Robert is the author of The Tainted Cup, The Divine Cities trilogy and The Founders Trilogy. A Drop of Corruption, the sequel to The Tainted Cup, is out now. His work has received the Edgar Award, the Shirley Jackson Award, and the Phillip K. Dick Citation of Excellence, and he has been shortlisted for the World Fantasy, British Fantasy, and Locus Awards. He also dug a very good french drain in his backyard back in 2019.We had a great chat with Robert, hearing about why he moved into writing fantasy after early award success with other genres, and why he believes it is a framework for any kind of story you want to tell. We also hear why he now plans his novels rather than pantsing as he did before, and we talk about the importance of finding the heart of the story before you start writing.Links:Buy Robert's books nowFollow Robert on BlueskyVisit Robert's websiteSupport us on Patreon and get great benefits!: https://www.patreon.com/ukpageonePage One - The Writer's Podcast is brought to you by Write Gear, creators of Page One - the Writer's Notebook. American Nocturne is a tour de force of dark fantasy from two-time Bram Stoker Award-winning author Hank Schwaeble, a collection of original, first-time stories of horror and noir alongside a select number of his published short fiction combined in what Edgar Award-winner Robert Jackson Bennett describes as "a hardboiled journey into the spectral nightscape at the edges of Americana." A merging of Sin City and LA Confidential, with a touch of Twilight Zone for added spice, American Nocturne includes what could be the LAST authorised Carl Kolchak/Night Stalker novella. Featuring a rousing Introduction by NY Times best-selling author Jonathan Maberry, AMERICAN NOCTURNE is a feast for the imagination, a smorgasbord of stories for those who like their thrills dark and dangerous. "Stunning! I love your podcast and am in a pickle, I hope you can help. It’s my best friends Birthday, and she is turning 25 today! The past year has been terrible for her. She lost her dad to Covid and moved from coast to coast to be with her family. She (and I) have been feeling quite down and hopeless about love and feel that it is just not going to happen for us. I am trying to be as optimistic as possible but coming up short. She has taken strides towards making a better career for herself (in AAPI Mental health) going to grad school soon. Could you please recommend a book, fiction or non fiction, to lift up her spirits and help with the inevitable quarter life crisis? Something with preferably a happy/hopeful ending and not a lot of trauma. Look forward to your recommendation, Love, A lost Friend 2. I have a friend who I know likes reading and has a birthday coming up in April and I would love to get her a book she will enjoy.  She likes social justice issues, and recently enjoyed reading the Hate U Give. I would like another book similar that explores issues in an interesting way, we are in our early twenties so does not have to be YA. She does also enjoy fantasy so it also could be set in a different world. LGBTQI+ themes are very welcome.  Thanks, -Monica 3. Sorry for the last minute but …I recently grabbed Lawbreaking ladies by Erika Own and was wanting more anthologies about females. I love regency era and was wondering if there were any books like this about female rulers or female celebrities. Preferably nonfiction but I guess any female led anthologies would do. I have A Universe of Wishes that came out last December.  -Rianna 4. Hi! I am looking for books as either how to guides or inspiration on living a life that is less consumer focused. I’m interested in environmental sustainability as well as economic sustainability. I’m trying to retrain my brain from turning want into need and from thinking I need to spend money on all the things in order to be happy, but ignoring/avoiding all the marketing designed to make me think those things is hard to do. I’m currently reading “Braiding Sweetgrass” which is inspiring me to do more and be better, not just for my wallet and personal well-being, but for the planet as well. Any resources would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! -Bre 5. Hi there, I’m a 23-year old who has dealt with mental illness for the best part of a decade. In the last few months my depression has become a lot worse. I am still able to read and find it a good escapism from my mind particularly the fantasy genre which I delved into for the first time. However, I’d like to read some more books to help me understand or feel less alone with my condition. I’m open to all genres – fiction, memoir, etc. – though I’d prefer something not too academic/scientific. Also could you avoid Matt Haig (no hate but his books aren’t really for me). Thank you x -Kate 6. Hi, I’ve been listening to a lot of songs from The Beach Boys, they make me think of a relaxing island or beach town. Also, summer is coming!  