Phantoms of the Field: Kaneto Shindō's Onibaba From time to time, Mr. Chavez & I stumble on what can lovingly be referred to as "hidden cinematic gems". A few weeks ago we discovered (for ourselves, at least) a rarely seen "cult classic" - Herk Harvey's Carnival of Souls. As we continue our look into the Horror genre we discover another film that deserves much greater attention. In 1964 Japanese director, Kaneto Shindō directed a disturbing and rather compelling look into relationships strained by the struggles and horrors of war and the power and drive for survival. Onibaba is Shindo's examination of three people (two women - mother-in-law and daughter - and a man) living, suffering, and fighting for survival through a war-ravaged 14th Century Kyoto. Filmed in beautiful widescreen (2.35:1) Black & White, Shindō's film beautifully captures the war-ravaged countryside (overwhelmingly tall plant stalks) and the people who will murder samurai to survive one day at a time. The talk focuses on the movie, and - as always - steers into a discussion of emotion, humanity, fear, paranoia, and violence. Take a listen . . . it's a fun talk. Directing duo Arie and Chula Esiri tell two separate stories of would-be Nigerian emigrants navigating through a dehumanizing world that uses poverty and debt to perpetuate a cycle of exploitation that cares little for dignity and decency. Beautifully shot on film on location in Lagos, Mofe and Rosa each strain towards a better life. Ghost Dance for the Organ Girl: Herk Harvey's Carnival of Souls This week Mr. Chavez & I continue our celebration of the Halloween season with a little-seen and incredibly influential cult film from 1962, Herk Harvey's Carnival of Souls. This is truly discovering diamonds in the landfill. Herk Harvey - a director and producer of industrial and educational films based in Lawrence, Kansas - would create one of the most influential films in cinema that would, somehow, remain almost completely unknown. Harvey's film would be dismissed upon its intitial 1962 release, but would find an audience through television screenings (it was in the public domain) and public arthouse screenings beginning in 1989. Watching the film, it is easy to see Harvey's influence on such varied directors as David Lynch and James Wan, however its strongest influence seems to be on George A. Romero's first zombie film, NIght of the Living Dead. Take a listen as I introduce this forgotten classic to Mr. Chavez and we dig into the power of its images, sound design, and story. It's a fun talk. As always, we can be reached at gondoramos@yahoo.com - Many Thanks. “Why can't anybody hear me?!”The Fascinating Origins of a Classic Horror FilmIn the early 1960s, director Herk Harvey stumbled upon an abandoned amusement park in Salt Lake City, sparking the idea for what would become the classic horror film Carnival of Souls. With a shoestring budget and a cast of mostly unknown actors, Harvey set out to capture the haunting atmosphere of that desolate park. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off the One-and-Done series with a conversation about Harvey's 1962 film Carnival of Souls.Exploring the Liminal Space Between Life and DeathOur discussion of Carnival of Souls delves into the film's unique storytelling approach and its exploration of the space between life and death. We examine how the protagonist, Mary Henry (played by Candace Hilligoss), navigates this liminal space after surviving a tragic car accident, and how her experiences blur the lines between reality and the supernatural.Throughout our conversation, we touch on:The effective use (overuse?) of organ music and striking visual imageryThe ambiguity of certain scenes and their room for interpretationThe film's influence on later horror moviesA Timeless Classic That Continues to CaptivateDespite its low budget and relatively unknown cast, Carnival of Souls has endured as a classic of the horror genre. Its haunting imagery, ambiguous storytelling, and exploration of existential themes continue to captivate audiences decades after its initial release. ¡Gracias y feed the cvlt!

