It's a challenge to describe bassist John Patitucci. He's a 2025 Jazz Journalists Association Award winner for Electric Bassist of the Year, and four-time Grammy Award winning artist, one of today's elite bassists, not just jazz but in all of music, but that's too limiting. John is a bassist with not only excellent rhythm but a complex, angular rhythmic style with dynamic and warm tones and a style that moves people emotionally as well as physically. No, that's too inadequate. John describes himself as, “a man of faith.” But when I step back, I realize all the above pretty much sums it up. A Brooklyn, New York native, John Patitucci's musical history is, in his words, a “Cinderella story.” At 25 years old, he was suddenly whisked away by iconic jazz pianist Chick Corea to join his new band, the Chick Corea Elektric Band and later the Akoustic Band where he played a large role in developing the sound of jazz fusion of the 1980s and 90s. It was Chick Corea who facilitated Patitucci's connection with GRP Records to make his first recordings and then tour the world, quickly becoming a global jazz figure. The story continues in 1986 when he was invited by saxophonist legend Maestro Wayne Shorter to contribute to his Columbia Records project Phantom Navigator. This led to Patitucci joining Wayne Shorter's 20-year four-time Grammy Award winning quartet, along with his good friends, pianist Danilo Perez and drummer Brian Blade. For John, this was the ultimate life. While Chick's band set John on a forward trajectory, it was in Wayne Shorter's band that he grew spiritually as well as technically. “The things that happened on stage are spiritual experiences for me. It's been transformative.” It's this spiritual development that is the pinnacle component of our conversation. John's “faith” plays a large role in his music, his stage presence, and his relationships with key band members including saxophone giant Chris Potter and legendary drummer Brian Blade. His fondness for pianist Danilo Perez continues from their brotherhood in the Wayne Shorter Quartet. This conversation occurs just as John, Danilo Perez, and Brian Blade returned with iconic saxophonist Ravi Coltrane on the three-week Wayne Shorter Legacy Tour in Europe. We open the episode recounting the tour and the importance faith played in it. We spent time delving into his recent recording, Spirit Fall, laughing and enjoying ourselves describing the compositions that impressed us the most. The creation and emotional depth of Spirit Fall, recorded without rehearsals, is a focal point of the conversation, illustrating the trio's deep connection and improvisational synergy that's felt throughout the album. This date newly issued on the Cellar/Live label is by drummer Carl Allen leading a bare bones trio with the incredible tenor and soprano saxophonist Chris Potter, who also is heard on bass clarinet. The equally accomplished Christian McBride on bass plus a cameo appearance on piano by Vancouver's John Lee. The repertoire is varied with compositions by Carl Allen, drummer Lenny White, Freddie Hubbard, ,pianist James Williams and Charlie Parker. Charles Ruggiero has been active since the early 90s, cutting his teeth on the New York jazz scene and landing his first big gig with Chuck Mangione. His New York cohort included such future giants as Joshua Redman, Peter Bernstein, Jane Monheit, Brad Mehldau, and Chris Potter, to name a few. In addition to his jazz exlpoits, Charles found a home on the metal scene as a member of Slunt, and replacing Matt Sorum in the supergroup Circus Diablo. He relocated to LA in 2007 and didn't miss a step, performing with Larry Goldings, Eric Reed, Bob Sheppard, Bob Reynolds, David Ryan Harris, and many others. He has released multiple albums as a leader and performed as sideman on countless others, and also records for Loop Loft. In this episode, Charles talks about: Playing double drums with Gadd as the intro to his first big gig with Chuck Mangione Trying to serve the music through his artistry What a drummer timekeeping responsibility actually is His perspective on New York and LA, having spent big chunks of his career in both places His various side hustles, including teaching, mixing/producing, and creating album art Trusting his creativity and artistic identity after getting sober

X-Men '97 is an American animated television series created by Beau DeMayo for the streaming service Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team the X-Men. It is a revival of X-Men: The Animated Series (1992–1997), continuing the story of the X-Men who face new challenges following the loss of their leader, Professor X. X-Men '97 is produced by Marvel Studios, via its Marvel Animation label, with DeMayo as head writer for the first two seasons and Jake Castorena as supervising director. Ray Chase, Jennifer Hale, Alison Sealy-Smith, Cal Dodd, J. P. Karliak, Lenore Zann, George Buza, A. J. LoCascio, Holly Chou, Isaac Robinson-Smith, Matthew Waterson, Ross Marquand, and Adrian Hough star as members of the X-Men. Sealy-Smith, Dodd, Zann, Buza, and Hough reprised their roles from the original series, as did Christopher Britton. Original series stars Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Alyson Court, Lawrence Bayne, and Ron Rubin returned to voice new characters. The revival was first discussed in June 2019 and formally announced in November 2021, with DeMayo and Castorena attached. Chase Conley and Emi Yonemura also directed episodes. DeMayo was fired as head writer in March 2024 after completing work on the first two seasons. The series is the first X-Men project from Marvel Studios since the company regained the film and television rights to the characters. Animation was provided by Studio Mir and Tiger Animation, and is a modernized version of the original series' style. X-Men '97 premiered on March 20, 2024, with its first two episodes. The rest of the ten-episode first season was released weekly until May 15. A second season is in production and a third is in development.
