The creature that had been discovered at sea is recaptured by its own kind, killing two UNIT soldiers in the process. UNIT immediately initiate first contact between the two species. Both agree to a treaty of peace, and the Homo Aqua simultaneously reveal their presence to humanity worldwide, desiring to speak to all humans. A meeting is set up in London and several members of the Homo Aqua are seen for the first time. They introduce their humanoid ambassador, Salt, who requests that Barclay serves as the human ambassador. Barclay agrees. 2 "Plastic Apocalypse" Dylan Holmes Williams Pete McTighe 7 December 2025 3.56 Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, the commander-in-chief of UNIT, agrees to work with Barclay to carry out diplomatic negotiations with Homo Aqua, who wish for worldwide pollution to cease. Barclay's estranged family is brought into UNIT custody for safety while UNIT scientists examine eggs breed by the Homo Aqua that had been affected by pollution. At the next meeting, Salt requests water from the River Thames for Barclay to drink. Due to the water's contamination, Barclay refuses and, against UNIT instruction, chooses to acknowledges humanity's mistakes instead. Humanity presents a plan to reduce pollution within forty years, which Salt disagrees with. In response, a storm releases all the plastic from the world's waters back onto land. When world leaders challenge Salt, Barclay agrees to meet with the Homo Aqua under the Atlantic Ocean in the Romanche Gap. 3 "The Deep" Dylan Holmes Williams Pete McTighe 14 December 2025 TBD A UNIT team, consisting of Barclay, General Austin Pierce, Min Tso, Captain Louise Mackey, and diplomatic representatives Ravi Singh and Ted Campbell, are assembled for the underwater meeting; Campbell brings a globe as a gift for Salt. During their submarine descent, Kate meets at Downing Street with Prime Minister Harry Shaw and General Oscar Gunsberg with tensions rising over who owns the world's water. A new war plan named "Severance" is prepared without the knowledge of UNIT. Under the water, the submarine team exit into an environment created for them by the Sea Devils. UNIT colonel Cristofer Ibrahim is assassinated while with Kate on the surface, by an unknown assailant. Once the submarine team are stood in front of the Homo Aqua assembly, Campbell presents the globe as a gift, only to reveal that he is a mole and the globe is a concealed bomb which he detonates. 4 "The Witch of the Waterfall" Dylan Holmes Williams Pete McTighe 14 December 2025 TBD The entire submarine crew, with the exception of Barclay, are killed by the detonation. As Salt safely returns Barclay to land, a deepfake video of her is shown to the public, threatening any human who enters the water. Salt is captured by UNIT, until Barclay rescues her, both immediately becoming fugitives. Shaw is pressured into moving forward with Severance, spearheaded by Gunsberg. Meanwhile, Kate meets Salt's successor, Tide, who informs Downing Street that Salt is considered a traitor for saving a human and is subject to execution. Salt and Barclay go on the run from both UNIT and Severance while Kate struggles to cope with the death of Ibrahim. Barclay contacts his wife Barbara and requests they rendezvous with a vehicle on Lambeth Bridge, with a plan to meet an ally in North Wales and attempt contact with Kate. They are ambushed by UNIT and Severance operatives. When it is revealed that the video of Salt is a deepfake, Kate orders UNIT to fire at Severance just as Salt releases a vocal high-pitched shriek, giving her time to escape into the Thames. In retaliation, Tide threatens to use rust to end humanity. 5 "The End of the War" Dylan Holmes Williams Russell T Davies 21 December 2025 TBD Disagreements continue to occur over the melting ice. Kate hallucinates Colonel Ibrahim. She requests her therapist for an increase of her prescription for paroxetine, but is threatened with being signed off. Kate bribes her in response. Barclay is medically assessed and begins secret nightly visits to Herne Bay, calling for Salt in the sea. Kate presses Prime Minister Shaw for information about the word 'severance', who denies having any knowledge of it. After blocking a signal disruptor used to prevent Salt contacting Barclay, they finally meet. Salt tells Barclay to use the word 'accord', which has ancient meaning. Barclay informs Kate and they plan to disguise the message throughout the oceans. Dead Sea Devils begin to show up at shores and at the surface of lakes, rivers and oceans throughout the world. Kate deduces that this is Severance. At Downing Street it is revealed that the virus is engineered to only affect nine out of every ten Sea Devils. The Sea Devils surrender and inform humanity that they have won the war, but to be wary of water in the future. Kate drives Barclay to the sea, who finds Salt there. Salt gives Barclay gills, and they swim away together. A man drops a plastic bottle, who after refusing to pick it up, Kate threatens with a gun. Production Development In July 2024, Deadline Hollywood reported a new Doctor Who spin-off titled The War Between the Land and the Sea was set to begin filming in September.