Bori joins Claire to talk about being a good department member. Bori has special experience having been chair of her department up until recently. She thinks her department is doing very well with collegiality and respecting each other professionally. She wonders about encouraging social connection and community as well. Would that help the department maintain cohesion across their curriculum? Claire finds that informal interactions within her department add up to folks generally getting along and feeling comfortable speaking up. She is working on promoting a positive tone in the department discourse. While everyone is working on improvements to the department, we must be proud of the things we do well. https://rctaudio.com/profpodcastClaire mentioned The Lives of Christopher Chant, by Diana Wynne Jones

Thank you again to Patricia for commissioning this entire book! This was such a fun one, and I think this is my favorite finale of all the Diana Wynne Jones books so far. This series of chapters, Christopher has to retrieve the Chrestomanci's lives from where they've been called into series Eleven, and it takes all of Tacroy's training to get him in and out of there in one piece. He winds up having to sacrifice one of his extra lives, and now he's just got the two left. Meanwhile, Throgmorten is unleashed on Uncle Ralph and it's honestly so wonderful. Sweet, sweet justice. Thanks for listening, and I will see you again soon with a new episode!

Thank you to Patricia for commissioning this episode! It's almost time to say goodbye to these characters, and I really don't want to do it. This book has been so much fun and I kind of want there to be an ongoing series with these characters and their hijinks. Because, boy, do they get up to hijinks. These chapters are mostly about Tacroy being captured and the revelation (FINALLY) that Christopher has about his involvement with the Wraith and the illegal smuggling. Shockingly, though, Tacroy manages to cover for Christopher and lies his butt off. Meanwhile, the Goddess's kitten is adorable and I want one. Thank you so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

Thank you so much to Patricia for commissioning this next episode of this wonderful book. This section, it turns out that the Chrestomanci's people have found out that Tacroy (aka Mordecai) was one of the Wraiths, and they are questioning him very closely but he manages to really cover for Christopher and nobody suspects his involvement at all. This is curious since Chrestomanci knows that Christopher has been spirit traveling, but hey. Speaking of, the Godden tricks him and gets him stuck in a wall until she can bully him into helping her figure out what happens after her stint as the goddess is over...turns out that they're totally gonna kill her. Whoops! So guess what, she runs off to Christopher's world! Thank you so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

Thank you to Patricia for continuing to commission this book! I'm stoked that this series of chapters is all focused on Christopher's magical education, because I'm very eager for him to finally prove himself. Christopher is not happy living at Chrestomanci castle. He's the only young person there, nobody really cares about talking to him or entertaining him, the magic built into the place is oppressive, and he's not allowed off the grounds due to the magical barriers. Even though his tutor is a sweet, reasonable guy, Christopher can't make himself pleasant and it's taking a toll. Also, he dies two more times. Honestly, Christopher, you are just hopeless. Thanks for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

Huge thank-you to Patricia for commissioning this episode! I'm so loving this book! We're really cooking with gas in these chapters, which focus on Christopher finally getting to the root of his issue with magic not working and managing to pull off some serious spellwork on his first try. He's so unprepared for how strongly his magic will respond that when he's asked to levitate a book, he manages to levitate the roof right off the fucking building. This means, however, that his plans to be a world-class cricket player are dashed. As much as I don't give a fuck about cricket, I got weirdly invested in this dream of his and also took it quite personally when nobody seemed to care what he wanted in the slightest. Anyway, I love this book, and I hope you're enjoying the coverage!

Huge thank you to Patricia for commissioning the next episode of this Diana Wynne Jones book, because I'm really needing some comfort lately and this writing is just the ticket. This section, we get a very interesting set of facts and new experiments to puzzle over. First of all, there's the fact that Christopher isn't actually hurt when he comes out of the other world, but he does get "killed" in almost an identical way just a few hours later. Only he doesn't actually die, and while I attributed that to the Last Governess, now I realize she might not have had much to do with it in the end. Secondly, there's the changes with Christopher going to school and getting metal installed in his mouth. This is interfering with his performance, and I'm dying to see him in his magic class without that in his mouth because I'm sure it's going to be startling. Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

Thank you again to Patricia for commissioning another Diana Wynne Jones joint! This book is a real change from the others, because it's not a whole new world and new story. Instead, it's a prequel to Charmed Life, and it proves to actually be pretty fascinating. Christopher is an only child, and his parents could really give a shit about him. Thus, they miss his very clear burgeoning magical talents and it is no surprise that a sketchy uncle is able to swoop in and flatter the kid into doing pretty much whatever he wants. Thank you all for listening, and hopefully I will see you soon with a new episode!

In a long-awaited episode, Dan and Neil are joined by special guest Christopher Chant to discuss the Oscar-winning picture Whiplash, a film which tells the story of the relationship between budding jazz drummer Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller) and his tutor Terence Fletcher (JK Simmons), and how their worlds collide in a quest for perfection. In a deep and serious episode, we share information on coaching and mentoring techniques that we have observed and used, exchange thoughts on how to motivate others and ourselves, talk about balancing personal and professional commitments, and ways that we can demonstrate/uncover skill. Your hosts share their own experiences from the world of music, discuss other famous big-screen student-pupil relationships, and Neil takes every possible opportunity to reference Damien Chazelle's follow-up film La La Land. We interrupt our regularly-scheduled programming to bring you our first emergency broadcast! Hot on the heels of our discussion of The Deadly Assassin comes the announcement of the new Doctor, with Jodie Whittaker becoming the first woman to play the show's leading role. In an episode where Neil and Dan spend most of their time agreeing with each other for a change, we delve into the inevitable social media outrage, discuss the reasons why the announcement points to an exciting future, bemoan the lack of non-violent superheroes in the modern age, and debate the nature of fandoms. As usual, Dan brings a wealth of experience from the world of Doctor Who, outlining the history of strong female figures in the show, both in front of and behind the camera. In our first venture into the world of Doctor Who, guest Andrew Morton adds to Dan's expertise (and Neil's ignorance) to unpack a Fourth Doctor story which has vibes of The Manchurian Candidate and The Matrix (with a bit of a whodunnit and a courtroom drama in the middle). Plus there are fisticuffs! We take a reverential look at some of the series' tropes, including The Doctor's skill at hiding behind things, the speed at which cliffhangers are negated, stilted deathbed monologues and a villain's inability to finish off his enemy. We also analyse The Master's ability to turn people into Action Man dolls, short-sighted writers creating continuity nightmares, wonder whether the Timelords would do well to invest in two-factor authentication, and make very early plans for Screen Testing's thirty-year anniversary episode.
