On the show today are Norma Listman and Saqib Keval, looking at the solutions and communities that can be built when activism and ethical values are at the forefront of food creation. Norma and Saqib are the chefs and restauranteurs behind Masala y Maíz, which TIME Magazine named as one of the top destinations to visit worldwide, and its slightly more casual Indian-Mexican sister restaurant, Mari Gold. Norma and Saqib were also just featured in the most recent season of Chef's Table on Netflix. Masala y Maíz seamlessly blends Indian, East African, and Mexican flavours inspired by the cultures of the husband-wife team. In addition to being renowned globally for its genre-bending and deeply personal cuisine, Masala y Maíz champions a movement of social justice through food, prioritizing quality of life for their staff and farmers and serving as a testament to the idea that a values-based workplace can also be a thriving workplace. In today's conversation, Norma and Saqib share how they moved the idea of Masala y Maíz from a research concept into a full restaurant, even after not being so sure about staying in the industry for all its shortcomings), how experiences with local flavours on a menu can fuck with your brain and decolonize how you think about ingredients, and the importance of corn in cultural, social, and decolonial approaches to food. Tribe-Class Linkages: The History and Politics of the Agrarian Movement in Tripura (Routledge, 2023) is a historical study of the development of agrarian class relations among the tribal population in Tripura. Tracing the evolution of Tripura and its agrarian relations from monarchy in the nineteenth century to democracy in the twentieth century, the book discusses the nature of the erstwhile princely state of Tripura, analyses the emergence of differentiation within tribes, and documents the emergence of the tribal movement in the state. It specifically focuses on the tribal movement led by the Ganamukti Parishad, beginning with the historic revolt of 1948-51 against state repression of the tribal people, followed by the mass movements in the 1950s and 1960s, which were founded on a recognition of class relations and the slogan of unity across the tribal and non-tribal (Bengali) peasantry. The first of its kind, the book will be indispensable for students and researchers of tribal studies, agrarian studies, exclusion studies, tribe-class relationships, minority studies, sociology, development studies, history, political science, north-east India studies, and South Asian studies. It will also be useful for activists and policymakers working in the area. Rituparna Patgiri has a PhD in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. Download: atish.lnk.to/texaseclipse I had the peaktime midnight slot with the honor of playing after Lee Burridge, so I started this one off with an organic vibe then transitioned through prog, tech-house, and just some straight up bangers. A few unreleased ID's in there from my boys Enamour , m.o.n.r.o.e and Saqib. Also funny moment: you may notice that the set just abruptly ends. That's because the next act accidentally unplugged the wrong cable from the mixer. Was definitely a nerve-wracking moment….BUT my recorder also recorded the crowd noise, so it's kinda a cool little audio capture of what it felt like...and you can literally hear the next DJ say "OH SHIT!!" ....The warm applause from all of you certainly softened the blow :) Tracklist: 098 - Live at Texas Eclipse [0:00:00] atish, Fabian Krooss - Elasticity [A Tribe Called Kotori 2024] [0:05:00] Sarkis Mikael, Nhii - Plant Power [Sounds of Khemit 2024] [0:09:00] Enamour - ID [0:13:00] Jamie Stevens & Ivan Aliaga - Firefox [Solis Records 2024] [0:17:00] Sasha - Fleuron Drift [Last Night on Earth 2024] [0:24:00] Martin Eyerer - Walk the talk [Still Hot 2024] [0:28:00] Ellroy - Safe Landing [Modelika 2024] [0:32:00] Denney - Trojan Dance [Last Night On Earth 2024] [0:36:00] Cristina Lazic - Luna [La Zic 2024] [0:40:00] m.O.N.R.O.E. - ID [0:46:00] Asher - Shifty [Aus Music 2022] [0:50:00] Deetron - Runnin [Nu Groove Records 2024] [0:54:00] John Tejada - Sweat (On The Walls) [Poker Flat RecordingsPoker Flat Recordings 2004] [0:58:00] Francesca Lombardo - Sea [Ovum Recordings 2022] [1:04:00] Saqib - ID [1:08:00] Catz 'n Dogz - ASA [Pets Recordings 2023] [1:13:00] Tom Demac - Sink Or Swim [Hypercolour 2017] [1:17:00] Polo (AR) - Nostalgia del Presente (Danny Howells Remix) [Manjumasi Unreleased] [1:23:00] Jim Rivers - Cosmos [COD3 QR 2023] Sign up for my mailer: bit.ly/atishmusic - connect -

From the opening track of this mix, you know you're in for a ride. 'Dance Dance' is an edit of an old Bollywood classic SAQIB made with Haider Uppal. Its the lush groove sets the tone for a 90-minute dance of deep-fried disco that flirts with main room prog in the most analogue way.

