This week, we continue our series of creators we are thankful for as Zach and Mike dive into the Absolute Batman Annual #1, featuring a powerful new story written and illustrated by Daniel Warren Johnson (Do a Powerbomb, Wonder Woman: Dead Earth). Zach breaks down why Johnson's gritty, kinetic art and storytelling make this one of the most striking Batman tales in years. A raw, violent, and deeply human look at what justice means in a broken world. Along the way, the guys talk about Batman as a man of the people, how DWJ balances chaos with compassion, and why his work always manages to punch you in the heart. Then, they revisit one of Johnson's earlier works. The Superman: Red & Blue short story that proves even the Man of Steel's greatest power might be love, empathy, and a good Kansas dad. Things get personal as Zach and Mike reflect on fatherhood, legacy, and the messages that shape who we become. It's an episode that mixes laughs, deep comic talk, and genuine emotion. Everything that makes Bros, Foes, and Heroes what it is. How do we feel about baseball and the World Series? According to the CDC does cookie dough cause autism? What did the boys do for Halloween? Do kids today know Magneto? Was Cody recently on the Crime Time podcast? Does Batman hit people with his Big Boy-mobile in this comic? Was Daniel Warren Johnson made for Absolute Batman? Can you jump right into this annual if you haven't read any other issues of Absolute Batman? Is this comic just Batman vs. Nazis? Is it impossible to police Jake's language? How do we feel about the new Energon universe from Image Comics? Who is Cobra Cunnilingus? Is Batman our most covered topic on the pod? Are there versions of Batman that kill? There's zero doubt, Absolute Batman Annual #1 will be one of the year's most talked-about comics. Featuring three stories by Daniel Warren Johnson, Mike Spicer, James Harren, Dave Stewart, Meredith McClaren, and Clayton Cowles, this hefty comic centers on the early Absolute Universe adventures of Bruce Wayne, revealing how that chonky Batmobile came to be, and just how Black Mask's party animals first encountered the Dark Knight. We read the comic a couple of weeks back, and the instant we flipped that last page, we were compelled to get Daniel Warren Johnson into a Zoom room. Thankfully, he obliged. Johnson's untitled story makes up the bulk of the Absolute Batman Annual. It propels Absolute Batman against a white supremacist horde, showcasing some of the most brutal action from the ongoing series so far, while doing so in a way that questions that violence's effectiveness. As Daniel Warren Johnson has showcased in other comics like Murder Falcon, Do a Powerbomb!, and his recent run on Transformers, badass, jaw-dropping visuals are only half his might as a creator. DWJ breaks hearts as often as he breaks bones. “It's in my blood and it's boiling, and I have to get it out.” In an exclusive conversation with Comic Book Couples Counseling, Johnson explains how his tale in the Absolute Batman Annual came to pass. We discuss his reluctance to contribute to the world so expertly crafted by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, and how one single image eventually caused him to put everything he had into this character and universe. Daniel Warren Johnson tells us why supplying only compelling, catastrophic action isn't enough for him as a storyteller. He requires more than an exclamation point to climax his stories. He needs a question. Absolute Batman Annual is now available from DC Comics. Make sure you're following Daniel Warren Johnson on Blue Sky, Instagram, and his Website. As reported by The Beat, the Eisner-winning comics journalism website (hell yeah), Comic Book Couples Counselingkinda kicked off San Diego Comic-Con International this year with our Live Podcast Recording at Now or Never Comics in Downtown San Diego. On Tuesday, July 22nd, we invited superstar cartoonist Daniel Warren Johnson to chat with us after a signing at the shop. With The Moon Is Following Us recently concluded, his final issues of Transformerson their way, and the Kickstarter launch of his behemoth art book, we had a lot to discuss with DWJ. Today's episode presents the audio from our discussion in full, complete with questions from the audience, and a serious discussion of where The Moon Is Following Us took its readers, without spoiling the narrative for those who have not finished the comic. We also explore Daniel Warren Johnson's relationship with comic book shops and comic conventions. What is his ideal store? Is San Diego different from the many other comic conventions across this country? While our conversation with Daniel Warren Johnson may have launched Comic-Con for us, it represents the conclusion of our SDCC coverage. Please hit those links below to experience pop culture's greatest gathering as we bring numerous other creator interviews to your ears. Phil and Josh look back at a weekend that went the way of The Captain in multiple places. At Indy, Scotty McLaughlin set the four-lap track record for qualifying to earn his first Indy 500 pole. For the second time, Penske swept the front row - even with Alexander Rossi attempting to spoil the party. On the flip side, Grahayame Raehaul almost went home for a second consecutive year while Marcus Ericsson made the last row shootout somewhat interesting with his multiple mishaps but the format needs to be adjusted. The