Tshaka Menelik Imhotep Campbell is a former Silicon Valley Poet Laureate and has authored four books of poetry: Tarman, Muted Whispers, STUFF | I will Write More, and Tunnel Vision. He is preparing to release a fifth book with El Martillo Press, Blood at the Root. Born in London, England, and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Tshaka was introduced to the words of Malcolm X and Winston Churchill at an early age by his father, an orator and advocate for the power of language. While the influence of those lessons lay dormant for much of his youth, Tshaka was concurrently exposed to the rhythm and rhyme of early rap music and life as a Black man in America. Today, much of Tshaka's poetry revolves around a need for identity, exploring themes such as fatherhood and the experiences of Black Americans. His soon-to-be-released book of poems, Blood At The Root, was written for his daughter and has taken over a decade to complete. In this book, he hopes to share experiences she can bring into her life. Blood at the Root aims to address topics related to love, loss, and the human condition. In this conversation, we discuss Tshaka's formative upbringing, his creation story as a poet, his purpose for writing, and the perspective behind his upcoming book. The movie is absolutely incredible! And so, talking with Allan and gaining his perspective about his role and the movie, I wholeheartedly admit that the movie is richly deserved for us older generation. Although there is nothing wrong with anyone from any generation being fan of the cult classic, the movie certainly broke the ground and paved the way for other zombie movies. In the interview, Allan tells how he heard of the role of Tarman and what he did to prepare for it… Which was absolutely nothing! He improvised and acquired the role. Natural talent at its finest! He walks jaggedly so well, I mean if I were to attempt that, I would most likely wind up in the hospital. He does give a tip for those who wish to mimic the walk, “It's all in the hips.” Except my hips are too worn out for that type of walking. Overall, great interview with such a talented and remarkable actor! Still idolized to this day, almost 40 years later, Tarman has been immortalized. I find it fascinating that the costume is still being sold at stores and bought online for Halloween parties, conventions, and haunts throughout the United States. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/southjerseyhorror/message

We know that humans can become addicted to drugs and alcohol, but can we actually become addicted to food? Today, we interview Dr. Vera Tarman, the author of "Food Junkies - A Recovery from Food Addiction" Dr. Tarman, is the medical director of Renascent, an addiction rehab centre in Toronto, and works with people struggling with a variety of substance addictions, including food. Evidence is mounting for the ways in which the brain responds to hyperpalatable food substances, such as food products that are high in sugar, fat and/or salt. Research is showing that these substances can trigger a brain response and cascade similar to drug addiction. The food industry however, often creates food with the intention of having it be addictive. We have always counselled people about learning to develop a positive relationship with food, but there may be a case of learning how to avoid certain food products that have these addictive food substances. Tune in to today's conversation with Dr. Vera Tarman to hear all about this controversial topic. On this episode, I'm giving a spoiler filled review/rundown of The Return of the Living Dead (1985). This is one of the funniest horror comedies and one that gave me such a fright when seeing brain eating zombies, especially the gooey Tarman. Trioxin toxin, a group of punk rock friends in a cemetery, a nude Linnea Quigley dance, lots of spicy brain action and a punk rock soundtrack. Do you wanna party, then come give a listen. For this episode, the song is Tonight (We'll Make Love Until We Die), the artist is SSQ. A little trivia for you, the lead singer in SSQ is Stacey Swain, also known as Stacey Q who had the 80's hit song "Two of Hearts."
