After some time with Kimpton Hotels, Clint made the decision to officially make the move out from behind the bar, where he ultimately landed his dream role as the Global Advocacy & Engagement Manager with Sagamore Rye.Sagamore Rye has been around since 2013, where they initially bought their rye from MGP while starting up. Tune in now! Ryan Embree: Welcome to Suite Spot, where hoteliers check in, and we check out what's trending in hotel marketing. I'm your host, Ryan Embree. Hello everyone, and welcome to another episode of The Suite Spot. This is your host, as always, Ryan Embree. Thank you for joining us. We are here in the content creation studio in Maitland, Florida at our Travel Media Group headquarters, and have another fantastic edition of our Suite Spot: Spotlight series. This time with a fantastic property that we're gonna be showcasing and in with me today to talk about this beautiful property is Jennifer Curtin, the general manager of The Beatrice. Jennifer, thank you so much for joining me on the Suite Spot. Jennifer Curtin : Good morning, Ryan. Thank you so much. Really happy to be here. Ryan Embree: Yeah, we're excited to have you. And you know, we're gonna get to The Beatrice and your beautiful property here in a second. But as we do with all of our new guests, this is your first time to the Suite Spot. Talk to us a little bit about your background and hospitality journey that led you to The Beatrice. Jennifer Curtin : Yes, absolutely. Happy to and actually it's, it's quite a full circle story that I have. So my career actually started right here in Providence, Rhode Island. I attended Johnson Wales University, majoring in hotel management, and that's actually located just steps from the Beatrice Hotel. And so this is where I started, I was working in multiple different operations through school. So I worked with Hilton Hotels. I worked in a luxury residential community here in Providence. And then in the summers I used to live on Cape Cod and I worked at an amazing it was a five star resort, Chatham Bars Inn down on the Cape. And so, really for me throughout school, I wanted to get exposure in multiple different operations and environments and really get a sense of what it is that I wanted to choose for a path outside of college. And so for me, it was really that luxury boutique space. That's really where my heart lies. And so upon graduation, I started with Kimpton Hotels first in Boston, Mass, which is home for me. So that was a natural starting point. And then from there I moved with them to Aspen, Colorado and then to Seattle, Washington. And it was when I was in Washington, Seattle that I got the call and moved back to open the Beatrice again, you know, back here in Providence, Rhode Island. Ryan Embree: I'm sure that was such an exciting call to be called back to your hometown where it all started and you went to school for hospitality, which I will tell you of all the hospitality industry experts that we interview on this series in others, it's rare, but I'm seeing more and more of it. I mean, you're talking to another grad of a hospitality management program down here at UCF. More and more people are going to school to get into our industry, which is amazing because most of the time you're gonna hear people say, well, I just fell into the industry, or I was doing a job in college and fell in love with the industry. So it's so great to see and hear stories like yourself, Jennifer, where you knew you had a passion for it, but also finding and having a journey within it and finding a segment and space that you really, that you really cared about. And the fact that you got to do it in your own backyard, I'm sure also benefits you because you know a lot about the local area. Jennifer Curtin : Absolutely. No, it's wonderful. And I will say,

Joining the podcast this week is the force behind some of IHG's most dynamic brands. She's a hospitality veteran who works to create seamless end-to-end guest experiences. Meet Karen Gilbride, Vice President of Avid Hotels, Atwell Suites, and Garner Hotels at IHG. Karen joins Host Dan Ryan to explore IHG's newest brand Garner, and the design philosophy behind it. Additionally, Karen shares the power that mentorship programs can have, the nuances of designing for staff and employees, and how to build a brand. Takeaways: Hospitality is the feeling you get when you visit someone's house and feel welcomed and cared for. Everyday the hospitality industry works to make you feel like you're visiting a close friend when you stop by a hotel. While new construction suits a lot of owners, there is a need to provide owners with a conversion pathway as well. By taking existing properties, owners can update old buildings and save on costWhen designing a hotel room, starting with foam core helps you get an initial feel for the size and shape of the room. Once you have that established, consider where the furniture goes, and how the guests will flow through the room. When building a brand you have two customers to think about. First is the guest who may check in on a given night, the second is the owner. If you can't get an owner to invest in the brand, there won't be a hotel for a guest to check in to. When picking furniture for a hotel, it's important to not only consider the guest, but the hotel staff who have to interact with it as well. If a side table looks nice, but is too heavy to move, it quickly becomes an obstacle to clean around. Any guest experience is about attention to details and understanding