These writers each sold millions of copies of their respective books throughout the 2000s, identifying and filling a niche for Christian supernatural thriller literature with exciting stories that still promoted a wholesome message. HOUSE is a collaboration between Peretti and Dekker, adapted into a feature film by director Robby Henson (THR3E) in a very lurid, saturated way that nowadays feels dated to the late 2000s, and could have been influenced by the burgeoning video game adaptation genre of cinema at the time. HOUSE as a film has interesting ideas but is barely held together with no narrative follow through. A couple experiencing domestic issues gets into literally three or four car crashes within the first ten minutes of the film, then stumble upon a remote cabin hotel with eccentric hosts who try to kill the couple before telling them the legend of the Tin Man, a psycho wearing a wooden mask who claims to have killed God. Weird southern gothic set dressing and video game-style quests hurtle the plot toward a disappointing climax where (spoiler alert) the Tin Man is defeated by light. It's barely coherent and barely Christian, and doesn't compare to other Peretti film adaptations we enjoyed such as HANGMAN'S CURSE (2003), but at least it's weird and funny with bold, bright colors that remind us how Christian cinema tried to merge with the secular in the chaotic and very silly decade of the 2000s. Series: All! Jesus has all authority, So that all nationsMight pledge all allegiance to him.Title: “What's the Last Supper About?”Scripture: Matthew 26:17-30Bottom line: The Last Supper birthed the Lord's Supper reminding us of God's amazing love for us. (Romans 5:8 articulates this well)DISCUSSION QUESTIONSSERMON OUTLINE & NOTESMAIN REFERENCES USEDDISCUSSION QUESTIONSDiscussion questions for group and personal study. Reflect and Discuss:1. Explain why Matthew 26-27 is so crucial to our understanding of God, the world, sin, salvation, etc.2. What impact should the cross have on our reading of the previous chapters in Matthew's Gospel?3. Discuss how the following attributes of God are displayed in the cross: sovereignty, righteousness, wrath, and love.4. Explain what is meant by the idea that the cross is fundamentally for God's sake.5. How does the cross expose our sin? What does it say about the seriousness of our sin?6. How would you explain the terms substitution and propitiation to an unbeliever with little or no theological knowledge or vocabulary?7. Why is it important to see Jesus as our substitute, propitiation, and reconciliation, and not just a loving example?8. How does the truth of Christ's substitutionary death impact our daily pursuit of holiness?9. Discuss several ways in which the cross fulfills Old Testament prophecies and expectations.10. How does the cross rule out the possibility of a works-based righteousness?Final Questions (optional or in place of above)What is God saying to you right now? What are you going to do about it?Find our sermons, podcasts, discussion questions and notes at https://www.gracetoday.net/podcastQ. What do I want them to know?A. What the Last Supper is about. (The death of Christ that brings forgiveness for those who believe)Q. Why do I want them to know it?A. Because this is where Jesus transforms the Passover meal to the Lord's supper to connect the Passover to the cross which brings us 1) Forgiveness from God, and 2) Fellowship with God forever.Q. What do I want them to do about it?A. Confess/Repent and believe, and then (re)enter into fellowship with God forever.Q. Why do I want them to do it?A. This glorifies God for his mercy poured out on those who've trusted and obeyed Jesus Christ.Q. How can they begin to do this?A. Begin to really believe what you say you believe. This will look like someone sharing good news like they believe it's too good to keep to themselves. Repent/believe and receive forgiveness as you step into fellowship with God and his people forever.SERMON OUTLINE & NOTESIntroductionThe Story“This is my story, this is my song. Praising my savior all the day long…”In 2010, I took our oldest daughter Kelsi to the great city of Franklin, TN (just outside of Nashville) to spend a day with our favorite author at the time, Ted Dekker and 200 of his best fans. In the course of that amazing day, we heard Ted talk to us about why he writes the stories he wrote. He said, in essence, that he writes the stories that he writes as a way to tell The Story from another angle. In other words, he wants to retell The Story in different ways to both engage it personally in a fresh way while taking others there. It has been said that Matthew's gospel is the Passion narrative with a very long introduction. Well, I can see that. Starting in chapter 26, THIS IS THE STORY OF STORIES. THIS IS THE STORY THAT MATTERS. We must not miss this story. So we find ourselves looking over the disciples shoulders as Jesus begins to assert himself, dare I say, in a more kingly manner. After tall, he does have ALL kingly authority. So it's the festival of unleavened bread, one of 3 annual feasts. It's the Passover so I need to explain what that is and why it