My guest this week is Dr Vera Tarman who is a specialist in addiction behaviour and treatment. Dr. Vera is internationally recognized for her education in and publications on various areas of addiction and more specifically food addiction. She's had her own issues with alcohol but when she stopped drinking she started eating until her weight rose to 250lbs.. it was the eating addiction that “brought her down” as she puts it… In this episode:- Vera had a difficult childhood. Her mother was an alcoholic who died when Vera was just 15..and her relationship with her father was not good so she left home at 17 She was “floored” by the speed of her mother's decline and vowed that she would never drink However she did take drugs – she mentioned LSD and pot but also stresses that this was back in the 70's when drugs were not as toxic as they are today By the age of 19 she had switched from drugs to alcohol in spite of the vow she had made Within a couple of years the alcohol had taken hold and she would always drink to get solidly drunk She stopped drinking to get through college but when she stopped drinking..she started eating – and it was the food that “brought her down” as she puts it Her eating had nothing to do with enjoyment – she was making herself numb, eating and purging..- she described it as “frantic” and with hindsight can see that her addiction to alcohol had simply transferred to her eating habits… there is so much sugar in alcohol of course Dr Vera describes alcohol as sugar on steroids! In her 20's she was stuck in the dieting yo yo – losing the weight and then gaining it back - eventually gaining 100 pounds – she was bulimic She reintroduced alcohol to her diet and tried to control it – as she says back then she had no idea of the peace of mind she could gain by ditching it altogether. Steadily her weight increased to 240 lbs – she kept losing weight and regaining it and it wasn't until her late 40's that she had a breakthrough…. That was when she accepted that treat sugar was an addiction – she couldn't have a little now and again, she would have to quit completely.. Over the course of the next few years she went on to lose 60 or 70 lbs After the sugar she quit flour (bread muffins pizza etc) and lost another 80 lbs and finally she quit grains and lost the rest of her excess weight – never gaining it back She describes losing the weight as a great relief as it had been making her miserable in so many ways and she never felt healthy or well In fact these days she stresses that addicts mustn't fear living a life of deprivation … you are living a life of deprivation now …so reach out and get help and find freedom We talked about the fact that with alcoholism we can quit alcohol completely but obviously we have to eat some food – Vera made the very interesting point that she hasn't quit food but she does quit food products – processed food Vera's approach of gradually shutting out various food groups is an interesting one – when I asked her what she DID eat she listed some of them – yoghourt, cheese, salmon, meat, vegetables She spoke of her pleasure in eating these foods and doesn't feel at all deprived…as she put it she doesn't have to eat bread or sugar any more, she can enjoy real food instead – her palate has switched from craving sugar and carbs to appreciating healthy foods Vera is not a cook but stresses that its quite easy to eat well – as an example yoghourt is easy to make and so are roasted veg I explained that we give our community advice to eat fresh fruit rather than candy if they are craving sweet things in early sobriety If you'd like more info on the science behind this advice then listen to Tribe Sober podcast episode 31 from January 2021 to hear nutritionist Mary Ann Shearer Vera described addiction as “a craving which leads to an obsession that then becomes difficult or impossible to stop” We should ask ourselves “Am I obsessed with something that is affecting my life negatively?” She explained how we can go from enjoying a gentle buzz to wanting a drink to needing a drink – needing more and more to get the same result… Continual use of alcohol can “flatten” our dopamine receptors so we eventually need alcohol just to feel normal. Dr Vera explained that some people get a more intense buzz of pleasure when they begin to drink and that… If your dopamine receptors are naturally “flat” you may need something to feel ok I asked Dr Vera how we can boost our dopamine naturally – before addiction our dopamine is “built in” – it's about anticipation and looking forward to the next thing We all have a natural curiosity that makes us want to try new things – that's why we encourage Tribe members to get a project to keep the dopamine triggered We agreed that social support was essential in early sobriety– we can't just isolate and watch tv – we have to connect with others and keep that dopamine perking! That's why a project that connects you with other people works so well We talked about using sugar and alcohol to numb our feelings and the fact that.. Junk food and alcohol will release endorphins which block pain and that's why it can numb our feelings Sleep – Vera says alcohol destroys our sleep structure and it can take as long as a year for normal sleep patterns to resume We talked about menopause which Vera described as a storm of hormones (like being a teenager again) – She also said that it's a time when many women put on weight – they become very sensitive to carbohydrates and even if they were controlling their weight then they were younger it's like a switch has been flipped…. We are more prone to weight gain when we hit menopause – especially if we are drinking! We talked about bariatric surgery and the fact that many people do become addicted to alcohol when they have addressed their weight issue with this surgery Vera explained that one glass of wine will be equivalent to 3 after this surgery so it's not difficult to become dependent… There are a lot of negative side effects to this surgery so it should only be used if the weight has become life threatening – far better to tackle the eating We talked about the fact that alcohol is now linked to 7 different types of cancer and also Alzheimers – sugar and alcohol are are also linked to Alzheimers Vera's Advice is to accept that