what your standards are. If you're only going to do 5 main things, understand what they are, and execute them to perfection.Having a strong foundation of people is crucial for any business, but doubly so in hospitality. Through mentoring programs, new and rising talent can be recognized, and given the resources they need to flourish. Quote of the Show:“I realized that it really is about high attention to detail and standards, being clear about what the standards are, training people against it, and then executing.” - Karen GilbrideLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/karen-gilbride-379b976/ Website: https://www.ihg.com/garner-hotels/hotels/us/en/reservation Website: https://www.ihg.com/hotels/us/en/reservation Shout Outs:6:37 - Intercontinental Park Lane London: https://parklane.intercontinental.com/ 7:20 - Scott Norwood7:28 - New York Giants: https://www.giants.com/ 9:58 - Candlewood Suites: https://www.ihg.com/candlewood/hotels/us/en/reservation 16:48 - Kimpton Hotels: https://www.kimptonhotels.com/31:59 - Cornell: https://www.cornell.edu/ 36:22 - Crowne Plaza: https://www.ihg.com/crowneplaza/hotels/us/en/reservation 37:22 - Fordham University: https://www.fordham.edu/ 57:00 - Holiday Inn: https://www.holidayinn.com/ 1:01:00 - Statler Hotel: https://statlerhotel.cornell.edu/ Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPXApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1sAmazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419

Our guest this week is a highly creative and service oriented design leader who loves learning from others. She's a trailblazer who worked to carve out a space in the industry to truly be herself. Joining the show this week is Managing Principal at KNA Design Los Angeles, Alisa Chodos!Alisa sits down with Dan Ryan for a discussion on her hospitality journey. She dives into the importance of learning from others, why it's ok to make mistakes, and the warmth of the hospitality community. Takeaways:  Hospitality is the business of service, and design is theater. Hospitality is the backdrop through which people create connections and experiences. To properly execute requires a blend of design and management.  In the ever-evolving world of design consulting, learning goes beyond the classroom. It's about gaining firsthand experience, adapting to different environments, and embracing teamwork as the cornerstone of success. While the hospitality industry has come a long way, it has faced many diversity issues. When Alisa first started, not many women were involved in the design process. She continued to push on, and refused to conform. It is important to learn from mistakes, have fun, and collaborate with others to spur creativity. Embracing new perspectives and exploring unconventional ideas can lead to better solutions and promote camaraderie and teamwork. Working with a diverse group of people can provide new perspectives and inspiration. Emphasizing the importance of incorporating cultural and historical references in design projects can lead to cohesive and relevant outcomes. Designers should prioritize maintaining a positive and enthusiastic mindset towards their work to cultivate motivation and creativity. Embracing feelings of exuberance and discovery can lead to increased productivity and job satisfaction. The hospitality industry thrives on strong relationships and collaboration. The support, generosity, and professionalism of its people make it a fortunate and rewarding field to be a part of. Joining the show this week is General Manager at the upcoming Regent Santa Monica Beach, Younes Atallah!Younes sits down with Dan Ryan to discuss his time in the industry, and the role of the General Manager. Younes shares his management strategies, the importance of exceptional programming, and why collaboration is a crucial skill for any member of your team.Takeaways:  Hospitality is an inherent concept of treating others with warmth and care, extending from our homes to the hotel industry. It comes from the heart and is about treating people as you would treat them in your house.  Continuous improvement is essential in any talent, whether it's sports, music, or acting. In the hospitality industry, teamwork and constant challenge are essential for improving the skills and talents of staff. Relationships and being a skilled generalist are crucial in the dynamic world of hotel management. The ability to manage teams, juggle priorities, and reintroduce brands requires constant dedication and expertise. Providing exceptional programming is crucial for hotels to exceed guest expectations and create memorable experiences. Comfortable accommodations are expected by guests, but it's the added features and activities that truly make a hotel stand out. Regularly engaging with people and observing their behavior by walking around is a valuable management practice. It offers opportunities to understand their desires and motivations, leading to impactful insights and positive outcomes. The pandemic has made it increasingly difficult to find good people and talent, especially in industries like hospitality. Management teams should look to foster internal talent, and help employees grow in ways that excites them. Growing up in a family that owned a travel agency, Younes experienced hospitality from an early age. The experience led to a deep connection with the hotel industry and a career pathway shaped by a memorable vacation. Marilyn is a seasoned character actress and writer for stage and screen known for