Today the girls cover one of Drusilla's favorites, 1962's Carnival of Souls. From wiki: “Carnival of Souls is a 1962 American psychological horror film[3] produced and directed by Herk Harvey and written by John Clifford[1] from a story by Clifford and Harvey, and starring Candace Hilligoss. Its plot follows Mary Henry, a young woman whose life is disturbed after a car accident. She relocates to a new city, where she finds herself unable to assimilate with the locals and becomes drawn to the pavilion of an abandoned carnival. Director Harvey also appears in the film as a ghoulish stranger who stalks her throughout.[4] The film is set to an organ score by Gene Moore. “ But first! Drusilla changes jobs, the writers' strike continues with horror writer and queer pickets. Josh went to the anniversary screening of Ghost World with Thora Birch in person. In our final installment of the first annual edition of Spooktober Spooktacular, we get lost trying to catch our bearings within the shoestring labyrinth of Herk Harvey's single feature film, Carnival of Souls. But before we get there...this week's Blue Plate Special finds us digging through the sugar, *spice*, and everything nice associated with the recently released adaptation of one of science fiction literature's crown jewels, Dune. After digging our way out from under the sandworms, we gleefully plunge ourselves into the inviting abyss of our 1962 subject film, a haunting cult classic that should've been the beginning of a long and fruitful career for its director but instead slowly found its audience amongst late night channel surfers and the midnight movie faithful. As fate would have it, its haunting aura is one that's endured for six decades now: good luck exorcising its power anytime soon. The first and only feature film by producer/director Herk Harvey, Carnival Of Souls was made under a quick timetable and with little money; like the German Expressionist films it borrows from, this movie relies heavily upon inexpensive atmospheric elements that are supposed to showcase the psychological interiority of its characters. It made little impact upon its initial release, but Carnival Of Souls instantly fell into the public domain due to a clerical error and it gradually grew a cult audience due to its prevalence in late night TV broadcasts, cut rate home video releases, and frequent screenings at horror movie festivals in independent theaters during October. Ryan is joined by Sylvan and Cheryl for this dialogue. Discussion topics include Candace Hilligoss' anchoring performance, interpreting Carnival Of Souls through feminist film theory, and how the struggles of the movie's protagonist have parallels to living as a neurodivergent person. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ryan-valentine3/support

This week we start by discussing Lisa Joy's platitude-filled sci-fi noir REMINISCENCE (2:14), starring Hugh Jackman. One of us enjoyed it, one thought it was "meh," and one found it utterly insufferable. Next, we cover David Lowery's epic fantasy film THE GREEN KNIGHT (18:29), starring Dev Patel as Gawain from Arthurian legend. Overall, we dug this gorgeous film that both honors the tale of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Next, we tackle Nia DaCosta's CANDYMAN (38:23), a sequel to the 1992 film, which features lots of visually stunning and unsettling moments, but two of us thought it didn't dig as deep into social commentary as it could have. And on this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about the winner of our amusement park movie poll, Herk Harvey's 1962 horror film CARNIVAL OF SOULS.
In this bonus episode we walk the fine line between life and death with 1962's Carnival Of Souls. Directed by Herk Harvey and written by Herk Harvey and John Clifford, Carnival Of Souls stars Candace Hilligoss, Frances Feist, Sidney Berger and Art Ellison. This is episode 221. In 1962, Herk Harvey saw a strange sight in Salt Lake City and was inspired to make a film called Carnival of Souls. It was a film made with a micro-budget, mostly filmed in Lawrence, Kansas with a little more in Utah. After being ripped off by a distribution company, the film fell into obscurity only to become a cult classic in the late 1980s.

Today I’ll be talking about a classic horror film, Carnival of Souls. Synopsis Carnival of Souls is a 1962 American independent horror film produced and directed by Herk Harvey and written by John Clifford from a story by Clifford and Harvey. It stars Candace Hilligoss as Mary Henry, a young woman who survives a car accident. She relocates to a Salt Lake City, where she finds herself unable to assimilate with the locals. She becomes drawn to the pavilion of an abandoned carnival and stalked by a ghoulish stranger. Love it, hate it, have a different interpretation of the ending? Tweet me @juncturepodcast.

This week hosts Zack Sokol and Caitlin Duffy explore Carnival of Souls (1962). They discuss the film's themes of American Gothic and the portrayal of gender dynamics. Produced by Zack Sokol, Caitlin Duffy, and Anthony Derington. A Something Ghoulish Podcast Theme Music by The Tormented Teamster

This week's Goodie sees young Simon recommend 'Carnival of Souls', a 1962 indie horror that went on to influence filmmakers like David Lynch and George A Romero. As Nadeem hasn't seen this film yet, he will simply copy and paste a handy synopsis right here: "Mary Henry (Candace Hilligoss) ends up the sole survivor of a fatal car accident through mysterious circumstances. Trying to put the incident behind her, she moves to Utah and takes a job as a church organist. But her fresh start is interrupted by visions of a fiendish man (Herk Harvey). As the visions begin to occur more frequently, Mary finds herself drawn to the deserted carnival on the outskirts of town. The strangely alluring carnival may hold the secret to her tragic past." Ooooh, exciting!

