Dmitry, Shiyan and Jeremy also talked about the role of perception vs. reality in shaping investment strategies, the challenges for the multi-country expansion narrative, and the "small-cap private equity without leverage" VC theme in play. (special thanks for TLV Salon for organizing this event! check them out at: https://www.tlvsalon.com) *** About a month ago, in early November, several families of the hostages taken by Hamas on Oct 7th gathered at the Levinsky-Wingate Academic Center for a special evening. There was no agenda, no politicians, no diplomats, just the families, a piano and Igor Levit. Levit is a world renowned pianist who's been described as “one of the great musicians of his generation”. He was born in a city called Gorky in the Soviet Union to a Jewish family. In 1995 his family moved to Germany where he lives today, in Berlin. Igor Levit is one of the most prominent, young musicians in both Germany and around the world. After Oct 7th as the war began and antisemitism raged around the world, Igor was faced with the question: what can I, a pianist, do for my people? And Igor's answer didn't come without risks. Igor Levit won the silver medal at the 2005 Rubinstein competition and has graced concert halls and major classical music festivals worldwide with his performances. His distinguished recordings, including the complete Beethoven sonatas and acclaimed albums of varied compositions, have garnered widespread praise. We are thrilled and honored to be joined by Igor Levit on this live episode of The Two Nice Jewish Boys Podcast here at SOHO House Tel Aviv. We'll be talking to Igor about his life, his career and what the hell he's doing in Israel.

Having seen thousands of patients with dementia, whether it's Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal lobe dementia, Lewy Body Dementia and others, we feel it's our responsibility to share evidence based data as opposed to feel-good, self confirming anecdotes.
