#046 - Today we are talking to Lori Watkins, the Founder and CEO of The Lord's Helper Boutique. Lori did not grow up a religious person - she found it as an adult. Impressed with her fellow worshipers' fashion, Lori researched how she could secure similar garments for herself. She was shocked when she learned the price. After discovering how much worshipers were being overcharged, she decided to do something about it - she became the curator of stylish church fashion at a reasonable price.“And I was really disappointed at what the cost of clothing really is and how consumers, especially in the Black community, well, I'm not gonna just say the Black community, but the urban areas in Oakland and surrounding areas - how we don't get none of the savings. So my thought was, I hate to see people going to worship and spending all this money on things they don't have to and they are just going to worship. So I said, hmm…. this just didn't feel right.”She started an annual fashion show, Dressing to Worship the King, and hundreds flocked to it. She got support from local musical artists, pastors and sponsorships from local businesses. Then the pandemic hit and the immediate shutdown to in-person events crushed her business."Unfortunately, when the pandemic hit, that was the biggest setback ever. I didn't get one sale, everything shut down. So did my business. We shut down in 2020 and I think that was the biggest scare for everyone. I remember I was fearful myself - 2020 went by, but then 21 came and there were no more conventions to go to."Lori was able to get a deal to bring her first fashion show back in ‘21 - outdoors at Preservation Park. She is so grateful to all the support she receives from volunteer help and customers. She is especially grateful to the Oakland African American Chamber of Commerce.“one of the things the African American Chamber of Commerce does is they connect you and networking with groups that help you. That's amazing in itself. That you can connect with sources that will help your business, that will guide you to the next right thing.”Be Sure to listen until the end to hear Lori talk about how she assembled her team.

This is a podcast episode that wasn't a comfortable discussion for me to have - but it needs to be shared. We cover some topics on race, diversity, and the concept of allyship. Some of the topics covered include:I KNOW I don’t have a deep enough appreciation for the systemic racism in America, and I certainly have no idea what it feels like to be on the other side of the issue. I grew up in a small white down, went to a small college. I didn’t really know what racism was or looked like until I started working in downtown Pittsburgh. This year has been especially troubling for me - to see numerous events that are simply appalling. The discussions that black families have to have with their kids growing up about how to interact with police and racism in general is something I’ll never know. So when we started having a discussion in the DM’s of Instagram, I thought Alaina would be a great person to bring a little more of this out in the open. The first question is about this concept of allyship. How can we as a community start embracing this concept? So, as a middle aged white guy, with mostly white friends and largely a white audience, what are some steps I can take to help make progress in racial equality? This is the topic that convinced me we needed to have this discussion. When I was putting together the Summit, I had a very high percentage of people of color that I asked to participate turn me down. At one point, I sort of felt the most racist I ever have in my life, because I was focused on “If it’s not a POC, I can't ask them” - because I had virtually no white folks turn me down, but about 75% of POC said no. Alaina has some great insights on this…Now, the closest I’ve probably been to feeling extremely different or singled out was at a church choir festival. Out of numerous choirs, we were the only white choir Thankfully we went first, because the spiritual gospel music that followed was absolutely incredible. Afterwards, people commented it was nice to have a little of “our kind of music” at the festival. But that was a very kind way of being singled out, and it doesn't come close to racism. How can we make strides on overcoming the trust gap?I was recently asked to join the African American Chamber of Commerce, which I plan on doing. I think it’s a great way to start building collaborative partnerships across our visible differences - because ultimately, as entrepreneurs we all just trying to serve our clients and make the world a better place. What other types of professional or community organization do you think might be good ways for people of all colors to collaborate?Follow Alaina on Instagram: @budbizcreativ, @alainapowerchick Twitter: @alainapwrchk

As with most hospitality ventures, Kitchen and her company, Sojourn Heritage Accommodations, are struggling to do business amid the coronavirus pandemic, but the effort to increase the number of Black-owned hotels continues, albeit at a reduced pace. During the business lull, two entrepreneurs new to the scene are developing fresh concepts that celebrate Black culture and cater to the next generation of travelers. Show Highlights: Why was it necessary to start the African American Chamber of Commerce New Jersey and why is it so important for this Chamber and other identity-group specific Chambers to not only exist, but also thrive? 2:35 John In New Jersey, there's 140 chambers of commerce and the US Chamber of Commerce which is based in Washington, DC, the largest business Federation in the country has about 7000 members 7000 chamber members across the country. In addition to a multitude of major corporations and I realized that there has to be some significance there. What is COVID-19 stopping you from doing or working on that you would have been working on? 7:34 John We have had a number of events playing you know, that'd be an advocate for the demographic of people who have innate talent, abilities, willingness and desire to be a part of contributing to the overall competitiveness of the state, and not being able to have those engagements to programs and events that we have also opportunities for these men and women who have real capital at risk. They've put their blood sweat and tears in their business enterprises. What are some other barriers that you think we have to face and some ways to remove some of those other barriers? 