I know it sounds weird but can you recommend me books that feel like a Beach Boys song. Bonus points if there’s surf involved.  Love from Barcelona, Spain!  -Meri 7. I am looking for adult fantasy romance/epic book recommendations. I became hooked with Sara J. Maas books, and I especially loved the COTAR series. I love the world building, strong female characters and hot heros. I am looking for something epic that’s not YA, with adventure, suspense and definitely a steamy romance, but with good writing! Hi there!    First off, I just wanted to say that I started listening to your podcast a couple of weeks ago and it’s now one of my favourites! I have so many books to add to my TBR pile.   I teach grade nine English, and every day I read out loud to my class from a YA novel. We do a little work with the novel, but I am trying to get them to associate reading with enjoyment for the most part since they generally don’t read on their own.    Right now we are reading Scythe by Neal Shusterman and they are loving it so far! Every time I stop reading they want me to continue (possibly because they want to get out of doing work but I want to give them the benefit of the doubt). I think they like it because it has a little bit of a darker premise and of course it has some good twists and turns.    Do you have any YA recommendations for novels that are similar to Scythe but would be good to read out loud to a wide range of reading abilities? I’m looking for something that is action packed and also a little thought provoking. Dystopias are popular with them but it’s not a deal breaker if you don’t recommend any; it’s good to expand their horizons once in a while. A little romance is okay, but nothing too over the top.   Thanks for your help! -Molly  2. I love reading but as the holidays approach I find myself with less and less time so I’m always getting my library books returned to the library half-finished.   Do you have any recommendations for novellas for a quick and satisfying read. I like sci-fi/fantasy, horror, thrillers, mystery and historical. No romance please. Bonus if it’s a woman writer.   Thanks, -Jayme 3. Hi! I’m looking for a book where you cheer for the villain. I’m NOT looking for a book about hitler or trump. Something kind of silly and fun. When you were watching the roadrunner and coyote, sometimes you wanted the coyote’s plan to work. Or the mad scientist in any cartoon ..sometimes you just want him to have a good day and take over the world. Please no graphic novels or comic books. I want a good novel to get lost in. I’m attaching my goodreads link -Jessica 4. My 12 year old son has recently become very interested in WWII. I’m hoping for middle-grade or slightly above books that discuss the history and also the history of those who lived through it. He is more interested in nonfiction, but he would also likely appreciate a fiction that still explains the history. -Monica 5. I read a pretty eclectic selection and even in non-pandemic years I go through a couple books a week.  Right now I’m looking for total escapism and not anything even close to reality.  I’ve been diving in deeper to different categories that I like, but what I’m really looking for right now are sci-fi/fantasy heist stories.  I loved the Rogues of the Republic series by Patrick Weekes, but I’m having trouble finding anything comparable.  Any suggestions. -Becky 6. Hello! I visited Rome and Sicily (where my mom was born) last year and fell in love with the deep history of Italy. Since we can’t go there right now due to COVID, I have been reading a lot about the history of Italy – specifically Rome and Siicily. But all I have been able to find are non-fiction books which are fine. But, historical fiction is my jam! Do you have any recommendations for historical fiction that take place in Italy? I read a lot about WW2 so preferably before 1900.  -Renee 7. So as I’m sitting here watching the first presidential debate, there’s a part of me that just wants to forget about American politics for awhile and maybe learn about someone else’s. I feel like I’m so hyper-focused on the political topography here in America, but I have no idea how other countries’ governments work. #PodcastersForJustice Award-winning speculative fiction and fantasy novelist, Robert Jackson Bennett, chatted with me about turning genre conventions upside down, how he incorporates critiques on modern society into his writing, and why truth is stranger than fiction. He's the Hugo-nominated author of a handful of critically acclaimed novels including The Divine Cities trilogy and The Founders Trilogy. He has received the Edgar Award, the Shirley Jackson Award, and the Phillip K. Dick Citation of Excellence, and he has been shortlisted for the World Fantasy, British Fantasy, and Locus Awards. Bennett posited the idea of "industrialized magic" in book one of his Founders Trilogy, Foundryside (a Time, Paste, Vulture, and The Verge “Best Fantasy Books of 2018” pick). His second installment in that series is Shorefall, which Kirkus Review called, "Tolkien meets AI .... neatly blending technology, philosophy, and fantasy ... An expertly spun yarn by one of the best fantasy writers on the scene today." I need a book for my book club, preferably fiction. We made the terrible decision of reading both of Sally Rooney’s novels back-to-back and now nothing seems nearly as good as her complex characters and the painfully relatable interactions between them. We are all in our early/mid twenties and enjoy reading books that relate to the painful growing pains of figuring out adulthood and who we are as adults. We love Sally Rooney’s engrossing dialogue, straightforward writing style and her well developed coming-of-age intellectuals. In the past we’ve enjoyed books by Celeste Ng, Anne Patchett and Lydia Davis. Excited to hear your thoughts! -Emily 2. Best underrated Tor novellas?  Thanks!  -Shontelle 3. Looking for fiction/nonfiction about non-cis/non-trans people/characters. I’m interested in people or characters who don’t feel they fit in the gender binary.  -Shaina 4. Hi! First off, I just want to say that I love your podcast. I’ve been listening since the first episode, and it’s been one of my favorite podcasts ever since. I’ve never sent in a recommendation request before, but I figured during quarantine, when I have all the time in the world basically, now would be a good time.  I’m in a strange place in that I consider myself a sci-fi fan because I watch a lot of sci-fi, but I realized recently I haven’t actually read much of it. I’ve read some classic sci-fi, like Dune (which I love), and Foundation (which I didn’t really like), but not much else aside from a lot of Star War novelizations, and Star Trek fanfiction. A few sci-fi books on my radar are Ninefox Gambit, Ancillary Justice, A Memory Called Empire, and The Traitor Baru Cormorant. I think I’m more interested in space opera, or at least sci-fi that isn’t too scientific or mathy, but I’m not really sure. I also would like it if you could recommend to me some gay m/m sci-fi. I’ve found a lot of queer women sci-fi which is awesome, but haven’t been able to find any sci-fi dealing with queer men, which I find a little strange. The only one I have found was Bond of Brass which I picked up because people were saying it was basically finnpoe fanfiction, but I’m not sure why they are saying that since it’s so different in concept as well as the characters. I also found the love interest insufferable, and I’m not sure how much I actually enjoyed the moral question of whether or not the main character should literally fight for the colonists who destroyed his world. I think it could have been an interesting premise, but I didn’t like how it was handled, and the bad love interest on top of it just made it worse for me. I ended up not being able to finish it.  Please no comics or graphic novels please. I’m not sure about YA recs unless you know of a YA that is particularly good, and more on the mature side of things. I don’t usually get on well with YA except for a few exceptions. Thank you again for your amazing podcast!  -Anonymous 5. Hi! I’m looking for a good LGBT read but not a coming out story. I’ve been through the years of figuring out who I am and coming out to people. While that is an important part of my past, it’s not part of my every day. I’m happily married and my wife is pregnant with our first baby. I’m looking for a read where the main character just is gay. I read starless sea and loved it. Any type of fiction is fine except short story or graphic novel.  