BUFFALO, NY- October 22, 2024 – A new #research paper was #published in Aging (listed by MEDLINE/PubMed as "Aging (Albany NY)" and "Aging-US" by Web of Science), Volume 16, Issue 19 on September 26, 2024, entitled, “Use of the senolytics dasatinib and quercetin for prevention of pelvic organ prolapse in a mouse animal model.” Pelvic organ prolapse is a common condition among women in the U.S., with a 13% estimated risk of requiring surgery by age 80. Senolytic agents like dasatinib and quercetin (D+Q) target age-related cellular senescence and reduce senescent cell activity in various disease processes. In their paper, researchers Erryn Tappy, Haolin Shi, Jessica Pruszynski, and Maria Florian-Rodriguez from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Dallas, utilized a mouse model of pelvic organ prolapse, Fibulin-5 knockout (Fbln-5-/-) mice, to assess the ability of D+Q to prevent development of prolapse. The D+Q injections administered did not result in significant differences in prolapse development but did reduce cellular senescence markers in Fbln-5-/- mice. This suggests senolytic agents may help mitigate the role of cellular senescence in tissue dysfunction associated with prolapse. The researchers suggest that further studies are needed to determine optimal timing, dosage, and delivery of senolytics for prolapse prevention. "This study represents one of the first to evaluate the impact of senolytic agents D+Q on the clinical development of pelvic organ prolapse and expression of proteins associated with cellular senescence in a mouse model.” DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.206120 Corresponding author - Maria Florian-Rodriguez - Maria.Florian-Rodriguez@UTSouthwestern.edu Video short - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTQfjhubx_4 Sign up for free Altmetric alerts about this article - https://aging.altmetric.com/details/email_updates?id=10.18632%2Faging.206120 Subscribe for free publication alerts from Aging - https://www.aging-us.com/subscribe-to-toc-alerts Keywords - aging, pelvic organ prolapse, cellular senescence, senolytic agents, animal model About Aging-US The mission of the journal is to understand the mechanisms surrounding aging and age-related diseases, including cancer as the main cause of death in the modern aged population. POP Club returns! You may remember, way back in season 1, that Helen met up with a couple of local mums who had pelvic organ prolapse and birth injury in common. They became friends, she persuaded them to speak on the podcast and well, the rest is history! In this typically chaotic episode, Helen catches up with Skye and Jess (not their real names) to find out where they're at with their pelvic floor problems. There's frustration over hospital care, nerve damage (pudendal neuralgia) and a missed birth injury. They discuss symptoms - old and new - and Jess makes a new prolapse friend...nearly. That first POP Club! episode led to unofficial POP Clubs forming in the UK and around the world. If you'd like to know more, read this. When we talk about pelvic floor problems after childbirth, you can't escape the fact that many women don't get the birth they wanted or signed up for. A difficult experience can leave you feeling distressed, anxious or traumatised, but how often do you really get to reflect on what happened? And might it be something worth exploring? Illiyin Morrison is a birth trauma specialist midwife and a birth debrief facilitator. Illiyin supports women to overcome a difficult perinatal experience - whether that's pregnancy, birth or postpartum. She's the author of The Birth Debrief and a mum-of-two, who you might know from Instagram as @mixing.up.motherhood. In this episode, Helen and Illiyin discuss what we mean by a birth debrief, who it's for and why it may - or may not - be a useful tool. They talk about how we define trauma, how we begin to pick up the pieces, and how sometimes feeling heard is enough. You can find Illiyin's book, The Birth Debrief: Reflecting on pregnancy, reframing birth, redefining post-partum, hereYou can find Illiyin's website hereFor more support with birth trauma check out:The Birth Trauma Association - UK charity that supports women who suffer birth traumaMake Birth Better - Collective of parents and professionals working to end the suffering from birth traumaMASIC - Charity for mothers with anal sphincter injuries in childbirthYou can find further resources for pelvic floor dysfunction here In a previous episode, Helen discussed the mental health implications of pelvic floor dysfunction with perinatal psychiatrist, Dr Rebecca Moore. Bowel incontinence, also known as faecal incontinence, is estimated to affect up to one in ten women after childbirth. More if you include those who can't hold wind, which may sound trivial but can obviously be pretty mortifying. Severe tears in childbirth are a common cause; third and fourth degree tears - which affect the muscle around the anus. In this episode, Helen is joined by Erica Macdonald - a listener who lives in Devon with her husband and three-year-old daughter. Erica was diagnosed with an anal injury - a severe tear - after her daughter was born and has been living with bowel incontinence ever since. She talks about the impact it's had on her life, her