Building The Business Of Service - Ashli Johnson - Defining Hospitality - Episode # 162

Our guest this week is someone who is committed to elevating communities and creating wealth through hospitality ownership and leadership. Please welcome to the show, Founder of Hospitality Hued, Ashli Johnson!Ashli sits down with Host Dan Ryan to discuss the ways the hospitality industry can be more accommodating of Black and Brown professionals. Ashli shares her motivations for founding Hospitality Hued, the importance of early professional development, and how to instill a sense of ownership in employees.Takeaways: While hospitality is ultimately a business of service, it is rapidly evolving to better address DEI issues across employment, supplier diversity, and leadership. To remain impactful, those in the industry must actively engage in these conversations.Conferences and networking are a crucial part of success in the hospitality industry, yet many Black and Brown leaders find themselves “under conferenced”. To combat this, HUED was created to lower barriers to these opportunities for Black and Brown leaders.Leverage alumni networks to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical career development. Don't overlook the importance of having a strategic approach when pursuing career goals to avoid potential disadvantages and seize growth opportunities. To motivate teams to think like owners, consider actually giving them ownership stakes, as it fundamentally changes their understanding and investment in the business. Implementing an equity share model can drive engagement from general managers. In hospitality, it's crucial to understand how positive guest experiences impact the business's overall success and competitive position. Recognizing the connection between guest satisfaction and business metrics such as rates, market competition, and capital expenditures is essential for professional growth and effective management.Aspiring hotel or restaurant owners should carefully consider their financial and personal responsibilities before pursuing ownership. Instead of direct ownership, roles such as investor or franchisee have lower capital requirements and barriers to entry.Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who want to master the business, and ensure that your leadership is aware of your interests to help you move towards your desired career path.Quote of the Show:“Your fortune is found in the follow up.” - Ashli JohnsonLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/itsashlijohnson/ Website: https://www.hospitalityhued.com/ Shout Outs:2:12 - HD Vegas: https://hdexpo.hospitalitydesign.com/ 2:47 - Howard University: https://howard.edu/ 2:50 - Marriott-Sorenson Center for Hospitality Leadership: https://business.howard.edu/hospitality-leadership 44:52 - John Fareed: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnfareed/ 45:06 - From Invisible to Icon: How to Become a Known Expert in Your Industry: https://a.co/d/03AZNsoL 45:41 - Julien Saunders: https://www.linkedin.com/in/juliensaunders/ 45:42 - Kiersten Saunders45:47 - Rich and Regular: https://richandregular.com/ 46:36 - Thomas Penny III: https://www.linkedin.com/in/thomas-penny-iii-1aa40915/ 46:42 - Damon Lawrence: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hauspitality/overlay/about-this-profile/ 46:45 - Jason Bass: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jasoncbass/ 47:01 - ILC: https://ilcongress.com/ 47:15 - Kendra Plummer: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kendraplummer/ 47:37 - Bashar Wali: https://www.linkedin.com/in/basharwali/ 47:56 - Lauren A. Today's guest is committed to elevating communities and creating wealth through hospitality ownership and leadership. She is a recent recipient of the FIU Alumni Award, and a hospitality sharpshooter. Please welcome to the show, Ashli Johnson! Ashli is the Executive Director of the Marriott Sorenson Center for Hospitality Leadership at Howard University. Ashli joins the host Dan Ryan to talk about how Howard University is shaking up the hospitality industry and working on getting more diversity in the c-suite level in hospitality.   Takeaways:  Hospitality can be viewed through two different parts that combine to make up the whole picture. The first part is the business of service and the second part is the heart and delivery of service.  At Howard University, hospitality isn't a major but the Marriott Sorenson Center allows students to explore what it takes to be a leader in the hospitality industry and create more diversity in the c-suite level of this industry. The three main areas that Howard University wants to focus on is that they want their students to learn, understand and impact the hospitality, investment, real estate, and tech and innovation industries.  As a society, we have to recognize our own personal bias and really focus on the talent that is fit to lead. We need to stop looking at who we are connected with and rather focus on the merits and what people bring to the table. When you are working for an organization, there is a layer of sponsorship that helps you to become aware of positions that are opening up in the company. Having someone work on your behalf to talk about you positively is always a good thing to have. Having someone be your sponsor doesn't have to be a formal position. It can be something as simple as offering some help to a younger person who is looking to grow within the company. Growing up with a father who was a Marine Corps Officer, Ashli traveled often and found her passion for hospitality when she was the one in charge of deciding which hotels they would stay at on road trips, or places they would eat, or houses they would move to.   Quote of the Show: 2:05 Hospitality to me is two parts. Hospitality is most certainly the business of service and it's also the heart and the delivery of service.”   Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/itsashlijohnson/ Website: https://howard.edu/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/itsashlijohnson/?hl=en   Shout Outs: 1:11 Damon Lawrence  1:13 Homage Hospitality 1:38 Arne Sorenson 8:26 Independent Lodging Conference 26:15 Lowe's 29:20 Ray Bennett Ways to Tune In:  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419 Podbean: https://www.defininghospitality.live/ YouTube : https://youtu.be/VkdBkKhSsWQ