[3] Russell T Davies confirmed later that month at San Diego Comic Con that production would begin in August.[4] Produced by Bad Wolf and BBC Studios, Davies served as executive producer along with Pete McTighe, Joel Collins, Julie Gardner, and Jane Tranter.[5][6] Edoardo Ferretti took on the role of television producer with pre-production underway by July 2024.[7] Casting Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw lead the series with Jemma Redgrave and Alexander Devrient reprising their roles from Doctor Who as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Colonel Ibrahim, respectively.[1][8] Tovey and Mbatha-Raw previously played Alonso Frame and Tish Jones in Doctor Who.[9] Ruth Madeley also returns from Doctor Who, playing Shirley Anne Bingham. Colin McFarlane reprises his role as General Austin Pierce, a character first introduced and last seen fifteen years prior in the third series of Torchwood, another Doctor Who spin-off.[10] Adrian Lukis, Patrick Baladi, Vincent Franklin, Francesca Corney and Mei Mac were announced as additional cast members in October 2024.[11] Writing The five-part series was written by Davies and Pete McTighe.[12] According to McTighe, Davies had already devised the series' concept and scripted its first episode prior to writing the 60th anniversary specials of Doctor Who,[13] which marked the beginning of his second tenure on the series as writer and showrunner. After McTighe delivered the first draft of "Lucky Day", his episode of the fifteenth series of Doctor Who (and third for the show as a whole), Davies asked him to collaborate on the remainder of the spin-off in 2023.[13] The two split writing duties across the programme, with Davies writing the finale in addition to his existing opening script, and McTighe the second, third and fourth episodes; Davies initially stated he had co-written the fourth with McTighe,[14] but was subsequently not co-credited in the episode itself.[15] Following filming wrapping on series 15 of Doctor Who, the first read-through for all five episodes occurred on 19 August 2024.[7] Filming Some filming took place internationally, including on Mallorca.[16] All episodes were produced in one block, compared to the two to three blocks that would usually be used for five episodes.[17] Location shooting began on 29 August 2024 in Barry and Atlantic Wharf, both in south Wales. Filming continued into September in various locations across Wales, including at the Welsh Government Building, City Arms pub, Hodge House, and Merthyr Mawr. In October, the series was spotted filming at Cardiff City Hall and National Museum Cardiff. November filming occurred

Power remarked that this was the case for The War Between the Land and the Sea and awarded 2 out of 5 stars.[22] Writing for The Guardian, Lucy Mangan gave 3 out of 5, feeling that the spin-off was "an opportunity wasted", comparing it in an inferior light to Russell T Davies' previous show, Years and Years.[23] Several outlets praised the performance of returning actress Jemma Redgrave, including Radio Times, SciFi Pulse and The London Standard.[24][25][26] Isobel Lewis, writing for The i Paper, compared the show to Torchwood, highlighting the use of profanity. Lewis praised Davies' "willingness" to "not simply feed fans the same stories over and over", noting how the finales featuring Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor often "struggled to stick the landing".[27]

Tom and guests Arifa Akbar and Nick Hilton consider Paddington The Musical. It's the latest step for a beloved British institution... How does he work on stage? Is the bear believable? Are the songs memorable?Iranian director Jafar Panahi's latest film has won the Palme d'Or. It Was Just An Accident, straddles a difficult gap between political commentary and a lightly comic look at revenge. He had to make this film in secret and has just been sentenced - in absentia - to a prison sentence by the Iranian authorities for "propaganda activities" against the country. In The War Between the Land and the Sea, the latest offshoot of the Whoniverse, Russell Tovey plays a humble admin assistant who is promoted to humanity's Ambassador when the Sea Devils return and decide that humans need to be taught respect for their watery world. The War Between the Land and the Sea is just a few days away from broadcast. So, before the Sea Devils (Homo Aqua if you prefer - although you're about to hear how inaccurate it is from our resident Latin scholar!) return to our screens, we've taken a look at the previous stories in which the feature. So, what do John, Steevie, Dave and Kenny think of The Sea Devils, Warriors of the Deep and Legend of the Sea Devils?