you have a condition, something has happened in your brain to cause this addiction – it's not your fault – educate yourself – books, podcast – accept you'll have to stop – whatever you've been trying hasn't worked so get some help – You heard her stressing the essential need to join a community so please check out Tribe Sober – we've got the tools and the group support to get you on track…. And more importantly to keep you on track – just go to tribesober.com and hit join our tribe Vera wanted to stress that whatever the addiction there is hope…and in fact we both know so many people who have succeeded in overcoming both alcohol and food addiction Learn more about Dr Vera via her:- Book Food Junkies Website addictionsunplugged.com Facebook Group "I am sweet enough, sugar free for life" Also Food Junkies podcast You Tube Channel is Vera Tarman Episode Sponsor This episode is sponsored by the Tribe Sober Membership Program. Dr. Vera Tarman is the Medical Director of Renascent, one of Canada's largest treatment centers for substance abuse where she works as an addiction specialist. Dr. Tarman cites the statistic in her book, Food Junkies: the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that by the year 2030, 84% of the U.S. population will be overweight and 42 % will be obese. After recovering from food addiction herself by maintaining a 100-lb weight loss for more than 12 years, Dr. Tarman is on the front lines in presenting the message about the problem of food addiction and recovery solutions through her work, her book, Food Junkies: Recovery From Food Addiction and her podcast Food Junkies. We discuss how sugar and processed foods can be addictive and contribute to the growing obesity crisis and are the “tobacco of the 70s”. Since the truth about food addiction has not been acknowledged and accepted, the food industry, insurance, and pharmaceutical industries continue to benefit financially without addressing in a meaningful way how addictive foods contribute to health issues today. The length of time it takes for people to withdraw from excess food, sugar, and trigger foods varies by individual but is typically three to four weeks. Dr. Vera Tarman is an instructor at the INFACT School https://infactschool.com/ and is an internationally renowned expert on sugar and food addiction and knows recovery is possible. This is a wonderful episode. Check out Dr. Tarman's Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SugarFreeForLife

What a privilege it was to speak to Dr. Tarman! She is the leading authority on food addiction. We cover a variety of topics in this podcast. Importantly, Dr. Tarman defines what food addiction is so that you can identify it within yourself, if you feel that this may be applicable to you. We also discuss how food addiction is treated. Spoiler alert... treatment for food addiction and reversing Type 2 diabetes through diet are accomplished in the much same way. Additionally, since this is a podcast about fasting, we discuss the role that fasting may have for someone that is also dealing with food addiction. You will definitely come away from this episode with a much better understanding of food addiction. However, since this podcast is only one hour and the field of food addiction is so broad, I highly recommend that you check out Dr. Tarman's book (Food Junkies), podcast (Food Junkies), Facebook page (Sugar-Free for Life: I'm Sweet Enough), and website (addictionsunplugged.com) for many more resources. Later that year, they began running clinical research groups with Dr. Jen Unwin, Heidi Giaever (UK), Charlotte Poulsen, and Frida Sandin (Sweden), which was the first of its kind audit on treatment interventions for ultra-processed food addiction. Their findings were published in Sept. 2022 in Frontiers in Psychiatry called "Low carbohydrate and psychoeducational programs show promise for the treatment of ultra-processed food addiction.” This paper is now in the top 2% of papers ever published in Frontiers and in the Top 100 papers published of all time in the online journal. In November 2022, Molly and Clarissa Kennedy, RSW launched their online Eating Disorders and Food Addiction Recovery Platform: Sweet Sobriety. Dr. Vera Tarman, M.D., author of the book Food Junkies and co-host of the podcast Food Junkies, is a medical doctor working in addiction treatment. In addition to her professional expertise, she has her own food addiction recovery story and it includes having lost and kept off 100 pounds over 13 years. In this interview, we explore the topic of how trauma intersects with food addiction. Some camps say trauma causes addiction which implies or suggests that if we heal the trauma, our addiction can heal too or at least fade into the background. It is or was caused by the trauma. It is a trauma response.Others say, trauma and addiction are separate and distinct and may or may not co-occur. There is a correlation, not a causation relationship.Others say the root cause of addiction is not a biochemical brain glitch, nor a misguided attempt at self-regulation, but a spiritual crisis.Listen in as Dr. Tarman weighs in on the topic of how these different threads, these different perspectives on the root cause of addiction, come together into a cohesive narrative. She does not present answers, she depolarizes the perspectives and explores their intersection and interdependence.Florence's courses & coaching programs can be found at:www.FlorenceChristophers.comConnect with Florence on:FACEBOOK | TWITTER | INSTAGRAM | YOUTUBE

