Cory Combs has a research and development background in advanced aircraft design, electric vehicles and clean energy programs—a unique set of career experiences that inspired him to co-found Ampaire and make electric aircraft practical, efficient and a central part of our transportation system. Prior to Ampaire, as an R&D engineer with a cleantech startup, he managed research programs with international partners studying technologies for pollution reduction and energy efficiency. At Northrop Grumman's advanced aircraft programs unit, Cory was an R&D engineer on multiple X-planes intended to test novel concepts. In one case, he was part of a small team that took a revolutionary full-scale aircraft from concept study to flight testing in two years. He also served as principal investigator on a multi-year research project leading a team of engineers and subcontractors.Cory graduated from Stanford University with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering, both accomplished within a four-year period (and with little sleep, Cory notes). He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. In 2019, Cory was named a Dial Fellow by philanthropic organization Emerson Collective, joining an elite group of entrepreneurs, environmentalists, educators and social activists. Dial fellows receive support, networking and other opportunities to spark broader awareness for their work. The Dial Fellows program cited Cory for his pioneering efforts to jump-start the electric aviation market with innovative hybrid electric concepts.Connect with Cory on Twitter and LinkedIn.
Kevin Noertker has contributed engineering expertise to stealth aircraft and satellitedevelopment programs and contributed to our understanding of the universe as aresearch fellow at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. An entrepreneur at heart, Kevin isdriven to apply the science and engineering disciplines of large aerospaceorganizations to pressing environmental problems. He views the U.S.'s robust startupculture as an opportunity to direct technological innovation toward people andcommunities, gaining quick feedback and making rapid progress. Prior to foundingAmpaire with Cory Combs, he served as a senior systems engineer at NorthropGrumman Electronic Systems working on satellite programs. Among otheraccomplishments, he led a team that developed a hardware fix for a key componenton the Joint Polar Satellite System, improving NOAA's hurricane projections from threedays to 5-7 days, as well as the supply of other crucial weather data. Earlier, he wasan engineer at Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems developing low-observable(stealth) technology. He has two patents from this period. As an undergraduateresearch fellow at JPL, he investigated requirements for a unique robot capable ofcollecting rock samples in challenging terrain on Mars, Titan, and the Moon. He alsoanalyzed data from the Infrared Spitzer Space Telescope to chart star formation overthe last seven billion years. Kevin graduated with honors from Caltech with a major inMechanical Engineering and a minor in History He is a Director of the Caltech AlumniAssociation.
If you're a frequent flier, you're also a major polluter. What if there was a way to travel the world with less impact on the environment? In this quick, exciting talk, aviation entrepreneur and TED Fellow Cory Combs lays out how electric aircraft could make flying cleaner, quieter and more affordable -- and shares his work on Electric EEL, the largest hybrid-electric plane ever to fly.

"I’ve just seen real ingenuity and perseverance, and also because of this, it’s connected to community in a much different way. That sense that all boats rise has really come through for this, I’d say” - Cory CombsIn this episode our featured voice is Executive Director of InterMusic SF Cory Combs. We wanted to host InterMusicSF because they are another one of our long time performing arts organizations that is focused on the incubation and support of our music groups.InterMusicSF is also participating in the Theater Bay Area’s Performing arts worker relief fund to help raise funds to support musical artists just like Dancers’s Group for dancers and ZSPACE for performing artists