The Sea Devils return to our TV screens this weekend - but in a new way! The Third Doctor tale is being given a new lease of life through a 90 minute new edit, and Benjamin Cook tells us about it. Plus, Mark Ayres discusses the audio side of things, and how a new score has been created for the story by Lorne Balfe. Plus, Peter Crocker discusses the picture restoration (from a previous episode of the podcast!).
The wait is over! Well, sort of, because Stranger Things returns to Netflix this week for the first part of its final season to whet our collective appetites for the final assault on the Upside Down at the end of the year (44:50). Plus the Notorious RTD is back with his latest spin-off to the Whoiverse, setting Russell Tovey on a collision course with Gugu Mbatha-Raw in Sea Devil spectacular The War Between The Land And The Sea on BBC1 (1:02:31). And finally, we're up to our ears in blood, balls and boobs as we return to ancient Rome for a sequel/reboot/retcon of Starz swords-and-sandals franchise in Spartacus: House Of Ashur on MGM+ (1:20:45). (Episode 365)Note: time stamps are approximate as the ads throw them out, so are only meant as a guide. "There Should Have Been Another Way" Production 6M: "Warriors of the Deep" (January 5-13, 1984) Classic Doctor Who Season 21 Premiere Review In the year 2084, the Fifth Doctor, Tegan, and Turlough materialize at Sea Base Four, a military installation staffed with personnel on high alert due to tensions that could trigger World War III. An unknown object lurking in the waters proves to be a Silurian battlecruiser seeking to revive suspended animation Sea Devil warriors stored in underwater chambers. The reptilian cousins plan to manipulate the base's weapon systems to start a nuclear war, wiping out humanity so they can reclaim Earth as their ancestral home. Join podcaster John S. Drew and acclaimed writer/editor Jim Beard as they master time and space, delivering comprehensive reviews of every Classic Doctor Who serial. In this Season 21 premiere analysis covering this notorious production, they discuss: Production Nightmare Behind the Scenes: Margaret Thatcher's election sabotage - The 1983 UK general election announcement created BBC studio space demands, costing Doctor Who two weeks of production time and forcing rushed filming with minimal rehearsal The infamous Myrka disaster - The creature costume was still being sculpted and painted an hour before shooting, with wet paint and adhesive fumes getting one operator high. The poorly-fitted suit left performers uncomfortable and unable to rehearse, resulting in slow-motion movements that destroyed any sense of menace Johnny Byrne's disappointment - The writer envisioned dark, Alien-inspired sets with the Myrka glimpsed briefly in shadows, not brightly-lit corridors showcasing every flaw. He vowed never to work for Doctor Who again Character and Story Analysis: The Doctor's uncharacteristic violence - Jim questions Byrne's characterization showing the Fifth Doctor as naive, foolish, and suddenly engaging in unnecessary hand-to-hand combat Tegan and Turlough's evolving dynamic - The companions finally bond over eye-rolling about the Doctor, though both still don't want to be traveling in the TARDIS. Tegan suffers through another story of being trapped, taken hostage, and reduced to damsel-in-distress after her previous action hero moments The moral dilemma arrives too late - Part 4's ethical debate about genocide feels rushed when it should have been developed earlier. Jim controversially argues the Doctor was wrong to hesitate using the hexachromite gas with billions of lives at stake Base Under Siege formula exhaustion - After 21 years, this well-worn plot structure offers no surprises: the paranoid commander, the likable female officer, the traitors within, the invaders, the giant creature. Viewers who've watched for two decades have seen it all before Design and Direction Problems: Moon Base Alpha aesthetic - The overly-bright, sterile sets fail to convey an underwater atmosphere despite occasional model shots of the Silurian ship Dr. No radiation suits - The guards' helmets appear identical to the 1962 Bond film's radiation gear (the wiki claims they're the actual costumes, though Jim remains skeptical) Laughable battle sequences - No muzzle flashes or laser beams, just actors pointing rifles in extreme slow motion. Quick cuts could