her rich, grounded portrayals of Latin women. A graduate of NYU's prestigious acting program, Marilyn is transitioning from a number of successful supporting roles working alongside iconic performers Morgan Freeman, Jane Lynch, and Parker Posey to a larger role on the Tyler Perry show All the Queen's Men. It's a huge shift in how she presents herself in meetings, on set, and even in her own self-talk—one that's leaving her feeling anxious and intimidated as she now tries to navigate stepping into more complex leading roles.Marilyn is working with one of our phenomenally energetic coaches Alicia Dara. Alicia is a nationally recognized speech and presentation coach who has helped thousands of people including CEOs, Global VPs, Executive Directors, and Presidential candidates find their Power Voice, and put it to work. Her clients include Microsoft, Amazon, Kimpton Hotels, Planned Parenthood, The National Women's Political Caucus, Facebook, Merrill Lynch, and Twitter. Her most popular course helps women strengthen their voices and clarify their personal messaging—exactly what Marilyn needs right now on her journey to becoming a leading actress. In this episode:- Alicia leads off by working with Marilyn on her “Personal Power Pitch”—a living document for that defines her superpower and provides a north star for how Marilyn wants to be perceived when walking into a room.- Next, Alicia dives deeper into the four pillars of public speaking: pacing, volume, enunciation, and clarity, and together she and Marilyn rehearse and refine Marilyn's personal power pitch and set a practice schedule.- Alicia then relates a piece of critical wisdom about how Marilyn can redirect unwanted attention or flirtation when it comes to people's reception of her appearance and how to kindly refocus the conversation back on the project without creating undue conflict.- Lastly, Alicia advises Marilyn on how to discern and read the room and modulate how much of her story she shares. There are some projects where her heritage and journey will be valuable and other times where she's going to feel the need to protect that story and redirect the conversation. She has full permission to set her boundaries as she sees fit.--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theidealists/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theidealists/support

Travel advisors are finally busy again — the good kind of busy, not the cancel-rebook-cancel-rebook cycle they've been stuck in for the past two-plus years. But many of them are too busy, and it's taking its toll. Burnout is now a real problem in the travel agency community. That's why we've invited Laura Magnuson, a licensed therapist and vice president of clinical engagement at Talkspace, to join us on this episode of Trade Secrets. We discuss how to avoid workplace burnout, how to balance work and life when work is just so busy, and more. This is our season two finale! We'll be re-releasing some of our older episodes in August and September so you can take a look back on topics we've already covered. Please keep in touch with your questions and ideas in the meantime! Then, in October, we'll be back with all new episodes of Trade Secrets. This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. Utah's travel and tourism industry is a key part of Utah, contributing over 100,000 jobs and more than $7 billion to our state's economy. Jeff Olpin, the General Manager at Kimpton Hotel Monaco Salt Lake City discusses how they've fared and their future expectations. JEFF OLPIN As statewide hotel occupancy dropped to 26 percent in 2020, it's safe to say that the pandemic has turned the hospitality industry on its head. And while the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Salt Lake City has struggled like many others throughout the pandemic, we are turning a corner as we're seeing an increase in travel this year from both transient and business-related guests. At the introduction of the vaccine and as COVID restrictions ease, people are feeling more confidence in travel. Additionally, as businesses return to their offices, we expect the numbers for business-related guests to continue to grow. After nearly two years of being cooped up, our guests are ready to forego virtual gatherings and celebrate in-person. As part of that trend, we recently hosted a wedding where the couple had delayed their celebration for two years, an indication of the return to normal life. As theaters in our city are bringing entertainment back, we're seeing that our guests want to make a night of it — by dining at our restaurant, Bambara, heading out to the shows like Riverdance, and then returning to the hotel for a stay downtown. If you're looking for a night out on the town, please consider staying with us at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco in Salt Lake City and dining at Bambara. DEREK MILLER Before the pandemic, Utah's thriving travel and tourism industry was breaking visitation records. As the virus becomes more manageable, we expect Utah's travel and tourism industry to rebound substantially this year, adding jobs and revenue to our state's economy. This ultra modern five star hotel in the heart of Bangkok represents the future of luxury hotels in many ways. It is the flagship property for Kimpton Hotels in South East Asia. The Kimpton Maa-Lai has branded itself as a luxury, locally minded hotel which sums up many features of this property which you don't see in more traditional hotels. There is unpretentious