Today we're digging into the classic US kids book – Harold and the Purple Crayon. My partner in foolishness is Izolda Trakhtenberg – she's an expert in communication + creativity and has a wealth of experience, from her background in education at NASA to her work as a speaker + podcaster + even, Victorian caroler.  We looked at the importance of ingenuity + lateral thinking in overcoming challenges, drawing parallels between imaginative problem-solving and the entrepreneurial journey. We look at Harold's simple, creative approach to problem-solving - it maps perfectly onto business challenges. Whether he's drawing himself a boat when he's drowning or creating a window around the moon to find his way home, there's something powerful here about lateral thinking and taking direct action - exactly what we need as entrepreneurs. Be sure to look for more shows in this Classics strand, where we continue to uncover the business wisdom unwittingly hidden in timeless tales. Fr. Brian and Fr. Matt explore the treatment of time and place in Here, a 2024 drama film depicting the events of a single spot of land over time. They discuss how this unique perspective, and the non-chronological order in which events are shown, mirrors the omniscience of God, who is similarly outside time. They also consider the passage of time in real life, and the significance of nostalgia and memory in the Christian life. (0:28) Fr. Brian and Fr. Matt open the episode by discussing some of the movies they've seen recently, including Whiplash (2014), Harold and the Purple Crayon (2024), and Didi (2024). Then, they introduce the movie being covered in this episode: Here, a 2024 drama film depicting the events of a single spot of land over time. (6:48) Our hosts discuss the unique format of Here, which is shot from a single, fixed camera angle to show a single spot throughout time, from when dinosaurs roamed the area to the present day. The stories are shown in non-chronological order, allowing the viewer to identify parallels between different experiences in this spot over time. Fr. Brian provides the example of the film's depiction of the Spanish flu alongside the COVID-19 pandemic.(13:42) Fr. Brian talks about one of the main storylines in the film, the lives of a couple played by Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. The hosts also discuss how the plot's focus on time echoes the way time contributes to conflict in classical Greek tragedies. Fr. Brian and Fr. Matt then discuss the significance of sacred time and sacred places. (19:02) Fr. Matt talks about the idea of time passing and changes taking place at his parish, Our Lady of the Rosary on Woodward Avenue in Detroit near Wayne State University. While the parish's ministry today is mostly focused on campus ministry, around 100 years ago the pastor was known to ride his white horse to parishioners' homes for sick calls. Similarly, while Old St. Mary Church is located in a neighborhood called Greektown, its stained glass windows feature the names of German donors who lived there when it was predominately a German neighborhood. Our hosts then talk about how the perspective of the movie—a single camera angle viewing events over time—mirrors the omniscience of God, who is outside time.(25:02) Fr. Brian mentions that the director of Here, Robert Zemeckis, has notably worked on a number of other movies that deal with the passage of time, including Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, and Cast Away. The hosts then turn to the topic of nostalgia and memory in the Christian life, and how the climax of the film shows us that it's in the ability to remember that we see things from different perspectives. (33:40) Fr. Matt and Fr. Brian share some of their critiques of the movie, most notably the aging and “de-aging” technology used to alter the actors' appearances. They then rank the film using their “seeds of the word” rating, based on how clearly they saw goodness, truth, and beauty reflected in the story. Before concluding the episode, Fr. Matt invites listeners to send in their feedback—including which movies they'd like to see covered next—to cinema@aod.org.

You may recognize her from her roles on TV and in movies, including her most recent role as Detective Silva in Harold and the Purple Crayon. Still, actress and infertility advocate Camille Guaty has an even bigger story to share. The story that led her to play the most important role of her life - playing mother to her beloved five-year-old son Morrison. Working in the entertainment industry can be tough for actresses who want to become mothers, and it can be especially difficult for actresses who wait until later in life to have children. So when Camille tried to get pregnant at 38, she knew it would be challenging, but she faced a challenge she never expected: infertility. She went on to endure a four-year IVF journey of relentless effort and heartache – a journey that saw her through 21 of her embryos that didn't take, an emotional pivot to using a donor egg and navigating the painful grief of letting go of the traditional path to motherhood. In her personal story, Camille shares the difficulty of finding a donor, her heartbreak when a donor attempt failed, and her emotional breakthrough after a second embryo took. Her story is one of resilience, acceptance, and ultimate joy, a testament to the strength it takes to embrace the unconventional and find light in the dark.  Thanks for listening!  Don't forget to order Rebecca's new book, Fearless: The New Rules for Unlocking Creativity, Courage, and Success. The Secret Teachings
Zashiki Warashi: Imaginary Friend or Foe (9/18/24)

The Secret Teachings

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 19, 2024 120:01

A recent Hollywood trend has showcased the childhood custom of imagination. Movies like IF, Harold and the Purple Crayon, and Imaginary all tap into the fantasy of childhood, and the potential horrors in the latter case. It's estimated by a report in Psychology Today that by age 7, about 37% of children have Imaginary friends. Sometimes they are animals, other times they are human with varying genders, and other times they are unidentified but speak different languages. The obvious question is whether children are using their imaginations or are the target of supernatural forces. In Ancient Rome there were household deities who were kept and honored for the protections they offered to the home. Inanimate objects in Rome were supposedly brought to life with their own spirit called NUMEN. This is a belief shared by the Japanese with both KAMI and YOKAI, and the famous Hakkiyagyo procession or Kamikakushi. The household spirits of Rome were called Zashiki Warashi in Japan, and they would both protect a home and befriend children to sing songs and play games. In countless horror movies we may recall children talking to spirits in the home before bad things begin to happen. The playful nature of children indicates a level of emotional intelligence separate from logical critical thinking intelligence. Their ability to play imaginary friend is vastly different than the large percentage of adults who may not have any ability at all to imagine or hold inner dialogue. A small recent study published in Psychological Science suggested that 1/10 have no inner speech. Based on the work of Russell Hurlburt, it's estimated that 30-50% of the public has no inner dialogue. They therefore struggle with language, memory, and other things. This has given rise to the idea of the NPC Theory that up to half the population is nothing more than robotic computer-controlled beings. Perhaps the imaginary friends of childhood take possession of the child and push out the newly formed soul-body so that the growing human never develops any sense of self - they are spiritually dead and the body is left only seeking pleasures in the activities of demons. Correlation is not causation but with about 30% of kids having imaginary friends and 30% of adults having no internal dialogue, perhaps there is a connection - especially when we separate real imagination from the supernatural. Those adults then act as automatons. Perhaps that is also why all over the world sacred texts inform us to stay away from certain meats, because they could pollute our body, i.e., place parasites inside of us. -FREE ARCHIVE & RSS: https://www.spreaker.com/show/the-secret-teachings Twitter: https://twitter.com/TST___Radio Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thesecretteachings WEBSITE (BOOKS, RESUBSCRIBE for early show access): http://thesecretteachings.info Paypal: rdgable@yahoo.com CashApp: $rdgable EMAIL: rdgable@yahoo.com / TSTRadio@protonmail.com