have salvaged excitement, but Roberts' clumsy direction makes conflicts feel like rehearsals rather than life-or-death struggles Skirt Gate - The famous blooper where a falling door clearly weighs nothing as Janet Fielding's every tiny movement lifts it Ingrid Pitt's karate vs. the Myrka - The former Hammer horror star (playing Dr. Solow) deliberately aged herself up and performed unconvincing martial arts against the creature in an obvious first-take Reptilian Reunion: First team-up of Silurians and Sea Devils - Despite being "cousins," the two reptilian species look nothing alike, with Sea Devils acting as subservient warriors to Silurian scientists Redesigned Sea Devils - New helmets with Asian-influenced design reminiscent of Buck Rogers' Draconians, with illuminated third eyes solving the mouth-movement problem Jim argues this represents Doctor Who's aging fanbase problem - like 1980s comics, the show wasn't attracting new young viewers, leaving only "cranky old fans" who'd seen every trope before. The hosts debate whether the Doctor's final moment of regret will carry into the next serial, with John insisting it must affect the character going forward. Extended Listener Mail Segment: The episode features six emails discussing The Five Doctors, providing retrospective thoughts on the anniversary special, Tom Baker's absence, Richard Hurndall's performance, and various behind-the-scenes details. A Hamster With a Blunt Penknife - a Doctor Who Commentary podcast
Joe & Jon; 'Not a bad date, am I?' Jon Arnold takes on the almost impossible task of finding jolly things to say about one of the most derided episodes of Doctor Who. And boy we laugh a lot.
After a hiatus you get two episodes on top of each other. So it seems only appropraite to do the same... Indefinable Magic Bite Size are immediate reactions to the latest Doctor Who episodes, but instead of being straightforward reviews they consider an aspect of the fresh adventure and use it to examine life, fandom and Doctor Who in general. Tonight, with the Fab Four (well, two of them) svaing the day and - of course - a twist at the end, your host Toby Hadoke looks at the Beatles and music in Doctor Who in general to see how the use of popular tunes has changed over the years and what they bring to the show. And he talks about mix tapes, recording off air, and tryng to get down and funky in the bedroom to Malcolm Clarke's Sea Devils score.
This month Andy and Alex tackle the former's 'birth story' The Sea Devils. As usual, the pair find much to enjoy here but have lots of questions too... How can one take a motorbike or walk ten miles over open country between an island and the mainland? What are the ingredients of kai? Is is easy to drive a hovercraft without any training? and What is in Jo's aubergine handbag? They both struggle with Pertwee at his most pompous, and how here the Doctor is not so very different from the stories other privileged establishment white male characters: Trenchard and Walker. They are also disappointed that more is not made of the obvious parallels with colonialism and the eradication of indigenous people. However, they both 'love a Sea Devil' and appreciate Jo when she gets the chance to be intrepid, even if her cream outfit must have been a nightmare for the continuity people. All this and 'sexing a Sea Devil', capes to wear 'about town', and a detailed analysis of 'Sandwich-Gate'. The episode is peppered with reflections from director Michael E. Briant whose autobiography Andy edited and published back in the day and is still available from Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Who-Michael-Briant-Memoir-Director/dp/0956100066/ Next Time: The Five Doctors

It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until 30 April 2024, and on general sale after this date. 13.1 Storm of the Sea Devils by David K Barnes (4 parts) Surgeon Lieutenant Harry Sullivan is supposed to be on holiday. But his arrival in Calcutta is intercepted by someone from the local branch of UNIT - a staff member called Naomi Cross. A businessman in the area has mysteriously cancelled the opening of his new hotel... and local villagers have reported sightings of 'devils' in the swamps. Devils that look very familiar from the UNIT files... The businessman requires medical aid so UNIT have decided to send him a doctor. Unfortunately, when Harry and Naomi arrive on site they find a different Doctor has got there ahead of them... And that's just the start of their troubles. 13.2 Worlds Beyond by Robert Khan and Tom Salinsky (2 parts) The Doctor, Harry and Naomi have arrived on a luxury resort world where custom-made holidays are provided for every visitor. Their minds are scanned and their ideal getaway is planned. Naomi gets an activity break by the sea, Harry explores a crumbling ruin and the Doctor ends up playing chess with Alan Turing. All seems idyllic... but every paradise must have a snake... mustn't it? **Please note: the collector's edition CD box set is strictly limited to 1,500 copies**
