But one national court reporting conglomerate has just instructed its reporters to begin videotaping remote depositions as a matter of course, purportedly as "backup media." But given the absence of regulation regarding reporter backup recordings, what should you do to protect your deponents against the use, misuse or even sale of backup video recordings? This episode of the All Things Judicial podcast focuses on the Judicial Branch's court reporters, who make verbatim records of court proceedings and prepare transcripts from those records for purposes such as appeals.Guests are David Jester, Court Reporting Manager, and Susan Burgess, Court Reporting Coordinator. They discuss the importance of their role in the justice system and larger community, the advanced technology they employ, and their personal experiences in the court reporting profession. This episode was released in recognition of National Court Reporting and Captioning Week, which is celebrated this year during the week of February 5–12. "Court reporters have an integral role," said Jester. "When I finish a transcript and send it to the Court of Appeals, I know that I am the only one who has a role in the trial court and the appellate process. I know everything that was said and I can communicate it to the Court of Appeals so they can give the case a meaningful review."

Only 5% of Court Reporters who start Court Reporting school get a degree. That's because learning how to type on a 22 key stenograph machine is like learning a foreign language. 70% of Court Reporters are self-employed freelancers and the work is grueling. Today's guest, Lauren Lawrence, founded Stenovate, a company that created a content management system for Court Reporters than can reduce their work load as much as 50%. It's a brilliant idea that's taking off. The market is huge with 30,000 court reporters in the US plus more abroad.

A mutual friend in the tech start-up community here in Tampa introduced me to Tom a few months back and we struck up a conversation about intellectual property, entrepreneurship, even marathons and Tough Mudders. I knew Tom had to share his story with my listeners. Today’s topic was “Technology in the Legal Field“, but during course of the interview, Tom mentioned that entrepreneurs must adopt the mindset of ‘comfort in chaos’, and I liked that phrase because it really applies to so many areas of the legal industry. The wheels of justice grind slowly, but it’s a chaotic grind upon which many of us thrive. True story. Entrepreneurship is very similar in the respect that it, too, is a slow, chaotic grind, and it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. So that’s what I explored during this episode with Tom, how he transitioned from a tech entrepreneur to an attorney.
