We celebrate the 40th anniversary of KISS's Asylum album by taking a look at the Bruce Kulick era of KISS.In 1984, after a series of revolving door guitarists came and went, Bruce Kulick became the permanent lead guitarist for the band during their non-makeup era and brought some stability to the veteran band. He also helped bridge the gap between the group's classic sound and the 80s "hair metal" sound that was hip and "rad" at the time.Jeff Hogland (Classic Rock Bottom) and me take a deep dive into the 5 studio albums that Mr. Kulick recorded with KISS: Asylum, Crazy Nights, Hot In The Shade, Revenge and Carnival Of Souls. And of course, we get into all the backstage drama and shenanigans that goes along with KISS in the 80s and 90s.Just don't look too closely at the band's Asylum-era stage outfits, because, well...they don't say that Gene Simmons looked like Golden Girl Bea Arthur for nothing!

Low key young adult paranormal action thriller is mostly forgettable, the cast are at least convincing in an all too familiar and not well directed premise with an even worse soundtrack. I rewatched after not seeing it since original release, enjoy my reasonably fair rundown with minimum spoilers. SOUL SURVIVORS (2001)Directed by Stephen Carpenter starring Eliza Dushku, Melissa Sagemiller, Wes Bently, Casey Affleck, Luke Wilson.

Today's episode covers 1962's “Carnival of Souls”, another all time favorite of mine. Ghost Dance for the Organ Girl: Herk Harvey's Carnival of Souls This week Mr. Chavez & I continue our celebration of the Halloween season with a little-seen and incredibly influential cult film from 1962, Herk Harvey's Carnival of Souls. This is truly discovering diamonds in the landfill. Herk Harvey - a director and producer of industrial and educational films based in Lawrence, Kansas - would create one of the most influential films in cinema that would, somehow, remain almost completely unknown. Harvey's film would be dismissed upon its intitial 1962 release, but would find an audience through television screenings (it was in the public domain) and public arthouse screenings beginning in 1989. Watching the film, it is easy to see Harvey's influence on such varied directors as David Lynch and James Wan, however its strongest influence seems to be on George A. Romero's first zombie film, NIght of the Living Dead. Take a listen as I introduce this forgotten classic to Mr. Chavez and we dig into the power of its images, sound design, and story. It's a fun talk. As always, we can be reached at gondoramos@yahoo.com - Many Thanks. For those of you who would like to donate to this undying labor of love, you can do so with a contribution at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/watchrickramos - Anything and Everything is appreciated, You Cheap Bastards.

We talk about this low budget classic from 1962!
“Why can't anybody hear me?!”The Fascinating Origins of a Classic Horror FilmIn the early 1960s, director Herk Harvey stumbled upon an abandoned amusement park in Salt Lake City, sparking the idea for what would become the classic horror film Carnival of Souls. With a shoestring budget and a cast of mostly unknown actors, Harvey set out to capture the haunting atmosphere of that desolate park. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off the One-and-Done series with a conversation about Harvey's 1962 film Carnival of Souls.Exploring the Liminal Space Between Life and DeathOur discussion of Carnival of Souls delves into the film's unique storytelling approach and its exploration of the space between life and death. We examine how the protagonist, Mary Henry (played by Candace Hilligoss), navigates this liminal space after surviving a tragic car accident, and how her experiences blur the lines between reality and the supernatural.Throughout our conversation, we touch on:The effective use (overuse?) of organ music and striking visual imageryThe ambiguity of certain scenes and their room for interpretationThe film's influence on later horror moviesA Timeless Classic That Continues to CaptivateDespite its low budget and relatively unknown cast, Carnival of Souls has endured as a classic of the horror genre. Its haunting imagery, ambiguous storytelling, and exploration of existential themes continue to captivate audiences decades after its initial release. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. This week Tom & Zeus review the 1997 grunge influenced KISS album, "Carnival Of Souls: The Final Sessions" This was KISS' 17th studio album and the 22nd KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. Carnival Of Souls is a very polarizing KISS album. The album was recorded with the Revenge era KISS lineup right before the KISS Reunion. However, it was not released immediately. Bootleg copies of the album were wildly circulated and the band then decided to release the album on October 28, 1997. The band did not promote the album, nor tour on the album. It also was deemed to be KISS trying to be grunge. The album was produced by Alice In Chains producer, Toby Wright. The songs were dark and heavy with a lot of grunge like qualities. This may have suited the Revenge era KISS, especially Gene Simmons, but not Paul Stanley. This ended up becoming the last non-makeup KISS album and the last album with Bruce Kulick as well. This is the only album to feature Bruce Kulick on lead vocals on a KISS song, the last track on the album, "I Walk Alone." As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. Find out who loves this album and who calls this album "Music From The Elder Part Two" and if that's a positive thing. Oh and don't miss the discussion of another Gene Simmons classic song title. This week on America's Podcast, we have podcast royalty with Chris Czynszak from "The Decibel Geek Podcast" and Nate Atchison from "The Plug Music and More Podcast." With four Kiss nerds and a casual fan, this is going to be a blast for Kiss nerds. Or is it? We review "Carnival of Souls: The Final Sessions." Did it live up to the hype? Or is it an album that we hate? Well, no spoilers, but this is a must-listen for any type of Kiss fan, even the haters. Now, let's talk about the tracks of the week. Chris chose "Dreamer of The Dawn" by Crown Lands, Jerry went with "Bad Seamstress Blues" by Cinderella, Mooger Fooger picked "Karma" by Sevendust, Marc selected "Neurotica" by Rush, and we end with Bushy's choice of "Decent" by Orbit Culture. So, until next week, why not smoke a huge doobie and chill? Just kidding, but hey, whatever floats your boat! #kiss #carnivalofsouls #90s #rock #kisstory