15:09 John I gotta get back to your question about where businesses where growth is for businesses or whatever. Right, but the barriers are hindering that, right? So we have a number of very talented engineers in New Jersey. So in the professional service route, as we stay with the government or the public sector, there's a procurement process where you don't really have to go out to bid in the professional services. So that means engineers, architects, your environmentalist, your fund management firms, people who manage money, who do bond underwriting, who do accounting services, and even in New Jersey, there's a certain You can be a seasoned CPA, and you have to have a certain designation, to audit municipal records. And although you're paying tax dollars, they're excluded for my opportunity, because he's in here barriers, juniors are funding our elected officials campaigns, or they're given preference but blacks are voting for them. What does the role of company boards mean ensuring equitable participation and supplier diversity? 20:51 John Well, one guy that I really was more than one but I mentioned John Rogers and Melanie Hobson. I ask your listeners to Google them and see what they're doing around the country. They sit on boards, and they're not spooked by the door when they're on the board. They're they're fighting and championing the value proposition that diversity brings that black men and women could bring to some of these boards to get them more accountable and getting them to understand that I'm supplying diversity and inclusion is not about that mosaic is about really leveraging the talent to get the best value We are a diverse nation, New Jersey is one of the most diverse states in America. And we're not leveraging diversity, for our overall benefit and our competitiveness is the haves and have nots. Who are some leaders who seem to be getting it right? 25:06 John We have people like Kevin Cummings, Domenick A Cama of Investors Bank, who not only is their heart in the right place, but they're people executing former president of Wells Fargo, Brenda Ross Dulan here in New Jersey, phenomenal job. What advice do you have for minorities who want to start a business and it doesn't have to be necessarily in this context of pandemic but just starting in business in general, and then for those who want to move up until leadership ranks in their organization? 31:06 John Well, take the leadership part first, there's a number of things, it's going to enable you to be effective in a leadership role. One, you got to be a good listener. 2 you have to have an understanding of the job that's above you, and understand this below you and definitely have a full understanding of your ability to execute the job at hand. Hit The Bullseye - Amazon: Amazon has been the subject of many Hit the Bullseye segments over the years. The company takes target market segmentation to a new level on an ongoing basis. Whether it's Amazon Prime luring us in for free shipping and other free stuff by actually paying $99 (making it NOT free), or showing us similar products that go with the one we just bought, the online shopper understands marketing and customer data better than most. They drive the marketing industry to new heights on a lot of fronts. Now Amazon's latest idea is to deliver groceries to food stamp recipients. The company is one of 7 online retailers chosen by the US Department of Agriculture to participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, to provide help to 44.2 million needy Americans.Amazon's drill down shows that 80% of food stamp recipients live in or near cities where Amazon has warehouses nearby. The company sees an opportunity in adding deliveries to low-income housing since they are already delivering in the area. The infrastructure, processes and team are already in place so why not make additional deliveries at a low marginal cost? The challenge is serving both the high and low end of the income scales. Think about it. Walmart customers are mostly lower income while Costco's customers are mostly higher income. Can Amazon be the first major online retailer to meet the needs of both on a consistent basis?Amazon said the company is committed to making food accessible through online grocery shopping, offering all customers the lowest prices possible and that their selection and competitive pricing can improve the grocery shopping experience for SNAP participants. We'll see if Amazon can be successful across both ends of the income spectrum. If their track record is any indication, Amazon's move to reach the low income market by delivering groceries to food stamp recipients will be another example of the company hitting the bullseye.Interview with Howard Russell (Part 2)Howard and I started off part two of his interview with a more in depth discussion about mentors. He was quick to note that in order to gain quality mentors you must yourself be a genuine person. To put it blunt Howard said "Cut the BS"! If you are a BS-er men and women of substance will not link their ideals and offer guidance to you. When I asked Howard to give us his Big Idea he talked about a special time he spent time with The Reverend Jesse Jackson during the National Urban League Conference held in Pittsburgh in 2003. After becoming an impromptu tour-guide for the day Mr. Jackson asked Howard "if you died today what would be your legacy?". Howard has held this close to his heart and has worked every day since to be certain he fulfill his legacy.Every Sunday night Howard schedules a weekly board meeting with himself - he states this is his number one tool which has aided in his success. Keeping on track and restructuring his weekly goals helps set himself up for success. He also keeps an excel file that keeps both personal and professional goals which he reviews every week.About Howard RussellHoward Russell is the owner of Custom Nuclear Fabrication.
