Having found myself on the wrong side of 55, I attempt to distract from this devastating realisation by responding to some Movie Monday feedback before indulging in a little retail therapy. First up is James Knight with a call about September's movie Richard Donner's Superman, then we have calls from Joe Richter of Hindsighless and MW Lewis of The Worlds of MW Lewis regarding the October choice Fred Dekker's Monster Squad. I mention a Dungeon Craft review of Chris McDowall's Mythic Bastionland that you can watch here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsJ5px6_8ew This is followed by that strangest of phenomena, the audio unboxing. I take a peek inside Free League's new Vaesen Starter Set, Casey Garske's Stay Frost Remastered, Loke Battle Mats' Dungeon Designer's Deck (as featured on Geek Gamers) and Diogo Nogueira's Screams Amongst The Stars. Check out the Dungeon Designer's Deck here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FuEq0yen-Y This month's Movie Monday is 1984's animated pre-Ghibli classic Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Send us a textThe Monster Squad (1987) is what happens when a bunch of middle school monster nerds decide to take on Dracula, the Wolfman, and the rest of Universal's greatest hits — armed mostly with sarcasm, bike helmets, and the power of friendship. The film was unfairly dismissed when it came out, possibly because audiences weren't ready for a movie where a kid yells, “Wolfman's got nards!” and somehow, it becomes cinematic poetry.Over the years, The Monster Squad has crawled out of its coffin and earned its cult status — a true hidden gem for anyone who loves practical effects, 80s charm, and kids who apparently skipped all adult supervision. It's equal parts monster mash and love letter to classic horror, proving that sometimes the movies we ignored at the box office are the ones that stick around in our undead hearts forever.
We wrap up Halloween Month with our traditional cross over episode with Roy's Tie-Dye Sci-Fi Corner! Roy and Ross will join us, in costume, to discuss 1987s Monster Squad. You know who you are gonna call for Ghosts, but what about Monsters!?
The monster squad the best monster movie ever
Can a Gang of Kids Really Save the World from Classic Monsters?Welcome to this episode of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast, where hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell venture into completely new territory with The Monster Squad (1987)—a film neither had seen before. This nostalgic cult classic brings together Universal's greatest monsters in what should be the ultimate horror crossover, but does it hold up without those rose-tinted glasses of childhood? Join these first-time viewers as they dissect whether the magic works when you're encountering Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, and the Wolfman for the first time as adults.Coming at The Monster Squad cold, both hosts find themselves intrigued by the premise but puzzled by the execution. While the movie looks great and delivers some genuinely fun moments—like Dracula's lightning-rod cane and the mummy's slow-motion chase scenes—they struggle to connect with characters who feel more like archetypes than actual kids. The film's reliance on nostalgia for both 1980s adventure films and classic Universal monsters creates a double-edged sword: those with childhood memories may overlook its flaws, but newcomers are left wondering why the scary German neighbor is so accommodating and where all that dynamite came from. Still, they appreciate the earnest effort and Shane Black's co-writing credits, ultimately landing on a solid 6 out of 10 rating.Additional insights from the discussion:The problematic language choices feel particularly jarring to modern ears, even accounting for 1980s contextFat Kid's pizza-as-weapon moment raises questions about just how sensitive vampires are to garlicThe film's treatment of individual monsters feels uneven, with Wolfman getting a complete arc while the Mummy serves mainly as comic reliefFrankenstein's redemption and the portal mechanics create unexpectedly emotional momentsThe army showing up because of a letter written in crayon perfectly captures the film's toneBoth hosts acknowledge that The Monster Squad clearly resonates with those who grew up watching it, even if it didn't quite capture their adult hearts. The movie delivers on spectacle and has undeniable charm, making it a worthwhile watch for anyone curious about this slice of 1980s monster movie nostalgia.Want more retro movie magic? Send us a textWe remember loving this movie, and what's not to love? It has all the Classic Monsters. Dracula? Check. Wolfman? Check. Frankenstein? Check. A Mummy? Check. That Lizard thing from a Lagoon? Check. Throw in a bunch of kids trying to fight to save a town that doesn't believe in monsters, as stranger and stranger things keep happening all around them. Now that is a recipe for a fun Halloween movie. Or it is a totally lame 80s movie that bombed for a reason.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