Hospitality is a Feeling - Damon Lawrence - Episode # 024

Defining Hospitality Podcast

The hospitality industry is incredibly diverse as a whole, but not when it comes to the higher up positions. That's what today's guest wants to change for the better. Damon Lawrence, the Co-Founder of Homage Hospitality, is working with Howard University to create an outstanding hospitality program at his alma mater, Howard University.  Listen to this week's episode as he shares #hospitality insights with Dan Ryan today! Takeaways:  There is a labor shortage in the hospitality industry because it's not an employee centric industry. Employees work long hours and went from seeing no one in a pandemic to being face to face with guests again. Hospitality is a feeling you give to your guests. Whether they are in your hotel, restaurant or even your home, it is all about how you treat the guests and put them in a position to succeed. It's important to have conversations regarding race in the country. To make a positive change in the world, it starts with what might be an uncomfortable conversation for most.  There needs to be more African American hotel owners and developers. To help achieve this, Damon is working on building up the hospitality program at Howard University. The hospitality industry is very diverse as a whole, but most of the diversity is sitting at the very bottom. The low entry, hourly jobs are the most diverse, and the further you go up the more the diversity dwindles. If people listen, take notice, and then take action that could cure a lot of ills in the hospitality industry. This could also benefit society at large.  Quote of the Show:   7:58 “Hospitality really is a feeling. What I've always noticed, whether it's traveling or I'll be working in this space, is how do you make somebody feel when they enter into your space or a space that you have dominion over? Just because you are a hospitality brand doesn't mean that you wouldn't exude or create a hospitable experience. So hospitality really is how you make people feel. Whether they're dining at your restaurant or dining at your home. Like I said before, understanding what everyone goes through and making sure that you can put people in the best position to succeed, creates that hospitality experience that you want to provide to your consumers.”  Links:  Damon's Profile:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/hauspitality/ Company website: https://www.anewkindofhospitality.com Twitter: @hauspitality Shout Outs:  1:11 Thompson Hotel 1:34 Jason Pomerantz 1:35 Stephen Brandman 1:57 St. Regis 1:59 Ritz Carlton 2:00 Four Seasons 3:33 Craigslist 10:33 Howard University 10:49 University of Louisiana, Lafayette 11:33 Mardi Gras 12:20 Halle Berry 12:22 Paula Patton 19:27 Independent Lodging Congress 20:14 Arne Sorenson foundation 20:17 Marriott foundation 23:28 ALIS Conference 25:21 Determine by Design 25: 24 Kia Weatherspoon 36:00 LGBTQ 51:39 HDAC (Hospitality Diversity Action Council) 52:58 Bashar Wali 53:00 Nina Grondin 53:03 Aaron Anderson 53:07 Stacy Shoemaker Ways to Tune In:  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Podbean:  https://www.defininghospitality.live/ Youtube : https://youtu.be/k_ETfrerldA

It is one of where  the content of one’s character is evident. Originally from Pasadena, CA, Damon has always had a passion for entrepreneurship. In high school Damon was voted most likely to become a CEO and his classmates proved to be prophetic as the currently helms as Chief Executive Officer of Homage Hospitality.Like many hoteliers, he grew to love hospitality as he rose through the ranks. Damon began his hospitality journey as a front desk agent at the Donovan House Hotel in Washington, DC while attending Howard University. He then moved into management at companies such as The Ritz-Carlton, InterContinental Hotels Group, and Dusit International. After noticing a lack of African American brand ownership and leadership in higher management ranks, Damon created the Homage Hospitality brand in 2014 and currently oversees operations and creative direction. In July of 2018 Homage Hospitality opened their first property “The Moor” in New Orleans, LA. The small property stands out with an emphasis on the culture of New Orleans and its relation to multicultural heritage of the North African Moors in its design and architecture. The nearly 100-year-old facade sports Spanish Colonial features, while inside, the four suites have rustic elements of exposed brick and hardwood floors softened with Moroccan patterned textiles. Damon Lawrence's dream is impassioned, authentic and genuinely focused on providing a hotel experience that is geared towards creating like something you’ve never seen before. It will feel like a new kind of experience - a new kind of hospitality. In a recent Zoom conference hosted by the African American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, hospitality entrepreneur Kristin Kitchen talked about her lodging company that showcases Black heritage and supports minority-owned companies. Kitchen is part of a trend toward building hospitality ventures related to Black history and culture, a sub-sector of the $200 billion global Heritage Tourism movement, which also ranks as the fastest-growing travel trend in America. As with most hospitality ventures, Kitchen and her company, Sojourn Heritage Accommodations, are struggling to do business amid the coronavirus pandemic, but the effort to increase the number of Black-owned hotels continues, albeit at a reduced pace. During the business lull, two entrepreneurs new to the scene are developing fresh concepts that celebrate Black culture and cater to the next generation of travelers. In this episode of Lodging Leaders we feature Damon Lawrence, founder of Homage Hospitality Group in Oakland, California, and Robin Staten, founder of Tiny Urban Escapes in Indianapolis, Indiana. They share their visions for independent boutique accommodations and how they're preparing to capitalize on pent-up demand during and after the coronavirus crisis.