matters.SERMON OUTLINEThe Last Supper in the Upper Room (26:17-30)I. The instructions (26:17-19): Jesus directs two of his disciples to prepare a room in Jerusalem for the Passover.A. What's the Passover? The Passover refers to the time when God passed-over any Hebrew who followed Moses' instructions just before the 10th plague in Egypt. They sacrificed an unblemished lamb and painted the door frame of their home with it's blood. This caused the angel of the Lord to Passover that house and not take the life of the firstborn male. The Hebrews were instructed in the law (Leviticus) to celebrate this festival very year in remembrance of that event so that they could connect it to Jesus' death, burial and resurrection. B. Why does it matter? This foreshadowed Jesus coming as the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (J the B) by shedding his blood. All who believe his blood covers us are passed over by God as well and receive abundant, eternal life. It's the blood of Christ that covers us with mercy when we stand underneath it by grace through faith. Ask God now to pour out his mercy on you as you trust him.II. The indictment (26:20-25)A. Jesus' betrayal (26:20-24): The Savior announces that one of the Twelve will betray him.B. Jesus betrayer (26:25): He then identifies Judas as the one. (It appears; confirmed in John 13:26)III. The institution (26:26-30)A. The supper (26:26-29): The Lord's Supper is now instituted as the last supper (the last Passover meal) is celebrated and transformed all at the same time.He speaks concerning the bread 26:26): It is his body. He made it about himself instead of about the lamb and it's blood. He speaks concerning the cup (26:27-29) Itis his blood, poured out to forgive sins. Again, Jesus makes it about himself. This is when the Passover meal becomes the Lord's supper. B. The song (26:30): They sing a hymn, then go out to the Mount of Olives.ConclusionBottom line: The Last Supper birthed the Lord's Supper reminding us of God's amazing love for us. This week I was having lunch with three guys, two of which I had just met that morning. All three are in gospel ministry in some capacity in the area. We'll call the guy next to me Alan. In the course of our meal, Alan engaged our server and asked if she knew Jesus. It was a little abrupt and I could tell she wasn't wanting to have that conversation right then and there. Nevertheless, he moved through a short gospel presentation. You could tell from how she answered the questions that she didn't know the Lord nor was she interested in the implications of her answers to her questions. At least not at that time. Her responses were sad but in my mind I kind of moved on as well that didn't go well. Our table was very quiet. No one spoke. I turned and looked at Alan next to me and noticed his head in his hands. Then I saw the tears. He was crying. He was crying because she was lost and seemed unconcerned about the path leading to destruction she was on. What Jesus calls “The broad road that leads to destruction.” I was immediately ashamed at my lack of compassion for that young lady. I was convicted over my lack of belief that the gospel is called good news for a reason—it's great news! And that when someone rejects it they miss out (at least for the moment) in the grace and mercy of God. It's this lack of feeling that infects our churches today. This lack of believing in the sacrifice of Jesus made on the cross on our behalf. We celebrate the Lord's supper nearly every Sunday so that this doesn't happen. As you can see, it's no guarantee. The spiritual gravity of this world pulls us away from believing that the good news of Jesus is really good news—for us and others. I still have a long way to go.My prayer today is that God will rekindle our love for him so much that we'll actually believe this news is good enough to share it (even awkwardly) because it's such good news.“Jesus Loves Me” songYes, Jesus loves me. Hear it again for the first time. Embrace the reality that Jesus took your place. Death passes over us because we're under his blood of mercy. How much do you love me? THIS MUCH! (Arms spread out wide)QuestionsDo you have trouble remembering why the good news is good news?Do you believe that the good news is really good news for you?Do you share the good news with others like you share other good news?“Every time you receive communion, you are reminded both of the hostility of the world towards Jesus and of his love for that same world.” -Nicky GumbelLet's prayNotesUnderstand God's solutionHave you ever been falsely accused or betrayed by a friend? Have you had people plotting against you? Or have you ever experienced some other form of personal hostility? Jesus experienced all these things.God has revealed himself in creation. However, his supreme revelation is in the person of his Son, Jesus Christ.God himself has come to be part of this hostile world to do something about it. In this passage we see a glimpse of God's solution, which he achieved through coming in the person of his Son Jesus. Yet the world was hostile even to Jesus.PlottingWe should not be surprised by the world's hostility