Herk Harvey’s 1962 masterpiece Carnival of Souls took us completely by surprise—despite the fact that Max had seen it probably a hundred times. We watched the Criterion Edition for this episode, and cannot recommend it highly enough: the transfer is absolutely remarkable, and allows the sharp edges of this masterwork of psychedelic, psychological horror cut you as they were meant to: deep and irrevocably, in the parts of yourself you’d always thought were safe…Patreon.com/QuillAndFilmMeasuringFlicksPodcast@gmail.com

Our first Final Girl contestant was Mychal -- so it's only fitting our second be Jackson. And -- despite sound issues (sorry) -- this one is indeed a thriller. We imbibe on a sweet 'n' spicy cocktail called The Organ Grindr, and we put Jackson through a trivia gauntlet on Herk Harvey's classic Carnival of Souls. Jackson is a scholar on the movie, but does he have what it takes to win the coveted title of Final Girl against our ruthless Eye Spy killer? Find out, kiddies!

This film was way ahead of its time in so many ways, and the influence on future filmmakers
It's the most ghoulish time of the year now that Halloween is here. In this episode, I explore Herk Harvey's 1962 cult horror classic "Carnival of Souls." The film tells the story of Mary Henry, a church organist who survives a car crash and is menaced by a zombie-like man. What makes "Carnival of Souls" so powerful and unforgettable for me is its narrative ambiguity, its complex portrait of Mary, and its exploration of loneliness, alienation, disconnection, and trauma. We return to a plane somewhere between life and death (and between horror and drama) to discuss David Lowery’s new A GHOST STORY, both on its own and in the context of Herk Harvey’s similar haunting and genre-defying CARNIVAL OF SOULS. We talk over how the two films tackle big, weighty concepts like the nature of time and the afterlife, as well as how their distinctive use of music contributes to their eeriness. Plus, Your Next Picture Show, where we share recent filmgoing experiences in hopes of putting something new on your cinematic radar. Inspired by David Lowery’s new A GHOST STORY, we’re looking back at another microbudget horror-drama that’s haunting in both the literal and puntastic sense: Herk Harvey’s creepy cult hit CARNIVAL OF SOULS, a 1962 oddity about a woman trapped somewhere between life and death who can’t ditch the strange figures following her. In this half of the discussion, we look for links to Harvey’s background in industrial filmmaking and interest in European cinema, contextualize the film’s strangely wooden performances, and consider just what makes this strange film work, seemingly against all odds. Plus, some feedback on recent episodes and a brief discussion of another pairing we discussed for this week. Take a deep breath, bring your zippo and remember to blink, it’s time to strap in and set the controls for Part 8... First, meet your copilot Clare Nina Norelli. Clare was already an accomplished writer about film sound, music and David Lynch before she wrote the book Soundtrack to Twin Peaks in which she tackles Lynch and Badalamenti's use of music in the first two seasons. All this, and analysis critics describe as being "from the heart" and "surprisingly decent." Shownotes: On this episode we mention Herk Harvey’s 1962 film Carnival of Souls and Gene Moore’s organ-heavy score. Like any self-respecting Lynch academic, Clare wrote about this film years ago and you can find her essay on the film and its soundtrack, which many attentive Twin Peaks viewers have mentioned influenced some scenes in Part 8, here - https://cinemaandsong.wordpress.com/2015/08/07/carnival-of-souls/ If you don’t already own a copy of Clare’s book, you can find out more about it and source a copy here - http://www.bloomsbury.com/au/angelo-badalamentis-soundtrack-from-twin-peaks-9781501323010/ The two sound nerds who carry around frequency analysers on a daily basis that Andy mentions are future guest of the show Jessica Pinney and Thembi Soddell, both currently engaged in researching sound and emotion at Melbourne's RMIT University. Mark, Aaron and Eric Ford begin a month of horror with the micro-budget cult classic, Carnival of Souls. We talk about what makes this such an enduring classic that has held up over time, the bizarre story about how it was made, its influences and what it has influenced, and what type of artistic aims the filmmakers tried to reach. About the film: A young woman in a small Kansas town survives a drag race accident, then agrees to take a job as a church organist in Salt Lake City. En route, she is haunted by a bizarre apparition that compels her toward an abandoned lakeside pavilion. Made by industrial filmmakers on a small budget, the eerily effective B-movie classic Carnival of Souls was intended to have “the look of a Bergman and the feel of a Cocteau”—and, with its strikingly used locations and spooky organ score, it succeeds. Herk Harvey's macabre masterpiece gained a cult following on late-night television and continues to inspire filmmakers today.

Carnival of Soul VS Jacob's ladder. Bouh.
