Doing this saves baby's lives in pregnancy with Midwife Pip In this episode, I explore one of the most reassuring signs of a healthy pregnancy - fetal movements. From those first fluttery kicks to the regular rolls and jabs later on, monitoring your baby's movements can be a powerful way to stay connected and alert to their well-being. I will share what fetal movement means, when you should start paying attention, and how to track it effectively. We'll also talk about what changes might signal a need to contact your healthcare provider, and why trusting your instincts matters. Why Paternity Leave is Failing Families With Alex Lloyd Hunter Many dads feel under-supported in their role as fathers because traditional gender norms still often place the primary caregiving focus on mothers. While times are slowly changing, many workplaces offer limited paternity leave, making it difficult for dads to bond with their newborns in those crucial early weeks. Even when paternity leave is available, there can be pressure—social or professional—to return to work quickly, reinforcing the outdated idea that a father's primary role is financial rather than emotional. Without strong support systems, from employers to parenting communities, many dads struggle to feel included and confident in their role, missing out on key bonding opportunities that are so important for both them and their children. This week I am joined by Alex Lloyd Hunter a UK-based advocate for improved paternity leave and co-founder of The Dad Shift, an organisation dedicated to campaigning for better paternity leave policies in the UK. After becoming a dad, he recognised the significant barriers that limited fathers' involvement in bonding with and caring for their family. The UK's statutory paternity leave offers just two weeks at a rate of £184 per week, one of the least supportive in Europe. What every parent should know about vaccines for their child. With Lisa Broome As a parent, one of your primary wishes is to keep your child well and healthy, its inbuilt in us as parents to try and achieve this and protect our little ones. That's perhaps why 57% of parents surveyed by One Poll for the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said having a sick child is the most stressful aspect of family life, significantly higher than stressors like welcoming a new baby into the family (15%). The poll also found that nearly half of parents surveyed (49%) reported having to miss work due to their child being ill. For many, this disruption is also a frequent occurrence. Over 1 in 5 parents (23%) surveyed state their child is unwell once every few months whilst 12% experience their child being ill multiple times in a month. Most common coughs or colds can be mild and difficult to avoid. But more serious infections that can cause serious illness, hospitalisation and lifelong disabilities are rising too, and it's a good time to be thinking about how we protect babies and young children from these diseases with vaccination. Health officials from the UK Health Security Agency are urging parents to check their children's vaccinations are up to date, amid fears of a ‘back to school surge' of diseases like measles and whooping cough due to falling vaccine uptake rates. To give your child the best protection from these illnesses, it's important that their vaccines are up to date. Vaccines prevent over 5,000 deaths and over 100,000 hospital admissions each year in England, if your child isn't vaccinated, they're not protected. But there is a lot of misinformation and a lack of knowledge for parents around vaccinations. This week I am joined by a vaccination guru and registered nurse, Lisa Broome. Lisa has joined us to answer some of the most common questions and concerns parents have around vaccinations and the advice/tips she gives to help them navigate child immunisations and sometimes the fear of the unknown for some parents. Why we should adapt exercise for pregnancy with James Davies For those who have been following me on social media it will come as no surprise that I am a huge advocate of exercise during pregnancy. The benefits are huge, and it is an area I am super passionate about. But of course, we want to ensure exercise in pregnancy is done safely to support our bodies. With this in mind you can be forgiven for ending up in a rabbit warren of frantic googling when it comes to exercise in pregnancy and finding a confusing tangle of poor quality, outdated, inaccurate information. Unhelpful to say the least but also super disempowering at a time when accurate information is imperative. I am really excited to put your questions to this weeks podcast guest and dispel some of the myths and misconceptions around exercising during pregnancy and explore the best way to navigate this precious time. I am joined by James Davies, this man has an extensive portfolio from a career in professional support himself, to working with elite athletes in the worlds of premier league football, the commonwealth, and Olympic games. More recently James has begun to focus on the historically neglected area of women in sport, qualified in pregnancy training and shares my relentless passion for empowering women to embrace healthy, active pregnancies safely. And on a personal note, James has been the voice and expertise behind my own pregnancy journey allowing me to enjoy physical activity throughout and genuinely have the positive, healthy pregnancy I dreamt of. Google anything to do with labour and you will likely hear the term ‘Hypnobirthing'. But it is not about chanting with charms and crystals, in fact that is a huge misconception! At its core, Hypnobirthing aims to help a woman deal with any fear or anxiety around birth and aims to equip you with methods to help you stay calm, relaxed and in control. On this week's episode I am delighted to be joined by Abby @abby_loveyourbirth , an experienced Hypnobirthing teacher and teacher trainer. Abby and I talk about how the practices of hypnobirthing compliment your body's physiology in labour. By enabling your body and mind to be relaxed, birth can be less painful, quicker and a very positive experience. Abby is based in West Yorkshire, with many years' experience teaching hypnobirthing to expectant parents and also training and mentoring others to become hypnobirthing teachers she is the perfect guest for this weeks podcast chat. Abby helps parents to feel calm and confident about birth, equipping them with the tools to have a positive birth experience however this may happen for them. Abby really does practice what she preaches having given birth to her 4 children all through which she embraced hypnobirthing techniques. Abby mirrors my ethos that all women should approach their birth free from fear and I hope this chat helps you to embark on your positive birth journey.