to Jesus and to Christians today. Jesus knew he would be ‘handed over to be crucified' (v.2). The chief priests and elders ‘plotted to arrest Jesus in some sly way and kill him' (v.4).Jesus says to the Twelve, ‘One of you is going to hand me over to the conspirators' (v.21, MSG).AccusationsWhen a woman came to Jesus ‘with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head' (v.7), even the disciples regarded what was done for Jesus as a ‘waste' (v.8).There is something deeply moving about this incident. Jesus is given for us. The cost is beyond anything we can ever imagine, and his death is imminent. A jar of expensive perfume is only fitting, and yet the disciples are fussing about waste. Most people understand your works of social action (for example, in response to poverty) but they find it harder to understand your worship of Jesus and all the things associated with it. They regard these things as a ‘waste' and think that surely there is a better use of your time and money (v.9), but Jesus sees things differently: ‘She has done a beautiful thing to me' (v.10). She showed her extravagant love for Jesus.BetrayalWhat people will do for money! Judas waited for an opportunity to hand Jesus over for ‘thirty silver coins' (v.15). How painful this must have been for Jesus! Judas was one of his closest ‘friends'; one of the inner circle of twelve he had chosen. He knew – ‘one of you will betray me' (v.21).Yet Jesus in his extraordinary love, dies for them all. During a meal together, he begins to explain the meaning of his death. He explains through the breaking of the bread and drinking of wine that his blood is to be ‘poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins' (v.28). Jesus' answer to a hostile world was to be crucified in order to make forgiveness and redemption possible.Every time you receive communion, you are reminded both of the hostility of the world towards Jesus and of his love for that same world.''Lord Jesus, thank you that you died for me and demonstrated how to love a hostile world.''Outline Bible OUTLINE MATTHEW 26Jesus and disciples celebrate Passover in the upper room. Jesus predicts Judas's betrayal and Peter's denial, both of which come to pass. After supper Jesus prays in Gethsemane, then is arrested and taken before the high priest.I. THE ACTION PRECEDING THE UPPER ROOM (26:1-16)A. The prediction (26:1-2): Once again Jesus predicts his betrayal and crucifixion.B. The plots (26:3-5, 14-16): On two occasions wicked plans are made to kill Jesus.1. The plot by Caiaphas (26:3-5): Jewish leaders meet at the palace of this high priest to discuss ways to murder the Savior!2. The plot by Judas (26:14-16): He agrees with Jesus' enemies to betray the Messiah for thirty pieces of silver.C. The preparation (26:6-13): Jesus is anointed by a woman at Bethany.1. The dedication (26:6-7): A woman pours a very expensive alabaster jar of perfume over his head.2. The denunciation (26:8-9): The disciples criticize her for not selling the perfume and giving the proceeds to the poor.3. The defense (26:10-13): Jesus defends the woman, referring to two aspects:a. The preparation aspect (26:10-12): She did this to prepare his body for burial.b. The prophetic aspect (26:13): Her act will be remembered wherever the gospel is preached!II. THE ACTION IN THE UPPER ROOM (26:17-30)A. The instructions (26:17-19): Jesus directs two of his disciples to prepare a room in Jerusalem for the Passover.B. The indictment (26:20-25)1. Jesus' betrayal (26:20-24): The Savior announces that one of the Twelve will betray him.2. Jesus betrayer (26:25): He then identifies ludas as the one.C. The institution (26:26-30)1. The supper (26:26-29): The Lord's Supper is now instituted.a. He speaks concerning the bread 26:26): It is his body.b. He speaks concerning the cup (26:27-29) Itis his blood, poured out to forgive sins.2. When I saw that Bryan Timothy Mitchell had written a book that took inspiration from Dante's Inferno, I knew I'd want to check out Infernal Fall right away. Listen in to see why Bryan decided to write this book! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. What Made This Author Use Hell as Inspiration for His Novel? Bryan Timothy Mitchell is probably the kind of student every teacher both dreads and delights in. Because at the core of it all, a guy like Bryan who really does grasp the idea and hold onto it for years, despite a lack of interest in much of the information being taught, is what it's about. Well, he didn't disappoint, did he? Using Dante's Divine Comedy as inspiration, he sends his character in Infernal Fall through the circles of hell to discover Who he really needs to turn to for escape and purpose. And to top it all off, not only do we have this exciting new book, but James L. Rubart narrated it for audio! Audio listeners, you're in for a treat! Infernal Fall by Bryan Timothy Mitchell There is only one way out of Hell. Daniel Strong is a troubled young man with only one bright spot in his life—his girlfriend, Kristine. He hopes to propose to her on a hike in the mountains, but a mysterious artifact in a dark cavern ruins his plan. Things quickly go