struggle to access support and her decision to take control of her own story:'You know when you're pregnant and you wear a badge on the Tube? It's like me wearing a badge saying 'my bum doesn't work'. And I own that. Helen speaks to Holly Puddephatt, a content creator from Leeds, host of the podcast Me, Myself & Mum Life and mum to toddler, Thea. Holly discovered she had pelvic organ prolapse in October last year, two years after her daughter was born. Like so many of us, she'd never heard of it and was terrified about what it would mean, especially as someone with a huge passion for exercise.'I love exercise. It's a massive part of my life...and I was reading all this stuff online saying you can't run, you can't do this or that. And for me, that would be like ripping my legs off. That's how it felt.'In this episode, Holly describes how she set about reclaiming her life: absorbing as much information as she could, seeking out the support of a pelvic health physiotherapist, practising hypopressives and sourcing a pessary, as well as sharing her journey on social media. THE BALANCED MOMTALITY- Pelvic Floor/Core Rehab For The Pregnant and Postpartum Mom
Hey Girl! Have you been told you have POP or Pelvic Organ Prolapse? Or maybe you feel heaviness or pressure or just feel like something is falling out of your vagina? This can be very scary to first find out about and from personal experience, I can say that it can take over your thoughts and make any exercise or activity seem scary or bad like it will make it worse. This unfortunately, causes a lot of fear around movement and can even contribute to anxiety and depression. Especially if you are a mom still wanting to have more children but not wanting to cause more damage to your body or if you are active and enjoy strength training and heavy lifting or high impact exercises, it can seem like that is no longer an option for you. However, inside this week's episode I am diving into the basics of POP and what we can do for it to manage it conservatively and help you feel more confident as you navigate life and exercise. I talk about pessary's, pressure management, the role of pelvic floor strengthening and how pelvic floor PT can help make sure you can go through all your normal activities without fear or risk of progression. In a future episode I will talk more about the different strategies, tips and exercises that you want to be doing to improve and manage your prolapse. So if you have started to wonder or have been terrified now that you got told you have prolapse, don't fear! It is NOT the end of the world and you can still get pregnant, have more children vaginally and lift heavy! The Episode was made possible by Immune Intel AHCC® & WeNatalThe FDA has rescinded its approval of mesh placed vaginally for uterovaginal prolapse, yet many gynecologists continue this practice, and it comes at the cost of many women's long-term health. My guest in this episode is not a healthcare provider and had no interest in women's health until he started hearing stories of women injured by these procedures. He then started litigating on their behalf and made some friends in high places along the way, including gynecologists, urogynecologists, and many other women's health practitioners trying to right the ship of history towards healing prolapse and healing the women who bring life into the world. Unlike many attorneys, Adam seems to be very empathetic towards women as a consequence of a career highlighted by innumerable “wins” through the legislative process for women harmed by vaginally-placed mesh procedures for prolapse. It's been such a wonderful start to 2024, seeing women progress and feel confident with their movement, core and pelvic floor! So, this week I'm taking on the role of Easter bunny and spreading the love!Too many people STILL cue navel to spine to activate their core and feel demotivated with 'lazy glutes'. No, no, no. Let's get educated and empowered to move in a way that supports and strengthens! As a population, we are largely switched off, stressed and disconnected. We expect to jump into great movement patterns when we exercise, but it takes focused unpicking of habits, followed by re-education and practice of new ones in order for the magic to happen! We need to connect with and restore the breath, to enable the pelvic floor to brace the core... and then bring in a whole glorious symphony of bio-mechanical shifts... that enable the body to move in a way that feels good, supported and ultimately stronger! This is what I passionately try to deliver in each and every class I host. And, whilst I'm taking a break this Easter, I'm treating you to test out the MembersHub FREE for access to 100's of my classes until April 8th 2024... plus if you are super speedy, you can join Fridays LIVE class at 8.45GMT! Can't make it live? Don't worry, within the MembersHub I upload each class, so you can hit play that evening when it suits you! Keen to jump in.... Its www.FitFannyAdams.com/EASTER for your free 18 day trial and a £24pcm should you decide to continue. OR www.FitFannyAdams.com/USEASTER for $30 pcm if you prefer the USD option! Questions or problems logging in? Just drop me an email sarahjane@FitFannyAdams.comAnd who knows, maybe I will see you live on the mat April 8th! x Sj
