When it comes to fintechs getting bank charters we are entering a golden age. With zero fintech-oriented bank applications approved in the Biden administration we already have several fintechs with shiny new bank charters just a few months into the new administration. So, if you are a fintech and are thinking about bank charters now is the time.To break all this down, I was delighted to chat recently with Michele Alt, Co-Founder and Managing Director at Klaros Group. She was last on the show in 2021 and certainly a lot has changed since then. Michele takes us through the different types of charters and explains the different options for fintech companies seeking charters. On this podcast you will learn:The fundamental change in attitude for bank charters with the new administration in DC.The two paths that fintechs can take to get a bank charter. The pros and cons for each of these paths.Michele's thoughts on the SmartBiz acquisition of Centrust Bank. Why she thinks the timelines for bank acquisitions will be shorter from now on.The difference between an ILC charter and a regular bank charter. Why most ILC banks are located in Utah. Why some of the big names in fintech are applying for the MALPB charter in Georgia. Why Wyoming created the SPDI charter. How the Federal Reserve is reacting to this change in the new bank formation environment. Why some of the crypto companies are looking for federal bank charters.Michele's perspective on the big tech companies getting bank charters. What she would say if Amazon came calling looking to explore an ILC charter. What the fintech banking landscape might look like at the end of the Trump administration.Connect with Fintech One-on-One: Tweet me @PeterRenton Connect with me on LinkedIn Find previous Fintech One-on-One episodes

Is there power behind organized chaos? Today, Dan Ryan engages with Meg Gutowski, Vice President of the Independent Lodging Congress (ILC). They discuss the essence of hospitality, the role of ILC in fostering connections among industry professionals, and the unique blend of events hosted by ILC that emphasize genuine human interactions over transactional relationships. Meg shares insights from her extensive experience in the hospitality industry, including planning initiatives, organizing events, and the importance of creating meaningful experiences for attendees. They also delve into personal anecdotes and the intricacies of balancing organized chaos in event planning. The episode emphasizes the transformative power of hospitality and the vital role of independent lodging in the industry.Takeaways: Emphasize the mission of hospitality to care for people on their journeys. This core purpose should guide all actions and decisions.Strive to create experiences that blend the unexpected with fulfilling guest expectations, making their stays magical but ensuring they feel taken care of.Use unique and less formalized settings, like walk-and-talks, immersive experiences, and local tours, to encourage organic interactions and deeper connections among attendees.Building authentic relationships is crucial. In the hospitality industry, human connection and genuine interactions can set your business apart.Engage with local businesses and community members to enhance the collective experience for visitors.Choose venues and spaces that are comfortable and stimulating for guests, considering their comfort during events and interactions.Quote of the Show:“ Trying to figure out the right combination so that it feels very magical, but also you feel like you're taken care of. Nine years with no evidence of disease—yet Megan-Claire Chase's cancer journey isn't over. As she once fought cancer alongside her mother, she now faces something even harder: losing her. In this episode, Megan-Claire shares a deeply vulnerable side—a daughter losing her mother. Facing your own mortality is one thing, but facing the mortality of your loved ones—friends, family, fellow cancer patients, and survivors—and the hole they leave behind is something entirely different. Key Highlights: Witnessing her mother's cancer progression brings anticipatory grief, yet despite that grief, Megan strives to learn as much about her mother as possible, including fond memories from her childhood. Despite the anticipatory grief, Megan and her mother engage in a bonding exercise using question cards, and she records their conversations. One of the most meaningful things she learned was that her mother reflects on her life with joy—ultimately, the greatest goal is to leave this world happy. Facing your own mortality can unearth many emotions: the need to be confident and not tolerate disrespect, the desire to live life on your own terms and to the fullest, yet also a deep sense of loneliness and isolation. Key Moment: 21 minutes: “Something that people outside of Cancerland may not fully understand is the side effects from the toxic treatments, the side effects from multiple surgeries, the pain that some get fades, they heal, but for others, like moi, I really got the motherload of permanent damage, permanent side effects, effects that happen like a year, two years post cancer. And so I, as I'm talking to you right