downhill—literally—as handling the ‘keystone' causes Daniel to fall straight into Hell, leaving Kristine behind. A soul-harvesting demon tells him the only way out is through, that he must go to Satan and bargain for his freedom. But the shadow man responsible for leaving the keystone behind tries to show him there's another way out. Against his better judgment, Daniel finds himself listening to the demon's claims that appealing to the Master of the Underworld himself is his only choice. As the unlikely group traverses the many levels of Hell, hurt, anger, and fear hound Daniel, reminding him how hopeless his efforts truly are. All Daniel can do is push forward in hopes of making it back to Kristine. Will Daniel heed Kristine's words to choose life? Or will he succumb to the lies pulling him down with every step? Infernal Fall is a modern twist on the classic tale: Dante's Inferno. If you're a fan of Ted Dekker and Frank Peretti, you will love Infernal Fall. Grab your copy today and embark on a harrowing tale of light vs darkness and discover if there truly is only one way out of Hell. You can learn more about Bryan Timothy Mitchell on his website. Today I get to share with you my conversation with the absolutely lovely Betsy St. Amant. Betsy is a Christian fiction author who shares her story of growing up into the storyteller she loved being as a child, and the Lord meeting her in her heartbreak over her divorce, becoming a very young single Mom, the challenge and the redemption of writing novels saturated with romance while going through a divorce. She shares about dying to one dream while birthing another and the beauty of God meeting us in our grief as we feel layered emotions as seasons change. In our conversation today, she also offers a word to women walking out divorce, the loss of a relationship, and hope for their future, and to the re-married woman, step-mothers, and other beautiful but often confusing seasons as she now is navigating that season herself. The Lord has the grace for us to feel many things at the same time, and that is good news for us! Her latest novel Tacos for Two is a fun little twist on “You've Got Mail” meets food trucks, identity, culture, generational familial expectations, and characters that you want to cheer for, shake, and absolutely love. I especially love that there is a beautifully written character with Down Syndrome that just filled my heart with warmth and appreciation for my friends and family living the Lucky Few life. Like her real life story, these characters are processing their life experiences in layers of joy, grief, loneliness, confusion, new community, change, and more. It is such a fantastic read, and so is this conversation. Friend, I hope no matter where you are, you know that the God who made you is a God who sees you and cares about you where you are in your story. Whether you are walking through a divorce, navigating a new season you longed for but isn't what you expected, or any other season of uncertainty, I want you to remember that you matter, and your story matters. In previous podcast episodes, I've mentioned that I want this podcast to be free of interviews unless they are about how an author writes, outlines or writers without an outline. Today, I'm making an exception with this bonus interview because I believe the discussion will benefit you even if you're in the planning stages of writing your first novel. As you can guess from the title of this show, I chat with Dave Chesson from Kindlepreneur on writing, editing, formatting, and collaborating with Atticus. For those who don't know, Atticus is a brand new all-in-one writing software for writers launched at the end of 2021. That's when the reviews of the software first launched. One of the many things I like about Atticus is that the developers are making updates all the time, and these updates are free after the initial purchase of the programme. And they have a calendar available where you can see when certain features are due to be rolled out. Before we get into the interview, here's a bit about Dave Chesson.About Dave ChessonDave Chesson is a military veteran, husband, and father of three. But, when he's not doing Dad things, he's an avid book marketer. Dave works in publishing and book marketing and has been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur, ALLi, Huffington Post, and Market Watch. And he's been blessed to have worked with many New York Times bestselling authors in multiple genres and topics like Ted Dekker, Orson Scott Card, Kevin J. Anderson and more. He has also been a paid consultant to major publishing companies helping with digital sales, advertisement methods and sales page optimisations. On his website, kindlepreneur.com, you can find some fantastic apps, including the Amazon Book Sales Calculator, Book Description Generator, and QR Code Generator. But he's best known as the creator of Publisher Rocket and, now, Atticus. So stay tuned for all of this and much more.Podcasts, Books, and Tools MentionedCheck Out the Show NotesAtticusAtticus Road MapKindlepreneurMacInCloudProWriting Aid *4 The WordsBook BrushPlottrWorld AnvilInterested