Hailing from Pakistan, the now Brooklyn-based DJ is an ardent student of music, an arc that includes playing heavy metal bands in Lahore on the way to studying electronic music production in New York (Rutgers University, Point Blank Music).

Today, he's signed to labels including Flying Circus and Sol Selectas alongside DJ bookings at Electric Zoo, Cityfox and The Brooklyn Mirage. Upcoming shows include supporting BLOND:ISH at Industry City in NY, which follows his recent Nino Torres remix on his own Beat in Time imprint. All signs, of course, that arc is still rising. Featuring tracks from Maceo Plex, Nick Curly, Piemont, Rigopolar, and more, this is a lively adventure into SAQIB's splendid yet slightly psychedelic world. @saqibmalik

When it comes to emerging technology, there's no hotter topic than artificial intelligence. Programs like ChatGPT and Midjourney are becoming more popular and are inspiring people to explore the possibilities of what AI can achieve — including when it comes to accessible technology for people who are blind or visually impaired. One of those people is Saqib Shaikh, an engineering manager at Microsoft. Saqib leads the team that developed an app called Seeing AI, which utilizes the latest generation of artificial intelligence, known as generative AI Dr. Cal spoke with Saqib about how Generative AI works, his firsthand experience using an app like Seeing AI, and how it helped improve his daily life. This episode also features Alice Massa, an occupational therapist at Lighthouse Guild. Alice described the many benefits of generative AI, and how it helps her clients better engage in their world. Saqib and Alice also both agreed that the current state of AI is only the beginning of its potential. They shared their visions of what it could achieve in the future — and it doesn't seem that far off.   The Big Takeaways: The Power of Generative AI: Saqib discussed the present condition of artificial intelligence and why generative AI is a massive leap from what came before it. With a deep data pool to draw from, generative AI can do so much more than identify items or come up with an essay prompt. It can understand and interpret the world with startling depth and expediency. Seeing AI: This app can truly put the world in the palm of your hand. It can perform essential tasks like reading a prescription or the sign at a bus stop — and even more than that! It can describe all the colorful details of sea life in a fish tank at the aquarium or help you order dinner off a menu. The app doesn't just provide people who are blind or visually impaired greater access to the world — it expands it. Embrace Change: There's understandably a lot of uncertainty about what role AI should play in society. However, Saqib Shaikh and Alice Massa insist that there's nothing to fear from AI, that the benefits far outweigh any potential drawbacks, and that as long as it's handled responsibly, there's a lot AI can do to help improve our lives.   Tweetables: “I had a client at the Lighthouse who really was very disinterested in doing anything. The only thing he did on his phone was answer a call from his pastor and call his pastor. And I was able to put Seeing AI on his phone. And his wife said the first time in two years, she saw a smile on his face because now he could read his Bible by himself.” — Alice Massa, Occupational Therapist at Lighthouse Guild “What if AI could understand you as a human? What are your capabilities? What are your limitations at any moment in time? Whether that's due to a disability or your preferences or something else, and understand the environment, the world you're in, or the task you're doing on the computer or whatever. And then we can use the AI to close that gap and enable everyone to do more and realize their full potential.” — Saqib Shaikh, Engineering Manager at Microsoft “I call my phone my sister because my phone is the person I go to when I'm on the street if I'm walking in Manhattan. The other day I was meeting someone on 47th Street. I wasn't sure which block I was on. All I did was open Seeing AI short text, hold it up to the street sign, and it told me I was on West 46th Street.” — Alice Massa “Some of the interesting things powered by generative AI is going from taking a photo, say from your photo gallery if you're reliving memories from your vacation, or even just what's in front of you right now. It can go from saying it's a man sitting on a chair in a room to actually giving you maybe a whole paragraph describing what's in the room, what's on the shelf, what's In the background, what's through the window, even. And it's just remarkable. I work on this every day. I understand the technology, yet as an end user, I still am surprised and delighted by what this generation of AI is capable of telling me.” — Saqib Shaikh   Contact Us: Contact us at podcasts@lighthouseguild.org with your innovative new technology ideas for people with vision loss.   Pertinent Links: Lighthouse Guild Together, Tacit Retissa Neoviewer State Tactile Omero Museum Emily Metauten Artist Page (Herminia Blue)