service, affordable food and drinks, an open door policy for pets to stay free, WFH options within the rooms and suites as well as outside the rooms. A free social hour (free wine, cocktails and snacks) for in-house guests is a way for guests to connect with each other and the staff, and there are options to rent rooms by the day or even half day for WFH and instagrammable locations all over the property. The hotel is located in the middle of a gorgeous man made park, which creates a relaxing, calming environment right in the middle of Phloen Chit, one of Bangkok's most upmarket areas. David is the COO of Humanist Hospitality, a hotel management company born during the pandemic that has been working hard to infuse new thinking into the human connections at the heart of the hotel industry. Their goal from the start was to flip the status quo on the employee lifecycle, bringing in meaningful benefits, training and development opportunities to aid those workers who helped the company survive the pandemic and to entice those who either left or are thinking about a career in the industry. This is a discussion happening all over but I wanted to dive deeper than just talking about higher pay and signing bonuses. We're all trying to figure out what the next version of a hospitality career looks like but in spite of all the unknown, you can bet that putting more emphasis on employee relations is what the winning companies will be doing. About DavidAs COO of Humanist Hospitality, David Martin provides leadership and strategic vision through operational, managerial and administrative procedures. Martin has enjoyed a versatile career of thirty years in hospitality, in which the past eleven years were spent in a President or COO role. His portfolio comprises several types of hospitality organizations from four star boutique hotels with Kimpton Hotels to receiverships/lender owned assets with Prism Hotels & Resorts. With a record of strategic leadership, he has been the driving force behind innovative processes to optimize productivity and create sustained growth. In the past year, many educators have been facing a tough time. Issues that have traditionally been left out of conversations continue to be an elephant in almost every educator's room. I am talking about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) among students as well as teachers on all levels; an issue often exacerbated by external pressures from parents and experts! Many believe the pressures of COVID-19 to be over but educators are feeling the different results on a daily basis.Fortunately, I have a friend who introduced me to someone who has worked tirelessly for DEI her whole life: Simma Lieberman. Simma is internationally known as "The Inclusionist," because she creates inclusive workplaces where employees love doing their best work and promoting equity among organizations. She is a DEI educator and author who has been working in the field for over 30 years. Her work has focused on promoting DEI in Fortune 500 companies, including Applied Materials, Intel, Diageo, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, and Boeing. An expert in reducing racial tension in organizations and communities, Simma founded her own consulting firm that works with organizations on racial equity initiatives. She is a member of the editorial board for two diversity think tanks and the former chairperson and co-founder of San Francisco's regional chapter of Out & Equal as well as being inducted into their hall of fame. Simma's articles have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and Fast Company. In this episode of the Flipboard EDU Podcast, we speak to Simma about how her work is going after the George Floyd murder and how diversity can affect classroom dynamics. We discuss why it's important for educators to be aware of their own biases; what strategies educators can use to help students understand other cultures better; and how to foster understanding between different groups at schools such as LGBTQ+ students or other marginalized groups.Podcast Planner for Students and Teachers Flipboard EDU Magazine Flipboard Educators Blog Flipboard EDU Podcast Website Copyright Chillhop Music - https://chll.to/b9bb917bCopyright Chillhop Music - https://chll.to/6cd0b356Copyright Chillhop Music - https://chll.to/fae889b3https://uppbeat.io/t/sensho/double-takeLicense code: ZQLKLMU6EZ4EZUVMhttps://uppbeat.io/t/ra/take-actionLicense code: 9OMFXRUMARMT10IPMusic from Uppbeat (free for Creators!):https://uppbeat.io/t/pryces/music-isLicense code: WO9N7QDIM5PFELOFSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/FlipEDU?fan_landing=true)

Obadiah is responsible for all aspects of the Vine Hospitality operations overseeing the core values of the company: Drive Quality, Have Fun and Make it Happen! With over 20 years as a top hospitality executive, Obadiah Ostergard began his journey in the culinary industry as the Executive Chef at Gaylord’s in the historic Kilohana Plantation in Kauai, Hawaii. While working closely with the Owner and General Manager, Ostergard not only created and executed full-service lunch and dinner menus but also serviced banquet functions and weekly catering events. Shortly after, Ostergard decided to venture to Wilmington, Delaware where he was invited to open a café for MBNA America. He continued to grow within the company, moving on to roles of Executive Chef and Executive Catering Director, where he was responsible for overseeing event management for extravagant banquet functions. Ostergard