in the mini-course on how to outline a novel?Am Writing Fiction Community by The Authorpreneur Podcast (Facebook Group)Support the show by buying me a coffeeWant the podcast straight to your inbox? My ServicesTry The Formatting Wizard Book Formatting Services for FREE **The Formatting Templates offered by my services.Le Villain Book Covers (Affordable Premade Book Covers) **My BooksMy Short Story, the LawnThe CandidateBecome a Beta Reader and Start Reading DuplicityEntitled to Murder on my blogEntitled to Murder on WattpadConnect with Me on Social MediaTwitter: @WriterADHayFacebook: www.facebook.com/authorpreneurpodcastFB group: Am Writing Fiction Community by The Authorpreneur Podcast Instagram: @authorpreneurpodcastYouTube: www.youtube.com/c/authorpreneurpodcast/videosGoodreads: www.goodreads.com/authoradhay* This is an affiliate link where I receive a very small commission if you purchase this product.** This is a service offered by me
Here we go... diving into the scariest relationship (if you're us!).... dating!! We both have a more outside-looking-in perspective, simply because we spent more of our twenties single than dating, but we've both learned different things from watching our friends get married young, dating the wrong guys and currently dating some great, godly men! No matter where you are, single, dating, married or engaged, we pray this episode will shed some new light on how you see relationships, the responsibility placed on Christians to build each other up and the confidence to be found in loving our heavenly Father! We pray this encourages you, makes you laugh and draws you closer to your people! The final frontier of Christian filmmaking is -- horror. It's a genre that captivates even the most insular Christian artists, so it's natural that attempts have been made to create heart-pounding films that still manage to carry a biblical message. THR3E, based on the novel by prolific Christian thriller/fantasy author Ted Dekker, is a deeply confusing endeavor in this category that gets so hung up on trying to do everything that it does nothing. A terrorist called the Riddle Killer targets Kevin Parson, a handsome seminary student, by planting bombs that Kevin must diffuse by calling upon his knowledge of Bible verses. Meanwhile, Kevin is haunted by the sins of his past and the trauma of abuse he suffered at the hands of his bizarre family. As Kevin's sanity unravels, so does the plot, launching into a series of elaborate twists that test the patience of even the most devout cinema-goer. Joining us in the Sunday School classroom this week is author Maggie Siebert, whose debut book BONDING is a collection of terrifying and deeply compelling short stories that inspire waves of dread. Everything that I have read about Tosca is true. She is a talented writer and an absolute delight to speak with. Her intriguing tag line for her book The Line Between, Save the Bacon, Save the World. Want to know what that means? Listen to the podcast OR better yet, read the book. She was kind enough to send me a SIGNED copy of her book and a little swag. That put her book on the top of my “To Be Read” pile, which it took me about six hours to consume this brilliant work. DIY Writer gives her a two thumbs up, 5 stars, and a heartfelt thank you for sharing that with me. Tosca Lee is the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of eleven novels including A SINGLE LIGHT, THE LINE BETWEEN, THE PROGENY, THE LEGEND OF SHEBA, ISCARIOT, and the Books of Mortals series with New York Times bestseller Ted Dekker. The incredible story of Sixto Rodriquez, a dejected musician who people thought was dead for over 25 years, until he was found very much alive (the events that transpired during those missing 25 years are simply remarkable); plus, Ted Dekker on reaching your dream no matter the detractors; Anthony Hopkins on the power of faith; Dr. Paul Brand on love overcoming evil; an angel saves a girl and her friends; the song of Mary; and the Apostle Paul on open doors and victory over untold adversaries.
We are very excited to bring you author Rachelle Dekker. If that last name is familiar, it should be she is the daughter of Bestselling author Ted Dekker. But Rachelle is forging her own path in the world of books. She is here to talk about her latest book "NINE." "NINE": Zoe Johnson spent most of her life living in the shadows, never drawing attention to herself, never investing in people or places. But when a wide-eyed, bedraggled teenager with no memory walks into the diner where Zoe works, everything changes. Now, against her better judgment, Zoe, who has been trying to outrun her own painful memories of the past, finds herself attempting to help a girl who doesn't seem to have any past at all. The girl knows only one thing: she must reach a woman in Corpus Christi, Texas, hundreds of miles away, before the government agents who are searching for her catch up to them. Award-winning author Rachelle Dekker throws you into the middle of the action and keeps the pressure on in this page-turning story that, asks Are we who the world says we are–or can we change our story and be something more?

