Carl Medearis, author and international expert in the field of Arab-American and Muslim-Christian relations, joins Justin Rossow to talk about the risks and adventure of extending and receiving hospitality in this episode of the Next Step Podcast. This whole season is dedicated to the resource Come, Holy Spirit daily discipleship travel log for Easter to Pentecost from Next Step Press. Following a brief introduction, Carl and Justin will talk about experiencing hospitality in the Middle East and in America, and about how Jesus both expressed and went beyond first-century, Middle Eastern hospitality. In the course of the conversation, Carl brings up Conrad Gempf's book Mealtime Habits of the Messiah. Carl's encouragement is that you take a small risk and extend or accept an invitation for getting together for food and conversation; Jesus doesn't need us to be in charge of extending his Kingdom, but we also are invited to experience that Kingdom at work through us. Carl has published several influential books you might find helpful in training your thinking for taking a small next step in the area of hospitality, including Adventures in Saying Yes: A Journey from Fear to Faith; 42 Seconds: The Jesus Model for Everyday Interactions; and my personal favorite, Speaking of Jesus: The Art of Not-Evangelism. (Using the paid links above supports the mission of Next Step Press). Next Step Press author and founder Justin Rossow prepared sermon and Bible study notes for Carl's 42 Seconds book. These resources are available for free download through the Next Step Press Patreon page. For an in-depth study of the conceptual metaphors in Speaking of Jesus, see the three-blog series that begins with "Outreach and Warfare," or for a perspective from the pulpit, see "How Speaking of Jesus Changed My Preaching." If you enjoyed Car's story about accepting hospitality from a Hezbollah leader, you will probably want to check out this video from a Michigan District pastors conference. Hospitality hinges on the boundary of IN vs OUT, so this video from Justin Rossow on "Jesus at the Leading Edge" from the same Michigan District pastors conference also fits our theme well. Violence continues to rage in the streets of major cities across our country like Portland, Oregon, where the impotent elected leaders sit by by pleading for the violence to stop-sitting on their hands as mayhem ensues. Chicago - ten people shot dead over the weekend and 60 more wounded in shootings across the city. In New York City last month, 205 shootings - the most violent June for the city in 24 years. Obviously, the elected officials of our land have resorted to an insane approach to the violence by passive pleas that only embolden the racist, hateful, violent people. God has a better way - the way that works. This podcast defines what racism is and how, through the power of God, we can dismantle it!"Speaking of Jesus: The Art of Not-Evangelism" by Carl Medearis, (David C. Cook Publisher) available on Amazon and other book retailers.CORRECTION! I pointed to the book of Romans with regards to the full of armor of God. My brain skipped a track when I was recording! You can find the full armor of God described in Ephesians 6:10-18. My show reviewer (my wife!) was staying over helping with our new grand-baby #3 and I posted it without her review (shame on me!) but, hey, in my defense, Paul also gives a brief reference to it in the book of Romans as well: Romans 13:12 "The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light." #racismPodcast email: gwot.rocks@transformthiscity.orgWebsite of the organization that produces gwot.rocks: http://www.transformthiscity.orgTo help support the podcast: http://www.transformthiscity.org/donateTransform This City is an IRS 501(C)(3) and your donation is tax deductible.Advance equilibrium in the midst of an agitated world-tell your family, friends and work associates about the podcast! 42 seconds. That’s all it took Jesus. 42 seconds. Carl Medearis in this book, 42 seconds, looked at every conversation Jesus had with anyone about anything in the four Gospels. Short or long. Deep and profound. Simple and menial. This is Lead Time.
Carl Medearis recounts a time when he used the story of the Good Father from Luke 15 to respond to a trick question about Israel on live Hezbollah television. “Jesus does funny things with trick questions. He either never answers them, he asks a better question back, or he tells a story that doesn’t make any sense—we call those parables.” The effect of the parable on the TV crew is striking, probably very like that of its effect on Jesus’ Middle Eastern listeners.

We drink. We talk. We movie. About the movie: Bruce Nolan's (Jim Carrey) career in TV has been stalled for a while, and when he's passed over for a coveted anchorman position, he loses it, complaining that God is treating him poorly. Soon after, God (Morgan Freeman) actually contacts Bruce and offers him all of his powers if he thinks he can do a better job. Bruce accepts and goes on a spree, using his new-found abilities for selfish, personal use until he realizes that the prayers of the world are going unanswered. One of Jesus' most famous commands is to "love our enemies." Do we dare obey such an unusual command? Do we dare disobey it? Today in America it is election day. So, in that vein, we'll talk some about our political enemies, and how we can obey Jesus' command to love our enemies. In the podcast I mentioned several things by Carl Medearis. Below are some links you can use to watch some of his talks. I highly recommend the following. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guzoSgd4GJY&t=1s http://carlmedearis.com/ You can also search his name on any podcast application and get to some great stories there as well.
42 Seconds. According to author Carl Medearis, that’s the average length of Jesus’ conversations as recorded in the gospels. Jesus deeply and eternally impacted people’s lives through brief, everyday connections—and you can too. Listen in on a story where a woman is greeted with healing grace. By hearing the good news of this story you will be ready to greet others with healing grace too.
A constituting idea of Blue Ocean Faith has been that everyone is us, that there is no ultimate us/them. But we developed that idea when the "them" for religious people were secular people, a group that Blue Ocean Faith flows easily with. Years later, the "us" is the other side of a sharply partisan, often vicious political divide. Christina Roberts, Ryan Bauers and Dave Schmelzer discuss whether "everyone is us" holds true in this new world. Sometimes Jesus’ teachings seem straightforward. Possibly difficult to execute, but straightforward. Love your enemies. Love God and love others. Ask in faith. Other times, Jesus creates a big “mud puddle”—a question or statement that causes people to wonder, speculate, or debate. Join Rick and special guest Carl Medearis (author of the new book 42 Seconds) as they jump into a “mud puddle” statement from John 10, a passage where Jesus discusses who he’ll bring into his flock. Wallowing in the puddle, Rick and Carl will discuss what it means to listen to the voice of Jesus and share their experiences interacting with “sheep from another sheepfold.” Have you joined the Pigs? Every interaction we have with others, no matter how small, is important. Jesus modeled this perspective during his time on Earth. Even in his briefest encounters, he was able to impact people in a meaningful way. What would it look like to follow Jesus' example in our own conversations? What if more meaningful interactions with others was a single 'yes' away? Join Alpine Chapel for Part One of our four-week series, "42 Seconds". Using the book 42 Seconds: The Jesus Model for Everyday Interactions by Carl Medearis as a guide, we'll explore what it means to interact with others like Jesus did. And it all starts with something that doesn't come naturally or randomly: kindness.

Plus… white Christians are now a minority in America, and Phil and Skye discuss “The Nashville Statement.” This week on the podcast!

With yet another terrorist atrocity in the news, this time leading to the deaths of at least 38 people in Tunisia, people are again asking, 'Is Islam inherently violent?' We ask Carl Medearis, an international expert in Muslim-Christian relations who has lived, worked and travelled in the Middle East for the last 30 years, to help us unpack this question. Carl Medearis worked as a missionary for many years in Beirut, Lebanon and as a result is recognised as an international expert in Muslim-Christian relations. Carl has some fascinating insights into cross-cultural mission from his years of working with Muslims, and he believes these principles are just as relevant in our Western context. I'll give you a hint, it's all about Jesus! Definitely an episode worth listening to (even if we do say so ourselves!).
