If we're saying two of the predecessors of rap music told us something 50 years, it means the lesson hasn't been learned. Bouncing red balls seem to be highly effective as a distraction, while the world continues to turn. Today's episode includes: • The Metaverse and moving forward with[out] “The Culture” • Colin Powell and all the takes • Netflix walkout and Geronimo's thoughts as the resident trans person • Jon Gruden and standing firm in your misogyny Friend-of-the-show Marcus K. If you've paid attention to pop culture and its most prominent Black voices over the past decade, then you've probably heard this statement or similar - "We are the culture!" Translation: Black people's creativity in entertainment and style, along with our embrace of certain products and services, add a validating cool factor otherwise unattainable. But if a massive co-sign from Black people is our greatest leverage at the bargaining table, what does this mean in the grand scheme of big business? Additionally, how does leveraging "Black Cool" contribute to the longevity of our historical narrative? Translation, in the words of Sonia Sanchez: How do it free us? We'll also talk about the day Facebook disconnected itself from the Internet, a few easy ways non-techie people can protect themselves online, and having product diversity and redundancy for anyone using social media to conduct and promote their business. We want y'all to win out here. Picking up where we left off on Episode 12 about the Black gatekeepers within pop culture, we dig deep into the challenges Black showrunners have in getting their ideas greenlit by producers and the expectation to write every show with a singular Black storyline. This episode was inspired by an article recently written by Hannah Giorgis for The Atlantic titled "Not Enough Has Changed Since Sanford and Son: The Unwritten Rules of Black TV" - https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2021/10/the-unwritten-rules-of-black-tv/619816/ Geronimo also announces his new co-host, Bryant "BeMo" Brown, who's no stranger to the podcast. Black food anthropology and media is a big deal these days. Think books like Michael W. Twitty's 'The Cooking Gene' and Bryant Terry's 'Black Food' or Netflix shows like High On the Hog and Fresh, Fried and Crispy, to name a few. There are also numerous social media accounts dedicated to Black food from around the Diaspora, be it chefs of all types and foodies alike. One account that has recently caught my eye is Black Food Fridays, an initiative that encourages everyone to support Black-owned food vendors and creatives each and every Friday or as founder KJ Kearney also puts it: "Black Food Fridays is like #TacoTuesdays but for Black people food!" The North Charleston native launched the site in April 2020, has been seen or featured on The Today Show, The Takeout, Charleston's The Post and Courier, Mic.com, and has amassed over 160,000+ followers. On this episode. we'll be talking about Black people's present interpretation and understanding of our food and what the future holds for preserving and sharing time-honored traditions/cooking styles. During the almost 18 months of varying social restrictions, a number of changes occurred among hospitality staff and patrons alike. Many within the hospitality industry were laid off, with countless employees leaving the industry altogether. People who'd normally not cook or drink at home began doing so in great numbers as well. Acosta, a CPG sales and marketing firm, found in a study conducted in May 2021 called "COVID Dining Journey: Eating at Home and Away From Home" that 92% of families will continue eating together at home at least as often – if not more often – post-pandemic. This is all despite people flocking to restaurants to have a taste of pre-pandemic life once dining restrictions at restaurants were relaxed. But what does this mean for places operating mostly as bars? Will having a drink with friends or a date require a bar with outdoor space? Have people become home mixologists over these last 18 months? Will bar and nightclub patrons opt for house parties instead? Joining me this episode to answer all these questions and more is Nicky Marcelin -- a seasoned hospitality and food professional who wears many hats including chef, curator, and hospitality consultant. An article called "Who Actually Gets to Create Black Pop Culture?" was recently penned by writer Bertrand Cooper critiquing the commercial access to and gatekeeping of our pop culture expressions by the so-called "Black Elite." This is a topic I've spent much time thinking about and decided to open the stage up to three guests instead of one this time so you can hear diversity in the opinions. BeMo Brown returns along with another friend of the show, diversified photographer Dee Dwyer. If you've been following All The Fly Kids media since before March 2020 you should be familiar with both of these dynamic individuals, each of them having been guests within our five years of operation. "Urban" as a descriptor is often used to refer to Black people, particularly in the marketing of fashion and music. On the contrary, I often explain the use of the word when speaking on my work in culture and lifestyle to mean "city living". Considering the digital interconnectivity of society, I recently began questioning if the "urban" descriptor in its current use in marketing is too limiting. My guest this episode is Karim Lateef - award winning consumer brand strategist, authority on the convergence of marketing and culture, and founder of Craft Brand Theory. We'll talk about the push to no longer use the word "urban" as a euphemism for Black people and what more accurate, inclusive categories would look like. Life in Western society is convenient, yet challenging. We're constantly being told to produce in a standard way first, enjoy the results later. This way of life works well for some and is tolerated by most. For