Happy Halloween, All Hallow's Eve and (almost) All Saint's Day! This week, you--our listeners--get a double length episode! The gals are joined by their first guest contributor and close friend Alli (she/her and they/them--follow on TikTok!). The topics of discussion stay in the lanes of all things spooky, scary, paranormal, witchy and gory. Everyone, once again, talks about how they weren't allowed to read Harry Potter as children, as well as what other forms of media they were and were not allowed to consume (lest they become consumed by demons and whatnot). At the end of the day, all three hosts agree ghosts and spirits have GOT to be real and end the episode with both a scary and a heartwarming ghost story. As always, thank you for listening, rating and subscribing especially on Apple Podcasts! That will help others find us. You can also follow and interact with us on Twitter or Instagram, at @deargodwth! Alli recommends researching Samhain (which we all learned was pronounced saa-wn AFTER recording), All Saint's Day/All Hallow's Day, the solemnity of all saints and tells everyone to “Go souling.” Also on the recommendation block, 2 episodes of a horror podcast called The Wrong Station (episodes 449 and 424), along with The Scaredy Cat's Horror Show. As for books, Alli recommends Ted Dekker, who writes Christian horror. “Skin” is supposedly horrific and “The Bone Collector's Daughter” is less horrific. Amanda recommends And That's Why We Drink for paranormal and true crime junkies (and for anyone who needs new friends--listening to Em and Christine chat feels like being their best friend), Spooked from the makers of Snap Judgement, and the Welcome to Nightvale books. Christina recommends Salem's Lot, Misery, and Carrie by Stephen King as well as Last Podcast on the Left (with the disclaimer/warning that early episodes of LPOTL lean toward the problematic end of the racist ← → antiracist spectrum). --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/deargodwth/message

EPISODE 217I This week's guest is https://www.rachelledekker.com/ (Rachelle Dekker), author of the new suspense book, https://amzn.to/37fUkft (Nine). In addition to talking about writing and the writing life, you can hear me rave about how much I loved this book! We had such a great time talking about writing, what we learn through the process, and what themes you find yourself writing again and again. For Rachelle, it's all about identity. We talk about the different genres Rachelle has written, growing up as the daughter of a bestselling author (Ted Dekker) and then cowriting together, how she does a lot of her research, and some of her best writing tips. You can learn more about Rachelle and her books at her website, https://www.rachelledekker.com/ (https://www.rachelledekker.com/) as well as at Baker Publishing, http://bakerpublishinggroup.com/ (http://bakerpublishinggroup.com/). Find her on Facebook as Rachelle Dekker Author.
Today on the podcast we have the incredible Rachelle Dekker. Rachelle is an award winning author of suspense and science fiction novels, and also is the daughter of author Ted Dekker. Her most recent novel Nine is a heart pounding journey of exploring identity, grappling with hope, and longing for redemption even if you’re not sure it's possible. We talk about how the themes from this book echo loud and clear across hearts beating around the world, because in order to see light clearly, the dark has to be pretty dark. And yet, Christ is the Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. Rachelle is a woman who LOVES the Lord and I loved getting to talk with her about who He is, the Light of the Gospel, and the power that holds no matter what. Rachelle and I also talk a lot about what it was like to grow up as a child in love with stories, and the tension of living with, and loving, a parent who longed to protect his child from his calling, because he was, and still is, a pioneer of a genre. In that, he has faced much adversity, and parents like to protect their children from pain. And yet, Rachelle shares his calling. Listening to the beauty of the Lord’s work in Rachelle and Ted’s life through her journey of carving her own path, discovering her voice, and proving it was where God was leading her too, even to the point where they could co-author books together, was a truly beautiful story to unpack with her. Additionally, Rachelle and I are kindred spirits who truly believe music helps inform life (aka there’s a playlist for this episode). Also, if you grew up with some early 90’s Christian music you’re gonna love this. (I made some playlists for y’all!) Oh man, y’all, this is SUCH a good episode. Whether that’s processing where we find our identity, being attentive to what battles we are fighting and