continued to flourish in the hospitality industry—during his time in Delaware, he co-owned The Vault and Restaurant 821, both of which he lead as General Manager. He was able to conceptualize a creative business plan for Restaurant 821, creating a fine dining restaurant that featured locally grown ingredients. Restaurant 821 received multiple accolades from Philadelphia Magazine and Zagat as well as “3 Bells” by award-winning food critic, Craig Leban, for its sophisticated dining experience and notable, fresh dishes. Several years later, Ostergard moved to San Francisco to join the Kimpton Hotel and Restaurant Group, where he began as the General Manager of Kuleto’s Trattoria in Burlingame and later transitioned to the San Francisco location on Powell Street. Innovation in employee benefits has a long history. Take sabbaticals, a benefit that began in academic institutions. These long breaks allowed professors and researchers to take time off to pursue personal projects or simply recharge their creativity over the course of several months off. Those novel approaches are slowly inching themselves into the corporate world and companies from Patagonia to McDonald’s to Intel. And it’s not just sabbaticals that are growing in popularity, perks like unlimited PTO, 4-day work weeks, and company-funded personal experiences are becoming more widely accepted across industries. Company leaders see these perks as a way to give back to loyal personnel, and employees are increasingly searching out organizations that are embracing new approaches to time off.    But it’s not as simple as awarding staff a bundle of PTO and walking away. How do you pick up the slack for key team members when work hours aren’t the same as extended leave? How do you decide when an employee is eligible for different tiers of perks? And how do you measure the “performance” of such unique benefits? In this episode, we talk to Mike DeFrino, CEO of Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants, about the benefits he’s implemented, the challenges they present, and how these benefits help keep employees engaged.

On today’s show we’re talking about hotels and some of what’s happening in the hotel industry. The first major trend is that the hotel landscape is changing dramatically. Major hotels chains are launching more and more brands as they try to gain market advantage. Here’s what I believe. The value of a brand is called its brand equity. There is a ladder of brand equity that starts at the very basics Brand Awareness Brand Preference Brand Insistence Brand Advocacy I’m a pretty astute world traveler. I’ve visited over 55 countries in the world. That’s not going to break any records. But it’s fair to say that I’ve traveled. I’ve stayed in roadside hotels on the freeway at under 40 Euros a night, and I’ve stayed in luxury 5 star properties from Shangri La in Asia. I’ve stayed in Taj hotels in India, and Accor Group Hotels all over Europe. When it comes to hotels, I find that I struggle to keep pace with the proliferation of hotel brands. It’s like there is a hotel brand arms race underway. All the major hotel groups including Hilton, Marriott, IHG, Best Western and Hyatt have multiplied their brands. ntercontinental Hotels purchased Kimpton Hotels back in 2015. The company breaks down their business into Mainstream hotels and luxury and lifestyle. Their best known brands is Holiday Inn. Atwell, Avid are new brands that complement Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express as part of their mainstream portfolio. Some of the growth has taken place through acquisition, but much has happened as a result of launching new brands with positioning. Luxury and lifestyles (Intercontinental has 65 hotels under development). There are new brands like Regent, 6 senses resorts, and Indigo. Almost all of the 6,000 hotels in the IHG portfolio are owned by independent 3rd parties. At Hilton, they’ve added new brands like Tempo, Motto, Signia, Canopy, Tru, Home2, Homewood Suites, the Curio Collection and the Tapestry Collection. Marriott is now the largest hotel group in the world after having acquired the Starwood Group that owns Sheraton, and Westin. Hyatt has expanded with new brands including Andaz, Alila, and Thompson Hotels. The hotel groups are eyeing the growth of the middle class on a global basis as the main driver for demand. There has been considerable focus in the industry on bringing additional value to guests through loyalty programs. Someone who earns their Hilton Honors points at the airport Hilton when traveling for business will use their points at a vacation destination using one of the other brands when traveling for leisure. Today’s traveler is looking for specific amenities. When I travel, whether it’s for business or pleasure, the number one amenity that I look for is a refrigerator in the room. If it doesn’t have a fridge, I’m not staying there. It’s common in the downtown core of a major city to see many competing hotel brands, when in fact many are The seven largest hotel companies boast a mind numbing 134 brands. There has been so much consolidation in the hotel industry that even iconic family run hotel names like Waldorf Astoria, Fairmont and Ritz Carleton, are all part of a global conglomerate. So why are the hotel companies proliferating the number of brands? Strong brands like those under the Marriott and Hilton families attract the most visitors. They also attract the highest valuations from the REITs that aim to purchase performing hotels.