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr. Vera Tarman. Dr. Vera Tarman started addictions Unplugged in 2008 because she found a need for information on addiction and, more specifically, food addiction. This is episode was previously aired on April 24th 2021. Today, the Addictions Unplugged website serves as a portal and discussion forum for medical professionals, front-line addiction workers, and those affected by addiction to reach out to Dr. Tarman and find out the latest information on treatment. Dr. Tarman has been reaching out to the medical and addiction communities through her workshops and speaking engagements. She speaks on the topics of the science behind food addiction and why we use food for comfort. She has educated thousands of people across the world and hopes to help all those struggling with food addiction. In this episode, Dr. Vera Tarman reveals how she found the connection between indulging cravings for "comfort food" and engaging in substance abuse. Yes, food can become addictive, and Dr. Vera explains how. Plus, we talk about how to know if you're addicted to food and what steps you can take to face that food addiction. Plus, we go deep into what's happening in our brains when we eat sugar and why scientists make food so addictive. [00:25] About Dr. Vera Tarman And The Inspiration Behind Food Junkies Vera is an addiction specialist. She sees people coming into a residential setting, they're putting down their alcohol, cocaine, cigarettes, and marijuana. However, they start picking up the sugar. Within two or three weeks, they started to gain a lot of weight. Eating was very much like their previous behavior of addiction. Now, Dr. Vera loves to talk about the addiction that people have with food. Plus, she even wrote a book on the subject – Food Junkies. It's a fact-filled guide to coping with compulsive overeating problems. Overeating, binge eating, obesity, anorexia, and bulimia – Dr. Vera tackles the poorly understood issue of food addiction in her book. Get Food Junkies: https://www.amazon.ca/Food-Junkies-Recovery-Addiction/dp/1459741978/benazadi-20 [06:05] How Can Food Become Addictive? The inspiration for Food Junkies came from another book, Hooked. Hooked is about the troubling story of how food companies have exploited our most fundamental evolutionary instincts to get us hooked on processed foods. Get Hooked: https://www.amazon.ca/Hooked-Food-Giants-Exploit-Addictions/dp/0771059590/benazadi-20 The food industry has made our food addictive by targeting the chemistry in our brains. Sadly, the food industry has figured out that the reward pathway will keep people coming back for their food. Brilliant scientists are paid good money to figure out how to activate those pathways. [08:50] The Negative Impacts On Your Brain When Consuming Sugars Sugars will light up part of the brain that's emotional and impulsive. It's the part of our brain that makes us do things without thought - this is all subconscious thinking. Plus, sugar will trigger dopamine primarily, which is our neurochemical of desire. There's also endorphins and serotonin. Endorphins trigger comfort while serotonin triggers connectedness. Addiction will make you want an entire bag of chips. You can't stop at one or two because your neural biology is so damaged. The physical manifestations of sugar and high-carb addiction are happening in the brain. [17:00] What You Need To Know About The Different Stages of Food Addiction When we talk about food addiction, it's essentially like diabetes. Food addiction is a chronic and progressive condition. You may have a food addiction if you would rather stay at home and eat instead of going out for a social occasion. If you consistently do not feel well because of the food you eat, you may be suffering from food addiction. Another sign of food addiction is eating foods that you know are not going to make you feel good. If your obsession with food is excessive, then you are a food addict. Lastly, if you are in trouble with your health, then you may be a food addict. “You have to be very careful if you're moving down this path of food addiction.” -Dr. Vera [25:25] Fasting For People With Addictions To Food Cutting out sugar will be the first step for people who have an addiction to food. Sugar is the trigger – so, ditch the trigger! If you have a food addiction, be aware of pitfalls. If you have a history of starving yourself, then fasting may not be the right path. Fasting can be healing; however, it's a tool that can hurt you if you do not know how to use it. If it's done carefully, fasting can be great for the body. [30:40] Why Dr. Vera Is A Massive Fan Of Eating More Protein Vera isn't necessary a fan of protein. Instead, Dr. Vera is a fan of low-carb. Protein and fat will give the body satiety. Most likely, if you are low-carb, then you are eating higher protein. Vera says she doesn't have a problem with carbs as long as they are not processed. [32:15] It Takes Three To Four Weeks To Kick Your Sugar Addiction It takes about three of four weeks to quit an addiction fully. A connection with a daily coach or sponsor will be critical on your journey. So, find support from someone while kicking your addiction. There's something we need to start talking about. It's addiction. Sugar and food addiction.A lot of people get Dr. Westman's keto food list, stick to it easily, and start getting great results pretty quickly. But the other half really struggle. Even if they're dealing with obesity, type 2 diabetes, or another serious health issue, they have a really hard time staying away from the carbs. They're stuck in self-destructive patterns around food -- patterns they've been in for years or decades. They find themselves reaching for those old, familiar boxes, bags, and packages again and again, even though they're desperate to change. If this resonates with you -- if you feel like your behavior around certain foods is out of control, you're not alone. Sugar and food addiction thrive in secrecy and silence. Well, no more. It's time for us to start having these critical conversations and bringing this to light, because you're not the only one having a hard time.Watch our latest video for an introduction to this essential topic. Dr. Westman is joined by his colleague, Dr. Vera Tarman, for a frank conversation about food addiction. Dr. Tarman is a rock star in the food addiction world. She's the Medical Director of one of Canada's largest treatment centers for substance abuse and is an internationally renowned expert on sugar and food addiction. Most importantly, Dr. Tarman has lived the food addiction experience, herself: she's a recovering food addict who has maintained a 100-pound weight loss for more than 12 years. She's the real deal!If this topic resonates with you, Dr. Tarman is doing a FREE 2-part workshop starting tomorrow, Wednesday (April 20th, part 1) and Sunday 24, part 2). It's going to be epic, you don't want to miss it! Want the REPLAY via email? Sign up here: https://adaptyourlifeacademy.com/suga...