who exactly we are fighting with, to processing what we hear God calling us to no matter what anyone else says, I hope this ministers to you wherever you are today, and I hope that you remember that no matter how dark it is, we can ALWAYS look for the Light. *Playlist for this Episode annnnnd an homage to 90’s Christian music! -- This episode is sponsored by: Hopefuel Connect with them on Instagram, find their products here, and you can get 15% off your purchase by using the code SIMPLY15 -- References: Trevecca University The Hardy Boys Nancy Drew The Chronicles of Narnia The Boxcar Children The Magician’s Nephew Ted Dekker Avalon Crystal Lewis Jackie Velasquez Stacie Orrico Natalie Grant Point of Grace Twila Paris Cademon’s Call “Adonai” by Avalon Selah “The Blessing”- Symphonic version Rebecca St James “Iris” and “Baby’s Black Balloon” - Goo Goo Dolls “City of Angels” soundtrack “Uninvited” by Alanis Morissette My Spotify playlists Hans Zimmer Nickel Creek Goat Rodeo Sessions John Williams Puccini Girl Behind the Red Rope “The Hunger Games” soundtrack “The Chronicles of Narnia” soundtrack “The Prince of Egypt” soundtrack “When You Believe”- Whitney and Maria Whitney Houston “The Bodyguard” soundtrack “The Preacher’s Wife” soundtrack “Vision Of Love” - Mariah Carey C.S. Aubrey is the man men want to be and the man women want to be with. Living on a compound with Aubrey would mean he would get all the women and own all the resources. Today, Ryan and Aubrey talks about balance as a way to having it all — ever get tired of your ham sandwich? There isn't only one menu... Key Takeaways Habits or ideas? [1:53] what creates success? Aubrey explains that most of his success came from moments of furiously brilliant inspiration followed by long and often aimless recoveries. Structuring his habits was a way for him to achieve a more even keel. Having it all [3:47] there is no need to choose, but you do have to dedicate yourself to being fully present: 30 minutes of fully invested time is worth more than 3 days of half interested presence. Time and energy are the limiting factors — to be present and invested, you need the energy to spend the time. [5:34] Balance (or counterbalance) is the key to a well rounded life, Aubrey details what that means for him. The grind [9:43] Entrepreneurs often need to validate themselves externally, which leads to an inability to let go once you've reached a goal. You need to get comfortable with yourself, become aware of the psychological traps that keep you grinding and finally: identify what you are essential for within your company, and build a team that lets you leave to better come back. Sex and relationships [16:43] society has a lot of rigid ideas about what relationships are but Aubrey's sample group (athletes, CEO's, entrepreneurs, etc.) are all in monogamous relationships, cheating or wanting to cheat, becoming more and more resentful. He shares a bit about his journey towards an open relationship and how it's helped his couple(s) see their true selves unencumbered by resentment. Crumbling systems [23:03] governments, religions, society… Aubrey thinks humankind is going through a series of radical metaphysical shifts, beginning with the realisation of self which includes divinity, love and sovereignty over our own bodies and minds. The crumbling of “parental” structures requires an increase in personal responsibility and structure. Bad habits [26:37] are lost through knowledge, Aubrey moved towards a lot of good practices through gaining empirical knowledge and removing the intellectual wiggle room not to do them — cold showers are good, but you need every reason you can get to turn the hot water off! Pain and discomfort [28:49] the ability to push through beneficial discomfort and to collapse your fear surrounding something may be the defining characteristic of really successful people. Aubrey on wrestling tree cockroaches to collapse your fear into courage. In a society of abundance, (beneficial) discomfort is a healthy way of getting the yin to your yang and creating growth. Eat a weird lunch [36:45] Chapter 8 of Aubrey's book was the most difficult to write — being academic is a tough grind! Who does Aubrey want to be when he grows up? [38:55] Don Miguel Ruiz, Ted Dekker, Don Howard Lawler. Delayed braingasm [41:32] the layers of the onion of existence! One layer is universal love (god) One layer is consciousness (soul) One layer is the physical body The toothpick is the self, it always touches love, consciousness and the physical body. You can choose to identify with any of those layers, or recognise that you are always in contact with all of those dimensions — and that the onion is entirely made of toothpicks!! Thanks for listening! Mentioned in this episode Capitalism.com
