Im Religionsunterricht haben wir in unserer IVK (Internationale Vorbereitungsklasse / Flüchtlinge) das Gleichnis vom Barmherzigen Samariter behandelt. Barit (Name geändert), der 2017 von Kabul (Afghanistan) nach Deutschland kam, ist heute 18 Jahre alt. In seiner Heimat wurde er von den Taliban entführt und an der Waffe ausgebildet, konnte aber fliehen. Bei einem zweiten Entführungsversuch verhinderte nur die Menschenmenge vor Barits Schule, dass er ein weiteres Mal verschleppt wurde. Die Familie beschloss daraufhin, das Land zu verlassen. Über Russland setzten sie sich in Richtung Europa ab, um weitere Entführungen durch die Taliban zu verhindern. Auf der Flucht jedoch verlor Barit irgendwo in Russland seine Eltern und hat bis heute keinen Kontakt mehr zu ihnen gehabt. Das Deutsche Rote Kreuz versucht derzeit, die Eltern ausfindig zu machen und eine Verbindung herzustellen – bislang vergeblich.Zum Gleichnis des Barmherzigen Samariters schreibt Barit: »Sie (der Priester und der Levit) hätten helfen müssen. … Wenn ich einen Überfall sehe, dann reagiere ich. Ich gehe zu dem Überfallenen und helfe ihm, so gut ich kann, weil ich das durch Jesus und die Bibel gelernt habe. Egal, ob wir einen Menschen oder ein Tier in Not sehen, gebietet die Nächstenliebe uns, zu helfen.«Ist es nicht bewegend, wenn Schüler, die viel Leid erlebten, Jesus kennenlernen und auch verstehen, worauf es ihm ankam? Sydney Levit was 17 years old when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Like most kids his age, he was eager to serve. In 1943, Levit was drafted into the U.S. Army and he soon had the opportunity to join the airborne, training as a paratrooper and also with gliders. He became part of the 17th Airborne Division.In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Levit describes the rigorous training he went through as part of the airborne, including his first jump out of an airplane and learning how gliders work. He then explains how his unit spent months training in England, waiting to enter the fight. Their first action was at Malmedy and was both vicious and chaotic.Levit details the logistical fight against the Germans at the Bulge and the separate struggle against the brutal and unrelenting cold that was also a daily fight to stay alive.Then, Levit takes us into Operation Varsity, the massive airborne campaign designed to help the Allies cross the Rhine River. Yet, very few Americans are even aware of it.Levit also shares memorable moments away from the fighting, including his interactions with prisoners, being stunned by the death of President Roosevelt, and being surprised when a Hollywood star just popped into his tent.

Your mid-century house, and mine - just like  13 million solid ranches, tidy Levit cottages and charming post and beam homes built across the US between 1945 and 65 - might not strike you as "public housing." But they ARE our country's solution to a housing crisis. Post-war Britain, profoundly affected by the German Blitz and widespread destruction,  embarked on a different path. Since 2015 Creon Levit has worked at Planet Labs, where he is the Chief Technologist, Director or R&D, and a Planet Fellow. Prior to that, he worked at NASA Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley, where he was one of the founders of the NAS (NASA Advanced Supercomputing) division, co-PI on the Virtual Wind Tunnel project, co-founder of the NASA Molecular Nanotechnology Group (the first federally funded research lab devoted to molecular nanotechnology), co-PI on the hyperwall project, investigator on the Columbia accident investigation board, member of the NASA engineering and safety center, investigator on the millimeter-wave thermal rocket project, the Stardust re-entry observation campaign, PI on the LighForce project, special assistant to the center director, and chief scientist for the programs and projects directorate.

Welcome to an interview with the authors of Fair Shake: Women and the Fight to Build a Just Economy, Naomi Cahn, June Carbone, and Nancy Levit. This book explains that the system that governs our economy—a winner-take-all economy—is the root cause of these myriad problems. The WTA economy self-selects for aggressive, cutthroat business tactics, which creates a feedback loop that sidelines women. The authors, three legal scholars, call this feedback loop “the triple bind”: if women don't compete on the same terms as men, they lose; if women do compete on the same terms as men, they're punished more harshly for their sharp elbows or actual misdeeds; and when women see that they can't win on the same terms as men, they take themselves out of the game (if they haven't been pushed out already). With odds like these stacked against them, it's no wonder women feel like, no matter how hard they work, they can't get ahead.   Naomi Cahn is the Justice Anthony M. Kennedy Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Virginia School of Law, as well as the Co-Director of the Family Law Center. Cahn is the author or editor of numerous books written for both academic and trade publishers, including Red Families v. Blue Families and Homeward Bound. In 2017, Cahn received the Harry Krause Lifetime Achievement in Family Law Award from the University of Illinois College of Law and in 2024 she was inducted into the Clayton Alumni Hall of Fame.    June Carbone is the Robina Chair of Law, Science and Technology at the University of Minnesota Law School. Previously she has served as the Edward A. Smith/Missouri Chair of Law, the Constitution and Society at the University of Missouri at Kansas City; and as the Associate Dean for Professional Development and Presidential Professor of Ethics and the Common Good at Santa Clara University School of Law. She has written From Partners to Parents and co-written Red Families v. Blue Families; Marriage Markets; and Family Law. She is a co-editor of the International Survey of Family Law.   Nancy Levit is the Associate Dean for Faculty and holds a Curator's Professorship at the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Law. Professor Levit has been voted Outstanding Professor of the Year five times by students and was profiled in Dean Michael Hunter Schwartz's book, What the Best Law Teachers Do. She has received the N.T. Veatch Award for Distinguished Research and Creative Activity and the Missouri Governor's Award for Teaching Excellence.