Food addiction is controversial in medicine. But Dr. Vera Tarman explains how food addiction is just like any other harmful addiction and provides advice about how to overcome it.
Coach Tarman is a former Division I volleyball player at Kansas State who has been a head coach for Papillion La-Vista South high school for the past three seasons. The title of one of Meatloaf's songs fits her head coaching journey fairly well-Two Out of Three Ain't Bad! We discuss her journey as a former player, including one of her regrets. We discuss the last three seasons that have included two State Championships and how she trains them to max out when it matters the most. Her 2021 team went undefeated, and the success of that team will certainly stand the test of time and go down as one of the best in Nebraska's high school history. You will love her insights and the wonderful nuggets she shares to help high performers max out in life and sport.
Food addiction is a real thing, but it's not recognized in many healthcare, workplace, and school settings. It could be the number one reason why most people struggle to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. In my conversation with Dr. Vera Tarman, food addiction expert and author of Food Junkies, we discuss the difference between food addiction and eating disorders, what happens neurochemically in the brain and why some people are more prone to addiction, and ways to recover to find food serenity. About Dr. Vera Tarman: Dr Vera Tarman has been working in the field of addiction medicine since 1994. She became accredited with the Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) in 2004. She has been the medical director of Renascent since 2006. She is a regular contributor to the call-in TV show Living Clean, Living Well and was cohost on Addictions Unplugged, a community call-in show about addictions. Although she has spoken on various issues in addiction, her special interest is in the area of food addiction. She is the author of Food Junkies: The Truth about Food Addiction. Dr Tarman has found working at Renascent extremely rewarding, mainly because of its support of an abstinence model of care and its acceptance that the spiritual, as well as medical and psychological dimensions are important for recovery. Dr Tarman and Renascent believe that good care involves treating addiction and fostering a lifelong recovery life plan based on community and peer support. The power is ours! Episode SummaryIn this episode, Dr. Tarman discusses the treacherous nature of sugar addiction. She talks about her struggle with a sugar addiction and how working with addicts in her professional life helped her recognize that she had an addiction. "What got you here won't get you there" - Marshall GoldsmithHighlightsSince tackling her food addiction, Vera has lost and maintained a 100-pound weight loss.In her college years, Vera started restricting her intake of calories and all she could think about was food. She eventually stressed so much about the restriction that she stopped and began to eat too much. She then went through a series of binging and purging and ended up driving herself to an emergency room to seek help.It wasn't until much later while working with drug addiction that she recognized that she had an addiction. She decided to treat herself in the same way that she treated addicts. She started by eliminating all junk food from her home and avoiding it at all costs.Within weeks she felt much better. You have to stop using whatever the addiction is before you can see the underlying reasons for the addiction.Sugar is an unnatural food product when removed from the food. It's a drug just like any other drug.Parents should limit sugar to children.Change the mindset to sugar being a toxin just like tobacco or other drugs. Would you give those to your child?Relevant LinksBooks and other resources can be found here: https://www.addictionsunplugged.com/https://www.foodjunkiespodcast.com/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/VeraTarmanMDFood Junkie Book http://bit.ly/FoodJunkiesRecoveryfromFAFacebook Group: www.fb.com/groups/SugarFreeForLifeAll past episodes of the podcast: https://www.feelingfull.com/