First up this week is a word to the wise. Live and Let’s Fly lets us know that things are rocky right now at Air Canada and Aeroplan. They attempted a systems integration last week that did not go well. It’s not only a good time to check your existing reservations. It’s also a good time to have a plan B if you were planning to use Aeroplan to book an upcoming trip. That’s why it pays not to procrastinate. I’m famous for waiting too long to book trips and getting tripped up by things like this. Another cautionary tale this week is via View From The Wing. Hyatt is losing the Ocean Resort and Casino in Atlantic City as part of the World of Hyatt program. This sort of thing happens from time to time. However, this one is a bit more painful. For starters, the change is happening at the start of 2020, less than a month from now. Second, Hyatt isn’t doing much to help those affected. Other than offering to move award reservations to a paid rate or transfer them to another hotel, people with award bookings are stuck. There are no similar properties nearby. In fact, the next closest hotels are a Hyatt Place and Hyatt House in Mt Laurel, over 40 miles away. I get that Hyatt’s in a bad spot here. But, part of why I continue to patronize Hyatt is because they have continued to stand behind their members where other chains take the easy way out. I could be wrong here, but I think most customers understand when something like this happens. However, since the matter is completely out of the customer’s control, a few extra Hyatt points in someone’s account seems a worthwhile value to let customers know Hyatt empathizes with them in the situation. Here’s hoping Hyatt finds a solid resolution for customers here. It’s holiday shopping time, and there’s a gift giving guide for business travelers written by yours truly. Road warriors have different needs than occasional travelers and leisure travelers. Gear has to justify its weight and space in a backpack or briefcase, and you better get solid value for money spent. If you’re hunting for the perfect gift for a business traveler, we’ve got plenty of suggestions they’re bound to love. God Save the Points shines some light on 5 Marriott Moments you might consider spending your points on. Experiences are becoming a bigger part of loyalty programs, but they’ve been around a while. Heck, it’s 7 years ago since I redeemed my SPG Starpoints to get my wife a tennis lesson with Andre Agassi. Still the single greatest redemption I’ve ever had. Anyway, take a look at these Marriott Moments. The Hotel Danieli in Venice is one of my favorite, which means once again I’m saying Gilbert from God Save the Points has good taste. Last up this week is a reminder about Kimpton Hotels’ secret social password. Make sure to have the password when you check-in for a Kimpton stay to earn a mystery prize, like free breakfast or a bottle of wine. The current password is “Stay Human”. Thanks to Ben at One Mile at a Time for reminding us of this fun benefit. That’s a full wrap on today’s travel news.  If you’ve got a piece of travel news that you think I should feature on NowBoarding, you can e-mail me at ed@pizzainmotion.com, or find me on social media, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. How do you help social entrepreneurs spread their ideas? Bridgespan Group co-founder and managing partner Jeff Bradach and Bambara Kitchen & Bar executive chef David Bazirgan join host Billy Shore to talk about impact investing and helping non-profits scale to create transformative change. “So much of scaling is about how you create that feeling that has people acting on their own in ways that are aligned and consistent with the vision [that] makes a difference in the world,” explains Bradach. Bazirgan practices a similar philosophy in his kitchen. “I’ve always tried to create a good culture of teamwork, respect and keeping an open dialogue. Lead by example, [practice] good communication, and get buy-in,” he advises. Bradach cautions that creating large-scale change isn’t as simple as just replicating good ideas. “There’s other virtues of scale, but I do think there’s an underappreciation of that unique, radically local experience that is deeply embedded in community,” he observes. Bazirgan is a big advocate for community nonprofits, and is preparing to ride in his first ChefsCycle for No Kid Hungry event. “I’ve always been one to just say ‘yes’ to everything. We have such an opportunity to give back and provide and support,” he says. Join us for this conversation that explores the dynamics of social change and the true potential of nonprofits to make transformative change.