now, I am in pain. And I often have people say, ‘you don't look like you're in pain.' And I'm like, look, it's not Halloween yet. I don't want to scare you. If I looked how I truly, truly felt on the daily, you would think you're in a scary movie. And so, dealing with multiple types of pain, chronic pain, is something I never, ever thought would be part of my cancer experience." Our guest this week is someone who is committed to elevating communities and creating wealth through hospitality ownership and leadership. Please welcome to the show, Founder of Hospitality Hued, Ashli Johnson!Ashli sits down with Host Dan Ryan to discuss the ways the hospitality industry can be more accommodating of Black and Brown professionals. Ashli shares her motivations for founding Hospitality Hued, the importance of early professional development, and how to instill a sense of ownership in employees.Takeaways: While hospitality is ultimately a business of service, it is rapidly evolving to better address DEI issues across employment, supplier diversity, and leadership. To remain impactful, those in the industry must actively engage in these conversations.Conferences and networking are a crucial part of success in the hospitality industry, yet many Black and Brown leaders find themselves “under conferenced”. To combat this, HUED was created to lower barriers to these opportunities for Black and Brown leaders.Leverage alumni networks to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical career development. Don't overlook the importance of having a strategic approach when pursuing career goals to avoid potential disadvantages and seize growth opportunities. To motivate teams to think like owners, consider actually giving them ownership stakes, as it fundamentally changes their understanding and investment in the business. Implementing an equity share model can drive engagement from general managers. In hospitality, it's crucial to understand how positive guest experiences impact the business's overall success and competitive position. Recognizing the connection between guest satisfaction and business metrics such as rates, market competition, and capital expenditures is essential for professional growth and effective management.Aspiring hotel or restaurant owners should carefully consider their financial and personal responsibilities before pursuing ownership. Instead of direct ownership, roles such as investor or franchisee have lower capital requirements and barriers to entry.Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who want to master the business, and ensure that your leadership is aware of your interests to help you move towards your desired career path.Quote of the Show:“Your fortune is found in the follow up.” - Ashli JohnsonLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/itsashlijohnson/ Website: https://www.hospitalityhued.com/ Shout Outs:2:12 - HD Vegas: https://hdexpo.hospitalitydesign.com/ 2:47 - Howard University: https://howard.edu/ 2:50 - Marriott-Sorenson Center for Hospitality Leadership: https://business.howard.edu/hospitality-leadership 44:52 - John Fareed: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnfareed/ 45:06 - From Invisible to Icon: How to Become a Known Expert in Your Industry: https://a.co/d/03AZNsoL 45:41 - Julien Saunders: https://www.linkedin.com/in/juliensaunders/ 45:42 - Kiersten Saunders45:47 - Rich and Regular: https://richandregular.com/ 46:36 - Thomas Penny III: https://www.linkedin.com/in/thomas-penny-iii-1aa40915/ 46:42 - Damon Lawrence: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hauspitality/overlay/about-this-profile/ 46:45 - Jason Bass: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jasoncbass/ 47:01 - ILC: https://ilcongress.com/ 47:15 - Kendra Plummer: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kendraplummer/ 47:37 - Bashar Wali: https://www.linkedin.com/in/basharwali/ 47:56 - Lauren A. In today's episode, part of our MBC webinar series, we delve into the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS). We aim to break down the overwhelming amount of information into digestible insights. We discuss key findings, particularly on inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) and invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC), with insights from Amy Parliman, a member of our MBC leadership team.Amy highlights the advancements in technology that outpace current treatment options and the importance of recognizing the unique challenges of diagnosing IBC and ILC due to their imaging difficulties. She shares that the symposium acknowledged these challenges and that there's growing research focusing on the genomic mutations specific to these types of breast cancer. We also touch on the significance of patient-centric care, reminding listeners that they have the ultimate say in their treatment decisions. Amy shares her personal experience with her treatment regimen and the importance of sticking with what works unless there's a compelling reason to change. The episode also covers the potential of contrasted mammograms and the need for different types of PET-CT scans for accurate diagnosis. We stress the importance of being