A mum of 2 herself, Clare has practiced on both sides of the fence - having kept her career consistent either side of having babies, something I have to say that is unusual amongst my guests.    I found Clare on social media, where her reels about the general hilarity of motherhood combined with incredibly educational reels and polls on all things pelvic floor, really impressed me. I don't think I'm alone in feeling like sometimes, Instagram is home to a lot of, erm, rubbish - particularly unfortunately when it comes to motherhood. Clare couldn't be more different. The creativity and thought she puts into her account to make it as digestible and informative as possible really appealed to me. I've always made it a priority to give exceptional people in the postnatal health space a platform, so it wasn't exactly a hard choice to have Clare on.    Clare was brave enough to share with me her incredibly challenging experience with hypothalamic amenorrhea, a severe stress response that effectively results in your periods shutting down. Clare faced a possible early menopause diagnosis at the age of just 24, when she was not only single, but also desperate for a family in her future.    What happened next was an experience in a) always having medical friends nearby, and b) listening to both your body and your gut. Clare went through a whole grieving process for the family she thought possibly wasn't to be, which I cannot even imagine going through, let alone at just 24 years old. Her story from there to 2 babies is a great one.  In a world with a lot of misinformation and myths when it comes to the postnatal experience and our physical recovery, we really need more people like Clare. Introducing this speedy goncales, Clare Bourne.    Host, Editor + Producer: Laetitia Gordon-Furse Sound Editor: Frederick French-Pounce

This is one of the topics that I get asked about the most, and in this week's episode I spoke to Clare Bourne about how to prepare for and manage sex pre and post-partum. Clare is a London-based pelvic health physiotherapist and mum of 2. Having pregnancy and postnatal experience personally, Clare knows what a precious but also vulnerable, and sometimes lonely, experience it can be. Our journey is not all the same, and it's important as someone who's giving/given birth to recognise this. There's so much information out there and too much thinking about what we “should” be feeling. Clare and I delve into how to be ok with what's happening to you and your body, and how to prepare for changes that inevitably take place. Talking to Clare was a breath of fresh air. She speaks to honestly and clearly about what women can really experience around their bodies, births and sex. In this episode Zoe speaks with women's health advocate, pelvic health physiotherapist and mother of two, Clare Bourne.   They talk about pelvic organ prolapse, exercise and Clare's own experience of motherhood. An episode full of invaluable information as well as overcoming the adversity that comes with being a mum, both mentally and physically.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Clare has known her husband since they were teens when they were very close friends. They lost touch for most of their 20s but fate meant they crossed paths again and have now been married for 5 years and have two children. In Clare's early 20s she hadn't had any normal periods, she was diagnosed with hypothalamic amenorrhea. It was a difficult few years for her because she couldn't find a treatment that worked for her as well as the worry of not being able to have children when she was ready. Incredibly, Clare fell pregnant straight away after trying with her Husband and had her daughter 9 months later. Even though Clare was a pelvic physiotherapist she didn't focus on her own pelvic health in her early 20s. Her training was mostly focused around birth and into menopause, we are not told as women that we need to start looking after our pelvic health when we are young, not just after birth or as we age. Clare has a prolapse which she discovered after birth, she believes it was due to a combination of complex reasons, including lack of knowledge before birth and a long pushing stage during labour. After a year of symptoms, she saw a PT that specialised in prolapse rehabilitation and became symptom free. With a prolapse, some women find that they become more symptomatic around ovulation and/or before their period. When suffering with a prolapse it's important to take your own individual needs and experience into account. What exercise might be awful for one person might be totally ok for another and vice versa. Having her own experience with pelvic prolapse had absolutely helped Clare in her work. She has authentic empathy and understanding for her clients. BEST MOMENTS   “The hormone doctors were like, I don't know what do with you!”   “Sometimes too much knowledge is not a good thing”   “I'm becoming more aware of my symptoms and I'm just not afraid of them anymore”   “Sadly, we can't support all the women in the way they need at the moment and that does break my heart a bit”   “Saying to women that there are no blanket rules what we need to teach you is to be in tune with your system”   VALUABLE RESOURCES   www.petalscharity.org www.tommys.org www.arc-uk.org www.sands.org.uk         ABOUT THE GUEST Clare Bourne       ABOUT THE HOST Zoe Cresswell Devoted mother of two (and a big hairy dog), UK trained midwife, doula and personal trainer, specialising in pre and postnatal fitness. Zoe was born in the UK and before moving to Dubai in 2013 and worked as a midwife in central London, both in a birth centre and a very busy NHS hospital. Although late to the scene, Zoe is an aspiring athlete having won numerous triathlons and representing Great Britain where she placed within the top 10 on the world stage. With her husband James, the couple will soon be launching their cloth nappy company, Bop & Bee, where they hope to inspire families to swap a few disposable nappies a day for the more planet friendly option of cloth. Zoe's goal is to share her knowledge and experience, tell real life stories, manage expectations and open up those often difficult conversations. Having another baby when you have pelvic organ prolapse is a big one. There are just so many unknowns. Will pregnancy make your prolapse worse? Would it be better to have a caesarian? Can you do anything to protect yourself? Helen speaks to the pelvic health physio Clare Bourne who opens up about her experience of prolapse:'Even if you know the research, even if you know everything could be ok at some point in the future, in that moment nothing feels fine. It's like you're given this death sentence of "this is your life now".'Clare has gone on to have a second child and tells Helen about her experience of birth, healing and doing it all again. They talk about how to approach pregnancy the next time around, the importance of staying active and about re-writing the narrative around prolapse:'When you come down to it, yes there are changes to those walls, yes there are changes to where those pelvic organs are for some people. However that doesn't mean we're going to live like this forever. And it's that conversation that I think is sometimes missing.'Clare is @clarebournephysio on InstagramHolistic Core Restore is the pelvic-floor-safe fitness programme mentioned in this episode.
