In case you haven't noticed, there's a lot going on *gestures everywhere*, so rather than get into anything too tragic, as we're wont to do, we've instead gathered some Comfort Media for Interesting Times (™)–that is, the pop culture we turn to when things are rough and we're in need of a boost to help us make it through. We're continuing Diana Wynne Jones' beloved Chestomanci with The Lives of Christopher Chant! We follow Christopher as he journeys through the Anywheres, chafes under the controlling adults in his life, and dedicates himself to cricket and cricket alone. A romp, a revelation, the best time we've had in quite a while - you owe it to yourself to revisit Throgmorten's charms. This episode has laughs and tears AND some very triggering salmon sandwiches. APOLOGIES FOR SOME SOUND ISSUES RIGHT AT THE START AND END OF THIS RECORDING.Amy Twigger Holroyd is Associate Professor of Fashion and Sustainability at Nottingham School of Art & Design (website). Through design-led participatory research, she explores plural possibilities for post-growth fashion systems: alternative ways of living with our clothes that meet our fundamental human needs and respect ecological limits. Her main project pursuing this is Fashion Fictions, which invites you to to imagine, explore and enact enticing alternative fashion worlds. Stage One: Worlds is to write an enticing, possible parallel world (as I type, there are 213 which you can still add to here). Stage Two: Explorations is to generate visual and material is to prototypes of those worlds (eg a mocked-up WhatsApp chat). Stage Three: Enactments is to try and experience the prototyped Worlds. Our conversation covers: -How fashion (the clothes people wear, and how those are created) are an expression of society.-Her motivation: using participatory fiction to expand the sense of possibility, because so many people feel hemmed in.-She's currently excited by the realisation that we can write stories, and then, by enacting them, we can make them real. It is a sort of magic. By the way, the sound problems come from having to use the back-up recording. I hope they don't interfer with your enjoyment too much.LinksKeep & ShareBook Amy co-authored: Historical Perspectives on Sustainable Fashion.Arturo Escobar -- Designs for the Pluriverse: Radical Interdependence, Autonomy, and the Making of WorldsThe Great Transition Initiative, expressed in a book called 'Journey to Earthland' by Paul Raskin.Diana Wynne Jones' series with numbered worlds is Chrestomanci.Kate FletcherTimings0:51 - Q1 What are you doing now? In this episode, Susan and Sinéad do a deep dive into one of Susan's 'soul book's - Diana Wynne Jones' classic Charmed Life. Come with us as we discuss the issues of power and responsibility the novel deals with, as well as a very serious scholarly debate about who is more of a 'peacock' - Chrestomanci or Wizard Howl - and an appreciation for Gwendolen Chant, the most unapologetically evil character in children's literature. We discuss the idea of multiple worlds and the mechanics of travelling between them, and how important it is for Cat, the book's protagonist, to finally step into his own potential, and we share a little about how the masterful Diana Wynne Jones has influenced both of us as writers and as people.Referenced in the episode is the work of:Aishwara Subramanian: "'So Would You Mind Telling Me Where I Am? Spaghetti, magic and Italian cities abound in this episode! We kick off the discussion with the treasure that is Strega Nona by Tomie dePaola. Lovely, naive, almost tapestry-like illustrations and a simple folk tale. And then we indulge in another Diana Wynne Jones: The Magicians of Caprona! In this second book of the Chrestomanci series we visit a world where song is magic, and magic is song. Romeo and Juliet influences are thick in the air; there is, as usual with Diana Wynne Jones, a war just over the horizon. And, if you weren't sold yet, some brilliant cat characters the likes of which we haven't seen since The Amazing Maurice. We reference our Shooting Stars episode about Howl's Moving Castle too, which you can find here. You can see and purchase all the books we've ever discussed at our bookshop dot org shopfront here. In which we have a wonderful time returning to the first Chrestomanci book and remembering how it all began - with a very confused little boy, his parasitic sister and her parallel universe counterpoint. Diana Wynne Jones’ characteristically complex child protagonists are in fine form as we follow Cat, Gwendolen and Janet along on intentional and unintentional capers and world-hopping. Madeleine and Grace reflect on the stressors of childhood and the all-consuming effort to stay out of trouble, made even more complicated by a mysterious half-burned matchbook and grim specters hanging around the castle. Thank you again to Patricia for commissioning this entire book! This was such a fun one, and I think this is my favorite finale of all the Diana Wynne Jones books so far. This series of chapters, Christopher has to retrieve the Chrestomanci's lives from where they've been called into series Eleven, and it takes all of Tacroy's training to get him in and out of there in one piece. He winds up having to sacrifice one of his extra lives, and now he's just got the two left. Meanwhile, Throgmorten is unleashed on Uncle Ralph and it's honestly so wonderful. Sweet, sweet justice. Thanks for listening, and I will see you again soon with a new episode!
Thank you so much to Patricia for commissioning this next episode of this wonderful book. This section, it turns out that the Chrestomanci's people have found out that Tacroy (aka Mordecai) was one of the Wraiths, and they are questioning him very closely but he manages to really cover for Christopher and nobody suspects his involvement at all. This is curious since Chrestomanci knows that Christopher has been spirit traveling, but hey. Speaking of, the Godden tricks him and gets him stuck in a wall until she can bully him into helping her figure out what happens after her stint as the goddess is over...turns out that they're totally gonna kill her. Whoops! So guess what, she runs off to Christopher's world! Thank you so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
Thank you to Patricia for continuing to commission this book! I'm stoked that this series of chapters is all focused on Christopher's magical education, because I'm very eager for him to finally prove himself. Christopher is not happy living at Chrestomanci castle. He's the only young person there, nobody really cares about talking to him or entertaining him, the magic built into the place is oppressive, and he's not allowed off the grounds due to the magical barriers. Even though his tutor is a sweet, reasonable guy, Christopher can't make himself pleasant and it's taking a toll. Also, he dies two more times. Honestly, Christopher, you are just hopeless. Thanks for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

We kick off 2017 with a new franchise, and it's one of Rob's favourites! After some discussion of why Sam may or may not be a fan, we get into some talk about establishing narratives, introductions, and why the story involves a great meta-textual metaphor for growing up. This Week's Watching ROGUE ONE (2016): Gareth Edwards, Felicity Jones, Diego Luna THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (2016): Antoine Fuqua, Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt Recommendations THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE (2005): Andrew Adamson, Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (1977): Stephen Spielberg, Richard Dreyfuss, Teri Garr MRS DOUBTFIRE (1993): Chris Columbus, Robin Williams, Sally Field LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING (2001): Peter Jackson, Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen Footnotes J.K. Rowling's literary predecessor, whom Sam mentions at the start, is the late Diana Wynne Jones, whose Chrestomanci series of books covers some of the same ground as HP. On the subject of books, we also mentioned Jill Murphy and The Worst Witch. There's a good introduction (hah!) to the panning shot Rob talks about, as well as various other camera techniques, here. Here's more on J.K. Rowling's meticulous approach to plotting and, finally, a plug for Peter Jackson's NZ film company (not that he needs one!), where Rob worked in the mid-2000s.

Join us for a spirited discussion of one of our favourite fantasy authors - the late, great Diana Wynne Jones! Author of Howl's Moving Castle, Archer's Goon and the Chrestomanci series, among many others, Diana was described by Neil Gaiman as "...the best writer of magic there is, for readers of any age." But, after so much success, why isn't she a household name? What is her place in today's crowded YA fiction market? And just how much of her difficult childhood is evident in her stories? Our panel of intrepid fantasy fans set out to answer these and other questions on their whistle-stop tour of her life and works.