informed and advocating for oneself, as treatments can vary based on individual cancer properties. As always, we remind our listeners that the information shared is from personal experiences and not a substitute for professional medical advice. BUFFALO, NY- November 6, 2023 – A new #editorial paper was #published in Oncotarget's Volume 14 on October 31, 2023, entitled, “The uncharted role of HER2 mutant alleles in breast cancer.” Somatic HER2 mutations are a novel class of therapeutic targets across different cancer types. Treatment with the tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) neratinib as a single agent continues to be evaluated in HER2-mutant metastatic disease. However, responses are heterogeneous, with frequent early progression. In this new editorial, researchers Rashi Kalra, Bora Lim, Matthew J. Ellis, and Shyam M. Kavuri from Baylor College of Medicine discuss the under-explored effects of individual HER2 mutant alleles on therapeutic response, a role for HER2 mutation in metastatic propensity, and differences in patient outcomes in ER+ invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) versus invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). The preclinical efficacy of additional agents is also discussed, particularly the pan-HER inhibitor poziotinib. “In summary, preclinical findings described above support clinical investigation of poziotinib in a subset of ER + mBC harboring HER2 somatic mutations and suggest further studies to evaluate poziotinib as a therapeutic agent in additional tumor types.” DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/oncotarget.28489 Correspondence to - Shyam M. Sherburne County partnered with St. Cloud State University to offer a chance for Indigenous students to connect with both the land and their heritage. Reporter Chandra Colvin has the story. This is Minnesota Native News. I'm Marie Rock. This week, Sherburne County partnered with St. Cloud State University to offer a chance for Indigenous students to connect with both the land and their heritage. Reporter Chandra Colvin has the story. In late September, indigenous students had the chance to connect to mother earth by planting sweetgrass at the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. These students are a part of a new program through the St. Cloud State University American Indian Center. This program is known as the Indigenous Learning Community or the ILC. Coordinator Bearpaw Shields, who is both Dakota and Nakota, explains: BEARPAW SHIELDS: The Indigenous Learning Community was created - this unique program that is grant funded. And it was designed to help, recruit, retain, and graduate our indigenous students. And so part of my role, as well, is to help mentor the students, and to help them succeed through the college role here at St. Cloud State University. Because a lot of times we get first time students, and it's really scary. They don't know a lot about college life. And I want to really help them stay on track, because it's so easy to fall into the wrong crowd. And then, they don't end up graduating. So I'm serving here as a mentor, and as a guide, basically a guide, if you want to put it that way. The ILC provides experiences to indigenous students both inside and outside of the classroom. Students can take culturally relevant classes as a cohort and spend time together in the American Indian Center on campus studying. Bearpaw Shields coordinated the sweet grass planting with Sherburne County's Park Director. GINA HUGO: I'm Gina Hugo. I'm the parks director for Sherburne County. And we're here at the Big Elk Lake Parkland, where we have been working with several Minnesota tribal communities on a cultural landscape co management vision for a sacred landscape that's in county stewardship right now. And today, we're out with some amazing St. Cloud State students to expand a sweet grass meadow on the landscape. Bearpaw Shields explains how this partnership came to be. BEARPAW SHIELDS: I first met her probably about a few years ago. I was introduced to her because she was working on this property that we planted the sweet grass on. And she wasn't educated on American Indians. And so I took her underneath my wing, and educated her. And so she you know, talking to her about how there's not a lot of places for our people to whether it's harvest sweet grass, or sage or chokecherries or elderberries, things that are people traditionally used as medicines and for ceremonies. And so she then decided, you know what, I think this would be a great idea for this when they're going to do the park to have the sweet grass. So then our generations can come and harvest sweet grass, and so we can continue to use the medicines that our people have done for many years. Aria, a part of the Red Lake Tribe is a second-year medical laboratory science student. They share their experience on this opportunity: ARIA: I decided to come here to kind of connect closer with my culture. I think that being able to plant sweet grass in itself is an amazing experience. And I feel like a lot of Native Americans should be able to have that experience to connect closer with their culture and be able to grow closer as a community in general. This is the first of several activities that the Indigenous Learning Community students at St. Cloud State University will experience this year. Planned activities include traditional crafts, such as ribbon skirt and shirt making, as well as visits from an Ojibwe elder. For Minnesota Native News, this is Chandra Colvin