the few who choose to detach from this expectation to make their own way, it requires a high level of determination, mental agility, and tenacity most humans don't possess. Add in a [non]traditional spiritual practice for extra support and you're liable to raise countless eyebrows in doubt. It just so happens, all of this describes some people I know. I talk with Denver Delaney about how she went from working for years in DC's hospitality industry to becoming a holistic health practitioner now based in Baltimore, MD. For the record, I'm not a fan of cancel culture. I also only believe in one agenda - the mainstream media's agenda to divide and polarize. But what makes both so genius is how the perpetrators are able to keep us so preoccupied with cancelling, who got cancelled, and every fill-in-the-blank agenda that's supposedly ruining society. This episode might get a little colorful and Earthy Hood Joint has some choice words about the matter. T-Pain had a conniption about it on IG Live. Willie D and Scarface expressed their disappointment about it during a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club. "It" is what I call the suppression of Black music's collective dynamism. The variety of sounds heard in the records created by popular hip-hop and R&B artists has become rare. However, this same variety can be found among many independent artists in these genres. Unfortunately, music discovery is an act reserved for few. Is it possible to reprogram the machine to invest in variety again? Is having an investment by the machine something independent artists even want? BeMo returns to give his thoughts on these questions as we figure out how to get more disenchanted listeners hip to the artists making waves without the machine. No not THAT type of adult playtime, but the playtime that will reconnect us with our inner child. Even prior to reaching age 18, humans are expected to leave our child-like ways behind to make room for the responsibility and rigidity of adulthood. Yet people confuse being child-like for childish, immature, and naive. Being child-like, however, means still being curious about the world and not always taking life so seriously to the point of day-in, day-out redundance. Ananda Free joins me in this episode to talk about why reconnecting to our inner child can be freeing and therapeutic in a time when faux-productivity is the expectation. Ananda is an author, Auric field surgery certified, Reiki Master, and a Priestess of Osún in the African spiritual tradition of Ifa. Yahoo! Finance published its 2021 list of the 100 Greatest Things About America on Independence Day weekend and of course I had mixed feelings. Some mentions I was familiar with and others I had no clue why they made the list prior to doing last-minute pop culture research. My good friend and journalist Marcus K. Dowling joins me to make sense of the names on the list and whether or not they are some of the greatest things about this country. Top ten names (Full list - https://yhoo.it/3k3w1Yw): 1. U.S. COVID-19 vaccines: Moderna, J&J, (and 50%) Pfizer 2. Dr. Anthony Fauci 3. Dr. Pepper 4. Statue of Liberty 5. The new space race: Bezos v. Musk 6. Simone Biles 7. Rice Krispies treats 8. Have you ever been in an emotionally intimate, non-sexual relationship? If so, would you admit to it? Because an intimate relationship without sex is merely a friendship, right? Not so fast. In a recent Drink Champs interview, Miss Jones (think AZ's "Sugar Hill" and Queen of morning radio in NYC & Philly in the 2000s) revealed she was in a years-long emotional, non-sexual relationship with Big Pun who upon his passing left her a portion of his publishing - a portion large enough to support Jonesy and her elder son for a while. Pun was married at that time, which in my opinion makes the emotional connection he had with Miss Jones minus the sex even more intriguing from the outside looking in. Why? Because this goes against all notions of what it means to have a side-piece. Robyn aka "Earthy Hood Joint" is back with me again to talk about this for a couple of reasons: 1) No one outside of that Drink Champs episode is talking about this and 2) How many people have these types of relationships where the love is strong without the need for sex, side-piece or not? Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion aka DEI - An abbreviation purposed with good intent or a performative apology, depending on your ethos. Speaking of ethos, this episode was inspired by a recent Instagram post on the Ethos Decorum page which stated, "Would have loved to see more independent and minority designers highlighted on the BET Red Carpet and Awards Show." This isn't new. Being a hip, early adopter of a brand looks great on paper but in practice is often a lonely road. That is unless you're someone with enough influence where tagging a relatively unknown brand can have them sell out overnight. But what's the reason why stylists don't "break" independently- and minority-owned brands? Talking with me this episode is Tactus Jack, the mind behind the design-focused agency and media brand Ethos Decorum. I'm calling this one "Badussy Discipline" because this applies to everyone no matter how you have sex, what your gender identity is, or where you fall on the feminine/masculine energy spectrum. When it comes to sex, many of us strive to show we're similar to the "thrilla in Manila." The more sex we're having, in particular with more people, the more our perceived attractiveness increases. An increased risk of contracting STDs and unplanned pregnancies aside, few people consider the exchange of energy taking place when we lay down with someone - Be it the first time or the 50th. Because unless you truly know someone, you don't know what [energy] them people got or where they been. In this episode, I'm joined by Robyn Ransome aka "Earthy Hood Joint", one of my best women friends. She's a holistic health practitioner