Thanks! -Jessica 6. I love podcasts and recently listened to Noble Blood about Queen Ranavalona I. And I was fascinated. I love historical regency fiction. Philippa Gregory, Alison Weir, Diana Gabaldon… But I could not find anything on this queen from Madagascar. I would love the help to find something if not on her exactly on any lesser known queens from elsewhere; Elizabeth Bathory, Empress Wu Zetian… I’m up for it all. -Ryeannuh 7. My wife and I have an awesome 8yo daughter. We have a number of picture books that reflect her Two Mom family, but she’s getting older and I would love to find some chapter books that for elementary age kids that feature a character with two moms. Do you have any you can recommend? -Carrie Books Discussed Five Little Indians by Michelle Good (tw: rape, child abuse, racism) Make Your Home Among Strangers by Jennine Capo Crucet Sisters of the Vast Black by Lina Rather The Ghurka and the Lord of Tuesday by Saad Z. Just a note to say that I’ve discovered your podcast and Book Riot in general, really, as a result of quarantine, and I appreciate all of it more than you know. I listen to many episodes of all the BR podcasts each day while working from home, and I’ve built a BR TBR of over 300 books! So, thanks for feeding my rediscovery of a passion and hobby that I missed dearly! One of the first Get Booked recs that I bought, read, and loved was Little & Lion by Brandy Colbert. I could relate to it so much! I have cerebral palsy, and my twin has always seen a need to be maternal toward me, leaving me longing for a true sister relationship rather than feeling like I have multiple mothers and no sisters. The book really helped me to understand that I’m not alone in having a maternalistic sibling, but it also gave me glimpses into a true sibling relationship. Our birthday is in mid-June, and I’d love to gift my sister books like L&L but also books in which the sibling with a disability is a hero/heroine as opposed to the non disabled ones, just as a way to start some dialogue between us! Thanks so much! -Erin 2. I need help finding a book for my mom. She has been in a reading slump for a while and it sucks cause she is my reading buddy and I want her to keep reading with me! She is very picky in what she wants to read. She likes to read heavy adult fantasy (it can be ya) books that have kingdoms, dragons, creatures, and elves (she loves elves). She does prefer for it to have a female leading character that is powerful. Not a lot of sex or vivid description of sex scenes would be preferred. She loved the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas and really any other book by her. She did not like The Hobbit or lord of the rings but she did like The Inheritance  Cycle series by Christopher Paolini. Thank u and please help me cause I miss my reading buddy . – Madison Terry 3. Hello!  Looking for some fantastic audiobook recommendations as I have a few credits expiring this month!  As a school librarian, I read all over the place both genre- and age- wise.  Just looking for books that are particularly best when consumed in audio format! -Rachael 4. Hi I am 13 and looking for a book about witches. I want a book female lead where she is a badass. I would like some sort of romantic arc. Some of my favorite tropes are enemies to friends to lovers or friends to lovers. I also really like books where the ex of the main character is still in the plot. Some books I have read and loved were “How to Hang a Witch” by Adriana Mather and “These Witches Won’t Burn” . I would also love a book about a mixed race kid coming to terms about their sexuality.  -Lili 5. Hi Amanda and Jen!  Thank you so much for your wonderful weekly podcast. You keep a healthy stack on my TBR with all your great recs.  I’m looking for a book (or series) to get on audiobook for my husband for Father’s Day. He has a 2.5 hour commute to work right now and needs something to help him get through it. He loves adventure high fantasy and prefers door stoppers or series for obvious reasons. He is moving through the Red Rising series now which he is loving. Tolkien is his all time favorite author. He has also enjoyed Game of Thrones,  Name of the Wind and The Expanse series . Please help me find him something else that will help keep him occupied for a couple weeks.  Thank you!  -Sarah 6. I am requesting recommendations for my partner, Branden. He is an avid outdoorsman – enjoys hunting, fishing, hiking, all things active outside. He also loves reading, mostly mystery and general fiction. He gets VERY into specific type of book – outdoorsman mysteries. His favorites are the Craig Johnson Longmire mysteries, and the Sean Stranahan mysteries by Keith McCafferty. He also likes the Jack Reacher series, less outdoorsy but fun. I’d love some other recommendations for that type of book as it’s so specific. Bonus points for the protagonist being a hunter, fisherman, etc.  