In the rapidly changing world of tech, the hospitality industry can struggle to keep up. Today's guest is here to provide some guidance. Drawing on her 20 plus years of technology experience, she creates innovative experiences for guests and travelers. Joining the show this week is The Travel and Hospitality Industry Advisor at Salesforce, Jacqueline Nunley!Jacqui joins host Dan Ryan to look towards the future of the hospitality industry. They discuss the common challenges facing hoteliers when implementing technology, the ways AI can revolutionize customer experience, and how brands need to think about implementing AI. Takeaways: Hospitality is an ever changing landscape. As guest expectations have changed, technology has advanced rapidly, creating a blank slate. This allows for the industry to redefine what hospitality means to them. Because the hospitality industry is often fragmented, implementing new technologies can be a challenge. When looking for new solutions, leadership should prioritize technologies that can work cross-functionally. The level of repeatability and consistency in an experience needs to be tailored to the type of experience. Knowing what to expect can provide comfort to guests, but many guests often seek the unique experiences of the locations they visit. When looking to implement tech into a hotel, the end goal should be on making the staff's jobs easier. By freeing up staff from mundane tasks that can easily be replaced, you allow them more time to focus on providing the human element to guests. AI offers many benefits to the end customer, but it requires careful consideration of a guest's concerns. With many guests, there is a concern about the privacy of their data. Hotels need to provide a sense of security to ensure that guests trust the technology. Implementing AI into the hospitality industry is not about replacing people's jobs, but rather about allowing them to better serve guests. Conversational AI can speed up support calls, drastically reducing customer frustrations. While AI has the potential to redefine the hospitality industry, it's adoption needs to be intentional. Instead of adding AI features because a competitor had, first assess if the use of that technology will add value to your customers. Today's guest is passionate about travel, art, history, and horseback riding. She authored her masters thesis toward a study of the intersection of advocacy, historic preservation, and architecture and has completed hotel renovations nationwide from conception through close-out. Please welcome to the show, Shannon Seay! Shannon is the Partner and Project Director at H-CPM, and the founder of an industry Networking Collective. Shannon joins the host Dan Ryan to share her thoughts on the hospitality industry. Takeaways: The core idea of hospitality is about crafting a community that is inclusive where people are excited to take part in it. It is the difference between place making and space making. Every single thing in each of our lives has helped us to develop the perspective that we hold, and it's the job of the professionals in the hospitality industry to put that together. When someone is staying at any place that is in the realm of the hospitality industry (hostel, hotel, motel), they are home away from and finding a place to rest. Rest necessitates comfort, and you can't truly be comfortable if you are in a place that doesn't speak to you. A successful team isn't a team that has no problems, but rather a team that solves its problems efficiently, coherently and in a professional manner. This applies to all industries as this will make a team act as a better unit. Core values for your company aren't something that are just written up and put on a piece of paper or a website to get a new deal. They are values that each and every team member really needs to embody and represent. Everything comes down to a collaborative discussion. When it comes to the custom design space, there are a lot of different people that are involved in that aspect so it's important to get everyone on the same page, even if that means compromising somewhere. [Updated Jan 10, 2021] The Big Bang's Failed Predictions and Failures to Predict: As documented below (from 2014), the repudiation of the predictive ability of the big bang includes its many failures: - the theory's failed prediction of an entire universe worth of antimatter - the failure to predict thgravie universe worth of dark matter needed if the BB is correct- the 2.7K CMB background radiation and the missing shadow of the CMB - 2014 claim, later retracted, of the discovery of inflation's gravity waves - failed to predict inflation, another BB rescue device of questionable predictive value - the claimed predictions of initial abundances of the elements, hydrogen, helium, etc. - the failure of big bang nucleosynthesis to account for most of the universe, dark matter, etc. - failures with magnetic monopoles, more on lithium, and the transparency problem - expansion by post-dating expansion discovery and pre-dating the BB the theory could predict expansion - the many observations undermining the big bang theory's foundational predictions of homogeneity and isotropy - and dozens of other major failed predictions of the big bang.