with a focus on mental health, a straight-shooter, and Bronx native with Carolina and Cruzan blood (that's St. Croix, US Virgin Islands fyi). People around the world use cultural expression to share their creativity and traditions, sometimes making money in the process. Others see cultural expressions as nothing more than a commodity. We live in a world where everyone and everything is for sale, including creole words referencing what was once a horrific practice during slavery and is now known as an outdoor celebration breaking dawn. What I'm speaking of is "J'Ouvert", the trademark of the word by Michael B. Jordan and business partner Scott Williams, and the rum brand they've launched now bearing the term. Many natives of Trinidad and Tobago and people from other Caribbean islands are angry and want answers. You know I have thoughts on the matter. To help me work through this, I've brought in cultural architect and professor Risikat "Kat" Okedeyi to discuss the damage commodifying culture without respect for its history and legacy can cause. We'll also talk about whether or not people who hold their cultural expressions in high regard should begin protecting these investments through copyrights and trademarks. We often hear Black Americans say, "We have our own culture," but never hear much detail about what the culture is. Some point to hip-hop, others point to the style trends we influence; yet these are examples of pop culture and not examples of cultural traditions which make the foundation of any ethnic group. I believe our inability to easily name those cultural traditions is why we continue to have arguments about our identity to this day. I brought in my guy Bryant "BeMo" Brown - producer, curator, and creative shit talker - to help me walk through this conversation because he also knows a thing or two about Black people in the United States. We're back with a special one-time episode of The All the Fly Kids Show to have a conversation with Philadelphia-based activist Maj Toure. He's best known as the founder of Black Guns Matter, an organization focused on education people in urban communities in all 50 states on their 2nd amendment rights and responsibilities through firearms training and education. Maj has dedicated the better part of the last four years to educating Black people around the country about firearms and the racism at the foundation of gun control policies. Geronimo was joined by Backpack Matt and Chelle B to get more insight on the mission of Black Guns Matter, why the 2nd Amendment applies to Black people despite the media showing otherwise, gun ownership in the midst of potentially crippling economic downturn with long-lasting effects, and how we move forward. This episode is about the quality standards of fashion, film, and tv created by Black people and consumer expectations. What influenced this conversation? Netflix's #blackAF (created by Kenya Barris) and Wale's “Sue Me” video (directed by Kerby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss). While the two are different on the surface, both are dealing with socioeconomics and race with fashion playing a supporting role all throughout. If you were born some time in the 20th century and lived anywhere as far north as New York City or as far south as Alabama, you may recall seeing neon event posters pasted on electrical boxes or stapled to wooden light-posts. In the DC area, these posters are best known for promoting gogo, rap, and r&b shows. For those unfamiliar, these posters were created by the Baltimore-based Globe Poster - a company started by a couple of blue-collar guys with an entrepreneurial idea that became iconic 90 years later. The Maryland Institute College of Art (better known as MICA) and our friends Shaolin Jazz have teamed up to present an exhibition paying homage to Globe Poster during DC Design Week which kicks off this week and runs through next Friday. Our guy Marcus K. Dowling, who'll be speaking on the panel at exhibit's opening, is back in studio to give more insight into what you'll see and why Globe Poster represents more than an event poster with a memorable aesthetic. #NecessaryListening For tickets and more information on the Globe Poster Exhibit, visit https://dcdesignweek.org/events/shaolin-jazz-and-globe-posters/ Follow Marcus K. This week's episode is all about Caribbean Carnival vibes, not on the islands south of the U.S. though, but actually right here in the Big Easy. New Orleans is known for many things. Something we're good at doing on The All the Fly Kids Show is pivoting on the fly. Our guest needed to reschedule due to a family emergency and as the universe would have it, we got a last minute invite to a Memorial Day cookout. We thought this was the perfect opportunity to capture the energy of the day and a Black function. Shout out to friend of the show and photographer extraordinaire, Dr. Devonte Williford, for plugging us into the festivities. #NecessaryListening Show notes: 5:45 - Black cookout menu standards...But seriously, who made the potato salad? Is it a wrap for Instagram influencers? Culture and lifestyle vertical, Quartzy, recently published an article entitled “Instagram Influencers Are Out, Slackers Are In” (https://bit.ly/2DGdkV8) to answer this question. We break down this article and get into the details of being an Instagram influencer and answer the question of whether it's even possible to be a modern-day slacker. We also talk about Jay Z's Nipsey Hussle inspired freestyle he performed at his B-Sides show in NYC on Friday, along with Black influence inside and outside the hood. Last and definitely not least, Robert smoked weed over the weekend and his recap is probably the funniest thing you'll hear all day. #NecessaryListening Speaking of Instagram, shout out again to our viewers for watching and giving their takes on “influencing vs slacking.” We're reading listener/viewer comments and questions each week.
