In late 2018 Utah's governor signed a medical marijuana compromise into law, legalizing medical cannabis in some instances in the state. But for years before the legalization, patients and caregivers lobbied for medical cannabis acceptance, often taking risks into their own hands by illegally obtaining the drug for relief. One such advocate and lobbyist is Christine Stenquist, a brain cancer survivor who lived 16 years post-surgery basically bedridden due to pain and nausea. When she discovered how much responsible marijuana use added to the quality of her life, she went to the state capital to advocate for legalization and founded Together for Responsible Use and Cannabis Education (TRUCE). Through her and many others' efforts, the 26-61a. Utah Medical Cannabis Act eventually gets passed. Christine joins this episode of Relentlessly Resilient to share her story. Even though we live in challenging times we can become Relentlessly Resilient as we lean on and learn from one another's experiences. Hosts Jennie Taylor and Michelle Scharf are no strangers to overcoming adversity; Michelle lost her husband to cancer, while Jennie's husband Major Brent Taylor was killed in the service of our country. Their stories bond them together and now listeners can join them weekly as they visit with others enduring challenges and who teach us how they are exercising resiliency, finding value in their grief, and purpose in moving forward. Christine Stenquist was working at a hospital in Utah in 1996 when she experienced a sharp pain in her head. She lost consciousness and collapsed. After waking up and a series of tests, Christine learned she had a brain tumor and surgery was the next step. This was when Stenquist was just 24-years-old. Surgery was full of complications, a blood vessel was hit and there was hemorrhaging. Doctors were unable to remove the entire tumor, and she slipped into a coma for several days. Christine had also suffered a stroke, affecting her left-side, speech, and balance. The months ahead were tough for Stenquist. She suffered through failed therapies and endured chronic pain. At that point, she began researching medical marijuana. Much to the chagrin of her Marine father. According to Christine, medical pot was the only thing that helped her cope with the pain and helped her regain an appetite. That factor ultimately helped her new career with Utah group TRUCE (Together For Responsible Use and Cannabis Education.) She now travels the country and tells her story as well as pushes for easier access to medical marijuana in all 50 states. Stenquist was recently in Fremont County and held a community meeting at the REACH Foundation. She also stopped into the County 10 offices for a conversation and a podcast with Riverton Local Ladies host Bethany Baldes. We were delighted to have Christine Stenquist sit down with us in-studio. She is the founder and Executive Director for TRUCE (Together for Responsible Use and Cannabis Education) and has been a tireless advocate for the medicinal use of cannabis in Utah. Christine is also the person most responsible for the passage of Proposition 2 last year, but the fight isn't over; Utah's legislators, under pressure from the LDS Church, have been working to water-down the proposition to the point of uselessness. Friend of the show and all-around great person, Brandy Hamrick was, unfortunately, recently diagnosed with cancer. She had to have a large section of her colon removed, got a stoma, and also had a port installed for chemotherapy as she continues her treatment plan. We don't make much from Patreon, but we've decided to give Brandy *ALL* of our Patreon earnings through the end of the year. Please help if you can! You can find her GoFundMe page at this link. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been atypically public in its advocacy for a tightly-controlled and strictly-enforced medical marijuana program in Utah. After joining a coalition effort to oppose Proposition 2 — which would legalize medical cannabis in the state — church leaders joined with some of the initiative’s backers and Utah lawmakers to embrace a negotiated deal expected to be debated and potentially adopted by the Legislature in November. But the announcement of a tentative compromise appeared to be based in the assumption that Proposition 2 would pass, and that critics of the initiative would be forced to weigh what they saw as the lesser of two evils. If Prop 2 fails, what leverage do proponents of legalization have, and will church leaders still advocate for a legislative compromise if the alternative is the status quo? On this week’s episode of “Trib Talk," LDS Church lobbyist Marty Stephens, Utah Patients Coalition director DJ Schanz and Christine Stenquist, executive director of TRUCE, join reporter Benjamin Wood to discuss the new dividing lines in the Prop 2 debate and what voters should expect to happen to medical marijuana laws after the November election. “Trib Talk” is produced by Sara Weber with additional editing by Dan Harrie. Comments and feedback can be sent to tribtalk@sltrib.com, or to @bjaminwood or @tribtalk on Twitter.