* See our full written report: over at rsr.org/big-bang-predictions.* Get a Real Astronomy Resource: Get the Spike Psarris DVD What You Aren't Being Told About Astronomy and Vol. II, Our Created Stars and Galaxies! Marni welcomes Tessa Alburn to the Life Check Yourself Studio. Tessa is a certified master coach at the Institute for Living Courageously and has been working on the You're Courageous Life VIP program. She has helped countless women connect with the essential self, let go of limiting beliefs, and start to write the blueprint for the whole self life that they really want to live. Takeaways: How to communicate your true self Recognize the power of how you show up in the world Overcoming your self-limitations Uncover what has been holding you back Creating a Life of Core Meaning [4:30] Tessa reveals the reasons that so many women come to the ILC and the core change that allows them to finally start creating a life of meaning. Core change means understanding and being your essential self and recognizing how it expresses energetically in the world. Tessa reminds us that there is nothing wrong with us, but we have to be able to express our true self. We have to learn what needs to shift and then get the essential self expressed in a way that is received and heard by others. Too many women are missing the pieces around how to communicate from their true self, the part of them that wants to be loved. You might have a great life, but still feel a disconnect between true gratitude and the gratitude that is in your mind, leaving you feeling stuck and angry. At the ILC campus, we work to help women bridge that gap. Why Your Essential Self Energy Matters [13:07] Marni asks why your essential self matters in your efforts to live a meaningful life, attract the right partner, be a powerful leader and create impact in your relationships. Why should we care about that? When we own that it matters to us, we can come into a fullness of life that is freed up to have a more meaningful life experience. That also results in connection with the divine, the universe, and with others. When we know we are living our purpose in life, we have such deep gratification, deep fulfillment, and deep satisfaction. Overcoming What is Holding You Back [21:23] Our clients experience breakthroughs when they start asking themselves high-quality questions. Tessa shares some of these questions, like How did my reaction connect to the past? How did I learn to react like this? How might I love myself even though I'm upset? If you're not able to come into your adult self, you will constantly feel hurt and rejected. Marni shares the example of choosing not to text men back. Being a quiet woman who doesn't use her voice is just a script that is holding you back, and holding onto outdated, limiting advice is not the way to get what you really want! Today's guest is a passionate hospitality leader with more than 25 years of experience in growing hospitality brands and nurturing successful partnerships in more than 70 countries around the world. Daniel del Olmo is the President & Chief Operating Officer of Sage Hotel Management. Daniel stopped by to preview the upcoming Independent Lodging Congress! Takeaways: The 2022 Independent Lodging Congress is being held at the Line Hotel in Los Angeles from October 11th-13th. The link to register is included below. The welcome cocktail will be held at the newly opened Hotel Per La on the first day of the Independent Lodging Conference. What sets the ILC apart from other hospitality industry conferences is that it feels more like a community than a typical conference. Instead of standard presentations, the ILC is about bringing like-hearted people together to share their diverse experiences. From its inception, ILC has brought together many different points of inspiration from both inside and outside the hospitality industry. This basis is still felt today and it's hard not to be inspired by the varied perspectives on display. The ILC highlights the extended family of the hospitality world by featuring all of the disciplines that interact with hospitality, like music, art, culture, etc. If you're on the fence about going to ILC, ask yourself when was the last time that you felt inspired by going to a conference. Also, set some goals for yourself and your company and see how many of them overlap with those of people attending ILC. Quote of the Show: 2:19 “In the case of ILC, I've always found that it's a platform that brings together people that are like-hearted, different minded, and with a whole slew of different experiences and perspectives” Links: If you plan to go to The Independent Lodging Congress in Los Angeles October 11-13, use “DefiningHospitality” when checking out and save 10%.