guys go over all of this plus Kyle Larson's chances from the 5th starting position. With only three cars in the Top 12, does Honda have the power to battle Chevy? Scott Dixon is chasing an elusive second Indy 500 win, but has his worst starting position (21st) of his illustrious career. At North Wilkesboro, Joey Logano dominated from pole for his second All-Star Race win. However, the story was Oh, Richard nailing Kyle Busch with a right cross after KyBu turned Stenhouse into the wall two laps into the main event. Keebler Gibbs, DWJ and Gagson advanced through the Open race. Phil and Josh go over the race itself with the addition of the option tire, the post-race shenanigans and what to take from the event as they move to the Coca-Cola 600. The Truck Series race was delayed due to apocalyptic rains that flooded the track, but Corey Heim ended up in his usual spot up front for his third win of 2024. Brendan "Butterbean" Queen along with former CARS Tour driver Layne Riggs were the standouts behind Heim, while Tyler Ankrum and Ty Majeski won the stages. The guys go over all of this and the points heading to Charlotte. Formula 1 was the usual winner, but Fish Lips didn't have it as easy as he usually does. Lando Norris got to his buddy and made FL earn the win at Imola, while Charles Leclerc gave Ferrari a home podium. Oscar Piastri arguably had the fastest car behind FL, but held Kevin Magnussen up in qualifying and copped a five-place grid penalty. Having to come up through traffic at a circuit which is virtually impossible to pass on relegated the McLaren driver. Sir Lewis Hamilton finished sixth but the same issues arise for Mercedes in qualifying and pit stops while Carlos Sainz continues to get the short end as he battles Leclerc at Ferrari. For the GSP Roundup, Phil goes over F2/F3 at Imola, Supercars Perth Supersprint, NHRA Route 66 Nationals in Chicago, MotoGP/Moto2 in Catalunya, and Formula E's doubleheader in Shanghai before the previews. Phil and Josh preview and make their picks for Monaco, Charlotte and Indy before Josh's Sim Segment and Show Close.
For this week's podcast, we're digging out a treasure from the CBCC Patreon Feed: our deep-dive conversation with Daniel Warren Johnson about The Nam # 9. This thorough discussion launched our "Married to Singles" Patreon exclusive series, where we examine the favorite single issues of various comic book creators and critics. It's one thing to dissect an artist's work alongside or in front of them, as we often do, but it's an entirely different thing to scrutinize an artist's work with another artist. Daniel Warren Johnson is a can't-miss cartoonist. If he's on a book, you want that book in your pullbox. Extremity, Murder Falcon, Do a Powerbomb!, and Transformers are essential reads for those obsessed with the comic form. If you want to understand what DWJ does so well, our conversation with him about his passion for Michael Golden gives you another angle. As Johnson remarks in our chat, Michael Golden in The 'Nam # 9 does things he would never do, and those choices mystify and compel him. Johnson came to the Marvel series late in his comic reading history, picking up the first two issues and enjoying them but only coming across the rest of those Golden books years later at C2E2. He profoundly appreciates all those early 'Nam issues, but the ninth one just hits differently. Why? We get into it. After you enjoy our conversation with Daniel Warren Johnson, consider digging into the rest of our "Married to Singles" episodes. We have thorough inspections with Jason Ayers on Uncanny X-Men # 183, Christian Ward on Arkham Asylum, and more. The CBCC Patreon costs as little as $1 a month or $12 a year. You can also purchase these episodes individually, without joining the Patreon, for $3 an episode via our Online Shop. The 'Nam # 9 was originally published by Marvel Comics on May 19, 1987. It was written by Doug Murray, penciled by Michael Golden, inked by John Beatty, and lettered and colored by Phil Felix. G.I. Joe mastermind Larry Hama served as editor, while Jim Shooterwas Editor-in-Chief. You can continue this conversation by following Daniel Warren Johnson on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. Most importantly we let the listener know that this book may not be appropriate for a younger reader because of the violence and tragic death of characters. The father / son duo also talk about spoilers so if you haven't read the first three books you may want to read them first them have a listen. On todays episode, we're talking DWJ's Extremity Kick Starter, a marvel movie and show headline recap, and a wider release coming for the DC character parody film The Peoples Joker. After working our way past the headlines, we get into the reading club! How does Peach Momokos take on mutants differ from mainline comics the massive new title, Ultimate X-Men? What's up with this odd sized Image Comic you picked up called The Last Mermaid? What would've happened if Carter Burke had survived in 1986's Aliens? (We find out in What if... Aliens?, which was penned along with Paul Rieser). Does Chris Condon have another hit on his hands with his comic adaptation of Bary Gifford's Night People? And the last question we'll ask ourselves today is will Keezy Young's Sun Flowers teach you something new about what its like to live with Bipolar disorder? Alllll these answers and more... in this weeks First Issue Club!