Welcome back to our “Beasts” Double Bill! Last time, we watched "The Dummy" from the infamous anthology series by General Witchfinders hero Nigel Kneale. We now leave the smashed-up movie set of "The Dummy" with its snarling Y-fronts-wearing jilted actor and join Angie and Roger Truscott in their secluded Hampshire home for "During Barty's Party." This episode features the only actual 'beasts' as the main threat: in this case, large, super-evolved, intelligent rats. Elizabeth Sellars plays Angie Truscott, known for "The Mummy's Shroud," and Anthony Bate plays Roger Truscott, heavily channeling Michael Bryant's Peter Brock character from "The Stone Tape." Bate was cast as Doctor Fendehman in "Image of the Fendahl" but dropped out, with Denis Lill taking the role. Colin Bell plays Barty Wills, the local DJ hosting the titular "Barty's Party," his regular rock and roll radio show. Like the rest of the cast, Bell is only heard, not seen. He is seen, however, in "The Sea Devils" and "Invasion of the Dinosaurs," both Jon Pertwee stories. Norman Mitchell plays the Police Sergeant. Supposedly, at 18, Mitchell walked from Sheffield to London to become an actor, leading to nearly 200 film appearances, 500 radio broadcasts, and an estimated 2,000 television appearances. He developed a niche of playing policemen, appearing as such in 12 episodes of "Worzel Gummidge," "Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell" (more on this very soon), "And Now the Screaming Starts!", "Oliver!" and the first Doctor Who Christmas episode, "The Feast of Steven." John Rhys-Davies plays Peter Newell. Famous for his parts in Lord of the Rings and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Rhys-Daviesis a supporter of the British Conservative Party, Rhys-Davies was a radical leftist in the '60s, who tried to heckle a young Tory MP. But the parliamentarian "shot down the first two hecklers in such brilliant fashion that I decided I ought for once to shut up and listen". The MP was Margaret Thatcher. He is a supporter of Brexit. On 25 April 2019, he appeared as a panellist on the BBC's Question Time. His conduct on the programme towards politician Caroline Lucas was later described as "thuggish and sexist" by some viewers. Oh, it's lovely rediscovering a story one has always thought was OK but nothing special. It's Doctor who, of course it's special! And it's got Roger Delgado watching The Clangers, Jon Pertwee eating a sandwich during a swordfight, some cracking cliffhangers, and THAT shot of the Sea Devils emerging from the waves. But will some or any of these make it into the list of the story's best bits according to host Toby Hadoke and guest Steve Hatcher. Well, there's only one way to find out - dive in! It's 2024! But there are no new episodes of Doctor Who yet this, at least until May 2024. When in May? The Three Who Rule have thoughts and opinions on this scheduling conundrum, as well as updates on the upcoming Gallifrey One convention in Los Angeles, semi-confirmation of the upcoming Sea Devil spinoff The War Between The Land and the Sea, some stats of little to no consequence, and more! As we crawl ever closer to the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who and three David Tennant specials the news has gone from a trickle to a flood and the Three Who Rule are struggling to stay above the waves of information and indeed, this very strained metaphor. We have a release date (November 25!), a Disney+ trailer, a press release, promo pics, writer news, BluRay and Big Finish updates, a Humble Bundle and most importantly, a project to create the longest Doctor Who scarf ever. Thrill to our debate as to what makes a “proper” Doctor Who scarf and discover if you are a Scarf Truther or merely sane.