They drive this car straight off a bridge and into a discussion including: powerful hand acting, how many sips it takes to get to the bottom of a spiked mug, comparisons to this film's more-famous contemporaries, and the dangers of Organ Rock 'n Roll. Not to mention: fun transitions, gorgeous aesthetics, that ambiguous ending, and what exactly is the landlady's name...Find a dance partner and cut in! Will this pod finally admit it's under water or will we keep harassing retail employees until it's obvious? Thanks for listening! Twitter/ Instagram: @nighthowlspod

This week Terry and Paul round out the last of their detours before starting season 2 of the 1980's Twilight Zone by looking at a film that could have been an episode of the original series with 1962's Carnival of Souls. Miss Mary Henry, the recent survivor of a car crash, heads west for a job opportunity and for a fresh start. Once there, she feels compelled to go to an odd structure on the edge of the Great Salt Lake and to see who or what is inside...
We hit an unprecedented triple Bingo and declared it was time for a little treat — in the form of each of us picking a movie we love (NOT a box-office champ!) to share with the group. Hosts Josh and Jamie and special guest Branson Reese discuss the barrier between animation/live-action with a violent, horny, slapstick double feature of Robert Zemeckis' masterful ToonNoir technical achievement of merging the Golden Age of Animation and the history of Hollywood noir films in WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT (1988) and Ralph Bakshi's blatant, flawed and compromised knockoff of it in COOL WORLD (1992). Today the girls cover one of Drusilla's favorites, 1962's Carnival of Souls. From wiki: “Carnival of Souls is a 1962 American psychological horror film[3] produced and directed by Herk Harvey and written by John Clifford[1] from a story by Clifford and Harvey, and starring Candace Hilligoss. Its plot follows Mary Henry, a young woman whose life is disturbed after a car accident. She relocates to a new city, where she finds herself unable to assimilate with the locals and becomes drawn to the pavilion of an abandoned carnival. Director Harvey also appears in the film as a ghoulish stranger who stalks her throughout.[4] The film is set to an organ score by Gene Moore. “ But first! Drusilla changes jobs, the writers' strike continues with horror writer and queer pickets. Josh went to the anniversary screening of Ghost World with Thora Birch in person. Also mentioned: Airheads, The Seventh Seal, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, Ted Lasso, Philadelphia, Harold & Maude, Margot at the Wedding, Noah Baumbach, Frances Ha, White Noise, Crimes of Passion, Dark Shadows, Haunting of Bly Manor. Bros Watch PLL Too - A Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists podcast
Imogen encourages Tabby to go to the cops about her assault, but isn't ready to go yet herself. Instead, she's doing the old, “high school project to take care of a fake baby with a romantic interest” plot line, which is extra gross because… you know. Mouse has more drama with her creepy LARPing dude Steve, and tricks her mom into revealing one of the more boring deep dark secrets imaginable. Faran is suddenly dealing with chronic pain and tells her mom off and is even more empowered and makes out with her dancer boyfriend. Whatever. Noa gets a physical trainer that might be encouraging her to juice. Tabby cooks up a new scheme to catch her rapist, rather than talking with a counselor about it.