I attached his Goodreads below. Also terribly sorry if you have gotten this question. I haven’t listened to all episodes so please direct me if you have!!!  -Alicia 7. I have been trying to read more science fiction. I recently read Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky and absolutely loved it. It made me really think and question what it means to be human and whether being human is even a good thing. I am trying to find a book that also tackles this subject in a clever and unique way. Bonus points if there is romance and/or steamy-ness. Bonus points if there is a strong female character that kicks butt and takes name but doesn’t necessarily have to be the main protagonist.  -Sam Books Discussed A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Bridgid Kemmerer The Pretty One by Keah Brown (tw: discussion of suicidal ideation, racism, ableism) Wicked Fox by Kat Cho The Element of Fire by Martha Wells (cw: abusive parent) The Third Rainbow Girl by Emma Copley Eisenberg (TW murder) Bluebird Bluebird by Attica Locke, narrated by JD Jackson (cw: racial slurs) Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood Odd One Out by Nic Stone Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett (tw slavery) The Grace of Kings by Ken Liu   The Lost Man by Jane Harper (tw rape, domestic violence, child abuse) As Long As We Both Shall Live by JoAnn Chaney (tw: violence towards women & children, including imprisonment, rape, child abuse, domestic violence; suicide, graphic violence) Semiosis by Sue Burke Xenogenesis/Lilith’s Brood by Octavia Butler (tw: compulsion/coercion, tentacles) (Dawn #1)

The Book Evangelists - Reading and Writing Will Save Us All

In This Episode: The Book Evangelists discuss Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett Morning Chatter: In which we briefly discuss the joys and potential perils of recommending books to friends or potential friends. How do you choose which books to recommend to others? What if they don't like the recommendation? What if you don't like someone else's recommendation? What are Marian's favorite books to recommend to others? What will Lissa say honestly if she doesn't like your book recommendation? The publisher description of Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett: Sancia Grado is a thief, and a damn good one. And her latest target, a heavily guarded warehouse on Tevanne's docks, is nothing her unique abilities can't handle. But unbeknownst to her, Sancia's been sent to steal an artifact of unimaginable power, an object that could revolutionize the magical technology known as scriving. The Merchant Houses who control this magic--the art of using coded commands to imbue everyday objects with sentience--have already used it to transform Tevanne into a vast, remorseless capitalist machine. But if they can unlock the artifact's secrets, they will rewrite the world itself to suit their aims. Now someone in those Houses wants Sancia dead, and the artifact for themselves. And in the city of Tevanne, there's nobody with the power to stop them. To have a chance at surviving—and at stopping the deadly transformation that's under way—Sancia will have to marshal unlikely allies, learn to harness the artifact's power for herself, and undergo her own transformation, one that will turn her into something she could never have imagined. This description is spoiler-free. On the podcast, we discuss Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett in detail and our discussion in the podcast is filled with minor and major spoilers, so please read the book before you listen if you are into that kind of experience. Characters Which characters do we like? Who scares us? Who is our favorite character? Who are we shipping together? Who do we worry about? Who do we hope appears in the second book in this trilogy? The Book Evangelists - Reading and Writing Will Save Us All

In This Episode: The Book Evangelists discuss Dodger by Terry Pratchett Morning Chatter: In which we briefly discuss the disruptions of tornado warnings and completely fail to warn the listener that Lissa has banana bread baking in her oven. Dodger by Terry Pratchett at Goodreads: A storm. Rain-lashed city streets. A flash of lightning. A scruffy lad sees a girl leap desperately from a horse-drawn carriage in a vain attempt to escape her captors. Can the lad stand by and let her be caught again? Of course not, because he's...Dodger. Seventeen-year-old Dodger may be a street urchin, but he gleans a living from London's sewers, and he knows a jewel when he sees one. He's not about to let anything happen to the unknown girl--not even if her fate impacts some of the most powerful people