On today's episode, we discuss DO A POWERBOMB! by Daniel Warren Johnson ! DWJ continues to be one of the most exciting cartoonists to watch! This book is full of action, humor, and heart. You wont wanna miss it! Few comics operate like Do A Powerbomb! Cartoonist Daniel Warren Johnson does his thing (along with genius colorist Mike Spicer), pulling you in with the most incredible, kinetic, and badass panels while slowly engaging your heart and soul. When the comic reaches its jaw-dropping climax, you're shook and probably requiring a little alone time to get all those uncontrollable tears out of your system. Since the very first issue, we've been championing Do A Powerbomb! We've folded the comic into our all-time favorites, reaching into it and finding ourselves over and over again with every re-read. Daniel Warren Johnson always delivers a wallop with his comics, and yet, we're still surprised when he lands a new blow. In this episode, we drag DWJ into our ring. The conversation is full-spoilers. So, please, read Do A Powerbomb! in its entirety before venturing any further. We would feel absolutely awful if your experience was spoiled in any way by this discussion. Having once read the comic, we believe our chat with Daniel Warren Johnson will elevate your appreciation for the book. We dig into every aspect of the comic, and Dan is extremely generous with his time and consideration. We examine Do A Powerbomb!'s unique origins, tied to Johnson's late-in-life discovery of professional wrestling. We talk about how it initially seeped into his Beta Ray Bill mini-series for Marvel Comics and why he was compelled to smash it into this particular familial saga. And, yeah, we go deep into the comic's absolutely bonkers climax and just how the hell he came up with that epic final confrontation. Oh, and we get some cool future book-related news out of Dan as well. Stay tuned for that. Be sure to follow Daniel Warren Johnson on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. Do A Powerbomb! is now available in comic shops from Image Comics. It will be available in bookstores everywhere on March 7th. Relevant Links to our Do A Powerbomb! In which gods become dogs and get stuck in their bods! We're discussing Dogsbody, by Diana Wynne Jones in all its celestial, dog-brained glory. Sirius the dog star is punished for a mysterious murder by being trapped in an earthly pup form - and his only way back to his galaxy is to find the enigmatic Zoi that he threw down to Earth. Leave it to DWJ to make this conceit at turns heartbreaking, hilarious and ultimately bittersweet. Madeleine maintains that for those similarly traumatized by The Tigger Movie, this is a tough read. Grace is too consumed by big dumb dog thoughts to ponder anything other than dumpster leftovers and the lure of the Wild Hunt. Join us!This episode was a listener request - thank you, quemmegalaxy! Even the best beverage experts out there can still learn a few things about the field. Case in point, the Kings of Drink Mountain learn a very important lesson about dipping snacks in beverages while reviewing a classy, upscale version of their favorite bum wine. Let's just say that Freaknasty would be proud of them. Speaking of nasty, make sure to keep the kiddies and the easily offended away, as America's Favorite Podcast gets a bit edgier than usual while discussing the royal family, unsafe gummy snacks, a DWJ member going (podcast) solo, and meat loaf. No, not that one. Of course, good old Braindead Trivia is along for the ride, as well as another of the world's most trusted beverage reviews. So come along as I dip, you dip, we dip in this episode of Drinks With Josh!

We're investigating the machinations of 7 sometimes-evil wizards with Archer's Goon, by Diana Wynne Jones! Howard Sykes and his family are thrown into a maelstrom when one of their town's behind-the-scenes leaders, Archer, sends his titular Goon to make the family obey his demands. Madeleine and Grace break down the twists and turns of this hilarious and surprisingly contained adventure and discuss why it's ultimately an ode to sibling relationships.