The story so far: After a year and a half underground, we've made it to the best time of the year! Sadly, we've hit the end of Sellout October 2025! During October, we watch mainstream horror movies that people have heard of before. And after trick-or-mole-treating around Mole City, we were gifted a film as a little treat, and it turned out to be The Monster Squad from 1987! It's a first time watch for one of us (can you guess who?!), and we bask in the glory of Stan Winston's amazing costumes, discuss the constant necessity of virgins in horror, talk way too much about foreskin, and just shower this movie with love! As Sellout October comes to an end, we hope you all have the spookiest of Halloweens!!!Leave us a 30 second voicemail and if we like it we'll play it on the show: (949) 4-STABBY (949-478-2229)Next movie announced every Wednesday. This week Josh and Drusilla discuss the baby of the Universal Monsters, Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954). From wiki: “Creature from the Black Lagoon is a 1954 American black-and-white 3D monster horror film produced by William Alland and directed by Jack Arnold, from a screenplay by Harry Essex and Arthur Ross and a story by Maurice Zimm. It stars Richard Carlson, Julia Adams, Richard Denning, Antonio Moreno, Nestor Paiva, and Whit Bissell. The film's plot follows a group of scientists who encounter a piscine amphibious humanoid in the waters of the Amazon; the Creature, also known as the Gill-man, was played by Ben Chapman on land and by Ricou Browning underwater. Produced and distributed by Universal-International, Creature from the Black Lagoon premiered in Detroit on February 12, 1954, and was released on a regional basis, opening on various dates.”Also discussed: non-alcoholic spirits, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, and the Muppets, Matango (1963), Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell, Kill Bill, Monster Squad, and more, NEXT WEEK: Double Feature: The Black Cat (1934) and The Raven (1935) Bloodhaus:https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/https://letterboxd.com/bloodhaus/Drusilla Adeline:https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/@sisterhyde.bsky.socialJoshua Conkelhttps://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/
A group of 12-year-olds form a Universal Monsters fan club called Monster Squad, and have to attempt to save their hometown from Count Dracula and his monsters when they show up for real. The Monster Squad (1987) is a cult classic horror-comedy that blends childhood adventure with iconic monster mayhem. Directed by Fred Dekker and co-written with Shane Black, it's a nostalgic tribute to Universal's classic monsters with a Goonies-style twist.
THE MONSTER SQUAD brings the Universal Monsters of yore into the '80s with a healthy dose of sugar-blasted cereal and unmedicated ADHD. Directed by Fred Dekker (NIGHT OF THE CREEPS) & written by both Dekker and Shane Black (THE NICE GUYS, LETHAL WEAPON, KISS KISS BANG BANG, most of your favorite movies ever), this combined family drama, top-notch makeup effects and preteen comedy with unapologetic horror. Dracula calls a 5-year-old girl a bitch, because of course, he would? As was done to Freddy Kreuger in this decade, the Universal Monsters were sanitized into cereal mascots and plushies but Dekker and Black's script remind us not to be fooled. These are still vampires and werewolves, after all, ready to carve into flesh and crush whatever magic amulet threatens to lock them into Hell for good. So, who do you call to handle these beasts of death? A bunch of kids, obviously. The motherfuckin' Monster Squad.---Follow, rate and review THE MOVIES wherever you listen to podcasts!Follow THE MOVIES on Instagram, Bluesky & Letterboxd

Let's be honest: the '80s were a minefield for horror comedies. But for every Gremlins and Monster Squad, you had to suffer through duds like My Mom's A Werewolf or My Best Friend's a Vampire.A few films got the formula right, and one, in particular, became a cultural phenomenon. It wasn't about monsters in the closet or clowns from space—it was about basketball, best friends, and some serious growing pains. So, practice your jump shot, crank up the Beach Boys, and get ready to van surf as Tim Williams and guest co-hosts, Gerry D, JB Huffman, and Vinnie Brezinsky discuss Teen Wolf from 1985 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback podcast! Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode:Harold Howard tells Scott, "With great power comes an even greater responsibility," which is an expression usually associated with Spider-Man. Screenwriter Jeph Loeb was also a comic book writer, having written Spider-Man comics. When Scott talks to Coach Finstock about potentially quitting the basketball team (around the 06:00 mark), this conversation was actually meant to happen much later in the film after Scott's first "Wolf-Out." Most likely, it would be the day after (around time markers 33:00 - 45:00). The clue is in the shirt Scott is wearing. When Scott speaks with the Coach, his shirt is green and black plaid, but when he talks to Boof in the next scene (around the 8:00 mark), his shirt changes to blue. The day after his first "Wolf-Out" when Scott returns to school, he's wearing the green/black plaid shirt again. For some reason, the filmmakers thought the talk between Scott and the Coach would work better earlier in the film than right before he transforms in front of everyone during the game.Sources:Wikipedia, IMDBhttps://www.wickedhorror.com/top-horror-lists/five-reasons-why-teen-wolf-1985-is-totally-tubular/Some sections were composed by ChatGPTWe'd love to hear your thoughts on our podcast! All Horror October rolls on! This week we tackle “gateway horror” — the movies that first lured us into the world of scares, or the ones you'd put in front of a horror-curious kid today. Guest Garrett Wieland helps unpack the just-scary-enough that defines this subgenre. First up is Poltergeist (1982), Tobe Hooper's haunted-house classic that terrified a generation while still managing to be PG-rated. From cursed televisions to suburban dread, the guys dig into why this film remains a rite of passage for budding horror fans. Then the conversation shifts to The Monster Squad (1987), the cult favorite that mashed together classic Universal monsters with ‘80s kid adventure vibes, creating a bridge between nostalgia and nightmare fuel. As tradition dictates, we pop another oktoberfest — this time from Alstadt Brewing, delivering malty, fall-friendly comfort with every sip. And it's Beer and a Movie's first taste of Zilker Brewing, adding a fresh Austin flavor to the mix. Whether you grew up sneaking VHS tapes or you're looking for the perfect spooky-season introduction for the next generation, this gateway horror episode offers plenty of scares, laughs, and beers to go around
Come for the nostalgia, stay to get lost in the lore. Lindsey, Jay, and Ron talk about all these things and more with The Monster Squad (1987). Now with Video where available. #Shocktober #MonsterSquad

From his writing process… to feeling the very same “imposter syndrome” we all feel despite his many massive successes… to what goes in to creating a terrific protagonist and how he makes every character a memorable one despite the size of the role… to what it's like working with some of the greatest actors in Hollywood… to the cinema that inspired him and why many of his projects have had a Christmastime setting… to the production of PLAY DIRTY… to where the now iconic “Wolfman's got nards” line came from in his script for THE MONSTER SQUAD… to how he overcame his own demons and came roaring back, this conversation with one of the industry's most beloved giants is one that every filmmaker needs to hear. Watch PLAY DIRTY on Amazon Prime tonight!
Spoilers and monsters ahead, homies! Movie breakdown starts at 15:54. We're getting the homies together and going monster hunting, you in? Well you better be, because we've got quite the battle ahead of us as we tag along with The Monster Squad! Also, Erika and Roshane pick favorites.
We have another viewer request locked and loaded! We watched The Monster Squad, an off-brand monster movie, where kids take the helm. This movie is peak 80s chaos, and we have lots of thoughts. Actually, we may have only one thought that we repeatedly talk about. Listen: we aren't going to apologize for saying hymen more than any two people should in a short timespan. This is either the worst podcast episode we've ever released...or the best. Paired with a Black Hole cocktail. Rate! Review! Follow! This week, we're taking a deep dive into the very haunted history of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina—a small Southern town with more ghost stories per square mile than Salem, Savannah, or Charleston combined. Joined by local authors and tour guides Liz Z Pardue and Kelly Prestipino (also possibly haunted), we explore paranormal encounters, unsolved murders, witch lore, haunted cemeteries, and ghostly legends that make this town feel like a Southern-fried Stephen King theme park:•Stinky Pete: a spirit who alternates between smelling like cigars or B.O. (so basically your uncle at Thanksgiving).•Pauline: the mayor's widow who smuggled saplings out of the Biltmore Estate in coffee cans, built the best garden in town, and is now haunting people until someone finally gives her a damn plaque.•The Willow Spring Axe Murders: a dude kills his pregnant wife and kids, hides them under a cow, and then nopes out of town like it's a Scooby-Doo episode from hell.•Shadow people, deer with human eyes, and hitchhiking 90s mall kids who refuse your umbrella offer before disappearing into the void because that's normalWe also reminisce about the true horror of growing up in the 80s and 90s: getting handed Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark in elementary school libraries, staying up all weekend with USA slasher marathons, and learning that yes, Jaws is technically about local politics with bonus shark attacks. If you've ever thought, “Wow, Appalachia feels weird, but maybe it's just the trees,” this episode proves that nope—everything's haunted. The houses, the roads, the woods, even the damn drinking water is haunted. EXTRA GHOST CHAOS •Axe murders, witch lore & haunted history of Fuquay-Varina•Paranormal encounters with cigar-smoking ghosts & perfumed spirits•Appalachian weirdness, shadow people & why the woods suck•Parenting tips: why Monster Squad is fine for kids, but Gremlins will ruin Christmas foreverSo grab your flashlight, leave your umbrella at home (the ghosts don't want it), and join us for haunted history, true crime, and lots of looking over our shoulder cause it's probably haunted.CREEP-O-RAMA is:Fuquay-Varina Ghosts, Legends & Lore: https://a.co/d/atvkmUZStore: CREEP-O-RAMAYouTube: @creep-o-ramaJosh: @joshblevesqueArtwork: @bargainbinblasphemyTheme: @imfigureAudio:@stranjlove