in England. From Dodger's encounter with the mad barber Sweeney Todd to his meetings with the great writer Charles Dickens and the calculating politician Benjamin Disraeli, history and fantasy intertwine in a breathtaking account of adventure and mystery. Beloved and bestselling author Sir Terry Pratchett combines high comedy with deep wisdom in this tale of an unexpected coming-of-age and one remarkable boy's rise in a complex and fascinating world. description from the publisher This blog post is spoiler-free. On the podcast, we discuss Dodger by Terry Pratchett and our discussion is filled with minor spoilers, so please read the book before you listen if you are into that kind of experience. We'll be here for you when you finish! • How do you decide to write about real historical people? Or to reuse other writer's fictional characters? • Why was Marian so excited to see Joseph Bazalgette show up as a character in this story? • As a reader, how do you decide whether to still read or like a book if you disagree with the author's twitter or media reports about their life? • How much does an editor affect the author's work? • What kind of legacy of notes and unfinished manuscripts will you leave behind at the end of your long and prosperous writer's life? How do those additional materials affect reader experience? • What now-long-dead authors would you follow on twitter if you could, to see their day to day thoughts? • How do book recommendations from authors work and why? • And for all of these things - how do we do these things better as writers for our own potential readers? Writing and Reading Experiments: Marian recommends: MasterClass, starting with Neil Gaiman Teaches The Art of Storytelling and has branched out to the Dan Brown and Billy Collins writing classes Lissa panics about the question "What are you Reading?" and will be reading Out Stealing Horses for a book club she leads. She admits she keeps going back to re-read The City in the Middle of the Night instead of reading new books because it is a book "about snuggling" and "about how you figure yourself out." Marian recommends All Systems Red by Martha Wells which has a self-aware murder robot. Next episode: We are reading and listening to the 5-star SF/FF audiobooks and books that we have recommended to each other recently, possibly including The City in the Middle of the Night by Charlie Jane Anders and Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett.

Fictitious Bonus Book Review: Bleak, propulsive, and frighteningly plausible, Robert Jackson Bennett’s concise novella Vigilance examines an America which has embraced gun violence as inevitable and marketable. Yet the greatest weapons wielded in this warning tale are the tools of media manipulation, used to keep a diminishing populace paranoid yet eager for more corporate-sponsored bloodshed.

Robert Jackson Bennett is one of my favorite contemporary fantasy authors. His Divine Cities series—so far comprising the novels City of Stairs and City of Blades—is unlike anything I can recall seeing before, combining urban and epic fantasy with noir thriller to tell a story of adventure and politics and dead gods, redemption and sacrifice. In this week's episode we talked about the series, as well as about genre expectations, writing diversely, naming fantasy characters, and his highly entertaining Twitter presence. In the second segment, Robert's topic was generational differences, though as we went through it we ended up touching on everything from city planning to Fox News. Robert Jackson Bennett joins us on the show this week to talk about his new book, City of Stairs! The city of Bulikov once wielded the powers of the gods to conquer the world, enslaving and brutalizing millions—until its divine protectors were killed. Now Bulikov has become just another colonial outpost of the world's new geopolitical power, but the surreal landscape of the city itself—first shaped, now shattered, by the thousands of miracles its guardians once worked upon it—stands as a constant, haunting reminder of its former supremacy. Into this broken city steps Shara Thivani. Officially, the unassuming young woman is just another junior diplomat sent by Bulikov's oppressors. Unofficially, she is one of her country's most accomplished spies, dispatched to catch a murderer. But as Shara pursues the killer, she starts to suspect that the beings who ruled this terrible place may not be as dead as they seem—and that Bulikov's cruel reign may not yet be over. We also take questions from you, the audience, and ask him what the heck was going on with the video below:
